"The Chase" Part 1: with Jon Diebler

"The Chase" is a four-part series chronicling Jon Diebler's pursuit of history. Diebler gives us an inside look at his four-year high school career, which is one of the most revered in Ohio roundball history. The beloved star gives us his thoughts on the journey but remains steadfast throughout the series that it was always team and winning first. He has never wavered as we revisit the mid-2000s, he was saying the same things.  Inside this episode: We discuss Jon's career at Ohio State. Jon tells us about his oldest brother Jeremiah and the career he had.  We dive into his freshman year at Fostoria High school playing alongside his brother Jake and future Michigan State football star Marcus Hyde.  We ask Jon if he remembers who his first points were against. We look at some signature games of the 2003-2004 regulars season, which ended in an NOL and Sectional Title.  Jon takes us through the tournament run, which culminated with a battle of brothers.  We finish the episode playing the "what if" game.

Ohio High School Hoops: Around the State Podcast with Cincinnati Moeller's Carl Kremer

You won't want to miss our latest conversation with Cincinnati Moeller head coach Carl Kremer. The 1978 Miami East grad has won 575 games in his 29 seasons with the Crusaders at a 79% winning percentage.  Inside the episode: We talk about his summer adventure to Brooklyn for the 2019 NBA Draft to watch former Crusader Jaxson Hayes become a Lottery Pick. The early years where a kid named Bobby Brannen really set the tone for what Moeller basketball would eventually become making it cool to play hoops for the Crusaders. The state championships seasons of 1999, 2003, 2007, 2018, and 2019. Moeller became the first Division I school to go undefeated (2019) since Zanesville in 1995 and the first D1 school to go back-to-back since Canton McKinley in 2005 & 2006. The last big school to do so prior to McKinley and Moeller was Elder in 1973 & 1974. The runner-up finishes of 2005, 2010, and 2017.  The seasons which got away.  Moeller is currently riding a 49-game winnings streak with a sparkling (84-4) mark over the past three seasons.  Last loss to an Ohio team on March 25, 2017 (Massillon Jackson, 39-38, in state final). Last loss to an Ohio team in the regular season was Cincinnati Elder on February 5, 2016.  The Crusaders have won 20-plus games in 15 of the last 17 seasons.  We discuss the culture at Moeller and what it takes to build a successful program for the long haul.  Finally, Coach Kremer was passed up for a certain head coaching job in 1988 and was "devastated." However, I think it worked out!

Ohio High School Hoops: Around the State Podcast with 2-Time State Champion Coach Gregg Collins

Our latest conversation is with former Lexington and Mansfield Senior head coach Gregg Collins. We cover his career at both historic schools.Inside the episode: The 1986-1987 regional qualifier featuring three sophomores, who would become the centerpieces of what was to come.  The 1988-1989 state championship season featuring Tom Scholl, Jeff Hoeppner, and Donn Restille.  The 1990-1991 state championship season led by the great Jamie Feick, who would go on to play at Michigan State and for the Charlotte Hornets, San Antonio Spurs, Milwaukee Bucks, and New Jersey Nets. He would later become head coach at his alma mater (Lexington). We discuss why Coach Collins took some time off between coaching jobs.  We finish the show talking about his great success at Mansfield Senior where his teams won 20 or more games in six of his 12 seasons at the helm and never won less than 15 contests. HIs 1999 and 2005 Tygers reached the State's Final 4 in Division I.  After researching, we found the answer to a question posed on the podcast, which was who beat Willard in the 1989 tournament. The answer was Bowling Green (62-60). We joked about Willard beating Lexington in both of its championship seasons.

We discuss his career from working in a factory while being an assistant coach and attending college to winning state championships and three Gold Medals. It's been a storybook career to this point, and one that started with becoming head coach at just 23-years-old. Flannery has led the Eagles to two state titles including his first in just his second year on the job. Oh, by the way, the Eagles beat their bitter rival to do it.  Some other topics we discuss: St. Edward having five coaches in five years before Flannery took over. The 1997-1998 season (1st state championship).  Handling a culture where expectations are so high.  Cutting his own nephew three times. Losing in the 1999 sectional and questioning whether he wanted to continue coaching, which was the only time a Flannery coached team didn't advance to district play. 25th Anniversary: A Trip Down Memory Lane with Westerville North

In the second episode, of our four-part 25th Anniversary series, we reminisce with current Westerville Central head coach and Westerville North graduate Kevin Martin. We remember the incredible run by the Warriors, which eventually ended in a 50-48 overtime triumph of Cincinnati Withrow in the Division I State Championship contest.
