Rank #3: Franchising as a Side Hustle with Frank Agin

Podcast cover
Read more

Frank Agin is the founder and president of AmSpirit Business Connections, a franchise opportunity that entrepreneurs and professionals can work in conjunction with what they are already doing. In addition, he is the author of several networking books and host of the Networking Rx podcast, which provides ideas, insight and motivation on making the most of professional networking.

Key Takeaways:

[0:18] Today’s episode of Franchise Euphoria is brought to you by IndyFranchiseLaw.com, a leading resource in the franchise space. Head over to IndyFranchiseLaw.com learn more!

[0:59] Josh introduces today’s guest, Frank Agin, the founder and president of AmSpirit Business Connections.

[2:03] Josh welcomes Frank to Franchise Euphoria.

[2:14] Frank explains that AmSpirit is a networking franchise that brings individuals together who are looking to meet other business professionals.

[2:42] Frank is considered the founder of AmSpirit despite having bought out the original owner when it was ran under a different name, Network Professionals.

[4:25] AmSpirit is short for American Spirit, which is a trademark Frank purchased when he was in law school.

[6:46] AmSpirit helps to create groups to open up networking opportunities for business professionals typically “solo-preneurs.” These groups typically meet on a weekly basis.

[9:49] While there isn’t a true digital component to the AmSpirit chapters, they do take advantage of social media to get the word out about their events and opportunities.

[11:40] AmSpirit is starting to do more with technology in regard to training, but Frank finds that the face to face interaction is irreplaceable.

[13:15] Relative to other franchise costs, AmSpirit is considerably affordable at $10,000 in franchise fees. This is because being a franchisee isn’t necessarily a full-time job. Most franchisees use this opportunity as a side job in addition to their day job.

[14:35] AmSpirit is looking for franchisees who are energetic, outgoing, reasonably successful in a business already, have a need to network, and have a desire to help other people become successful through networking.

[15:10] Frank has found it can be challenging if you rely your franchise growth on franchise consultants, especially if your franchise concept is very niche and doesn’t necessarily fit their experience.

[16:24] In addition to authoring ten books about networking, Frank hosts his own podcast called Network Rx that allows him to share his tips on how you can become successful through networking.

[18:12] If you’d like to get in touch with Frank, you can visit www.FrankAgin.com or email him at FrankAgin@AmSpirit.com. He’s also active on LinkedIn.

Rank #6: Don't Rush In To A Franchise

Podcast cover
Read more

I'm not sure why, but there are a lot of people rushing into franchising lately. Don't get me wrong, of course I don't think franchising is bad. Franchising is awesome, especially when done well and with a great  system. But lately I  noticed a lot of people who are just rushing to get into a system. This can be caused by a few things like excitement, franchisor pressure, or a fear of losing the opportunity. You should NEVER rush in to a business decision!

Rank #7: Three Things To Watch Out For In Your Franchise Agreement

Podcast cover
Read more

In my legal practice I come across many issues in the franchise space. Many of these can be avoided if you do your homework ahead of time (which is why I always urge people to have representation before signing an agreement). There are three very common issues in franchising that if not taken care of up front can really come back to bite you later on.  These involve territory, termination, and trade mark. Don't make the costly mistake of not fully understanding what you are signing. Listen in to learn how to avoid these mistakes before they happen.

Rank #15: Michael E. Gerber: E-Myth Creator & Founder, Entrepreneurial Guru & Visionary

Podcast cover
Read more

It was a thrill of a lifetime to have Mr. Michael E. Gerber on my podcast.  During the course of our discussion, Michael touches on so many important topics related to the journey of all entrepreneurs.  We talk about Michael's own awakening.  How he went from running away from his gifts and talents to utilizing them to live in and for his true calling.   We discuss the power of entrepreneurship, how its changed and evolved over time, how to discover your true entrepreneurial spirit within, the power of franchising systems when done right, and much much more. Mr. Gerber is a very well known author, speaker, coach, small business guru, and the king of “systems” and “systems implementation” to help make small businesses efficient, effective and practical.  He is widely known for his best selling E-myth books that are like bibles to small businesses and their owners.  I could go on and on as Mr. Gerber has done so many wonderful and incredible things on his journey, but instead I will let you listen in below to the man himself.

Action Tips & Interesting Thoughts:

  • Most entrepreneurs are technicians suffering from an entrepreneurial seizure.
  • Don’t let where you start dictate where you go. Make your own future in your own vision.
  • Creating a selling system is key to entrepreneurial success.
  • It’s never to late to go after your dreams. Michael was 41 when he wrote E-myth.
  • Safe is the enemy of creative.
  • Faulty assumption:  that most small business owners understand business.
  • Michael walked into McDonald's one day to buy a hamburger, and walked out with a vision for E-Myth.
  • True dreamers have no inclination to pursue a personal dream but rather an impersonal dream.  It is not about me. It is about them.
  • True entrepreneurs exist with a condition that is stuck outside of them.
  • Humans are born with the natural ability to create.  But we are not born with the skills of entrepreneurship.
  • Creativity creates conflict with the powers that be.  It creates confusion.  Creativity creates disorder, and that is what is so extraordinary about it.  And that is why it is killed in most of us from the beginning.
  • Passion is developed more than it is discovered.
  • Becoming excellent at something can develop passion.
  • If you are too entrepreneurial, franchising may NOT be right for you.
  • Fear of failure drives people away from what they were meant to do.
  • The Dreaming Room™  is an exciting project that Michael is working on.  It is an incubator to awaken the entrepreneurial personality to the point where they are absolutely clear on 4 things:  1) The Dreamer; 2) The Thinker; 3) The Storyteller; and 4) The Leader.

[5:24] Grand Welcome is conveniently integrated into all of the major vacation rental companies such as VRBO and AirBnB.

[0:59] Josh introduces today’s guest, Ryan Junk who is the president of CycleBar.

[2:37] Josh welcomes Ryan to Franchise Euphoria.

[3:15] Ryan shares some background information with Josh regarding what led him to the opportunity with CycleBar.

[6:26] CycleBar is a brand that started in 2013 and began franchising in 2015. Xponential Fitness acquired CycleBar in 2017.

[11:52] Before CycleBar franchised, they had two locations. When Xponential Fitness acquired CycleBar, the previous franchisors had sold 283 franchise locations.

[27:24] When Xponential Fitness acquired CycleBar, one of the first things they realized was that the store blueprint was too large, so they immediately shrunk it down to a reasonable size.

[29:20] Ryan found that in order to help bail out existing franchisees, they had to do a crash course in selling memberships to help make up for their looming overhead. They found that reoccurring revenue was the best solution for their franchisees.

[37:20] Josh poses a question to Ryan regarding the future of the franchisees who opened before Xponential Fitness and whether they will likely move locations once their lease is up.

[38:34] Ryan shares the qualities that make up the ideal CycleBar franchisee.

[42:01] Xponential Fitness owns 8 different fitness modalities, and Ryan believes that this diversity gives them an advantage on keeping the industry unique and not oversaturated.

[4:51] Larry explains the idea behind Speed Pro Imaging and what services they provide.

[7:32] What qualities make up the ideal Speed Pro Imaging franchisee?

The Importance of Maintaining a Niche with Ken and Ryan Parsons of Brothers Gutters

Podcast cover
Read more

Ken graduated college with a History degree in 1996 and began teaching shortly after. Ken kept busy in the summer working as a gutter installer for a local company. By the end of the season he became inspired to learn the gutter trade and start his own business. In 1999, Ken essentially threw his degree into the gutter and started the company that would later by called “The Brothers that just do Gutters”. By 2002, the business had achieved great success. Ken realized he needed a partner to take his operation to the next level. Who better to fill this role than his own brother, Ryan Parsons?

Ryan had just finished earning his degree when Ken began recruiting him to join the gutter trade. After working two years for a start-up as a graphic designer, Ryan agreed to team up with his big brother temporarily while searching for a new job. During this time, he came to share Ken’s vision and by 2004 he was co-owner of business. Ryan now holds the titles of both Co-Owner and Chief Solutionist©.

Key Takeaways:

[1:06] Josh introduces today’s guests, Ken and Ryan Parsons, the co-founders of Brothers Gutters.

[1:33] Ken gives a brief overview of what led this duo to start their own gutters franchise.

[6:02] Initially Ken and Ryan were getting inquiries from clients about doing more than just gutters in their services, but they explain why this decision ultimately didn’t pan out in the end.

[9:00] A lot of the reason for Ken and Ryan’s “re-focus” had to do with the education they were receiving at the time. While they were interested in learning other trades, they were learning a lot about different business principles which encouraged them to select an industry of expertise they could focus on.

[11:58] Brothers Gutters focuses on both residential and commercial clients.

[14:33] The advantage Brothers Gutters has over someone who generally does housing work is that the level of expertise and care is unmatched.

[17:44] The ideal Brothers Gutter franchisee is someone who is in the gutter industry but they’re having problems systematizing and scaling their business.

[21:10] Ken touches on what it took to get them to a “passive” business where they can focus on other aspects of operations such as coaching the leaders they have hired to run the business.

[22:42] Ken and Ryan knew they wanted to franchise this business back in 2007 and then spent until 2014 crafting their model and perfecting the systems to make it a business that will run itself.

[9:09] Ron was inspired to create this model when he read Seth Goden’s book, The Purple Cow, which encourages reader to establish yourself as a “purple cow” in your business.

[13:16] Ron ultimately chose his industry because he saw an opportunity to make waves in a field that had recurring revenue, strong demand, and was an industry no one wanted to be in.

Identifying and Growing Your Niche with Peter Hans of Discovery Map

Podcast cover
Read more

Peter Hans started his career as a commercial banker based in Boston. He traveled around New England and studied at night for his MBA at Babson College. When he received his degree, he moved to Zurich, Switzerland, and became an investment banker. He lived there for six years and later London for six more. During that time, he was fortunate enough to travel to most every major European capital and also to Australia, Asia, and South America.

Shortly before leaving London, he married his wife and they moved back to the States to start a family. The lure of purchasing a company that merges travel maps and franchise ownership was two-fold for Peter: throughout his travels, he was always looking for a resource that provided quick and easy-to-find information about all of the businesses and services a place has to offer. Discovery Map International is exactly that resource. The second part of the equation is that he truly enjoys owning his own business, nurturing it, and watching it succeed, grow, and profit. It stands to reason that he not only owns the company as the franchisor, but also has jumped into the exciting shoes of franchise ownership himself.

Key Takeaways:

[0:18] Today’s episode of Franchise Euphoria is brought to you by IndyFranchiseLaw.com, a leading resource in the franchise space. Head over to IndyFranchiseLaw.com learn more!

[0:59] Josh introduces today’s guest, Peter Hans of Discovery Map franchise.

[2:29] Josh welcomes Peter to Franchise Euphoria.

[3:01] Peter tells the audience about his travels which ultimately led him to his industry.

[4:59] Discovery Map is essentially a business for caricature-drawn maps for specific communities used for advertisement purposes within a territory.

[11:12] The Discovery Map system typically involves one map per territory but from time to time multiple franchisees will own multiple territories.

[13:48] The maps involved with Discovery Map are not necessarily drawn to scale but rather to draw attention to specific commerce.

[18:35] Discovery Map relies on relationships with different vendors to mediate the printing of the maps, and the franchisees are responsible for the actual printing of the individual maps.

[19:51] The ideal Discovery Map franchisee is ideally someone with sales experience, but it is not a requirement. They must be good at engaging with people and look forward to building new relationships.
