My Commute Counterpart. 💁🏼‍♀️🙌🏼

By alissalikesmusic - Aug 13 2019
Read more
Because of traffic, my 20 minute commute home from work typically takes 40 minutes to over an hour. So you can imagine how thankful I was to find Phoebe’s podcast. Since April, I have been listening to her episodes, both new and old, and just recently completed listening to the entire the series. Even though I feel like Phoebe and I are very different people living in very different worlds, we are both the same age, both trying our best to navigate our way through life, and both succeeding and failing at different adventures every day. I’ve enjoyed getting to know Phoebe and her friends throughout the series. Because of her openness, it feels like catching up with old friends each week, and the addition of FFF has been an absolute joy. So YAS QUEEN, keep the LOLs and the jokes coming, and BYE FELICIA to all the haters out there. 👑🙌🏼🎉💖

Rank #2: Why Men Love 'B's

Podcast cover

Thou shalt remember, treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen

When it comes to self-help books, there are very few proverbial stones I've left unturned. On my quest to try and rerail the life I've spent the last 29 years derailing, I've turned to help from the literary likes of The Secret, The Barefoot Investor, The Subtle Art of not Giving a...., The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving a...... (it's low key ridiculous the amount of ...... I have to give) and who could forget... Eat Pray Love. The OG basic 'B' bible.

My emotional instability, coupled with my unwavering positivity, means I fall for self-help books faster than I fall for boys. So imagine what happened when I found a book that combined the two? Ahh spoiler - a brilliant bloody episode... that's what!

Thou shalt remember, that good hair speaks louder than words

As someone who literally gets paid to speak, I can't believe I just said that... but it's true. Your hair is the crown you never take off, and you kweens already know how I feel about crowns. So this week, I've called upon the experts again, to debunk some of the most common hair myths going 'round so we can do our hair toss a la lizzo and feel good as hell.

Meet Josh, my faithful hairdresser of 10 years.

With over 20 years of industry experience both nationally and internationally, Joshua Magee is my hair hero! Having worked his magic all over the world (including stints backstage at London Fashion Week), he seriously knows his stuff! Find out more about Josh or Globe Creative:

Rank #4: Life Hacks

Podcast cover

Thou shalt remember, that success is the sum of small life hacks

One of the scariest things about adulthood, is growing up and realising that life doesn't come with an instruction manual. It's a bitter pill to swallow, but at the same time it's also quite comforting to know that no one actually knows what they're doing. Like literally no one. We're all here just doing the best we can trying to excel in our careers, maintain a social life, drink enough water, text everybody back, exercise, stay sane, survive and be happy. Be born they said. It'll be fun they said.

But finally, after years of juggling very unsuccessfully, I've finally discovered that the secret to having it all, is hacking it all...

Just a forewarning, when you work full time and have two demanding side gigs, sometimes you have no other choice but to set up a makeshift studio on your lunch break in a commercial kitchen that has terrible acoustics. Stay with me though, it's worth it I promise!

Thou Shalt Remember, that it's okay not to be okay

You guys know that I'm not one to shy away from conversation. I could literally talk until the cows came home... and I could keep talking until they'd eaten dinner, had a shower and tucked themseleves into their little cow beds. While I'm more than happy to lead the banter brigade with stories about boys, break-ups and bad decisions, I have been known to shy away from tough conversations. I can't help it, I'm a Libra, I was astrologically wired that way. But today, I'm going to be brave enough to start a conversation that truly matters...

Rank #6: Cosmetic Injectables

Podcast cover
Read more

**Disclaimer. I'm neither endorsing, nor condoning the use of cosmetic injectables. I'm merely giving you information so you can make an informed personal decision. **

Thou shalt remember that ageing is a fact of life, but looking your age is not.

If you ever went night clubbing with a digital camera in your clutch, then it's officially time for eye cream. And if you've ever used the term 'night clubbing' in a non-ironic way, then you'll probably need to throw some collagen cream into the mix too. It's kind of ironic to think that we spend the first 18 years of our lives doing everything we can to look older, but then we spend the next 60, doing anything we can to look younger. So what's a girl to do? Don't look at me - I never what to do, but Maddie will know what to do! She always knows what to do.

Maddie - also known on instagram as The Functional Nurse - is as her name would suggest - a nurse who draws upon both western and functional medicine to give her clients their most glowing skin. Last time we caught up, we debunked some of the biggest beauty trends clogging out insta feeds, and if you want to catch that episode, I've included it in this weeks show notes, along with a link to Maddie's instagram and website. But today, we're turning the talk to cosmetic injectables. Yes Dolls, a controversial topic I know, but nonetheless, one that I've received a lot of questions about. So again, this week, I'm bringing in the professionals to give you the 411 on face tuning IRL.

Thou shalt remember, that google is not a real doctor.

The true mark of adulthood, isn't getting married or buying a house... it's scheduling your own medical appointments. Whether it's medical, dental, optical or chiropractal (I made that last one up), there'll come a time in your life, when your parents will wash their hands of the responsibility, leaving you to fend for yourself for your sick little self.

Though shalt remember, that the most important things in life, aren't things

In the wise words of Atticus, I too hope to arrive to my death late, in love and a little drunk. And to be honest, I don't think a single person that I know, doubts I will. When that day comes and want to look back and know that I truly did everything that I could to live my life. Hash tag no regrets. While admittedly it's a semi morbid conversation to have, it's a seriously important one too. And you know me, always willing to take one for the team... but I'm not the only one... So let's get this semi morbid party started!

Thou shalt remember, that confidence is a lesson, not a blessing

They say that confidence is like a muscle - the more you use it, the stronger it becomes. First of all, who is they? And second of all. They is absolutely right.

In the same way you don't just wake up one day with abs, you also don't just wake up one day with the confidence level: selfie no filter. It's a windy road and unfortunately there's no GPS to help generate an estimated time of arrival. Though speaking from personal experience, you usually arrive somewhere around your late twenties. Would you agree Doll?

Thou shalt remember, that the greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it...

Hands up those of you who are 348% done with unrealistic and superficial New Years resolutions? FYI, both of my hands are up. I'm not even going to try and kid myself into thinking new year new me, because we all know... new year, same train wreck. Seriously, I haven't had my car serviced in 12 months and my tax is two years overdue. Oops. So instead of making New Years resolutions, this year I'm pledging my commitment to reducing waste, and it's going to much further than just green bags and keep cups... So this week, I've called upon the expertise of Lottie Dalziel, the founder of Banish no time to waste, to help teach team train wreck how we can reduce our waste and ecological footprint.

Thou shalt remember that nothing will ruin your 20s more than thinking you should have your life together.

When Charles Dickens wrote, “it was the best of times it was the worst of times” he must have been talking about his twenties. That glorious, yet tumultuous time when you’re awkwardly straddling childhood and adulthood, trying desperately to officially make the transition from doe-eyed dependent to full-fledged freedom and independence. But no one tells you how fast it actually happens.

Thou shalt remember, that life begins when diets end...

That's right kweens, you heard it here first... I am done with diets, and after this episode - I hope you will be too! Disclaimer, the following interview with Sports dietician Leanne Ward, who you might know from instagram as The Fitness Dietician, was so chock full of juicy educational tidbits, that I've split it into part one and part two... because the first rule of ditching the diet, is realising it's totally fine to come back for seconds.

Thou shalt remember, that the only way to find your voice, is to use it

Confidence is like a muscle - the more you use it, the stronger it becomes. The problem is, contrary to my own useless advice, it's not always as simple as whacking on some Ariana Grande and jamming in the car (although I assure you, that really does help sometimes). So this week, I'm so excited to welcome Voice Coach Sally Prosser to the show. This slay kween, really is the jill-of-all-trades and knows a thing or two... actually, more like, 22 about how to use your voice to your advantage. Having previously worked as a TV and Radio journalist and owning a speech and drama school, Sally now offers bespoke coaching and online courses to help people take control of their voice, power their sound and engage their audience, whoever they may be. Trust me when I say you're going to want to stop what you're doing and listen to what Sally has to say...
