My Commute Counterpart. 💁🏼‍♀️🙌🏼

By alissalikesmusic - Aug 13 2019

Because of traffic, my 20 minute commute home from work typically takes 40 minutes to over an hour. So you can imagine how thankful I was to find Phoebe’s podcast. Since April, I have been listening to her episodes, both new and old, and just recently completed listening to the entire the series. Even though I feel like Phoebe and I are very different people living in very different worlds, we are both the same age, both trying our best to navigate our way through life, and both succeeding and failing at different adventures every day. I’ve enjoyed getting to know Phoebe and her friends throughout the series. Because of her openness, it feels like catching up with old friends each week, and the addition of FFF has been an absolute joy. So YAS QUEEN, keep the LOLs and the jokes coming, and BYE FELICIA to all the haters out there. 👑🙌🏼🎉💖

Rank #1: Why Men Love 'B's

Podcast cover

Thou shalt remember, treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen

When it comes to self-help books, there are very few proverbial stones I've left unturned. On my quest to try and rerail the life I've spent the last 29 years derailing, I've turned to help from the literary likes of The Secret, The Barefoot Investor, The Subtle Art of not Giving a...., The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving a...... (it's low key ridiculous the amount of ...... I have to give) and who could forget... Eat Pray Love. The OG basic 'B' bible.

My emotional instability, coupled with my unwavering positivity, means I fall for self-help books faster than I fall for boys. So imagine what happened when I found a book that combined the two? Ahh spoiler - a brilliant bloody episode... that's what!

Thou shalt remember, that you can quit your day job, but you can't quit your calling...

If I had a dollar for every time I said I was going to quit my job to follow my dream of becoming an author and full time creative, I'd have $8476 dollars. But unfortunately, your girls not very brave, and even though I don't have a fear of heights, every time I've psyched myself up to take the leap of faith, I just couldn't do it! So imagine how excited I was when I got a chance to chat to a kween who left her high flying job as a celebrity publicist, to start a podcast and write a book! Spirit animal much?

This week, I'm absolutely thrilled to introduce you to Cathrine Mahoney, a total girl boss who successfully took the leap of faith last year, to launch her Podcast 'So I Quit my Day Job' and write the book she's always wanted to. You know those people in life you just immediately vibe with? Cathrine was absolutely one of them and our mutual love of F45, red lipstick and lurpak butter had us form a binding friendship quicker than you can say Sav Blanc.

Since recording this interview a mere week ago, we've texted regularly, caught up for wines over zoom and planned a trip to the most crowded bar we can find once this quarantine nightmare is over. Even if you're not an aspiring writer, I know you'll enjoy this episode because we also cover the expectations vs reality of working from home, which I know is a universal struggle right now. So without further adieu... Cathrine Mahoney, I welcome you...

The true mark of adulthood, isn't getting married or buying a house... it's scheduling your own medical appointments. Whether it's medical, dental, optical or chiropractal (I made that last one up), there'll come a time in your life, when your parents will wash their hands of the responsibility, leaving you to fend for yourself for your sick little self.

Thou shalt remember that what happens in your adolescence, doesn't always stay in your adolescence.

You know the one thing that's harder than being in your twenties? Being in your teens. Without the risk of sounding dramatic, if someone offered me a million dollars to go back and do it again, I'd turn it down faster than Lil John. I've done my time and quite frankly, couldn't be happier to have left braces, awkward social interactions with the opposite sex and curfews behind. But despite being out of the pubescent minefield for almost a decade, there's still one thing I haven't been able to totally rid... my pubescent skin.

Thou shalt remember, to always try before you buy

When it comes to men, it's fair to say that my judgement is somewhat impaired. Okay, it's alot-what impaired. Like, we're talking even more impaired than the cognitive function of a white girl after a $12 bottle of rose. So after scotch-taping my heart back together for the nine hundred and forty-eighth time this year, I thought it was high time I took control back from of the bachelors of Brisbane. How? Well I'm glad you asked, because I've formulated a fail-proof first date screen test, to ensure we're intellectually, nutritionally and financially compatible. And I had the perfect guy to test it out on... he's even as into ASMR mukbangs as I am... Should I book the chapel now orrrrrrr?

Thou Shalt remember that home is where the crazies are…and sometimes you’re one of them.

Among the many trials and tribulations we face in our twenties, one of the toughest and trickiest things to navigate your way through is the holy mess of housemates. Seriously, why don't they teach you how to cohabit in school? It would have been a learning far more valuable than algebra – my life already has enough unknowns and frankly I don’t want to waste my time figuring out the meaningless coordinates of ‘x’ and ‘y’.

Rank #10: Life Hacks

Podcast cover

Thou shalt remember, that success is the sum of small life hacks

One of the scariest things about adulthood, is growing up and realising that life doesn't come with an instruction manual. It's a bitter pill to swallow, but at the same time it's also quite comforting to know that no one actually knows what they're doing. Like literally no one. We're all here just doing the best we can trying to excel in our careers, maintain a social life, drink enough water, text everybody back, exercise, stay sane, survive and be happy. Be born they said. It'll be fun they said.

But finally, after years of juggling very unsuccessfully, I've finally discovered that the secret to having it all, is hacking it all...

Just a forewarning, when you work full time and have two demanding side gigs, sometimes you have no other choice but to set up a makeshift studio on your lunch break in a commercial kitchen that has terrible acoustics. Stay with me though, it's worth it I promise!

Thou shalt remember, that mutual understanding is the backbone to every happy relationship

If jumping to conclusions were an Olympic sport, I'd be an unbeatable god damn gold medalist. Like, I'm so good at it, I had enough ridiculous content to dedicate an entire episode to it, which my OG listeners will remember from wayyyy back in season 3... if you missed it, listen here, because it's an absolute clanger. And you know the saddest part? 98% of the times I've jumped to an irrational and uninformed conclusion, it's been about a boy. But because I've realised I get enough exercise from F45 and Reformer Pilates, I've decided it's time to stop jumping and just start asking. Yes, the solution really is as easy as adopting a bit of old fashioned communication. So if you're like me and have spent the better part of your life trying to silently understand the mysterious workings of the male brain to try and make sense of what they're really thinking, this one is dedicated to you...

Thou Shalt Remember, that it's okay not to be okay

You guys know that I'm not one to shy away from conversation. I could literally talk until the cows came home... and I could keep talking until they'd eaten dinner, had a shower and tucked themseleves into their little cow beds. While I'm more than happy to lead the banter brigade with stories about boys, break-ups and bad decisions, I have been known to shy away from tough conversations. I can't help it, I'm a Libra, I was astrologically wired that way. But today, I'm going to be brave enough to start a conversation that truly matters...

Thou shalt remember that gratitude is the best attitude

Just like activated charcoal, turmeric and oil pulling, gratitude is a practice that's currently trending in the wellness world. I understand the difference between pre-biotics and pro-biotics, know my kombucha from my Kim Chi and am genuinely one of those freaks who hand over heart LOVES to exercise. Thou shalt remember that nothing will ruin your 20s more than thinking you should have your life together.

When Charles Dickens wrote, “it was the best of times it was the worst of times” he must have been talking about his twenties. That glorious, yet tumultuous time when you’re awkwardly straddling childhood and adulthood, trying desperately to officially make the transition from doe-eyed dependent to full-fledged freedom and independence. But no one tells you how fast it actually happens.
