I listened to a few of the podcasts and couldn’t stop listening. I have since in the past week listened to around 12 of them and they are all great. I’m not an expert and I’m not even a coach, I am a military member and I live the life a lifting. I am constantly feeling that a lack of knowledge has caused all my aches and pains and just with your knowledge and the unilateral training I have finally been able to lift stronger and smarter. I appreciate what you are doing with this pod cast and I look forward to listening to all of them and finding my way into the life of coaching. Thanks. Semper Fidelis Michael

#24 Upper Back Training Secrets to Avoid Shoulder Injuries & Increase Power!

Podcast cover
Read more
In this episode, Joe shines the spotlight on a neglected group of muscles that need a lot more attention than they receive. You may not be able to see the musculature of your upper back when looking in the mirror, but that doesn't mean you should ignore these super important muscles.

Joe explains why so many athletes (regardless of sport) have pre-existing shoulder injuries when they come to him. The "anterior" dominance of sport and daily activities (driving, texting, typing, etc.) has created a society of shortened pecs, poor posture and weak upper backs. When you couple these issues with incompetent personal trainers and coaches (that don't know how to properly design programs), you have a recipe for disaster.

Joe explains exactly how you should be training your upper back in order to correct/prevent shoulder problems and improve your posture - while simultaneously improving power output! He even reveals his Top 6 "Uncommon" Back Exercises that you rarely (if ever) see being performed at your local health club. (You NEED to  incorporate these into your training.)

After listening to this episode, you will undoubtedly have a new perspective on how to train this group of muscles, as well as a new-found respect for their importance.

Joe kicks off the show by introducing this week's sponsor, then he shares some fun stories from the amazing time he and Ashley had at Triple H's 50th Birthday party. After the show intro, Joe answers 2 training questions: The first question is from a listener who's confused about the theory of "muscle confusion" :)) He wants to know if it's better to constantly "switch things up" or will too much variety hinder his progress? The second question comes from an advanced lifter who's going on a 2-week business trip and wants to "get a sick pump" each day...but the problem is he only has 20-30 minutes and ZERO access to weights or equipment. (Joe ends up creating a solution to the problem by turning 3 ordinary bodyweight movements into 3 extraordinary, pump-producing muscle-builders!) You definitely don't want to miss this episode!
