Rank #1: Episode 41: Coventry 10 Years Later

Podcast cover
Read more

This week, we wanted to revisit Coventry, 10 years later, but in a different way than we usually approach the podcast. From our perspective, the music was, for the most part, bad. So we're not playing any music from the weekend. You can hear it all via Phish On Demand or PhishTracks. (The Jibboo, Melt, AC/DC Bag and Reba are highlights for us.) But we wanted to share some personal memories, because it was a unique and great experience with the actual people we were with. I (RJ) had the luxury of being on vacation this summer with almost all of the friends who we were with at Coventry. One night on vacation, sitting around the table, we shared stories and recollections from that weekend. And 10 years later, we're at another peak, as is the band.  So for this episode, Brad and I chat for a little while and then we share the conversation. As usual, please review us on iTunes and send comments and feedback to helpingfriendlypodcast at gmail dot com, and follow us on Twitter. And check out CashorTrade.org for face value tickets to shows across the country.  Also the podcast is now available on Stitcher! If you're a Stitcher user, please give us a review. Look forward to the next episode, post Dicks!

This week, we decided to discuss and explore Chalk Dust Torture and its evolution over the years. Phish has of course been playing this song since 1991, and the evolution of the song has pretty closely followed the trajectory of their music—incredible precision, then a bit of exploration, then funk, then way more space and groove, then into the current era of patient but ambitious jams. Tracks are below. If you haven't yet, please take our quick survey about how we can improve the podcast. Also, review us on iTunes and follow us on Twitter. As we mentioned last week, episodes 1-20 of HF Pod are available on the Internet Archive. Please do go back and listen if you want to hear some our less.....refined offerings. Well friends, this sucks. We are sad and devastated. As we discuss in this episode, we as fans have it pretty good compared with the vendors affected at Watkins Glen, and the people of the city. Rank #6: Episode 74: Year in Review Phish 2015

Podcast cover
Read more

2015 was a hell of a year for Phish. We attempt to do it justice in Episode 74, with great group of guests joining us for this 3-part episode. Each part touches on a different theme, with Part 1 focused on the new material that was released this year (tracks below, discussion of music starts around 49:00).   Part 2 will focus on the evolution of improvisation in 2015, and Part 3 will just be some jams we think you shouldn't miss. Part 3 will just be music without discussion. We appreciate Allie, Chris, Zac and Dianna joining us for this really fun discussion.   This past year was a little different for Phish. Fewer shows, no Fall tour, Trey guest starring in Fare Thee Well shows, Magnaball, and another glorious New Year's run at Madison Square Garden. And even though we got fewer shows, we all agreed that almost every show had something special. We talk a lot about how this year fits into the band's history, and where they go from here.  If you haven't yet, please take our quick survey about how we can improve the podcast. Also, review us on iTunes and follow us on Twitter.  Part 1 Tracks Blaze On (Shoreline) No Man In No Man's Land > Twist (Mann) Mercury (Dick's) Intro Music: Akron/Family, Last Year

This week we're joined by Craig and Jen, who help us recap the recent MSG New Year's Run. There was a lot to discuss, hope you enjoy! A few links from our discussion: Here's the site that chronicles the evolution of Trey's guitar rig. Rank #9: Episode 103: Tweezer So Cold

Podcast cover
Read more

For many (most?) fans, there’s no greater gift at a Phish show than a Tweezer. Phish experiences are formed and strengthened based on single performances of this song. Shows can be saved by its appearance, soaring out of the speakers with Superman cape and all. Our friend and collaborator Matt is the brains behind this episode, and we're grateful to him for taking this on and putting this awesome resource together. Here's a link to the Tweezer So Cold data dashboard that Matt created (it's also embedded below). Also for this episode, we're collaborating with Phish.net again. Their hard work laid the foundation for all of the stuff Matt has done, and they agreed to host a blog post we put together about this episode. This episode is a mixture of us talking about Tweezer and playing LOTS of awesome Tweezer clips. Because this was such a great discussion, we only made it from the Tweezer debut in 1990 through 2000. Part 2 to tackle 2.0 and 3.0 will be coming soon.  We're eager to hear your thoughts and feedback. Please subscribe and review us on iTunes and follow us on Twitter. Also like us on Facebook. And check out CashorTrade for face value tickets to shows across the country. If you are on Stitcher, give us a review. Intro/Outro Music: Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Cold Roses

As you may have seen, we put the topic of the last HF Pod episode of 2015 up to a vote.
