SHOW TOPICS AND LINKS FOR EPISODE 29:

We made an epic road trip to attend the 11th annual Vintage Motorcycle Festival Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, AL.

  • 2015 Attendance: 69,264
  • Jon planned out the route (using: https://trips.furkot.com) that allowed us to touch five states along the way:

Nice route from Rico's place to Birmingham, AL

The route home was much less exciting...

  • We had a quick interview with Richard Worsham (Founder/Designer) from Janus motorcycles and we'll plan to have them back on the show for a longer conversation in the future.
  • We also had a conversation with a rider following a demo ride on a Motus MST.

A few pictures from the trip below and we have a ton of photos and videos that we are working on for future release.

The trio en route with the chase car keeping us in check.

Just a sampling of the bikes parked everywhere at Barber.

Rico got a leg over the supercharged Motus!

We ran into Lee Conn at the Motus block party and got a few minutes to catch up with him since episode 20.

Welcome to our first episode of 2016.  We want to wish everyone a Happy New Year and hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season.

We are adding a little sweetener to Patreon - First 5 people to pledge at the $5 level or higher will get a Loud Pipes t-shirt after confirmation of the first payment.

Rich wished both Rico and Jon a happy birthday.  Rico's special day was on December 27th and Jon's was on December 31st.

Jon explained that he was unable to attend Episode 35 due to doggie not doing very well and went to pick her up from the vet hospital.  Jon and Natalie had to make a hard choice and have to put Roxy to sleep.  She had a great 14 years with Natalie and 12 years with Jon.   She was also very loving on Rich when he visited.

Jon also thanked Rich for making a surprise visit to his birthday party that Natalie planned for his 40th birthday.

One of the first rides with the new windshield.

Rico is looking at a set of stage 2 cams for his Indian Roadmaster

Rich then wanted to point out a sweet 106 ci hop up kit for 96 ci Harley twin cams

Jon has been logging miles on the WRX and hit 5000 miles and have named her... Della, based on the license plate of DLA.

Rich received his Stein form Kline pottery.  Rich and Rico took ride to the pottery shop and on the way they found the Devil's whip.  More details about Kline pottery and the ride can be found in episode 22.  Rich also supported Michael in his Indiegogo campaign to get a new kiln.

Now that's a stein!

Review and prediction from 2015. (Rico did not partake and Jon had not join the guys yet.)

  • Yamaha R1 leads sales in 1000cc market.  Outcome: scored well in comparos, MotoAmerica series champ was on an R1.  Rico and Jon gave Rich a half point.
  • Electric bikes increase in popularity. Outcome: It sort of happened.  Victory released their first electric bike the Empulse TT after it acquired the motorcycle arm from Brammo.  Victory did run the bike at the Isle of Man in the electric division one lap race and finished 3rd.  Zero refreshed their lineup and added two new models.  Rico and Jon gave Rich 1 point
  • Harley announces plans for LiveWire production and bonus point for announcement coming at Sturgis.  Outcome: It didn't happen.  Harley in fact announced that the LiveWire will be a few yeas away and it didn't come out at Sturgis.  Rico and Jon gave Rich -1.5 points for this prediction for not coming true.

2016 Predictions

Rico:

  1. Indian and Victory increase in sales numbers
  2. Zero leads electric bike sales.
  3. Scrambler sales leaders, ducati, triumph.  Bonus: Yamaha next to do a scrambler.
  4. Naked bike sales leader - KTM 390.
  5. Sportster and street from HD sales increase.

Jon:

  1. Increased range for electric bikes and increase in sales again.
  2. Bike manufacturers adding forced induction.
  3. Rich rides the Guzzi flying fortress, loves it, and sells the Harley and purchase the flying fortress.
  4. Subaru continues high safety ratings.
  5. Rico will buy Wendy a motorcycle.

Rich:

  1. Electric bikes/cars sales will decrease due to cheaper gas/oil prices.
  2. Large front wheel trend has hit peak and will decrease.
  3. New custom tread comes out in 2016.
  4. Something new from HD - for new/female riders.
  5. Demo ride of the Multistrada enduro will be cool, but not the one to buy.

The Raleigh North Carolina lost a major face in the motorcycle world and drag racing during December with the passing of Ray Price.

Rank #5: 42: Rico returns, Bagger Mountain Ride, plus Indian and Victory Demo Rides

Podcast cover

In this episode we welcome Rico back from his vacation, recharged and ready to rock the show.  Rico returns with a bang and the guys get right into talking about a day riding in the mounts.  Rich jumped on a rented Street Glide for the occasion to have some Bro-Time and we mix conversation from Rico's attendance of an Indian / Victory Demo days event.

TOPICS:

  • Rico gave the guys a little review of his vacation with his wife Wendy to Costa Rica.
  • Rich and Rico talk about their meet up and day ride through Caesars head, Brevard (The Square Root Restaurant), Sierra Nevada Brewing, Lake Lure, and OMB as the final stop.
  • Rico attended and Indian / Victory demo event
    • Chief Vintage - Bike was OK, but front felt heavy and didn't like the windshield due to height and his size.  Had a rock fly up over windshield and hit his helmet.
    • Chief Dark Horse with stage 1 tuning - Rico was blown off the seat and not due to the lack of windshield and back rest, but the stage 1 tuned motor.  All that power and overall feel of the bike, put a smile on his face.
    • Springfield - New bike for 2016 and Rico liked this one as much as the Chieftain.
    • Scout - Fun bike, but was unable to hit the red line (9,000) and Rico's wife Wendy likes it and can see this being her first bike.
    • Scout Sixty - OK bike, nice package for a first bike or perhaps if you intend to only ever buy one, this may fit your bill.  Rico would say go with the Scout over the Scout Sixty for him or Wendy.
    • Victory Magnum - Sees why Rich likes the bike.  Instrument panel is further away from you when compared to Indian bikes.  It still has a good amount of wind buffeting.  Bike is very fast and corners well.  Overall Rico really enjoyed the bike, and would add it to his stable if he had the funds!  Also, Rico labels the bike as the Cadillac due to performance and smooth ride, whereas the Indian is more Lincoln plush and comfy.  :)

U-TURN

NEW TOPICS

Pros:

  • gets warm very quickly (also a con, see below)
  • windproof and not overly bulky

Cons:

  • Was hoping the gloves were more a gauntlet, however the do not fit over his textile jacket sleeves
  • Lights on gloves are very hard to see in daylight, Red (Hottest)/ Yellow (Midway)/ Green (Min).  Somewhat difficult to turn on when hands are in the gloves.  Also, the gear starts at the highest setting.
  • No good documentation on any of the kit, especially wattage.
  • Coat appears to be 90W and gloves are 22W combined.  Important to know as a bike's electrical system only supports so much load.  ALL heated gear manufacturer's should stress more about this.
  • Be mindful of the polarity, if this is reversed you gear is on full high all the time!

Rich offers an alternative to keep your neck warm

Update on Matthew's Honda Magna project bike

  • Magna needs new carb boots and the front calipers need rebuilding.  About $150 in parts to get it fully back to where it should be.
  • Rich likes that V4 sound and is considering a used VFR project bike

MotoBlogging Meetup

  • Various moto-vloggers from NC, SC, TN, an GA are meeting up in the North Carolina mountains.  There will be a group ride, some camping, and the usual shenanigans.
  • We got into some of the planning details, which leads us toward our long riding episode later this year.
  • Possible routes include: The tail of the Dragon, the Skyway, Devil's Whip, and other great roads in the area.
  • Congrats to Matthew for almost reaching 100 subscribers on his YouTube Channel.
  • Sena - Rich has taken step to tech side on bike - Jon and Rich split cost for dual pack Sena 20s.
    • Matthew and Jon tested out with bike to car with Sena
    • Rich - test out bike at all? No, but I did take it out of the box :)

The boys are back...  After wrapping up our interviews from Atlanta we are back to our normal show format.  The guys talk about the Motorcycle Podcasters Challenge, the first Loud Pipes Ride, Road Hogs III ride, Atlanta trip recap, and some news.

Motorcycle Podcasters Challenge: We are going to have a little challenge between the Motorcycle Men, Throttled, and Loud Pipes.  The goal of this challenge is to encourage riding on a consistent bases and will award the podcast team that averages the most points over the month of August.  To help with the challenge the team at EatSleepRIDE will provide ride data and we'll be posting our progress on the ESR platform.  You can follow via the challenge web site or EastSleepRIDE.

First Loud Pipes Ride:  The guys joined up on June 24th and took a little ride from Blacksburg, SC to Little Switzerland, NA and back to Charlotte, NC.  This was a nice 300 mile trip that included the Diamonback (NC 226a).  Plan was to do the Devil's Whip, but thanks to Apple Maps we ended up riding the Diamondback a second time.

Road Hogs III Ride:  Rico was the only member of the Loud Pipes team to make the trip.  He talked about the ride and taming the snake.  We are planning to have another round table with the Road Hogs crew.

Atlanta Recap:  We talk about getting out of Atlanta and our trip to Tellico Plains, TN for the MotoVloggers meetup.  The riding was a great time, but the weather sucked as it rained on and off most of the day.  The group went to Bald River Falls via River Road and traveled the Cherohala Skyway.  Around mid afternoon the Loud Pipes Crew split from the MotoVloggers due to a long weekend from the Atlanta trip.  On the trip back to Charlotte the guys made a pit stop at Sierra Nevada Brewing.

Check out the MotoVloggers from the meetup:

In this exciting episode the guys have a special guest, cover some listener feedback, and have some fun with race car audio to support Rich's comment about the sound of the Ford GT race car.  The guys also welcome Steve and Tytis as two new members to the Riders of Loud Pipes! and thank them for their support.

Also, it's contest time, see bottom of this post for details

    LegUp Landin Gear

    • The guys sit down and chat with Pete Giarrusso from Pete G's Chopper Design Services
    • The LegUp Landin Gear system
    • Interview partly inspired by listener feedback.  Thomas writes that he was having trouble holding up his Electra Glide at low speeds and while he is considering a trike, was looking for alternatives.  He is also looking at Spyder's after hearing of Jon's enjoyment of his RSS.

Harley has new bike - Street Bob

    U-Turn:

    • Feedback from Walter that we started to talk about IMSA.  He also mentioned that this could be the last year of Corvettes and that Cadillac would be entering next year on as new platform for GM.  We have found some non-official information around Cadillac is going Prototype racing in 2017, but no information on the Corvette C7.R going anywhere.  Check here for some 2017 silly season update for IMSA racing.
    • We play race car sounds from inside the cars courtesy of the Marshall Pruett podcast and discuss which ones we think sound best

We celebrated a little by recording episode 50 live at JR Cigar in Mooresville, NC and hosted our second Biker Roundtable.  Thanks to those that joined us on the live stream and chat.  We plan to do more live streaming on a regular basis, so check out LouPipes.net/live for more details.

    Bikers Roundtable

A group of Moto-Vloggers (listed below) made a return trip to Tellico Plains, TN.  Check out the guys below for all the video from the adventure.

Some great roads were ridden while on this trip including; Tail of The Dragon, Cherohala Skyway,  and The Hellbender 28 (Part of Moonshiner).  These roads are ranked in top 4 of best routes in North Carolina per motorcycleroads.com.  The crew again stayed in Tellico Plains, TN at Hunts Lodge which is a great place for motorcycle rider.   The owner of the campground had a Manga V-65 so Matthew Williams had a nice chat with her.

On the way back from the mountains Matthew and Jon made a pit stop at JR Cigar to be part of the live show.  This was so far Jon's longest ride on the spyder and did little over 900 miles for the weekend.  He really enjoyed getting out and riding and found that traveling the interstates is not very exciting.  Now he see why Rich and Rico like the back roads so much.

Jon getting it done on the Tail of the Dragon!

We talk about attending the Charlotte EasyRiders Bike Show.  Rico was unable to attend, but Rich and Jon were joined by one of the Riders of Loud Pipes - Mike (aka 18two4ever).  This is the third year that the Loud Pipes team has attend the show and have to say this is the largest one so far.  A few cherry pops happened - first bike show for Mike and first long ride for Jon in a rain storm.

A few observations from the show:

    • Big Wheel baggers are still here, but conversations with a few builders hint that they are ready to be done with big front wheels
    • Custom vintage bikes are growing
    • Supercharged/Turbo bikes are growing

Rank #19: 39: The Fashionista has an IRON BUTT

    Podcast cover
    Read more

Our special guest Deb Gasque from The Fashionista has an IRON BUTT, joins us to share her long distance riding experience.  Being someone who likes coffee as much as do, we swapped our usual barley with beans for this episode

    Background

Originally from Utah, Deb moved to South Carolina and lives with her husband and garage full of bikes.  Starting out in 2006 as a passenger riding with her husband, she decided to take hold of the bars and ride her own.

    Bikes

SV650 was the first bike, but the husband felt this may be a bit much to learn on (see the next bike).

Honda Rebel 250 - In response to the first bike, Deb was a little put off by the "baby bike" but eventually came to appreciate the weight for learning, especially picking it up.

BMW GS650 (named GOAT after dropping a few times riding in the mountains)

    1994 BMW R1100 RS

    1994 BMW R1100 RSL - "new" bike :)

    The idea

During winter while not much riding is going on, Deb reads and article about about the Iron Butt.  Being a lover of a good challenge, Deb started mapping out how to complete the Iron Butt SaddleSore 1000

    The rides

After some conversation with her husband, the planning was on and off she went.  After completing the first Iron Butt ride Deb fell in love with long distance riding and has been hooked since.

In 2015 Deb completed the Bun Burner 1500 within the 36 allotted hours and covered 1600 miles.  This year she is planning to do the 50CC.  The plan is to leave from Jacksonville, FL and ride to San Diego CA.  On her way back she is planning to stop at the Barber Vintage Festival.  Look for the Loud Pipes crew to be there for an update on the ride as we enjoy our second trip to Barber.

This episode was great fun for us and we look forward to catching up with Deb in the future.

Rank #20: 45: Jon drops a HUGE surprise on our Atlanta road trip

    Podcast cover
    Read more

The guys talk about the trip from their homes to Atlanta, GA where they had some amazing interviews planned to feature on upcoming shows.  Since the trip produced a lot of great content, we will be releasing a show weekly over the next several weeks to get this content out as quickly as possible.

After our planning session for episode 46, the guys unpacked the gear and did a mock setup and test run to make sure all of the recording equipment was working properly.  During the chat Jon dropped a bomb on Rich and Rico!

    Ride to Atlanta:

    • Jon left Durham, NC around 6:30am.
    • Jon met up with Rich at D&D in Charlotte, NC around 9:30am
    • Rich loaded up Della (WRX) with his stuff and left around 10:00 am.
    • Met up with Rico at 11:30am and went to Yard House for lunch.
    • The guys jumped on I-85 South and rode off to Atlanta, GA
    • Hit Atlanta, GA around 4:15 pm - just the right time for rush hour traffic, which took the next hour to get to the hotel
    • After a little refresh - back into Della for the 3.5 mile drive to dinner, which only took 30 minutes!  Got to love big city traffic...
    • Sena Update - Works great with two, but once a third party was added there was open mic noise.  Didn't matter who started intercom.  Will have to play around with the Sena more to see if they can figure out the problem.  If you have any ideas, reach us on our Feedback page

    Audio Test and Jon's news:

    • Guys unpack gear and test the setup for the next day
    • Jon harassed the guys into doing an audio test
    • Rico started by asking Jon about his ride down
    • While chatting Jon casually drops a bomb!  You'll have to listen to find out. :)
