“We are so in a reactive mode, in our heads, trying to make meaning… we don’t allow ourselves time just to slow down and notice what is happening right now.” ~Monica Martin

The process of becoming who we are…

Monica Martin is the woman you want with you whenever you’re feeling uncertain. Her presence and incredibly soothing voice always give me the feeling that everything is going to be okay — or even better than okay. AND in this interview Monica shares how to tap into and trust that grounding, connected energy within yourself through meditation, visualization, “felt-sense” experiencing in your body, process art and… boxing!

“Boxing has been one of THE biggest parts of my healing… it’s so important that, especially now, people find a way to express their emotions in a physical activity… because it helps you actually transmute the emotions and it helps you find your own way of expression.” ~Monica Martin

I really enjoy… confronting the fear… going through it, because I find that’s where life is.  It’s confronting what you’re most terrified of and working through it and getting to the other side of that. So I’m confronting my fear all the time. ~Jennifer Gardner

The thrill of the “doing”…

I met Jennifer Gardner because she took a risk. Already a litigating lawyer with a thriving private practice in Los Angeles, Jennifer (who is also an outstanding photographer BTW), decided to follow her curiosity and create a podcast, called RoamHowl. And she reached out to me, someone whose show she had heard, but whom she had never met for help in launching!

RoamHowl is a series of conversations with multi-talented, multi-passionate people doing really cool, interesting things.

Jennifer is out to discover stories and communicate them to help her listeners “find their pack” and to debunk the myth that you either are creative or you’re not, and to show that you are not defined solely by your profession — but you can in, in fact, be more.

It’s just been miles and miles of clicks that led me to this place… just curiosity, following this lead, following that lead and now, here I am!  ~Jennifer Gardner, on discovering podcasts, resources, and connections online

“It was, for me, a self-help tool. It was a way in which I experienced a very deep transformation in who I was as a woman — as a person.” ~Elsie Escobar, on podcasting

How do we, as content creators, begin to break the patterns and shift the narrative? It might not be what you think…

Elsie Escobar is one of my podcasting idols. Actor, yoga teacher, podcast producer & advocate (you can see why we connect with each other so well), her original podcast, Elsie’s Yoga Class was one of the first I ever listened to — before I even really knew what a podcast was!

Now, after listening to her for years and working one on one with Elsie through her E-League mentoring program, I have a whole new appreciation for the question, “What else is possible?” because for Elsie (and for me), podcasting is about so much more than downloads, sponsors and statistics.

And no matter what kind of content you are creating in the world, through social media, a blog, a podcast, videos, workshops, your business, your art, etc, YOU have the option to follow the pack or carve a whole new path to shift the conversation. Find out how, listen now…

“Go to the things that YOU really resonate with because that’s the conversation we need to have, and THEN you frame it on your point of view because that’s going to start to break patterns.” ~Elsie Escobar, on media consumption and creation

"It’s about being happy, it’s about living your life- not anyone else's life. But it's the life that YOU want to live, the life that makes you happy, that makes you share with the world what it is that you want to share.  ~Aimee DuFresne, Episode 063

Do you ever find yourself dangling the proverbial carrot in front of yourself? "I'll be happy when I..." or "If only I could just..." or "I'll take a break once I..."

Aimee DuFresne is no stranger to this trap, but through decluttering (inside and out), focusing on joy and doubling down on self-care and travel, she's found a way to spring that trap and live an unconventional life.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Aimee’s big “Joy Ride” and what it's all about
  • Her adventures on her book tour that brought her to the west coast, and her time house sitting
  • What self-care really means (not just the buzz-word version) and some of Aimee's favorite practices
  • How Aimee balances EVERYTHING out in her life
  • The day that her life completely changed
  • How the impostor voice shows up for Aimee especially around entrepreneurship and being an author
  • Aimee’s view on success

Aimee's top life tip: Trust the unfolding.

“This is really exciting, but does it give me freedom?” ~Aimee DuFresne

Rank #10: 085: Devote yourself to the spark within with Charlotte Elea

Podcast cover
Read more

Episode 085. “I’ve discovered that the most powerful way for me to use my voice is in sharing my story and sharing my breakthrough." ~Charlotte Elea

Charlotte Eléa's voice has changed. No, not in that Peter-Brady-hits-puberty kind of way (look it up). Since we last spoke waaaay back on episode 34, the intuitive guide has shifted her attention from dream interpretation (utilizing the tarot deck for analysis) to helping women achieve their big, beautiful breakthrough moments.

Maybe changed isn’t accurate. She’s still a guide and healer. But pivot seems too cubicle-bound and corporate a word to use in her presence. How do I effectively communicate her belief that we’re all worthy of being heard, healed, and transformed?

Thankfully, I can leave that up to Charlotte herself.

With the rebranding of her business and the writing of her first book To Be Worthy, she says she’s answered a calling to serve in a way that’s more integrated but no less authentic than her previous project.

There’s some much gratitude for the journey in Charlotte’s voice and I guess that hasn’t changed since the last time I interviewed her. She’s just as authentic in spirit and purpose now as she was in episode 34.

Instead, I’ll say that Charlotte Eléa’s voice has emerged -- from a place of her own struggles with unworthiness.

It’s informed -- by the lessons she learned while nurturing Dream Intuition.

It’s adapted -- to new methods of sharing her message.

It’s evolved -- to become a powerful tool, both in print and online.

And it’s a joy to catch up with her to find out how she’s using her voice these days.

“I looked at everything I saw being done and asked: What else? What isn’t here? How could I do this differently? What is a way to approach this problem that only I can (or will?)” ~Andrea Klunder

Swimming my way out of the impostor cycle…

Last week I released a very fun, funny, insightful, inspiring interview with Jennifer Briney of Congressional Dish podcast and we both admitted to having imposter-y feelings independently of each other on the same day AT the same podcasting conference.

She was there to give a keynote about her brilliant listener supported funding model for her show in a month when her revenue had dipped to its lowest point in quite some time.

And I was pitched by her agent to interview her on my show in a month when my download numbers were abysmal b/c I basically hadn’t published an episode for 6 weeks.

She was thinking “Who am I to talk to all these people about getting listeners to fund your podcast?”

And I was thinking “Who am I to have a keynote speaker with thousands of followers on my dinky little show?”

The other day, I was teaching yoga to a group of my Kindergarten and pre-K students and one of the things that we do is toward the end, after they’ve gotten to run around in circles and make animals sounds and play crazy yoga games, we have quiet coloring time before our rest time (i.e. savasana.) I asked them to drawan animal of their choice playing however they would like and I took out some crayons to join them.

I drew some water and a fish jumping out with a sunshine. And one kid said, “Why is that fish in the sky? Fish don’t fly.”

And I said, “Oh, he’s jumping out of the water.”

Another kid said, “but a fish can’t stay out of water very long or it will die.”

And I said, “That’s true. But just like when you go swimming, if you go under water you hold your breath, a fish can hold it’s breath for just a moment when it jumps out and then breath again when it goes back under water.”

One kid said, “Yeah, and you can wear goggles under water so you can see.”

This seemed to satisfy them and so I drew a face under the water, to which one said, “Why is there a face under the water?”

I said, “Oh that’s me, swimming with goggles on. Doesn’t that look like me?”

“No,” she said. You don’t even have a body.

“I haven’t drawn it yet, “ I replied.

“And why is your mouth like that?” another one asked.

“I’m making a fish face.” I said.

“Why?”

“Because it’s fun!” I defended.

They considered my drawing skeptically for a moment, until one said. “That really doesn’t look like you and you should draw a bathing suit.” And they went back to drawing their own masterpieces.

And I looked at my juvenile crayon drawing, thinking “Well I’m not an artist.” AND viscerally remembering the feeling in my cheeks of being ashamed and frustrated as a child when I couldn’t make my art look the way I wanted. Of fearing someone would laugh at what I made.

AND I was also thinking, “Dang. Kindergarteners are mean!”

"Our baseline isn’t happiness, our baseline is contentment.. We have to actively seek happiness." ~Sarah Buino

Connection is the only way through all of this...

What if we could stop talking to ourselves like a jerk?

What if we could give up shame completely?

What if happiness was only a perspective shift away?

In this episode, I'm talking with licensed clinical social worker, certified addictions counselor and Certified Daring WayTM (that's Brene Brown's program!) facilitator, Sarah Buino of Head/Heart Therapy all about:

  • Sarah’s struggle with impostor syndrome & shame
  • How did Sarah get into her work, specifically with addiction counseling
  • Why Sarah calls herself a “joy pusher” and “empathy snob”
  • How does Sarah keep herself moving forward
  • Happiness vs. contentment
  • How to shift perspective
  • Using music as therapy
  • How to stop talking to yourself as though you’re an a*@hole!
  • What Sarah is excited about!

  • Best advice for mental health from Sarah

“Everybody’s crazy, everyone. Including me. And anybody who says they’re not crazy- run. Because they’re the craziest of them all.” ~Sarah Buino

Resources & Links

As far as holiday self-care for mental health and shame here are a couple of things from Sarah:

  • Take breaks. Lots of time with family can be intense, so make sure there's down time.
  • Pick your battles. There's still likely to be discord in politically diverse families and while we all must remain diligent in our social justice quests, conservative Uncle Joe probably won't change his mind because of that one fact you share. People don't respond to facts anyway...they respond to feelings.
  • Be mindful. Family can push our buttons more fiercely and quickly than anyone else and shame is often one of the strong emotions that gets kicked up by our nearest and dearest. Shame wants us to either fight, flee or people-please, so when you feel those urges coming on, take a time out!
  • Reach out. When you do experience shame, the best thing to do is connect with someone who can understand.

“The impostor voice wants to protect you by keeping you small and safe. The intuitive voice wants to help you by elevating your platform to rise to the occasion. It may be risky. But it’s probably worth it.” ~Andrea Klunder

So when you have both the voice of your creative impostor AND the voice of your deepest intuition clamoring for attention in your brain, how on earth do you know who is saying what and who to listen to?

Well, you need mad tools, skills and support!

In this episode, I talk with psychotherapist and kirtan musician Ellen Katz about:

  • the roots of impostor syndrome,
  • how we connect with our “inner wise person”,
  • the importance of surrounding yourself with authentic teachers who can show you the way when you’re struggling,
  • integrating science, art and spirituality in a professional setting,

Rank #18: 092: Think of yourself as a vocal professional with Wendy Parman

Podcast cover
Read more

Episode 092. "Think of it [voice] as symbolic of many things about our central identity, let’s say, and not really even symbolic but literally, how do we express ourselves day-to-day about who we are the most? I guess what I’m trying to say is that working on your voice can [be] a whole life-changing experience." ~Wendy Parman

What do an opera soprano, a university lecturer, and a podcaster have in common? They’re all vocal professionals! In fact, according to performer and voice teacher Wendy Parman, you’re probably a vocal professional.

Think about that for a moment: anyone who leans heavily on their voice, either to create art or do their job is a pro. Salesperson or singer. Teacher or actor.

With that in mind, why are so many of us trying to muscle our voice into places it just doesn’t want (or need) to go? If you’re doing so because you don’t feel like you deserve the right to occupy your space, listen up! You should fill your corner of the world to capacity.

On your own vocal merits.

Wendy’s teaching and performing style is a refreshing take in the often harsh, anonymous world of online critiques - those knee-jerk, uninformed responses that inevitably land in YouTube comments, podcast reviews, and post-show Twitter feeds. Side note: if you’ve posted that kind of analysis in the past, Wendy’s insight will give you pause before you do so again. She’ll also arm you with deeper insight into why conditioning the uniqueness out of our voices (or anyone else’s) is a recipe for inauthenticity.

Unpacking that for a moment, Wendy cautions her clients against their desire to sound like someone else. That’s a common fallback position for anyone not yet in command of their power, this belief that forcing Adele’s dark, dramatic tones onto their own will make them more listenable, more successful.

Listenability doesn’t stem from mimicry.

I hear you thinking, “But Andrea, isn’t there a fine line between listenability (or castability if you’re a performer) and standing on principle for my unique sound?”  Glad you asked! Vocal styles (like Paris fashions) go in and out of favor. From flourishes to fry, there’s always a current “it” sound. But if that’s not your sound, don’t force it! Wendy suggests learning how to harness control and foster good technique - think breathwork, warmups, and new-to-me cool-down exercises.

Once you learn how sound is made, you’ll get comfortable with what your voice has to say.

Rank #19: 087: Creative Impostor stories for you and happy birthday to me!

Episode 087. "And during the whole experience, I thought I SHOULD make an audio journal, document what I was going through, but the few times I tried to record, I either sobbed or I just sat there staring at the time code counting up the seconds of my not knowing what to say." ~Andrea Klunder

It's my birthday week! I don’t know about you, but birthdays are always a time of reflection for me — what has this past year meant for me and what lies ahead.

It’s also a time to celebrate myself! And I am not above asking YOU for a gift. That’s right — and it will not cost you a thing, nor do you need my mailing address.

What I would love more than anything is a story, an anecdote, a short acknowledgment that all the labor and love (and work) I put into producing this show means something to someone other than me!

Here’s how…

  1. Go to thecreativeimpostor.com/titlelist
  2. Pick one of the episode titles listed there that resonates with you — it could be because you listened to that episode and it pinged something for you — or maybe you didn’t even listen to the episode, it’s just the phrase that holds some meaning.
  3. Write (200-300 words) or record audio (2-3min) -ish of a short story about how that phrase, idea, episode either influenced you or has shown up for you in your creative life or work.  You don’t need to do any editing. Even just a voice memo on your phone will be great.

This is to help me celebrate 100 episodes which is coming up this spring!!!

I know, I know, if you are not already a podcaster, recording your voice for public consumption may feel terrifying. Let me assure you that since you are a part of The Creative Impostor community, your story is going to be relevant to other listeners in this community.  If you share genuinely and authentically you will get nothing but love and knowing head nods back.

Also sharing your insights, wins, fears, major failures, resilience, discoveries can be SO liberating and affirming. (truthfully, this is one of the main reasons I podcast.)

And if you really want to contribute but you still feel too uncomfortable, you can always ask me to read or play your story anonymously.

Of course if you want to shout your website, blog, etsy shop, podcast etc from the rooftops, include where we can find you!

Now, if there’s anything I’ve learned from teaching podcasting to high school students, it’s that sometimes it’s best to lead by example.

So I picked a few of MY favorite titles and have some stories for you.

Episode 069. "I had to be able to sit there in that uncomfortable place of this is not as good as I want it to be — and that’s okay."~Robyn Conley Downs

I discovered Robyn when she needed a podcast editor for her new show the Feel Good Effect. That was a year ago and since then, I have listened in detail to every single one of her episodes and she continues to amaze me with her big heart, inquisitive mind, business savvy, and seemingly superhuman ability to "do it all."

As we discuss in this episode, there's nothing superhuman about it and, in reality, there's a give and take to everything. In fact, in terms of mindset, one of Robyn's favorite sayings is "gentle is the new perfect."

I love it and you're going to love Robyn.
