Rank #4: “10 Scary Mistakes Lawyers Make” w/ Jim Hacking & Tyson Mutrux 170

Podcast cover
Read more

Happy Halloween!

This week on the show we’ll discuss the 10 scariest mistakes we see lawyers make:

  1. Not delegating things you don’t need to be doing
  2. The amount that solo and small firms are making
  3. Not doing video marketing
  4. Not systemizing your firm's processes
  5. Not prioritizing intake
  6. Not using automation
  7. Negative self-talk
  8. Not taking law practice management courses
  9. Being afraid to take action
  10. Overspending

Hacking’s Hack:

Lawyers should keep a spreadsheet of when all of their software renewals are so that you don’t keep getting billed for software you are not using.

Tyson’s Tip:

Go build one Zapier Zap. It’s the gateway software into automizing your firm.

Visit MaximumLawyer.com for complete show notes of each podcast episode, tips, hacks and more resources!

Today on the show we have Oli Billson, lifelong entrepreneur and marketing legend.

In this episode, we’ll talk about the his four main profit activators he sees in all of his seven-figure businesses, including:

-Having a real vision of how you’re going to scale your firm past the plateau point

-Building a growth team with the capability to scale you from six to seven figures (or seven to multi-seven)

-Having an inbound sales team

-Building an “automation playbook”

He’ll also reveal some of the biggest business myths that are being perpetuated through books and social media you’ve probably consumed, as well as how he structures his time as he runs his multiple businesses.

Hacking’s Hack: Grab your iPhone or your Samsung and look at your messages-scroll down to the very bottom as far down as old as you can get on your messages find people that you haven't connected with in a while and just send them a quick text letting them know that you're thinking about them.

Tyson’s Tip: About two years ago, I started ordering from National Pen Company and people are always asking about you know, where do you get your merchandise things like that? They have high quality merchandise pens, notebooks, things like that and they're really inexpensive. I highly recommend them-National Pen Company. Worst case scenario is if you get on their mailing list, every two weeks they will send you a sample product in the mail. I just got like a notebook in the mail from them. Its actually branded with my firm's information on it, and I get something every two weeks.

This week on the show we have Michael Urbina, founder of The Urbina Law Firm, LLC in Marietta, GA.

During his early law school career, Michael worked for several in-house legal departments with international corporations such as The Coca-Cola Company, Invesco Limited, Crawford & Company, and Kemira Chemicals as he had the intention to become an in-house corporate lawyer.

However, after an opportunity to work with the Office of the Principal Legal Advisor (OPLA) for the Department of Homeland Security, he developed a strong interest in immigration and saw the need for representation in the immigrant community.

Michael is adamant that he does things differently in the services his firm offers to the community.

In today’s episode we’ll discuss the current hold on immigration, making decisions based on fear, and self-improvement. Jim’s Hack: Jim is currently reading “The Road Less Stupid” by Keith Cunningham, there are a lot of great questions to ask yourself in this book.

Tyson’s Tip: YouTube has a free audio library, you could use it in your podcasts or videos. Michael’s Pointer: Chris Voss, the FBI negotiator, has a course called MasterClass that Michael found very useful for every aspect of life. Get stronger communication skills, game-changing insights into human nature, and more of what you want out of life.

Hacking’s Hack:

The client has the best opinion of us the day they hire us, and that’s because we tend to slack on the “after” unit of the marketing process. Take some time to make sure your current clients are having the best experience possible.

Tyson’s Tip:

We’ve built in two surveys to our clients, we give a survey during their case and after their case. You can ask for a review early on if you ask for a survey.

In today’s episode we’ll talk about starting a firm straight out of law school, building a referral network from scratch, incorporating virtual employees with a physical office, and whether or not you need to change your case management software.

https://krauseandkinsman.com/

Hacking’s Hack:

Zapier. It’s super easy to get started and you can get incredibly complex if you want to. It’s the backbone of our entire intake and case management system. It’s not nearly as intimidating as you might think. It’s a productive rabbit hole.

Tyson’s Tip:

Huji Cam. It’s an app that simulates taking pictures on an old Fujifilm camera. Great for taking less boring pictures to post on social media and to share with friends.

Adam’s Advice:

-Use MyFitnessPal. Its been great for me, especially while I’m traveling.

-Upwork. I’m able to build a dream team from freelancers and I don’t have to worry about getting someone under qualified.

Rank #11: Episode 78 ft. Jason Korner: Building a Criminal Defense Practice From Clients Perspective

Podcast cover
Read more

In this episode, Jim and Tyson interview attorney Jason Korner, a criminal defense expert. They will go over his career, his transition from government work to private practice and then going solo and building his firm, his mindset, his client base, marketing, struggles and lessons learnt along the way.

The firm:

http://kornerlaw.com/

CLIENT INTAKE.

We can talk all day long about legal reputation and skills at trial, but if somebody hears that you are a good lawyer and that your firm is a good firm and they call and that first phone call doesn’t goes well, they are not gonna hire you. (..) Earning their trust and getting them to hire you, starts with the first call.

FROM YOUR CLIENTS PERSPECTIVE

Anybody who works with clients must know the importance of put yourself where the client is! So there are times when I go around to the other side of my desk and sit down in the clients chairs… What do they se? What do they look at? It can change your perception. What’s their experience like?

Hacking’s Hack: A person to follow on Twitter: Madelyn Sklar: @madelynsklar https://twitter.com/madalynsklar

She is a Twitter guru!

Jason’s Hack: A book. McElhaney's Trial Notebook 4th Edition Edition

by James W. McElhaney (Author)

https://www.amazon.com/McElhaneys-Trial-Notebook-James-McElhaney/dp/1590315030

It really does a great job of looking at things from a juror’s perspective, a judge’s perspective, clients perspective and bringing attorneys back to what really matters, but doing it through the trial window which is really such an important thing to most attorneys.

Tyson’s Tip: An app. It is called RecordIT! http://recordit.co/

Record your screen! You can use it to show someone how to use something!

Rank #12: “Old School is the New School for Solo Marketing” w/Jim Hart

Podcast cover
Read more

Today on the show we have Jim Hart, owner of the Hart Law Firm, a divorce practice based in North Carolina. In this episode we’ll discuss hiring “empty-bucket” vs. “full-bucket” employees, Jim’s experience with Atticus coaching, and struggling with delegating and growing.

https://jameshartlaw.com/

Hacking’s Hack:

I’m reading a book called “Scaling Up”, talking about growth he said that once you reach 5-6 employees you have to start delegating things you are not good at, but once you reach 10-15 you have to start delegating things you are good at. The thing that the entrepreneur is the best at becomes the weakness because the entrepreneur doesn’t want to let go.

Tyson’s Tip:

Take a 4-week vacation, disconnect from the business, and enjoy the vacation. It forces you to get your systems in place so that you can take this kind of vacation.

Jim’s Tip:

We all have CRM’s we use, something that I’ve done is I use Less Annoying CRM just for managing referral relationships, separate from the CRM I use for my potential clients.

Rank #18: The Skills To Run A Successful Law Firm And Be A Good Lawyer ML089

Podcast cover
Read more

In this episode, Jim and Tyson will go over the different kind of skills you need to run a successful law firm and be a good lawyer.

“Why the skills that make you a good lawyer probably are not the same skills you need to run a successful firm?”

Lawyer VS Entrepreneur:

Sometimes people have occupations that fit their personality and sometimes they don’t. Being a good lawyer is not the same as being a good entrepreneur and business owner. Although it sure shares a lot of values and mindsets.

Identify Your Skills:

Finding what it is that you are really good at, what your unique strengths are, it’s really important because: 1, it helps you figure out what you are good at and what you should be doing, and 2, it helps you find people who have different skill sets that can support you and fill in the places where you might be weak.

Think Outside The Box:

If you are doing the same thing as everybody else, you are probably doing the wrong thing and you need to really look outside of your usual space to find people that can teach you things that you haven’t thought about. Some of the best tools that we use came from outside of legal marketing…

How Can I Be Doing That Better?:

Whenever you are listening to CLE’s or business podcasts, etc, don’t think “Great, I am already doing that”, think “How can I be doing that better”?

Invest In Yourselves:

You really need to make time and find out people who you resonate with you. Keep pushing yourself.

Take Action!

Implement what you know. Read a lot, study a lot, listen a lot, but implement.

Max Law Con:

http://maxlawcon.maximumlawyer.com/

Hacking’s Hack: Inventory your email and delegate: Categorize the different types of email that you receive and once you have a comprehensive list of categories of emails that need responses, delegate those emails automatically to the right person in your office. .

Tyson’s Tip:

A book from a coach: “Organize Your Team Today: The Mental Toughness Needed to Lead Highly Successful Teams”, by Jason Selk, Tom Bartow and Matthew Rudy.
