Turning Dreams Into Reality.

A reader of my weekly newsletter challenged my thinking that there are new opportunities all around us. He wrote: “Just as Adam and Eve were tricked into believing they knew better, so you have been tricked into thinking that there was a better way than being content on the dairy farm.” In this episode I unpack why I’m still chasing dreams.

Episode #624 August 24, 2018

Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

Questions:

1. Is now a time to be dreaming?

2. Don’t most dreams just get us in trouble?

3. What are we likely to regret when we’re on our deathbed?

4. What are the three elements for bringing a dream to life?

5. What are the 5 steps to making that happen?

Quotation:

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die

That cannot fly.” –  Langston Hughes

What dream do you have that you’ve not acted on? What would it take to give life to that dream this week?

Resources:

Here are the steps we all go through in turning dreams into reality:

  1. Defining Our Purpose – knowing clearly what you want
  2. Imagination – how can this be done and how can I do it
  3. Desire – it has to be your own strong desire – not something you think you should do or something you think others expect you to do.
  4. Self-Discipline —  without this, you will be deterred by the first obstacle
  5. Faith – this makes all the others work.  Unless you believe it will happen, you will sabotage your progress.

Rank #5: What’s Holding You Back?

Podcast cover
Read more

The most common questions submitted have to do with perceived obstacles — what’s holding you back from moving toward one’s goals. In this episode I unpack the most frequent issues shared as barriers to success. Hint – they can all be eliminated – and your success is right on the other side.

Episode #694 December 13, 2019

Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

Questions:

I’m lacking clarity

If you say that being clear on what it is you want and should do is what’s holding you back, you’re not alone. 85% of the process of gaining clarity comes from looking inward. The key is “does it work for you.”

'I'd rather help you grow dandelions if that's your passion than talk you into being a computer programmer because we know there are opportunities out there.'Click To Tweet

Not enough Money

This is often a perceived lack of money. It’s more often a fear of failure.

26% of business start-ups don’t require any capital at all.

34% need less than $5,000

9% need between $5,000 and $10,000

That means 69% of all small businesses need less than $10,000 to get started.

Find out how one listener got the money to develop a new Enneagram game.

Ways to get money to start your business:

• Go to a bank (but you need collateral)

• Small Business Administration (stringent requirements)

• Lease equipment and office space so there’s not a lot of money required upfront.

• Supplier financing

• Franchising

• Licensing

• Distributorship

• Venture Capital (look at you as a person more than your idea)

• Love Money – people who know and trust you (but this often changes the conversation and the relationship) – 80% of new business are funded with love money

'If you have energy, ambition, desire and imagination you will attract money.'Click To Tweet

Lacking Self-Confidence

Lack of self-confidence is really fear holding you back. Sometimes fear becomes a warm blanket we wrap ourselves in and stay there.

Check out the book Flinch by Julien Smith

Here are some tips to help you move through fear:•

• Convert worry time into study time

• Plan your actions rather than waiting to see what happens

• Be decisive and stick with your plan

• Be careful listening to other people trying to hold you back. You may need to find some new friends — people who are on the same path as you to cheer you on. That’s why we created the 48 Days Eagles Community.

• Be a front seater

• Practice making eye contact with people

• Walk 25% faster

• Practice speaking up

• Smile more – David Schwartz says in The Magic of Thinking Big, “Try to feel defeated and smile at the same time. You can’t!”

Read more about the Black Crabs Dan talks about here.

Fear of loss greater than hope of gain — I don’t want to lose the security I have now   I Need “Security”

I hear this from people a lot.

If the fear of losing what you have now is holding you back, remember that security is your ability to produce. “Security knows from knowing what it is you do that provides value.”

You have to sell yourself every single day.

I just procrastinate

Procrastination is another form of fear.

If procrastination is holding you back, here are a few tips:

• Get in the habit of being a doer not a don’ter

• Don’t wait until conditions are perfect

• Remember ideas alone won’t bring you any kind of success. Ideas have value only when you create a plan of action and carry it out.

• Don’t wait until it feels right

'Amateurs wait until it feels right or until they're motivated. Professionals create a plan of action and move into new levels of high performance.'Click To Tweet

I don’t have enough time

Not having enough time is just another method of procrastination.

We have to ultimately agree that we invest our time in what we consider to be the most important.

Being busy is not a badge of honor.

I recommend a zero-based time budget.

Start with 168 hours in a week. Then decide in advance how you are going to spend or invest those hours.

Look at it on paper. When you take out the important things, you still have discretionary time.

If you put 15 hours a week into a new idea, you can really develop it. Find out more in this Masterclass.

Change your thinking to be long-term.

I’ve tried before and failed

Recognize that failure is a necessary part of success.

You have two options: Either you win or you learn.

Note: It’s important to have people around you who will cheer you on.

My biggest success is my marriage.

Treat your relationships with the same time and care you would a business idea.

If I were to have to put a dollar amount on my closest relationships, I'm a billionaire.Click To Tweet

Sometimes our challenges will break us through to our biggest successes.

“Indecision and the unwillingness to take action are often described as patience – or ‘waiting on God.’” -- Dan MillerClick To Tweet

Questions:

How do you combat technology, a listener asks?

Dan shares some comments from a consultant who wrote a book for recruiters and HR professionals and advises them about technology in the hiring process.

Listen to last week’s podcast where Dan talks about artificial intelligence and hiring.

Technology is neither good or bad by itself. It can be used either negatively or positively.

Lately, I have been feeling discouraged. I’m not sure if I should continue and hope for the best or if I should start looking for another job before I get fired.

Hope is not a strategy. You need a clear plan.

First, ask yourself if this kind of selling is a fit for you. We are all selling, we just need to find the kind of selling that is a fit for us.

Don’t wait to get fired. Go back and take a fresh look. Do another job search immediately.

Should we feel guilty about making easy money?

Heidi is feeling guilty because she’s still making money from writing she did four years ago. Somehow it just feels too easy to make money without doing any hard work. Let’s look at the unhealthy mindset behind that feeling.

Episode #660 April 19, 2019

Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

Questions:

Do you have tips for overcoming guilt that comes along with doing the work once and getting paid over and over again?

Check out the book, Thou Shall Prosper by Rabbi Daniel Lapin

Making money is not a bad thing.

Poverty is not virtuous.

Charging someone a fair price for a product or service is not something for which you should feel guilty.

As Rabbi Lapin says, “Being profitable is a measurement of how effectively you’re serving God’s children.”

What are some foundations that should be in place before making the side hustle the main hustle?

If you are using the 15-hour formula to build your side business and you’re bringing in 50% of your day job income, then you are in a perfect place to make the switch to full-time entrepreneurship. You should have no problem making the remaining 50% of your income when you put 40 hours per week into your side business.

Check out No More Dreaded Mondays for some real life examples and the proven principles of how to take an idea and grow it.

I’m 34 years old and have no home, no funds, no phone, can’t make interviews because of lack of funds.

It’s important to not pull yourself into a cycle of losing. Here are 5 tips to break the cycle of losing.

You need 5 things to come back from failure. It’s not a high IQ, another college degree or 10 more years of work experience. It’s

  • Loving relationships
  • Uncompromising integrity
  • Clear purpose

How Do You Measure Success?

A listener feels stuck. He’s making a lot of money but feels no sense of fulfillment in the work he’s doing. Guess what? With that success he’s not stuck. With the life experience he has at 45 years old, he can do a little introspection and move right into a better opportunity. Oh, and by the way, don’t assume your income will drop. Doing something that’s a better fit will set the stage for dramatic increase – even without a college degree.

Episode #665 May 22, 2019 –

Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

Questions:

What do you do when you are ridiculously passionate about so many different things?

How do you narrow down to one specific niche?

Put together 20 ideas for things you can do. Then filter those based upon your skills and abilities, personality traits and values, dreams and passions. Then choose the best one and focus on it for the next year.

Recommended Book: Real Artists Don’t Starve by Jeff Goins

Dan goes through this process in more detail in 48 Days To the Work You Love

The Venn Diagram Dan uses in his business – how he has one focus but still does many things.

A 48 Days Certified Coach can take you through the process Dan describes to narrow your focus and find your niche. Find out more.

How do I put a value on that 20 years of experience and college degree? It seems like all the avenues I find for “moving up” are with specific degrees, so I seem to be stuck on low-level, low-pay jobs.

How do you know what you worth – use online calculators like salary.com

I am a new graduate and applied for a position posted with a salary range of $24.08 – $37.61 hourly. As I move forward in the process of potentially getting hired by this company, how do I handle this part of the conversation?

In Chapter 10 of 48 Days to the Work You Love, I go through the sequence of negotiating salary:

• Wait to talk about salary once the company decides they have to have you. Many people discuss salary way too soon.

• Focus on the position being a fit for you first.

• The longer you wait, the more you are in the driver’s seat for those negotiations.

• Salaries are just ranges and they’re negotiated all the time.

I am 45 years old, and I make over $100,000 year, I’m not happy, even with that income it doesn’t take away the pain of not finding my fulfillment. I’m frustrated and depressed and don’t know where to start.

This is such a common question to be making such extraordinary income and not feeling fulfilled.

Do not assume that you’re going to have to compromise that income if you change what you’re doing now. In fact, it’s often the opposite.

You do have some kind of skill or you wouldn’t want to be compensated the way you are now. But you don’t want to just arbitrarily pick something else to do. Look inward. What is your unique ability? What puts you in your Zone of Genius?

Three things we all want: Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose (from the book Drive by Daniel Pink)

Remember, how much money you make is not the only way to measure success.  It’s about living the life you want.

Can you share the name of the online course one of your listener’s bought for $19 and built an online store that doubled his income?

That course is a couple thousand bucks at this point.

Courses Dan recommends: Jim Cockrum’s Proven Amazon Course as a starting point for an online business

Dan, what are your thoughts on starting an ice-cream truck business? We found a truck for sale costing $8,000.

Instead, sit down with your brother and come up with 20 other things you can do —  expand your idea.

Volunteer to help someone who has an ice cream truck already. Go on a Vocation Vacation to get some experience and see if it’s something you really want to pursue.

Rank #10: Why am I getting smarter but not richer?

Podcast cover
Read more

Great question. Learning more does not make you richer, but if you combine new knowledge with understanding and implementation, you can get both smarter and richer. It will change your life in many ways – including financially. We also look at how artists and coaches can increase their income. You can be good and broke if you don’t know how to build your brand and reputation.

Episode #670 – June 28, 2019 –

Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

Questions:

I’m investing 3% in my personal growth but all I’m doing is getting smarter, not richer.

I recommend you spend 15 hours per week to build a side business. But don’t spend all 15 hours on gaining new knowledge. Here’s the formula I recommend:

3 hours – reading, studying and gathering new knowledge

5 hours – developing what you’re going to sell

4 hours – working directly with clients

3 hours – marketing your efforts

Find out more about this formula for building a business with 15 hours per week here.

Dan, I heard you say You can make a living selling people what they need, but you can get rich selling people what they want.” Would you elaborate further on that idea and how you have seen that play out over the years?

A great example is a coaching client I worked with this week, who is real interest in renewable energy. We looked at an item people want like a decorative windmill for their yards and how we can add lights to it that are powered by the windmill. This is an example of moving into the arena of things people want.

Even the products and services I provide (coaching, books, seminars, online communities) are things people want because it addresses a desire they have. Can people live without purchasing anything I provide. Yes. But they want to have a better life and change their family tree.

Check out the “Underwear” Blog Post here.

Can I just sell my art without showing my name?

So much of art is connected to the artist. It’s the story behind the art. If you’re going to build a reputation, you have to be willing to stand by your art (even if that’s a blog, a book, a landscape, etc.). Don’t waste your time trying to anonymously put your art out there. Are you going to experience ridicule and criticism, yes. But you can also get rewards and affirmations.

I’m a great coach – why am I not making money?

About 30% of your success will come from coaching well. The other 70% will come from building the business and marketing it well. You may need to write a blog, do a podcast or come out with a book to develop your unique niche in coaching.

Two resources we use with every coach going through our Coaching Mastery Program:

To find out more about Coaching Mastery, where we not only help you learn the nuts and bolts of coaching, we also teach you about the business of coaching (that 70%), click here.

I’m exploring the possibility of becoming a financial coach. Could you make a living at this or would it have to be part of some other business model?

Financial coaches who make money are selling products (insurance, stocks, bonds, etc.)

The people who aren’t selling products are doing it as a ministry or service. They do not see it as a way to provide income.

There is another business model. You can provide free information and assistance via a seminar like the weatherman or a podcast with help and assistance and get sponsors/sell advertising.

Get my Venn Diagram on how I make money coaching/speaking/writing.

Making Good Decisions

Is it really God’s blessing if we buy a new car – financed for seven years? I fear we often frame our decisions as God’s will when we’re just rationalizing our own questionable decisions. We can feel good about those decisions – but let’s not ignore wisdom and common sense. The story in this episode is nothing short of alarming. PLUS a business idea you’ve probably never heard of.

Episode #693 December 06, 2019

Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real-life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

Questions:

I need help getting my product to market.

I commend you in understanding where your unique skill is and where you might need help.

Don’t try to talk yourself into doing every aspect of the business.

Just get people to do projects for you.

To raise money, you can use Kickstarter or Indiegogo.

But I’d encourage you to get a business coach or be part of a coaching program, even if just for 60 days, to help you put this together.

You can find more about 48 Days Certified Coaches here.

You can also join arms with other like-minded entrepreneurs in a group like the 48 Days Eagles Community.

I am now at an impasse as I do not know where to take my skills.

You’re way too general. You need to dig in to find what it is that you do that is specific that brings value to the table.

HELP!!! I’m at the end of my rope! I have had no problems getting interviews for jobs and the interviews seem to go great, but I’m not getting any job offers.

It’s not likely that your past employer is giving you bad reviews. Very few people even check references. If they do, it’s often after the person is hired.

There is something that you’re doing in the interview that makes people not want you on their team.

Check out 10 Etiquette Tips For Interview here.

Do some mock interviews with your friends and have them give you feedback.

I want to strike out on my own but I have this fear of not getting any business holding me back.

Plan to continue your miserable job for 90 days. In that period of time, do a house renovation on your own.

If you can flip a house in 90 days, you have the potential to make equal what you’re getting paid in your job in an entire year.

Work on things where you’re compensated by the project rather than by the hour.

How do I begin a parallel career while working a full-time job?

Use the 15 hours per week formula that I talk about, investing 15 hours per week in your parallel career.

Split it into the 4 different areas:

3 hours – reading, studying, gathering new knowledge

5 hours – creating content/product

4 hours – working with clients/customers

3 hours – marketing your efforts to build your brand and reputation

I’m afraid if I set a high goal I’ll reach it, but with a high cost to my family.

Never sacrifice family or personal development to reach a financial goal over a long period of time.

Think about hiring an administrative assistant to work with you.

What is it that you know about real estate appraising that would allow you to put together a course for homeowners on how to get their house appraised. Look for ways you can leverage your expertise in a creative way.

If you’re working more than 50 hours per week, you’ll start borrowing from the success in other areas of your life.

How Your Mindset About Work Can Make a Difference

When we say “I have to” our brains rebel – they naturally resist. Say “I get to” or “I want to” and see what happens. What statements can you reframe this week to change your mindset about work?

Episode #671 July 05, 2019

Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable. This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

Questions:

What happens to your brain when you say “I have to”?

Listen in on the discussion in the 48 Days Eagles Community about our mindset about work and how just simply changing the way we view it and the way we say it changes the way we feel about it.

Challenge: Over the next 7 days, catch yourself when you say, “I have to” and change it to “I get to” or “I want to.” See if it makes a difference in your perspective.

As an introvert, how can I improve my networking skills?

Our Monday Mentor Training this week was with Marianne Renner . She is a high SC personality style as you are. We reviewed how to grow your business in 15 hours per week. You have to have activity in all these areas or your business won’t happen.

Click here to see the breakdown of 15 hours that Dan shared.

You can create the very best product in the world, but if you don’t engage and do the marketing, it won’t go anywhere.

Marianne was very intentional about making those contacts, even though she is an introvert.

To get a checklist of the things to do to get the most out of a conference, click here.

What would you pay for lunch with someone to get their advice?

Find out how much some paid recently for lunch with Warren Buffet.

If I’m starting a business should I burn the boats so I have no other option?

Let’s look at the concept and history of the saying “burn the boats.”

There is merit in that, however I like to see people stage starting a new business. Work on your side business for 15 hours per week until it’s generating 50% of your current income. If you do that over three months consistently, then you can easily leave your regular job to fully launch your business.

Likewise, in business, I recommend you break down your business into multiple areas (see Dan’s Venn Diagram). This allows you to try new things while the other areas of your business keep going.

Of course, there are businesses that you can’t do on the side. If you do the background and research, there are times where you can and need to quit your full-time job to start your business.

This Monday’s training in the 48 Days Eagles Community is Michael Tidwell, who has started a side business and has built it up to earning double his salary. Now he is in the position to move into his business full-time. This is a beautiful model of opening up your options. Join us now to listen in.

Side Business Ideas That Have Worked

I recently mentioned this very real side business idea shared by a young podcast listener. Curiously, it prompted a lot of interest. I think people wondered if such a smelly idea could really be profitable. In this episode I share that idea and more. it’s amazing how simple ideas, when acted upon, can create that side biz income you’re been dreaming about.

Questions:

Can I lose weight through the holidays?

Being clear about your goal is the biggest factor. Mindset is way more important than diet, what you eat and how much you exercise.

You can find Alan Thomas, who is helping many lose weight, in the Eagles Community.

I feel that I am taking someone else’s oxygen and should just not try anymore.

You can start to walk out of this today. Do something physical where you can immediately feel a sense of satisfaction.

Do you think going back to school would be a safer bet providing a more stable career even though I may or may not like it?

I don’t recommend you borrow money and go back to school to pursue a career that you are not passionate about.

Money is not enough compensation for investing your time and energy. There has to be a sense of meaning, purpose and accomplishment beyond the money.

I recommend you use your cosmetology degree and use it, being creative with it to leverage something you are passionate about.

Breaking the cycle of being broke could change a lot of things in your life.

A lot of people assume that if they’re doing something “Godly” that there will never be any money available. Don’t think that. You can thrive financially while being full engaged in ministry and serving others.

Hundreds of you responded to our one question survey: “Where are you stuck?” I share some of those responses and then offer specific solutions to creating the Right Mindset, finding the Right Idea, and connecting with the Right Community.

Episode #672 July 12, 2019

Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

Questions:

How do I create the Right Mindset, find the Right Idea, and connect with the Right Community?

If you have those three things in place in your life, you are unstoppable.

I got my master’s in Library Science but have never found library work. It seems like doors are being slammed in my face.

80% of college graduates are working in something totally unrelated to their college degree 10 years after graduation.

Follow your curiosity. Curiosity leads to passion.

Immobilized by fear. I find that I am stuck when it comes to getting new clients. Isn’t everyone?

When we sell anything to anybody, there’s four steps in the process.

  1. Rapport and Trust – 40%
  2. Identifying the Need – 30%
  3. Project Knowledge and Presentation – 20%
  4. Closing the Sale – 10%

Look at how you can build rapport and trust with people if you’re looking for more clients.

I have an established presence as a coach, but I’m trying to figure out how to build an effective outbound strategy.

If you’re a coach, don’t just work with everybody. It will burn you badly to do that. People will end up resenting you. Make sure you choose to work with someone who fits your client avatar.

What about those of us who don’t have a community?

Mindset – you can change your mindset

If you don’t have an idea, you can access lists of ideas to find those that match what you know about yourself

If you don’t have a community, plug into one. That’s our goal here is to connect people in community.

I’m 54 and feel like I’m quickly approaching too old to change things.

At 54, you’re not too old to make a change! Many people at this age decide they’re going into an encore career or starting their own business.

I’m afraid to start a side business while I’m working full-time because I don’t want to take away from my family obligations.

You want to be sure you don’t borrow success from other areas of your life. That’s why I use 15 hours per week as the sweet spot for time to invest in starting a business. Or you can spend 90 days where you spend 30 hours on your business, sacrificing other areas for a short burst of time.

How can I grow my detailing business gradually?

Use the concept of economies of scale. Go to a business complex where there are more customers in one place.

I’m stuck between knowing and believing I can accomplish my goals.

This takes us back to mindset. You can’t be successful without the right mindset. You are in the driver’s seat on this one.

We become what we think about.

Acknowledging where you are — that you have a limited mindset — is half the solution.

I don’t have the money to pay for a consultant or coach

That’s a mindset issue. That’s not a reality. If you don’t invest in yourself, chances are really strong that three years from now your life is going to look very much like it does now.

I’ve never been self employed so I’m not sure how to set up taxes, licensure and legal stuff

Those things are not that complicated to get started. We have those resources readily available in the Eagles Community. We have mentors ready and waiting to help you with those kinds of things.

I don’t seem to have the backbone to break from job and go into business for myself

You can create as soft a transition as you want. We have many 48 Days Eagles who start a side business and duplicating their current income before they quit their job.

Solutions To Help You If You’re Stuck:

There’s nothing in here that can’t be overcome by changing your mindset, your idea or your community to move you forward.

I think the 48 Days Eagles Community is the best thing I’ve ever done to provide solutions to the things we’ve talked about here.

It will help you gain insights, inspiration, ideas, change your mindset and connect you to other people that will cheer you on.

I spend a lot of time in there answering questions. But the beauty of it is that our mentors and the other 48 Days Eagles are in there regularly helping as well.

I also bring in outside guests.

We just this week had someone on as our Monday Mentor who walked right through how he started a business online. He started selling one physical product online, and has grown that to double the income he has from his full-time job. He shared how he selected a product, how he stands out among competitors, and how he grows his business every day. He also shared outsources the product fulfillment, online advertising, update his website. etc. His Monday Mentor Training, in addition to all of our past trainings are available inside the Eagles Community for members to listen to later as well.

Consider this: would you be open to paying $377/year if it opened the door to making an extra $150,000 a year? That’s the power of investing in yourself.

But you have to believe you are worth the investment. Find out more about Dan’s formula for investing in yourself based on your income.

If you’re waiting to share or experiment with an idea until you have a perfect one, chances are strong that 10 years from now you’ll still be waiting. Anyone who is doing something great had a lot of bad ideas to get to where they are today.  I don’t know of any exceptions.   If you haven’t “failed” recently or had a bad idea, success will likely elude you as well. Welcome your “bad” ideas!

It is a real challenge to stay motivated – if you’ve only been chasing the money. If you have a clear sense of purpose it will drive you even if you have all the money you’ll ever need.

Episode #698 January 10, 2020

Hi this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

Questions:

How do I stay motivated and move forward when things are going well?

Focus on not how to do more, get more but instead how to be more.

Don’t just stop working because you no longer need the money.

When someone gets to retirement, there are three things that can cripple them:

  • no purpose
  • no money
  • no friends

Not having a purpose is the biggest one.

The most interesting coaching clients I work with are the ones who no longer have to work for the money. They get to design the work they do around a clear and compelling purpose.

Desirable Difficulties

Podcast cover

Conventional wisdom tells us that difficulty is something to be avoided – that it is a setback that leaves you worse off than you would be otherwise. But the reality is those difficulties often set us up for our biggest wins. David was small, with no military equipment or experience. But that “disadvantage” allowed him to outmaneuver the massively prepared Goliath. What if instead of avoiding your difficulty, you looked for how it may be opening the door to your greatest win.

How to frame your difficulties into your greatest assets.

Book resource: David and Goliath – Malcolm Gladwell

Your story can either be framed by the limitations you have or by your desirable difficulties.

My story can be framed by:

  • poverty
  • getting out of bed at 5 am to do farm chores at the age of 5
  • rigid and somber home with little laughter
  • no help financially from family for college

Were they disadvantages or desirable difficulties?

  • I had the opportunity to experience real work
  • I become an avid reader with no TV or radio in the home

Answers to Questions From Entrepreneurs

If you are truly an entrepreneur, trying to make a job work is going to be frustrating for both you and your employer. And if you’re drawn to a job because of “security” you’re shortchanging yourself. Listen in as I explain my own inability to ever have a job and answer other questions from entrepreneurs.

Episode #695 December 20, 2019

Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

Questions from Entrepreneurs:

One of the most asked questions from entrepreneurs: Which book should I read first?

You can get Dan’s reading list at https://www.48days.com/reading

48 Days To the Work You Love has the core principles of how to identify your talents, passions, and dreams and how to apply that into work that is meaningful, purposeful and profitable.

The Rudder of the Day is a very light reading.

See below for the 5 books I recommend everyone read.

I read about 60 books a year. My goal is to read a minimum of 36 a year. I used to keep a list of the books I’ve read. But I found I was reading books just to put it on my list. That doesn’t make any sense at all.

This year, I haven’t kept track of the books I’ve read at all. I also went back and went deeper into several of the books I’ve read before and have slowed down even on the new books I’m reading.

Go deep on a particular topic rather than skim it and not implementing it.

I’m having difficulty understanding how to create my own website – what should I do?

I have no idea how to create a website, and I’ve been in business for years and years using websites. If it’s a struggle for you, then it’s probably not in your Zone of Genius. Stick to the things that only you can do, then hire someone else to do the other pieces.

Look at what you’re doing and categorize them into:

  • Areas of incompetence
  • Things you can do with competence
  • Areas of excellence
  • Things only you can do – this is your Zone of Genius

Hi Dan, Do you have any recommendations for day job ideas for people who are entrepreneurial and don’t like being stuck at a desk?

If you can see yourself generating a full-time income in your business in six months, I would stay where you are. Changing jobs can slow you down big time in your own business. It doesn’t have to be your dream job.

If not, then I’d take a fresh look at the business you’re trying to build to determine if it really has real potential. You might have a business that’s a side-line hobby.

I’ve always dreamed about being a real estate investor. I’ve put together 6 real estate transactions but got worried about not having a steady paycheck, and went back to finance.

A normal job is really not going to provide you with that much security.

Real estate is an amazing vehicle to change your life, depending on how you are approaching your real estate investment.

I feel like because I am truly meant to be an Entrepreneur, it’s hard to get a good job. Maybe it’s the energy I give off… Do you find that to be true?

Yes! It would be impossible for me to hide my true entrepreneurial desires.

How to get enough money to quit your job and go full-time in your business is one of the big questions from entrepreneurs.

Remember that 69 percent of all new businesses require less than $10,000.

Get the Perfect Vision 2020 Goal-Setting Workbook to set your goals for the new year in all seven areas of your life.

Episode #692 November 29, 2019

Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

Don’t try to be successful in all areas, but choose one and your success will bleed over to the other areas.

Get the Wheel of Life that Dan talks about in the worksheets here.

Go to 48days.com for resources like Write To the Bank on how to use your writing effectively.

Look for ways you can creatively use your talents to create income.

I have poured my heart and soul into this TV ministry job, many times working 60 – 100 hours per week but I can’t continue the financial strain.

We have a gentleman who just joined us in our Coaching Mastery Program who has a similar story and is learning how to provide his services to corporations.

Breaking the cycle of being broke could change a lot of things in your life.

A lot of people assume that if they’re doing something “Godly” that there will never be any money available. Don’t think that. You can thrive financially while being full engaged in ministry and serving others.

Last spring I discovered that I could make $19/hour (Canadian) selling free horse manure in my spare time.

Already retirement age (67) divorced after 39 years to an unfaithful spouse. Not enough money to pay bills; going under financially. Can I survive?

You have a degree and work experience. Your best point of attack is to update your realtor’s license. Real Estate gives you a really big financial shovel (find out more about other big financial shovels here).

I am not a good reader and lose interest after 5 pages of continual reading –  is there something more beneficial in reading the book rather than listening to the book?

Here are the 5 books Dan recommends EVERYONE read.

There are a lot of people who are not good readers. Audio is a really strong connection.

If you want to really believe something and make it a part of your life, read it out loud.

How do I find a side hustle if I’m super busy working full-time and getting my master’s degree.

An online business may be the best opportunity for you. Is there some unique knowledge you have that lends itself to a course.

How Important Is Your College Degree?

In today’s rapidly changing work environment, we have to be very clear on what really is required to get a job or start a business. Never borrow more than your anticipated income for one year for a college degree or any academic degree. And be confident that a valuable “education” comes in many forms.

Episode #690 November 15, 2019

Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

Questions:

My daughter wants to go to Vanderbilt. Should I encourage her?

It depends on whether she needs to take out student loans (or you need to). Never borrow more than you can expect to make in one year for a college degree.

Check out this list of 20 tuition free colleges.

Remember that information is free.

All of the major companies have announced that they no longer require a college degree.

It’s more important to know what you do that has value.

How do I get around the growing popularity of AI interviews?

There are a whole lot of companies that are using video technology and artificial intelligence to screen candidates in order to pull the top candidates among thousands of applicants.

They ask questions like, “Tell me about yourself.” To answer, focus on your most recent employment and the skills you have to best meet the qualifications of the job.

They also ask things like: “What do you like to do when you’re not working? What are your weaknesses? Why did you leave your last position?”

If you’re wanting to get a job with a company that is using those methods to screen people, then there’s not really a way to get around that.

There are some creative things you can if you know what the company is, many of which I outline in 48 Days To the Work You Love.

Should I go into the military or start my own business?

If you would be good and enjoy being in the military, I’m not sure you would be good and enjoy owning your own business.

If you really have the entrepreneurial bug, I recommend you get a job with a company to learn and then decide what type of business you want to start.

You can be in full-time ministry and have your own business.

Find out more in my blog: How Can I Support Myself In Ministry?

How do you define personal development in the Wheel of Life?

You can get the Wheel of Life that she mentioned here.

  • Learning to play a musical instrument
  • Joining a mastermind
  • Reading great books
  • Join a book discussion group
  • Go to a professional conference or seminar

If you take the personality profile twice and get two different results does that mean your suited for two different careers?

The results of your profile should stay the same each time. There must have been something that impacted the results.

But remember that the DISC Personality Profile is just one small piece of the puzzle. Take other personality assessments as well.

Find out more about the Personality Profile here.

I would like to know some of your strategies to keeping focus and persevering when life gets rough or you are feeling overwhelmed/discouraged?

I watch what I allow into my mind. I protect the first two hours of the day to be sure that I input good, clean, positive information.

I did a podcast on The Ziglar Show recently with my son Kevin about changing our verbiage from “I have to” to “I get to.” Check it out here.

How do you stick to a goal when you keep getting defeated when trying to accomplish this goal?

Look at the gain, not the gap. I purposely set very high goals.

How do you come up with longtime goals when you are not sure what you are currently doing is the right fit for you?

If we were meeting three years from today, what has to happen between now and then to make you feel good about your progress?

Get the goal setting workbook to set goals for 2020 and beyond.

I find myself in a position where sometimes I think I outgrow friends in aspirations. These are perfectly good people and we get along just fine, so is it ok to let go?

Yes it is okay to let some friendships go.

Questions to ask someone who is doing what you’d like to do:

  1. What do you know now you wish you’d known when you were just starting?
  2. Did you use a detailed business plan?
  3. To what do you attribute your success?
  4. Do you have a problem you’re trying to solve now?
  5. “What’s the most important lesson you ever learned?”
  6. “What is the legacy you want to leave?”
  7. “What’s your most important habit?”
  8. What’s exciting to you right now?
  9. How would you spend $10,000 to improve your business?
  10. What is the most important characteristic in your life that has helped you succeed?
  11. Where do you see yourself in ten years?
  12. What’s a motto or quotation that you live by?
  13. What support or encouragement can I offer to help you continue your success?

How To Discern God’s Will For You

These platitudes about God’s will can sometimes leave us sitting on the side of the road feeling lost. God is not going to tell you to buy a Ford vs a Chevy. You’re gonna have to do the research to make an intelligent decision. Being in God’s will is like being on a cruise ship – you need to be on the ship but you get to choose your cabin.

I’ve got specific instructions for this listener to take action.

Episode #689 November 08, 2019

Hi this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real-life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

Questions:

Unemployment is at an all-time low…so why can’t I find a job?

You are not limited to one kind of job. Back up a little bit and take a look at the big picture — who you are and what you’re all about.

Vocation is the big picture — how do you want to be remembered?

Career is a subset of that. How you’re going to meet your goal.

Job is the smallest component and what you do daily to get a paycheck.

Changing jobs should not change your vocation.

God is not going to tell you exactly what to do.

Being in God’s will is kind of like being on a cruise ship. You may be on the right cruise ship, but you have a choice of which cabin to stay in.

I am totally confident that God is giving you the freedom and maybe even the gentle nudge to look at other options.

Take a look at your skills and abilities, your personality traits and your values, dreams, and passions.

Make a list of 20 things that would be strong possibilities, then narrow down to 4 or 5 that you think will suit you best.

Then narrow down to one to zone in on for the next 30 (or 48 days).

Feeling like a piece of trash at 53.  I know I have a lot to offer, but nobody wants it apparently.

This mindset will cripple you. It will lock you into the reality you are describing. What we say to ourselves is the most powerful message anywhere.

I just did a podcast with my son Kevin Miller on the Ziglar Podcast about replacing the statements I have to, I got to, I need to with I get to, I choose to.

That changes our approach to our day instantly.

Take a fresh look at yourself to come up with what really fits you and move into that with confidence.

Make sure you’re doing things to live life fully even where you are now. It will open doors to the life you want.

I know all the catchphrases: it takes longer than you expect, God’s got a plan, this is God’s will, stay positive.

Do you believe in all those personality tests companies give you before they continue with your interview?

Yes, I do. But those personality tests are a very tiny piece in the whole interview/hiring process. They are a very important piece.

I take every personality test that comes on because I find them fascinating.

Our preferred personality profile here at 48 Days is the DISC Profile. I use that with every person I coach before I ever see them.

See these opportunities as a learning experience for yourself.

How can I personalize a $10 product for each customer?

You can’t have a $10-15 item and personalize it for every customer. You can, however, have a selection of 10 verses for people to choose from.

A comment from last week’s podcast about the disparity of salaries of football coaches and governors.

Listen to last week’s podcast.

How can I practically shift to having an abundance mentality during a tough time?

See this as a season of your life. Focus on your goal, but don’t give up on having a life in the meantime (time with your kids and your wife, your health, etc.)

If I were you, I’d be looking for other ways to eliminate debt quicker — maybe even something you can do as a family to bring in additional income. Check out our upcoming webinar on how to use 15 hours a week to generate significant income in a 6-month period of time.

Episode #688 November 01, 2019

Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real-life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable. This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die. Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

Questions:

What jobs or business opportunities are there for me where I can make people feel good about themselves?

Being great with people opens up a world of opportunity.

You can stay in retail if you like that, perhaps looking at jewelry, cars, or other high-end products where you are rewarded for helping people make their buying decisions.

You can also expand to speaking, writing, coaching and other opportunities.

Make a list of 20 things you could do that would use your great people skills and also give you the hours and income you want.

Then narrow that list down to the top 4 or 5 based upon what you know about yourself.

Then do a little more research and choose the best one.

Do you have any recommendations for me on how to start a web design business?

Being a web designer is great, but it doesn’t distinguish you from all of the other web designers out there.

Look at how you can distinguish yourself. Don’t just be a generalist. Choose a niche.

I know getting up early (say about 5a) is extremely important to being most productive throughout each day. My problem: I’m a night owl.

Being an early bird and getting up early is not necessarily the answer for everyone. It’s more important to distinguish when you are most productive. An early bird really only gets a worm, after all.

I’m a reading and writing instructor teaching online. Is there any way to turn this into a business.

Let me tell you about Jim Hodges who reads history books. He brings stories to life in an audio format and sells them.

You could take the content you’re teaching and do a course or seminar or create an ebook.

I have been dealing with PTSD and the current line of work has gotten the best of me.

Let’s talk about post-traumatic growth and look at a different approach to this issue.

24.2 million people suffer from PTSD of some kind.

Post-traumatic growth describes the benefits many survivors experience in the process of healing from those traumatic events.

I recently had a day-long conversation with two very successful young entrepreneurs who both have come back from devastating personal experiences. We reviewed the recovery process and reviewed the things that seem to be necessary to come back from tragedy or failure. Here are 5 of those:

1. Loving relationships
2. Uncompromising integrity
3. Clear purpose
4. Vibrant health
5. Optimistic faith
It doesn’t mean it’s easy at all.

Recap: • Hug more • Clarify how you can make people happy and find work that allows you to do that. • Trust your natural rhythm for sleep – don’t force yourself to be something that you’re not. • Be a specialist, not a generalist • Choose growth when the possibility of anger or depression presents itself.

Getting Help In Your Business

You’re slamming the door on any hope of success if you DO NOT reach out for help. I really can’t imagine any business where any one person could do it all alone. If you’re an artist – chances are strong you need someone to help sell your work. If you’re a writer – you’re going to need an editor and a publisher – otherwise, you’re going to have a book that sells 100 copies.

Episode #687 October 25, 2019

Hi this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real-life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable. This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die. Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

Questions:

Am I selling out if I give up and get help?

You have placed a really low ceiling on what you’ll be able to accomplish if you do it on your own.

There are about 25 things that need to be done at 48 Days, and I do only two or three of those well. I link arms with people that are much smarter than I am. Getting help in your business is not selling out, it means you’re smart. As a member of 48 Days Eagles, getting help in your business is very easy. You can post anything in there and find others who will jump at the opportunity to help. Just recently, Jeremy put a post in the Eagles community about an opportunity he has to buy a website and creatively flip the inventory that is associated with it.

I’m hesitant to charge $120 a session for my coaching

You don’t just arbitrarily throw a price out there, you need to think about what would make sense with your audience. Who do you want to serve? How can you serve them well?

You need to be convinced that what you’re charging is worth it.

Focus on the relationships rather than the transaction.

How did that pastor move to a trainer position?

Here are a few of the companies that will be big players in this area and are looking for skilled facilitators. Training Companies that use facilitators American Management Association National Seminars Group – Padgett Thompson The Training Registry Fred Pryor Seminars SkillPath Seminars Onsite Workshops Cross Country Education

I’ve heard you talk about a “business chaplain.” Is that a real thing?

It is one of the fastest-growing areas that I’ve seen in the last few years.

People are realizing that they hire the whole person and are having to address their physical and emotional well being. It’s an example of how if you have your eyes open you’ll see new opportunities come available. There are 1500 pastors leaving their churches a month. There are things like this they can move into. Blog post on Business Chaplains

I’m a veterinarian. How can I jump out of this boat that’s making me miserable?

Draw a line in the sand and decide today what it is that you really care about and already have some knowledge about where there is already a market for those things. A blend of passion, talent and money can walk you right into the next season of your life. If you can carve out 15 hours a week to build your side business, then you can move out of your day job into your business. Find out more at 48days.com/15hours Take one idea and take the next six months to invest 15 hours a week in and if you can get to where you’re duplicating 50% of your income, then you can look at moving out of your day job.

We have lots of stories of entrepreneurs in the Eagles Community that have done just that.

  • Get help quickly and often
  • Sell your services by focusing on relationships rather than transactions
  • Explore new career opportunities like “business chaplain.”
  • Build your side business to 50% of your income in six months and you can go ahead and make the full transition.

My parents don’t support my dreams!

Podcast cover
Read more

A listener asks: should I give up my dreams to please my parents? When I put this phrase in a Google search it gave me 48,800,000 results. Apparently that’s a challenge for quite a few people. You can love your parents but don’t let them bury your dreams. Everyone will end up resentful. Go ahead and surprise them by being successful!

Episode #686 October 18, 2019

Hi this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real-life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable. This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die. Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

Questions:

How do I reboot my career? I want to transition to environmental science from personal finance.

With a Bachelor of Business Administration degree like you have, you can really go in any direction you want.

But if you’ve had your own business in personal finance, it’s going to be tough to duplicate that income with a job in environmental science.

Rather than just trying to get a job in environmental science, which may require additional education, look for the products you could sell that are on the cutting edge of environmental science.

We have a member in the 48 Days Eagles Community who is selling a high-end product — towel warmers — and makes $200,000/year net profit.

I’m working right now on the 20th Anniversary Edition of 48 Days To the Work You Love. I share the story of Josh, who was a blacksmith and is now a $100,000/year software developer. He spent seven months spending 20 hours a week studying free online courses and tutorials and never set foot into college or got a college degree. He wrote a book about how he did that and then turned it into a course.

Josh says passion, real-word skills and experience can open many unexpected doors.

Don’t see yourself as just an employee. Instead, see yourself as an independent business person.

I am 40+ trying to make a career switch from admin assistant to teaching.

Look beyond the traditional thoughts of teaching. You could teach Google executive’s kids, be a trainer for just 10 days a month for $240,000/year.
Look for the unique opportunities that fall under the category of teaching.

Should I give up on my dreams to please my parents?

When I Googled this question, I got 48 million results, so you are definitely not the only one to feel this way. Should you give up your dreams to please your parents?

The big question is who is paying the bills? If he does, then he should be able to make his own decision about how he spends his time and creates his income.

We need to allow our parents to have their opinions. Many of them were raised in a different time. They are doing the best they can with what they know.

But don’t let them snuff out your dreams. There is no winning in that.

Acknowledge their opinions and perspectives. But stay true to your dreams.

Show your ability to live on your own and support yourself financially.

Work hard, build around your dream and expand on it.

Have fun.

I’ve been unemployed since May – should I start my own business?

I’m a big believer in having your own business. But this isn’t something you do just because you can’t find a job.

You have to have the right mindset, the right idea and the right network for your business to succeed.

Make a list of 20 things you know you could do in business. Then narrow that list down based on what you know about yourself to 4 or 5 really great ideas. Do a little bit more research. Choose one and act.

Make sure the business you are looking at is a good fit for your personality.

Why shouldn’t my son get a degree in game design?

I’m not sure it requires a college degree to enter the world of game design.

Universities tend not to be industry leaders in most areas.

Listen to last week’s podcast to hear what this listener is referring to.

Giving up isn’t the same as moving on!

Podcast cover

Should I just give up?

I test lots of things for one year. If at that time it is not the success I had planned for, I typically stop spending time and money there and move on to the next opportunity. But that’s much different than giving up. All of life’s experiences are preparing us for things to come. If we give up, it implies we stop and just wallow in our misery and disappointment. I give more examples of what this looks like in this episode.

Episode #685 October 11, 2019

Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

Questions:

Any advice for a 28 year old looking to really find a long-term reliable position

The bad news is there’s no such thing as a long-term, well paying, reliable position.

The good news is you can create your own security by knowing what your unique talent and passion are.

Your security is knowing you are in the driver’s seat to provide work that matters for people who care.

How can I meet my favorite author?

You’ll find a lot of authors and successful people are very generous with their time. I have met a lot of great authors by attending events where they are speaking or attending.

Have you had a chance to meet a favorite author or musician? If so, drop me a note and tell me how you made that happen and the impact it has had on you. I’ll be sharing those in my next episode.

How do you know when it’s time to cut your losses and close a business?

This is a great question that was asked inside the 48 Days Eagles Community and got a lot of GREAT answers.

My cut off is one year. If I invest one year in a business and I don’t see some significant movement then I move on.

There are a lot of times when you can realize that you’ve learned a lot from your experience but you need to move on.

Let’s unpack the concept of “sunk cost bias.”

Moving on is a totally different mindset than giving up.

How do you find the balance between being content and not greedy?

There is a difference between living your dream and being content. As long as you have the belief that something better is coming up ahead, you can be content.

Being content is a mindset. It’s not a destination. It’s a lifelong process.

Being greedy and moving toward your dream are two entirely different concepts.

You can be content and still be working toward very big goals.

You can be making $10 an hour and be greedy.

How To Stay Optimistic, Enjoy Your Work and Your Life

Several of our questions this week lead back to how to stay optimistic. Plus a listener unpacks his own question. He has a side business that’s very profitable and now he’s bored at his regular job. No surprise there! Once you realize you can be the captain of your own ship, it’s hard to be a shipmate on someone else’s. Check out my advice.

Episode #684 October 04, 2019

Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

Questions:

My total commitment to the corporate world, to the office environment, to high heels and to Microsoft Excel has run its course.

Do you have to choose one job or industry? No you absolutely don’t.

But don’t be putting on totally different hats every day. I encourage you to do things that have a lot of overlap, where activity in one can fuel the activity of another.

And be sure to still confine it to 40 hours per week so you can still dedicate your time to other areas of your life. Find out more about my thoughts on this in my blog: Work Harder To Kill Your Marriage.

I am wondering what is your secret to staying optimistic and continuing to have a positive outlook.

There are so many things we all can do to take initiative and stay optimistic.

We have all experienced anxiety and worry in one way or another.

I want to encourage you to stay connected and stay active.

One thing I do to control stress is group my time in segments.

You can also practice relaxation techniques.

When people are anxious it’s often because they are looking at things that have already happened. Instead, look at what you’re moving to.

Take focused action, and you can control your outlook. This will help you to stay optimistic.

I lost money on an investment………how can I keep from being angry.

Focus on what it is you do control and stop obsessing on the things you can’t control.

But we need to recognize when we make an investment with the hope of a high return that we also have a higher risk of loss.

For me, part of the thrill of a business idea is not knowing if it’s going to work.

Don’t chase the snake -listen to Dan’s recent podcast on this here.

Instead, come up with a way you can make that money and replace it.

Frame your experience not as losing but as learning.

Maybe it’s not my job that I hate, maybe it’s the career path I’ve chosen. Why can’t I be happy designing and marketing for someone else? I really enjoy my side business.

You have just coached yourself right through the entire process.

You are an entrepreneur! This should be a real gentle transition for you.

I encourage you to be prepared to give your notice and be out of your current job by January 1st.

If you move the 40 hours you’re devoting to your current job to your side business, just think of what you can do with that.

Here are questions to ask yourself to find out if you’re an entrepreneur like George.

I have written a book, but have been advised to focus on graduate school right now, instead of publishing now…

Don’t ever let formal education slow you down from the life you know you could be living.

Education should go alongside your other goals and dreams.

It shouldn’t be an either/or choice. Find out more in my blog: You Always Have Another Choice

See your book as something that adds to your personal development but not necessarily your career.

Questions:

Do you have any suggestions on what I could do 348 days in advance of a move to another state?

Make sure your skills are relevant and up to date.

Review the job search process in 48 Days To the Work You Love.

Enjoy the process.

I’m creating a course. How long should an online course be?

We have a lady who went from being on welfare to creating a course on how to make sourdough bread. She’s made $173,000 on short, $12 courses.

I have never had anyone complain about a course being too short.

Amy Porterfield is the best source for the information on creating a course. Get her free starter kit here.

She says there are 5 different types of courses:

  • a workshop course addresses a specific immediate challenge (20-30 minutes in in length)
  • starter course that gives you a little more info and how to (2 hours in length)
  • spotlight course that dives into one area only (less than an hour)
  • signature course that covers a much wider curriculum (like our Online 48 Days To the Work You Love Seminar)
  • certification course that takes place over a series of weeks (like our Coaching Mastery Program)

Start with what it is you are trying to convey.

Don’t make it artificially long because you think people are going to be attracted to a longer course.

How can I leverage my knowledge about security into online and offline income?

Having specific knowledge lends itself to all the things in the Venn Diagram

You could consider:

  • writing an ebook
  • creating a course
  • developing a workshop
  • speaking at events
  • starting a membership site
  • developing a resource site with affiliate products

What was the course you took on how to build a membership group?

Stu McLaren’s Tribe Course

He also had a Facebook Community you should check out.

I am also part of Scott Whitaker’s community for membership site hosts.

Is it possible to train myself into a new career?

Choose 3-4 courses in a specific area and become an expert in that area.

One of my go-to resources in technology is Shawn Lemon. Check out what he does here.

Josh is a perfect example. He dedicated 21 hours per week to learning software development for seven months.

Terry’s 48 Days Eagles Testimony:

48 days Eagles and the podcasts of Dan Miller (every Saturday am on the treadmill) have inspired me to give up the false security of a life sucking high paying sales job to pursue my own small business entrepreneurial dreams. I’ve followed many online influencers but, I’m investing in Dan because I like his style, his values and his heart.

I’ve been a pro ice hockey player in my younger years, a very successful award winning salesman with a fortune 100 pharmaceutical company, and I’m about to give up a very healthy six figure sales job in the oilfield that I’ve had for almost ten years to pursue my God given dreams and passions of being an entrepreneur. I did it once to become a plein air oil painter, God has gifted me to be able to create and sell my landscape oil paintings of the Rocky Mountains in CO. While it fed my creative side, the uncertainty of income, time needed to create product and lengthy sales cycle really got me down. I went back to the soul crushing, life sucking sales job, it has provided well and blessed others and I feel like I needed to learn a few spiritual lessons before my time was finished there.

I work for a verbally abusive severe alcoholic that hates himself and everybody he comes in contact with, he is the “Spawn of Satan that Dan’s reader speaks about in the 48 days book, however they are a “Christian” organization and that’s where it gets tricky.

At this point, my fears of leaving the money are outweighed by my hopes for the future, and I don’t want to look back in regret that I chickened out because I was clinging to the false sense of security in my bank account. My goal is to crush those fears completely and kick them in the teeth by building a successful business of my own that generates more income than my boss, and what the whole company makes as a whole.

Dan’s podcasts have helped me keep my entrepreneurial dreams alive and overcome the fear with proven well thought out tactics.

2. What does one do, when they finally realize, after 33 years in the wrong profession and now 55 years old, that they should have chosen a totally different profession?

Let’s do the math on this. You’re 55 years old. The average lifespan of a US Male is 78 years. That means you have 23 years left. You probably have 20 years of productivity. Let’s say it took you 20 years to get the training for your new career. That means you have 18 years left to spend something doing something you really love.

We have hundreds of story about people who decide to change at 45, 50, 55 and 60 and move into something they really love.

The things I do today I’ve done since I was 52 years old.

If you’re in an industry that’s changing, instead of hanging on to the way things were a few years ago, look for new opportunities.

Listen to more on the podcast I’m too old to get a different job

3. My son is 16 and will be going off to college in a couple of years. His career aspiration is to own businesses. Do you think it is too early to get him some coaching/mentoring in this arena?

Have your son start today with a business of his own.

Find out more in Raising creative and entrepreneurial kids.

4. Hey there Dan, My friend and I are working through the 48 days book and we both are suffering from somewhat profound depression issues. We are currently working on those issues and wonder what the next step would be and how can we best utilize the material in the book?

Look at what you’re moving toward, and I think what you’re experiencing will start to dissipate.

Make sure you have an outlet for your creativity so that you can allow your life to be full and open and growing.

Can you blend purpose and passion?

A listener wants to know if it’s possible to blend purpose and passion with making money. Not only is it possible – it’s essential. Without purpose and passion you will burn out. Making money alone is not enough compensation for investing your time and energy.

Episode #681 September 13, 2019

Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

Questions:

1. Is it possible to make money and stay true to your purpose?

If there’s not a blend of passion, talent and money, people will burn out.

Find out more about how to make money in a mission-based business here.

2. They saw promise where I perceived uncertainty. They saw opportunity where I perceived deception.

Can you find 15 hours a week to start your side business?

Yes you do have the time:

If you really don’t think you have 15 hours a week in your schedule, I recommend you do a quick time tracking of a typical week. We all start with 168 hours – if you’re working 40 hours a week, spending another 10 hours commuting, sleeping 8 hours a night, 4 hours in church work, and 4 hours a day just with family, you still have 30 hours of discretionary time. If you dedicate just half of that to your business you can indeed have a thriving, prosperous business.

3. I just need to let you know that I’ve used LinkedIn about 90% of the time in my career and it has been very efficient and effective.

Listen in to what Dan recommended regarding LinkedIn last week.

4. I  still don’t get it, though. “what I love to do and do best” is writing software. That’s not unique at all.

Share the things that make you unique — that make you stand out.

College Graduates will be homeless slaves with massive debt…the story continues

Two years ago I wrote this piece that continues to get input. In this week’s episode I share current questions from college graduates who feel trapped by virtue of their college degrees. But no one is trapped. We all have so many options to take our personal talents and move into our dream position.

Episode #680 September 06, 2019

Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable. This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die. Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.

I’m not dissing getting a college degree. I have more degrees than anyone needs, but not with the idea that it was going to get me a particular job. I have those degrees for the sole purpose of learning and engaging with others.

Questions:

I’m on day 25 of the 48-day plan, I sent introductions via Linked In, but now that I’m getting ready to send my resume and cover letter to these contacts, I’m realizing I can’t send them through Linked In and their e-mail addresses aren’t available. What do you recommend as my next step?

In 48 Days To the Work You Love, I recommend your introduction be the first of three contacts. After sending your introduction letter, send the resume and cover letter and then a phone follow-up. If you have limited information on Linked In, that does make it tough. I would encourage you to make Linked In about 1% of your job search process and move on to the other more traditional ways of contacting people.

I’ve got a degree in teaching but don’t want to be a teacher

10 years after graduation, 85% of college graduates are working in something other than what they have their college degree in. So we have to realize that a college degree is not a direct route to a particular career. There are two reasons to get a college degree:

  1. To get a piece of paper that positions you to get a job in a particular area.
  2. For the personal development

Many college graduates only have #1 as their goal. If the first one is your only goal, you may be disappointed.

There’s nothing to prevent you from positioning yourself to do anything you want to do. Having the degree is not a negative in any way. It does show employers that you have the discipline to complete a degree. I would encourage you to be aggressive in pursuing the jobs you really want. Make personal contacts. Go through the job search process, identifying 30-40 organizations that you think could really use the things you bring to the table. You’re going to get takers.

From a higher education insider: I see a lot of examples of the wastefulness of attending college.

A 25% graduation is considered good. The price of education has risen dramatically. I’ve come to view getting a standard degree as a paid hurdle to get over. Though we all want a well-trained physician, a computer programmer can get everything they need with Udemy classes.

1st year of college at no cost – modernstates.org

I am a 45-year old attorney (married with four children) working for a non-profit making $48,000/year.

I owe more in student loans than I did when I graduated 11 years ago.

Should I go back to work for a toxic employer because I need the money?

Absolutely not.

The bottom line is nobody is trapped. You should be able to walk into any one of 15 other things and double your income and enjoy what you’re doing.

Is it possible to transition more of your time in selling on Amazon? How long would it take you to make up the gap if you did that? It is likely you could double your current income quickly doing that. But would there be a prestige challenge in having a law degree and selling lawn mowers online? That depends on the individual.

There is no way to justify the emotional, spiritual and physical costs of working in such a toxic environment. But the job offer should give you the confidence that there are probably 10 other companies that would like you to do the same thing. I would encourage you to do a job search for another position as an attorney.

My son has a 2 degrees, one in Communication Speech and one in Theater. He considers himself an actor and does short films in our state as a side which doesn’t pay. He has $83,000 in school debt and can’t see himself climbing out of the black hole anytime soon, if ever.

David Foster is a music producer. He says he was good but not great. Not being great forced him to look for other ways to be involved in music. So he writes and produces for other musicians that he considers better than he is. There are a lot of people who are wonderful artists, but they don’t force their art to put food on the table and pay the bills. Read Elizabeth Gilbert’s book, Big Magic. Sometimes making your passion your only source of income can ruin it.

Comments from Two years ago from frustrated college graduates:

Scott
I have a master’s degree and live in a homeless shelter. I have a blog. I’ve written five screenplays, three stage plays, and a novel. None of this is making me any money, and I’m medically limited to a desk job, and I had done some of this before I even finished my bachelor’s. The problem is a 108:1 application to job interview ratio, which is entirely the fault of others.

Bruce
Going to college is the dumbest thing one can do in the modern age. There is the internet, all that money could have been invested to start your own business or something. It’s truly sad.

Bob
I can’t get entry level harvesting work with a college degree in horticulture.
