In our podcast today I wanted to deliver some simple and actionable tactics that you can use to drive conversions and sales with. I am joined by the one and only Bradley Sutton of Helium 10 where Bradley drops some absolute golden nuggets that sellers can use and implement immediately. I would advise you to listen to this episode and conversation more than once in case you feel you missed anything. Inside Bradley and I discuss the current state of Amazon as well as increasing conversions, improving keywords, product research techniques and launching products successfully on Amazon. 

CURRENT STATE OF AMAZON FBA

Amazon is becoming more and more competitive over the years but there is still tons of opportunity for new sellers as well as experienced sellers to grow and build their Amazon FBA business. Once you have established yourself on the Amazon FBA USA market it may be time to expand out to Amazon Germany, UK and Japan or other markets. Also consider emerging platforms such as Walmart, Jet or other competing sites. I personally recommend that if you are building your brand you should also setup a Shopify site to expand your reach and net. 

CONVERSIONS AND SALES
  1. Use a site like Pickfu.com to test our different images for your listing. As a marketer you may think you know what images will work best for your listings but the best route is to get audience feedback. Images are everything on Amazon. When you have the best image that gets the most attention and clicks from customers you will most likely connect on more sales. 
  2. To convert on more sales you need to make sure your listing is speaking directly to your customers. You need to dive into your competitors and your own product reviews to fully understand how your customers talk and the lingo and keywords that they are using. This will allow you to better optimize the copy and keywords that you use in the listing. You will also better understand how to position and create your products images once you understand exactly how customers are using the product. Use a tool like Helium 10 to help you extract the review data to make things easier. 
LAUNCHING PRODUCTS ON AMAZON FBA

Every product is going to be different on how you approach the launching process. More competitive products will require you drive more giveaways or sales to particular keywords to start getting ranked. When you use tools like Helium 10 your will see exactly how many sales you need to connect on for a specific keyword before Amazon will start ranking you for it. 

  1. Use PPC as part of your launch strategy and keep your PPC running after the launch is over. Focus in on relevant long tail keywords when you have more competitive products.
  2. Build and email list or Many Chat list to launch products to. 
  3. Use a launch service if you need some extra juice to get ranked. It's important that you be very mindful and careful of Amazon's TOS and rules in regards to these services. 
  4. Use custom URL's to get extra ranking power when driving traffic. See Helium 10's gems page.  Bradley mentioned a few launch services to explore: Check out Rebate Key and  Rank Bell

It's important to note that if you do a launch and get to page one for your keywords that their is no guarantee that you will stay ranked on page one. Ultimately the market will speak and if your product or listing is not worthy of being ranked on page one yet for the keywords you are targeting then consider keywords with less competition.  

PRODUCT RESEARCH

There are tons and tons of product opportunities everywhere on Amazon FBA. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. If certain products are hard to compete with on Amazon FBA in the USA then consider other markets around the world or ever other platforms. 

Don't become overly reliant on tools to make decisions for you. As great as some of the tools like Helium 10 are we as sellers still need to use our heads and try to find the opportunities in front of us. the tools will give us the data and it's our job to recognize and see things other sellers missed. The key is to remember to give the market what it's wants. Don't reinvent the wheel.

3 Things I Wish I Knew When I Started Selling On Amazon - Amazon FBA Private Label Podcast

When I first got started selling on Amazon I was just trying to figure everything out.

Learning and consuming as much content as I could.

I like to go into a situation making sure I know all the angles.

As I look back on things I certainly wish I could have done things a little differently.

If I were to start selling on Amazon for the first time again I would not waste as much time on useless stuff.

I would focus on the stuff that actually mattered and learn the rest as I went along.

Here is a summary of the podcast

3 Things I Wish I Knew When Starting To Sell On Amazon:

1 - Over Analyzing is costing you $$$!

I spent months planning, studying and consuming every possible step of the process. Planning for the worst case scenarios. What a waste of time!

Stop debating for weeks whether or not you should get an LLC. Stop planning each step in detail before you even need to worry about it. If you haven’t even picked a product yet then stop trying to learn PPC or Facebook ads. You can figure all that type of stuff out later. Focus on the basics!

MY ADVICE – just get started and launch a product. Don’t worry about it being perfect. If it’s a success then great. Learn from it. If it flops…learn from it.

2 - Your suppliers aren’t all trying to screw you over

I went into talks with suppliers hearing horror stories and was so worried that they were just going to steal my $$. I got so hung up on that. Most are not going to risk their standing on Alibaba and are going to be fair to you.

ADVICE – consider them a business partner and build your relationship with them. If you don’t feel comfortable with the process then hire a sourcing agent to handle it all for you. I think it’s best if you work through your first few product yourself though.

3 - Invest in time-saving tools early

I spent WAY to much time in the product research phase. At the time I didn’t really know about the tools that existed to help me out with that. Wasting time and not making money is awful. You only get 24 hours in a day. Maximize each minute with time-saving tools. Since then I am always buying tools and software to help me run things.

The most common tool beginners need to consider is a product research tool. While there are several on the market my tool of choice is Jungle Scout.

ADVICE – always use tools when you can make the job easier or automate things. This is a business so treat it like one.

Alibaba – This is one of the main sites I use for sourcing products to sell on Amazon. It’s a portal to get connected with suppliers and the site is improving all the time.

Global Sources – Similar to Alibaba this portal is a very high quality site to find products to source. It isn’t as well know as Alibaba but certainly should be part of your tool belt when looking for new products.

Scott will also talk about the importance of filing for reimbursement claims with Amazon for missing and damaged inventory.      THE STATE OF AMAZON While Amazon continues to grow and expand over the globe it's a platform that is attracting thousands of new sellers every single year. More sellers than ever are creating thriving 6, 7, and 8 figure plus businesses utilizing the Amazon FBA platform. Just recently Amazon reported that nearly 150,000 Amazon sellers surpassed $100,000 in sales. While competition may be heating up there still is plenty of opportunity for new sellers coming to the platform.    AMAZON PRODUCT RESEARCH    Don't over-complicate your product research. Keep things simple by selling product that are currently in demand or have an emerging demand as trends start and grow. Using tools like Jungle Scout or Keepa can help you identify these product and trends. There is a lot of opportunity to sell premium versions of products on Amazon. While most sellers and Chinese suppliers tend to have lower quality products focused on value buyers you can carve out your piece of the market by positioning yourself as premium. When you do this you can charge more as long as you have a high quality product with premium packaging and a top notch experience.    Consider exploring the grocery niche for lots of future growth opportunities.   Data is great and can help with your product research but sometimes too much data can be counter productive. It's also important that you develop skills as an Amazon seller to be able to identify market opportunities without having to use tools all the time. You should be able to evaluate a current market and determine what the current market is asking for based on customer feedback, reviews and research.    As Scott mentioned it's certainly worth looking into new and emerging trends in the market. If you jump on trends early you can establish yourself as the leader early on Amazon. Using tools like Google Trends or just recognizing social trends may prove to be valuable.    AMAZON COUPONS   If you want to boost conversions and sales on your products then experiment with Amazon coupons. Most Amazon sellers aren't using these right now so the opportunity is golden to capitalize off of it. Coupons will help your click through rate as the visual green badge that Amazon displays is very eye catching. Also if you have slow moving inventory consider running coupons along with PPC to drive sales or liquidate inventory.    REIMBURSEMENTS    If you have been selling on Amazon for any period of time then chances are Amazon owes you money for missing, lost or damaged inventory. You could be owed thousands of dollars back from Amazon so it's important you dive into your reports on a regular basis. If you don't have the time or the patience to do this then hire a virtual assistant from the Jungle Market to assist with this process. You could also hire a service to assist with this as well. My 3 Step Formula for a $1,000,000 Business - Amazon FBA

Recently I was at SellerCon in Las Vegas and I was listening to a presentation given by Ryan Danial Moran. Ryan was talking about how Amazon FBA has changed a lot over the years and that we as business owners need to think differently about our business and brands. Tactics that worked just a few years ago no longer work anymore. Ryan specified that we as business owners need to become real entrepreneurs and build real brands that we can grow and scale on and off of Amazon. We have the power and the tools to create real brands that are making money and making a difference in the world. 

In this podcast I break down my 3 step formula for creating successful brand and how you can get to your first $1,000,000 in sales. You will see that once you build a real audience around your brand and products that achieving your sales goals will be easy. The focus should be on building real assets that you can control such as e-mail lists, ManyChat audiences, and social media assets. If you build valuable assets that are engaged with your brand and content then you won't be so reliant on the changes that frequently happen on Amazon FBA. 

THE FORMULA TO $1 MILLION
  1. Find a niche and a specific customer to serve
  2. Build your audience + Launch 3-5 related products
  3. Your brand X-Factor 

Now if you are just starting out selling online and on Amazon FBA then the thought of hitting $1 million is sales for the year may seem unattainable. If you follow the formula and shift your mindset a bit then you will find out you can easily hit the $1 million mark very quickly. 

  • $1,000,000 = $2,739 per day
  • Sell 5 products doing just $547 per day per product 
  • Sell 5 products at $25 doing an average of 22 units a day for each product
STEP 1 - FIND A NICHE AND CUSTOMER TO SERVE
  • Build a brand and a business in and around a niche that interests you. 
  • Generate ideas by writing down your interests and hobbies. Also browse Amazon categories for ideas. 
  • Make sure the niche is thriving and has lots of demand
  • Build a customer avatar for your target customer
    • Age, Sex, Education, Interests, Hobbies, etc...
    • What does your customer care about? 
    • Where do they hang out online? 
    • What problems are they facing? 
  • Design your business, brand and products around solving your customers problems

 

STEP 2 - BUILD YOUR AUDIENCE + LAUNCH 3-5 PRODUCTS 
  • Research and identify your first core product
  • Start building and growing your audience and lists
  • Start posting enraging content on social media 
  • Invest $5-$10 per day on Facebook ads to grow your platform and audience
  • Start building your email list and ManyChat audience 
  • Include your new and growing audience in on your products development 
  • Build excitement for your upcoming product launch
  • Launch your product to your new "tribe" and use Amazon PPC
  • Get tunnel vision on getting your product ranked to page 1 on Amazon
  • Ask your "tribe" for testimonials of your brand and product
    • Share these as pieces of content 
  • Use product inserts to build a VIP customer list 

Repeat the process for product # 2 

Repeat the process for products 3-5

  • Start using other larger influencers audiences to launch products with
  • Continue spending money every day on content and Facebook ads to grow your audience 
  • Become obsessed with your customers product/brand experience and journey 
STEP 3 - YOUR BRANDS X-FACTOR
  • Why does your brand exist?
  • What separates your products and brand from the competition?
  • Understand that people care about what your brand represents 
  • Connect your brand with a purpose, charity, movement, idea, etc...
    • Then communicate that to them often
  • Focus on creating raving fans

The fastest way to get to $1,000,000 from a small micro brand selling on Amazon FBA is to get your customer to buy from you over and over again. Once they buy from you once they should be exposed to your brand story and what you represent. If your brand has an X-factor that speaks to your target customer then they will support you and buy the rest of your products over time. That's how you win. When you can get a single customer to buy everything you have to offer because they know and trust you.

  • Check out the product research video I did with using Watchcount.com
  • Go to Ali-Express and find the most popular items to get ideas
    • Use those ideas to check the market on Amazon. If come up empty then look in the “also bought” areas. Also look at what those other sellers are selling for hidden gems.
  • If you are not using time-saving tools like Jungle Scout then you are simply wasting time. Use JS to quickly check demand on product ideas. Dig deeper if demand is met.

The gold jackpot is finding a weird product that only has a few sellers and massive demand. Even better if the products have terrible reviews but still selling. This might be weird accessories for other main products. Go to Walmart and walk the store to find and check for these weird items.

I LACK THE FUNDS TO GET STARTED
  • Set a goal to by said date to aquire $1000, $2000, etc… to get started and invest.
  • Resell on Amazon – Check out episode I did with Steve Raiken. College text books are huge!
  • Merch by Amazon - no cost to get started and T-shirts are big sellers on Amazon.
  • Drop shipping on Shopify – minimal costs to get started. Don’t need to buy any product.
  • Find a family member that has the funds and partner up.
I FEEL LIKE I AM GOING TO LOSE $$
  • Its all mindset. Flip your thought with I am going to make tons of $$.
  • Most of this is a break even when you fail anyways.
WORRYING ABOUT THINGS THAT DON’T MATTER YET
  1. Taxes, FB ads, Instagram, WHO CARES!!!??
  2. Only worry about picking a product and launching it to get sales and reviews.

Why do some have wild success and others give up and move on to yet another business venture?

As a successful online seller I have come up with my best 3 reasons on why Amazon FBA sellers fail and why some become successful.

  1. SELLERS DON'T FULLY COMMIT 
    • Treat as a real actual business
    • Need to set attainable goals
    • Need to have laser focus 
    • Avoid shiny object syndrome
    • Buy a course to accelerate results

  1. NOT HAVING ENOUGH CAPITAL 
  • Lacking money for marketing or giveaways is trouble
  • Come at your launch from a position of strength
  • Try to avoid a loan. It's a bad idea.  
  • Acquire more capital by flipping items on Amazon and Ebay
  1. THEY GIVE UP TO EARLY
  • Successful sellers keep pushing forward
  • We all have setbacks and failed products. It's normal.
    • Failure is feedback
    • You are 1 product away from changing your life

Perhaps they have had a few products fail in the past and they are hesitant now and don't want to fail. We've all been there. In this podcast episode I put together 8 Amazon product research tips and strategies that you can use to help you find great products to sell on Amazon FBA. 

I always recommend that you use a great Amazon product research tool like Jungle Scout to help aid you in this process. You need a good tool to help discover product opportunities as well as help you validate and verify critical data on Amazon. 

AMAZON PRODUCT RESEARCH TIPS
  • Pick boring products
    • There will be less competition selling products that aren't exciting 
      • Focus on Arts and Crafts, Office Supplies and Storage
  • Think Sub Niches
    • Most sellers don't dig deep enough to find odd or unique categories that you need to drill deep down into. This is where the gold is. 
  • Sell products that are easily gift-able
    • You can charge more and stand out when your product is gift-able
      • Explore selling gift-able products for retirement, weddings, bachelor parties, mothers day, fathers day, etc...
  • Use Google Trends
    • Use the filters and search bar to dig to find what ideas, topics and products are currently trending
    • Pay attention to pop culture and what's happening in the news
      • Gender reveal products, re-usable straws and bags
  • Facebook Groups are pure gold
    • Join lots of Facebook groups for niches that you are interested in
      • Be a fly on the wall and observe what people are talking about
      • What products are other sellers trying to promote in these groups?
  • Join deal sites and groups that other Amazon sellers are using to launch products
    • Pay attention to products that are being launched and avoid commonly launched products 
  • Use Pinterest and Etsy for Amazon product research ideas
    • Use the filters to find popular topics and products
    • You will find unique items with these platforms
  • Use niche websites
    • Get off of Amazon and use Google to find leading niche websites 
      • Explore their best sellers, featured products and unique items they are selling

  • Look for products that are in demand and can be improved to beat the competition
  • Consider selling products that are a little higher priced than normal ( $17-$50 )
  • Be cautious of selling products with a lot of moving parts or electronic items
  • Find great suppliers by looking up the importing records of your top competitors
  • Work to build a long term relationship with your supplier that is mutually beneficial
  • Find multiple suppliers of a product to be able to effectively negotiate pricing
  • When asking the supplier to customize the product explain your reasoning and give great details
LAUNCHING PRODUCTS AND LISTING OPTIMIZATION 
  • Build your own email list and audience that you can launch products to
  • Run aggressive PPC during the launch phase along with giveaways to get ranked
  • Use a tool like the Jungle Scout web app to determine your giveaway amount
  • Gain reviews through follow up emails by using a service like Jumpsend
  • Split test your main imagine to determine what is the best performing image
OUTSOURCING 
  • Sellers should learn to do their own product research and keyword research
  • Tasks such as product photography and listing creation should be outsourced
  • Use a service such as Jungle Market to find pre-vetted freelancers for Amazon sellers

6 Common Amazon FBA Product Research Mistakes Sellers Make - EP127

Over the years I have seen many sellers make the same critical makes when in the Amazon FBA product research phase. They may use tools like Jungle Scout to help them come up with potential product ideas but they fail to fully validate the idea. Then later after they launch the product on Amazon the product doesn't sell like they expected. This can be demoralizing as all your hard work and investment goes down the drain. It's critical to go the extra mile to ensure that the product your are going to be selling on Amazon is set up for success.

 

6 common mistakes that many seller are making in the Amazon FBA product research phase: 

  1. FAILING TO KNOW YOUR NUMBERS AHEAD OF TIME
    • You need to know what your total profit per unit is going to be after a sale
    • How much is it to make per unit?
    • What are the shipping costs going to be?
    • What are your potential taxes and tariff when shipping?
    • What are the Amazon FBA or Small and Light fees going to be per unit sold?
    • How much is your listing or product images going to cost?
    • What are the marketing costs going to be with your launch?
  2. TRYING TO REINVENT THE WHEEL 
    • Only sell product that are in demand
    • Avoid product that have no or low demand
    • Avoid selling products that require to much customer education before purchase 
    • Don't get to cute or creative with your Amazon FBA product research ideas. 
  3. AVOID SELLING ITEMS THAT EASILY BREAK 
    • Avoid selling items made of glass, takes batteries, is electronic
    • Sell products with few moving parts
    • Lower the risk for customer returns and disappointment
  4. FAILING TO PROPERLY EVALUATE THE ENTIRE MARKET
    • Don't just evaluate the top few competitors. 
    • Evaluate the entire first page of competition
    • Understand how sales are being spread among all the top sellers
    • Check listings for potential external traffic feeding sales
    • Evaluate and check sales history over a long period of time using a tool like the Jungle Scout Web App
  5. AVOID PRODUCTS THAT ARE HYPER COMPETITIVE
    • Focus on under the radar opportunities 
    • Find products that are doing $5-$8K in revenue with low competition and high margin 
    • Focus on launch and selling "singles" that could lead into doubles, triples or home runs. 
  6. AVOID SELLING PRODUCTS THAT MAY HAVE PATENTS OR OTHER LEGAL RESTRICTIONS 
    • If you come across a product that is doing very well and it has minimal competition the product may potentially have a patent protecting it
    • Check to make sure you can legally sell products without issue
