Rank #2: Mike and Shannon Kemp and What It Takes To Be A Multi-Unit Franchisee.

Podcast cover
Read more
We have a great show today.  We are meeting with multi-unit franchisees and husband and wife team Mike and Shannon Kemp. Mike and Shannon speak about what it takes to be multi-unit franchisees, how/when they knew they were ready to expand beyond one brand/unit and their entrepreneurial advice on growing and investing in a franchise system for more than 20 years. Here's quick background on them:
In 1994, Mike was working part-time as an employee for Play It Again Sports the store buys and sells quality, gently-used sports equipment and gear (the franchise currently has more than 300 franchised stores in the U.S. and Canada). After Mike was brought on as regional general manager for the owner and helped him open six additional Play It Again Sports across North Carolina, he decided to go into business for himself. In 2003, Mike opened his own Play It Again Sports in Winston-Salem, and later went on to open up a second location in Greensboro.

That's when Shannon Kemp's wheels started turning. She saw her husband's success and saw the other sister brand stores, Plato's Closet and Once Upon A Child, expanding in the community as well. Plato's Closet is the same frugal recycling concept as Play It Again Sports but centers around clothing, shoes and accessories and is catered toward teens while Once Upon A Child caters to the kid demographic. Shannon wanted to bring something for women in the community and decided to bring the missing sister brand Style Encore to Winston-Salem in 2014. Most recently, she will be celebrating the grand opening of a second Style Encore in Greensboro.

In part 2, we meet with a legend in franchising, Lawrence Doc Cohen.  Doc Cohen discusses why he choose franchising as opposed to starting his own concept.

We have a great show today.  We are meeting with Gigi Butler, the founder of Gigi’s Cupcakes.  People across the country know Gigi from her appearance on “Undercover Boss” on CBS, and her journey is the American Dream come true.

Soon after opening, Gigi’s Cupcakes became a Nashville delicacy dessert of choice and now, nine years later, it has expanded to more than 100 locations across 24 states…making Gigi’s the largest cupcake franchise in the country!

Moving to Nashville in 1994 from California to pursue a career in music at 15-years old, Gigi supported her dream by cleaning houses during the day and singing in honky tonks at night. While she loved music, she also had a passion for baking. As the years went by, she decided to take a chance on her cooking talents instead of her voice. She took a huge risk and opened a cupcake boutique in a high rent area just off Music Row in Nashville in Feb of 2008- not far from the bars where she sang. Soon after opening, Gigi’s Cupcakes became a Nashville delicacy dessert of choice and now, nine years later, it has expanded to more than 100 locations across 24 states….making Gigi’s the largest cupcake franchise in the country!

We are meeting with Dr. Alejandro Badia, Co-founder and CEO or OrthoNow and Christine Dura, Chief Development Officer of OrthoNOW.  OrthoNOW® is a network of specialized urgent care Centers focused on treating the full range of orthopedic and sports medicine injuries on a walk-in basis. These injuries include anything related to the foot, ankle, knee, hip, wrist, hand, elbow, shoulder and spine, in addition to pre-concussion testing. We treat aches, breaks, pains, and strains.
OrthoNOW® was founded by accomplished and world-renowned orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Alejandro Badia, in 2010. Prior to Dr. Badia opening the first OrthoNOW Urgent Care Center in Doral, Florida, he had taken advantage of one of the most common medical business opportunities: a general practice urgent care. His urgent care franchise focused on general internal medicine, but he wanted to specialize in orthopedic care. He continually saw a need for an orthopedic urgent care center when his patients with orthopedic needs would come see him long after they sustained their initial injury. Dr. Badia knew he had to do something to cut down on the time it takes for orthopedic injuries to be addressed, so he closed down his general urgent care franchise and opened the first OrthoNOW Center in 2010.

Rank #16: Franchise Interviews Meets with the Planet Smoothie Franchise Opportunity

Podcast cover
Read more
The Planet Smoothie franchise began in Atlanta during the mid-1990s, when smoothies were first beginning to be seen as a food offering on their own rather than part of an extended menu. Up until then smoothies were almost completely associated with hardcore health fanatics — people who spent a lot of time at the gym and were fanatical about counting calories  More Americans were looking to slim down and become healthier, a trend which continues through today, and smoothies became seen as a way to enhance a healthy lifestyle without sacrificing taste or convenience. As more people discovered smoothies, the market exploded, and Planet Smoothie quickly spread throughout the Southeast, becoming a dominant brand across the Southeastern and Northeastern United States. The opportunity to rapidly expand Planet Smoothie excited a team of veteran franchise executives at Kahala Brands, which acquired Planet Smoothie in 2015. Under their leadership, Planet Smoothie has developed the capabilities and resources, such as improved supply chains, more purchasing power and a single operating system, to accelerate growth and drive stronger results for franchisees.Planet Smoothie is on the move. The hunger for convenient, healthy and great-tasting food, with a transparent list of recognizable ingredients, continues to grow. A customer survey by public relations giant Edelman found that 83% of customers want that combo of good nutrition and great taste, for example, and only 50% of them think the food-and-beverage industry is doing a good job. We are meeting with Stacey Wopnford, Brand President at Planet Smoothie. Read more
We are meeting with Dustin Black, Founder and CEO of Black Tie Moving.  Dustin is no stranger to the moving industry. From the time he was a child, Black worked for his father’s moving company, learning the ins and outs of the industry while also getting a behind the curtain view of exactly who homeowners were trusting their belongings.  With eight locations open and 24 new franchise territories under development, Black Tie Moving is rapidly expanding across the nation.  Black was not impressed with caliber of movers available to consumers at that time, so rather than following in his dad’s footsteps, he turned his sights on baseball – even gaining a college scholarship before a knee injury sidelined him and removed him from school.
After a terrible experience using a moving company that damaged $34,000 of his furniture, Black knew there was a hole to fill in the moving industry. In 2013, he founded Black Tie Moving, a luxury moving and relocation concept, with the goal to create the first professional moving service customers could trust and rely on. Black holds his movers to a higher standard of presentation and professionalism, while offering affordable comprehensive moving services. His company is so successful, it has garnered the interest of several big name celebrities, including Carrie Underwood as a client and Rascal Flatts lead singer, Gary LeVox as a business partner.
