We’ll talk about honing in on extreme legal niches, hiring help without risking your reputation and work quality, and building a book of business from scratch.

Hacking’s Hack: There’s a podcast I listen to called the art of procrastination. In the show the say to look at which items stay on your desk for a long time and find people to delegate them to.

Tyson’s Tip: This one is from the Haskin’s brothers-Google added a general business category to thousands of Google MyBusiness listings that have hurt businesses rankings in Google. Go make sure that you don’t have it, and if you do get it removed ASAP.

Today on the show we have Don and Edith McClure, some of our first listeners and owners of a successful car and refinery accident practice in Houston Texas. They’ll talk about maintaining strong communication with clients without losing time and focus to the work, practicing with your spouse, feedback on MaxLawCon19, and whether or not Jim or Tyson is the fan favorite.

https://attorneymcclure.com/my-office/

Hacking’s Hack: Alycia Kinchloe talked about the importance of reading every day at the conference. It’s important to read about your practice area in general.

Tyson’s Tip: During the summer we tend to get lazy. Look at it as a fight. Think about how it will make you feel to win that fight, and how it will feel to lose that fight.

Don’s Tip: We use Ecamm Live for all of our live-streaming needs. You get lots of extras like lower thirds, comments, and other features you only get with a service.

Edith’s Tip: Check-in to your business on social media when you are there physically. It lets people know you’re available.

Rank #3: The Skills To Run A Successful Law Firm And Be A Good Lawyer ML089

Podcast cover
Read more

In this episode, Jim and Tyson will go over the different kind of skills you need to run a successful law firm and be a good lawyer.

“Why the skills that make you a good lawyer probably are not the same skills you need to run a successful firm?”

Lawyer VS Entrepreneur:

Sometimes people have occupations that fit their personality and sometimes they don’t. Being a good lawyer is not the same as being a good entrepreneur and business owner. Although it sure shares a lot of values and mindsets.

Identify Your Skills:

Finding what it is that you are really good at, what your unique strengths are, it’s really important because: 1, it helps you figure out what you are good at and what you should be doing, and 2, it helps you find people who have different skill sets that can support you and fill in the places where you might be weak.

Think Outside The Box:

If you are doing the same thing as everybody else, you are probably doing the wrong thing and you need to really look outside of your usual space to find people that can teach you things that you haven’t thought about. Some of the best tools that we use came from outside of legal marketing…

How Can I Be Doing That Better?:

Whenever you are listening to CLE’s or business podcasts, etc, don’t think “Great, I am already doing that”, think “How can I be doing that better”?

Invest In Yourselves:

You really need to make time and find out people who you resonate with you. Keep pushing yourself.

Take Action!

Implement what you know. Read a lot, study a lot, listen a lot, but implement.

Max Law Con:

http://maxlawcon.maximumlawyer.com/

Hacking’s Hack: Inventory your email and delegate: Categorize the different types of email that you receive and once you have a comprehensive list of categories of emails that need responses, delegate those emails automatically to the right person in your office. .

Tyson’s Tip:

A book from a coach: “Organize Your Team Today: The Mental Toughness Needed to Lead Highly Successful Teams”, by Jason Selk, Tom Bartow and Matthew Rudy.

Ryan’s Website: https://sargentlawfirm.com/

Hacking’s Hack: I’ve been messing around with the reminders app on my iPhone and figured out you can set reminders based on location, so you can remind yourself to do something when you’re at a specific place.

Tyson’s Tip: I found a site called Dubb, its fantastic. It lets you send videos via emails to clients. It’s much better than BombBomb.

https://dubb.com/

Ryan’s Tip: I have two: (1) Turn off all notifications on your cell phone, except for you family and essential people. (2) If you’re on instagram, follow @tylermcbroom and he has a wealth of tax tips that will save you a ton of money.

In this episode, Jim and Tyson will go over the first edition of The Maximum Lawyer Conference. They will talk about their observations and what they experienced going through each event and breaking down all the speakers during the conference.

Systems, SEO, content, marketing, branding, and more. But the real highlight of the event: Personal interactions...

The speakers delivered. The presentations were excellent. But what was more important, the connection between everyone who was there. The speakers were all very approachable and every who came to the event could talk to whomever they wanted.

Hacking’s Hack:

  1. Stay tuned and make sure to register to upcoming the MaxLawCon 2019.
  2. Anneke Godlewski wrote down everything that happened during the conference in the facebook group. Check it out!

Tyson’s Tip:

This Time Tyson has a favor to ask to the attendees that came to the conferences and people that did not come to the conference… Tell us what you want. Put it in the facebook group. Who do you want to be with? What you want to do? Topics? Ideas?

In this episode, Jim and Tyson interview Shawn Hamp, a criminal defense lawyer who lives in the Cincinnati area and has an office in Arizona. They will go over his business and how does he run the law firm remotely. Management, employees, clients, intake, systems, logistics, team communication and more!

A lifestyle decisión:

Shawn and his wife decided to raise their kids in Cincinnati where they’d be close to their family. So he would have to run his law firm remotely...

“It was kind of the second leap that I had to make. The first leap was going out on my own after leaving the county attorney's office.”

There were a lot of steps to make this happen. Some of them:

  • Figure out what type of courts that he could appear remotely in.
  • Coordinate logistics logistics of computer systems and phone systems.
  • Key hires of attorneys that could do the day to day court.

“Basically what I do full time now is work on marketing, intake and administration of the office. It’s business development. Fortunately, that is the kind of stuff that I love doing.”

Also, they will discuss the difference between finding clients remotely in small cities and big cities.

“I have a competitive advantage because I am a big fish in a small pond…Even if it’s remotely”

About Shawn:

Shawn Hamp has practiced law for more than 17 years with emphasis in criminal law: https://www.hamplaw.com/shawn-b-hamp

Nomberg Law Live and Video Strategies

A weekly show that airs through Facebook Live every Tuesday at 10am CT, 8am PT in which Bernard brings on different guests to talk about whatever it is that is their specialty. To watch Nomberg Law Live go to Facebook and like The Nomberg Law Firm: https://www.facebook.com/NombergLawFirm/

The idea is to branch out a little bit and have more variety. But, if you want to see Bernard talking about workers compensation law you can go to his Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZZ7l9auCk5DeJDe76VkeUA

“Just start. Just practice”

As a rehearsal you can do offline videos just to see how you sound like and look like.

“I do videos to try to humanize who I am as a lawyer, cause I think a lot of folks who don’t deal with lawyers they tend to be a little afraid to talk with them. I just gotta show that I am a guy just like them!”

Stand Out!

“As a 2 man firm we can’t compete with the billboards and the TV attorneys; thos big firms. So we have shifted our marketing to the social media, the internet…”

A great piece of advice:

“Just be yourself. People can see through that, if you are being someone else, if you are trying to impress, if you are trying to be something that you are not. Those clients, those friends of the firm, the opposing counsel, the judges, they see through that in a heartbeat… That should be enough with all the learning that you have, with who you know, what you know, the bookmarks… All of that ought to be enough for you to be successful”

“So many lawyers spend so much money on getting the phone to ring, but we all do a pretty poor job, or not a good job as we think we do, on actually conversion.”

Bernard’s Tip:

Everyone's time is precious. Including those who are calling your office for advice. And I think that listening is the most important thing an attorney can do when he picks up the phone and talks to a client, they just wanna be heard, whether it’s one minute or thirty minutes.

Tyson’s Tip:

If you are not comfortable with video, record a 1 minute video about anything you wanna do and post it to the Maximum Lawyer Group. That way you could get feedback from us and members of the group on it so you can get better.

Rank #14: Using Adwords to Grow Your Law Firm ML106

Podcast cover
Read more

In this episode, Jim and Tyson interview Jay Ruane. They will go over his background, his role in his firm and how he managed to grow and improve it, paying special attention to his Adwords experience and strategies.

“Start small, figure how it works, and then grow from there.”

The firm:

https://www.ruaneattorneys.com

Actually, Jay is more of an administrator of the firm than ever before, but he is still in the business, he does some court appearances from time to time.

Some of the topics:

The importance of content:

“We’re no longer advertising generic terms out there to drive people to information on our website, because people are finding our website organically based on all the content that we have”

A big mistake:

“One of the biggest mistakes people make, especially when it comes to adwords is thinking that more money is going to get them better results. That’s a misunderstanding of how the adwords auction system works.”

“There’s a tendency to wanna have the widest net, but the widest net doesn’t necessarily catch the fish that you want.”

How to build ads:

“We need to get in the mindset of the consumer. And those are the ones that are going to get clicks; the ads that resonate with the people who are facing the problem that needs a lawyer..”

How do you tell if an ad is working?:

“One of the things we like to use ourselves is, we direct the ad to a specific landing page on our website that is more sales oriented than our organic pages.”

Facebook vs Adwords:

“Facebook is great, but you have to have the right approach to facebook. You can’t expect it to give you the same type of results as pay per click because it’s just not built that way and the people aren’t there for that.”

Marquis Jackson’s episode:

Hacking’s hack: The Coaching Habit: Say Less, Ask More & Change the Way You Lead Forever by Michael Bungay Stanier. how to be a good coach in an office setting!

Jay’s tip: Curate your negative list on Google. Go back and take a list of the 100 top baby names for the last 50 or so years. Male and Female. Because a lot people in this field may hear that their friend got arrested for a DUI. If they are not the person who is looking to hire you don’t want to be advertising to them.

Rank #20: Performance Mentality and Mental Toughness to Run Your Law Firm ft. Jason Selk ML110

Podcast cover
Read more

In this episode, Jim and Tyson interview Jason Selk. Jason is considered to be one of the top performance coaches in the United States; he trains individuals and teams to develop the mental toughness necessary for high-level success. They will go over the importance of having a performance mindset in your life and your business, and how mental toughness can help you grow your firm.

Jason’s Website

Are you fighting it out to the very end?

The importance of confidence: The perfectionist mindset VS. the performance mindset.

Self confidence is the number one variable for all performers. What that perfectionist mentality does, is it really takes its toll on a person self confidence. If I keep thinking about that error or that missed opportunity, and not focusing also on the things I’ve done well, my confidence is gonna take a beating. We try to train people to develop the performance mentality, that it’s about recognizing what you have done well and relentlessly improving.

“Highly successful people NEVER get anything done in one given day, but what they do is, ALWAYS get their most important activities done each and every day.”

Plateaus in business

“Plateaus will happen. There will be times where you’re kind of in that phase of doing the work and not seeing the immediate results, but if you stay with it: 30, 60, 90 days, nailing your one most important and usually getting the 3 most important done each day, you are probably gonna find plateaus don’t last very long; that you find ways to keep moving it to the next level.”

The mindset of saying no

The first step to saying no is evaluating where your time and energy are going, and in terms or relevance, what’s most important? If right now you are feeling overwhelmed, the next step is to eliminate 10% to 20% of what you are currently doing. The third step, is moving forward. The next time anyone ask you something, before saying yes, identify what will you say no to.

Don’t overload yourself. Prioritize.

The book

Hacking’s hack: Have a podcast!

Jason’s tip: Go back to the 3 most important and 1 must. Identify your 3 most important activities and of that 3 what’s the one most important activity that must get done every day.

Tyson’s tip:

  1. If you ever had problems downloading and viewing .ZIP files, there’s an app called Browser. The icon is an arrow pointing down.
  2. Get the book Organize your team today.

This week on the show we have Jim Aspell. Jim is the principal and managing attorney of the firm which he started in 2006 following 20 years of litigation practice in a mid-size firm in Hartford, Connecticut.

Jim focuses his practice in the areas of worker's compensation and personal injury litigation, insurance subrogation law, social security disability law, personal bankruptcy, and residential real estate.

Hacking’s Hack:

Jim recommends the book Built to Sell, it's about how to set up your

company to be saleable when the time comes for you to get out of the firm.

Jim’s Tip:

Get an accountant right off the bat. I would urge anybody, considering doing that, to get a good accountant that's actually familiar with small business. They can guide you on the type of entity choice to pick S Corp, LLC, and can put you on the right path in terms of payroll so you don't run afoul of payroll taxes and those kind of things.

In today’s episode we’ll talk about ultimate goals, struggles with managing employees and marketing.

Hacking’s Hack:

Here’s a hack to make more connections. I take a photo of myself with the books that I order and tweet it out with references to the authors Twitter account. When I received Duct Tape Marketing and tweeted it, the author John Jantsch liked it and retweeted it.

Tyson’s Tip:

If you’ve been wanting to learn another language, check out the Duolingo app, it’s free! The app feels more like a game because it gives you points and challenges you. If you like to play games on your phone it might motivate you to learn a new language.

Nick’s Tip:

Don’t give up just because something doesn’t seem to be working. Too many lawyers try something once and say, “Oh, that doesn’t work”. Sometimes it requires refinement and tweaking.

Happy Halloween!

  1. Not delegating things you don’t need to be doing
  2. The amount that solo and small firms are making
  3. Not doing video marketing
  4. Not systemizing your firm's processes
  5. Not prioritizing intake
  6. Not using automation
  7. Negative self-talk
  8. Not taking law practice management courses
  9. Being afraid to take action
  10. Overspending

Hacking’s Hack:

Lawyers should keep a spreadsheet of when all of their software renewals are so that you don’t keep getting billed for software you are not using.

“Supercharging Your Referral Network” w/ Adam Krause 167

This week on the show we have Adam Krause, partner at Krause and Kinsman law firm, a personal injury and mass torts firm based in Kansas City MO and Raleigh NC. In today’s episode we’ll talk about starting a firm straight out of law school, building a referral network from scratch, incorporating virtual employees with a physical office, and whether or not you need to change your case management software.

https://krauseandkinsman.com/

Hacking’s Hack:

Zapier. It’s super easy to get started and you can get incredibly complex if you want to. It’s the backbone of our entire intake and case management system. It’s not nearly as intimidating as you might think. It’s a productive rabbit hole.

Tyson’s Tip:

Huji Cam. It’s an app that simulates taking pictures on an old Fujifilm camera. Great for taking less boring pictures to post on social media and to share with friends.

Adam’s Advice:

-Use MyFitnessPal. Its been great for me, especially while I’m traveling.

-Upwork. I’m able to build a dream team from freelancers and I don’t have to worry about getting someone under qualified.

This week on the show we have Annabel Eyrick, Jim’s Personal trainer and owner of Total Fitness Solutions in St. Louis MO. We’ll talk about how lawyers especially can do better about being healthy on the go, cardio vs resistance exercises, healthy dieting (while still enjoying yourself), and keeping motivated to live a healthy life with so many other things competing for your time.

Hacking’s Hack:

Braintoss, made by the Get Things Done crew with David Allen. You can either record a voice memo, a video, or a note and email it to yourself.

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/braintoss/id576226036

Tyson’s Tip:

Get the app Roadtrippers, it’ll show you how much gas it costs to drive to various locations on road trips, how much those things cost when you get there, and all kinds of other convenient features to keep your road trip smooth and in-budget.

Annabel’s Tip:

“The ‘After’ Unit” w/Jim and Tyson 165

This week on the show Jim and Tyson catch up on where their firms are at and where they’re headed. We’ll discuss virtual vs physical office space, handing off cases to lawyers you hire, prioritizing new clients or repeat clients, and focusing on the “after” unit of the sales process.

Hacking’s Hack:

Meet as a team and break down the most important ideas on your to-do list. If everything is important nothing is, you have to sit down and delegate as a team or nothing will happen.

Tyson’s Tip:

Otter. It is a really incredible voice-to-text transcription app. It didn’t mess up a single word when we tested it.

This week on the show we have David Frees, partner at estate planning firm Unruh, Turner, Burke and Frees located in Southeastern PA. In this episode we’ll discuss being intentional with your marketing, getting testimonials that answer your prospective clients objections, and being intentional with how you market so that you can choose exactly what types of cases come to you, not the other way around.

Dave’s Direction:

Have an editorial calendar and write your own content. Set aside time right now.

Have your intake team keep track of which content produces which types of clients. Cater your content to the types of clients you like working with most.

Hacking’s Challenge:

Start tracking your firm’s data because you never know how or when you can use it. They will give you indicators for what you need to work on and what you can do even better.

Tyson’s Tip:

SmoresUp App, it allows you to coordinate your calendar with your significant other, assign chores to your kids, and other cool features along those lines. Its even free!

In this episode we’ll discuss everything Virtual Assistant related: Hiring, Training, Managing, and more. Hacking’s Challenge: If any member of our group and takes a video and posts it for their firm 7 days in a row, I will send them a surprise at the end of the 7 days.

Tyson’s Tip: Brendan Burchard book called High Performance Habits. He’s studied a ton of very successful people and really breaks down the habits that make them that way.
