Call-in talk show about health and natural medicine
Call-in talk show about health and natural medicine
Today we talked about what it’s good for you to eat your fruits and vegetables. You’d think it would be obvious, but a lot of Americans still aren’t that great at it. We talked about ways to prepare your vegetables, such as soups, stews, stirfries, salads. We also discussed all the nutritional benefits.
We also started the conversation about why PROTEIN is good for you. It turns out produce is so important that it took a long time to discuss! So we’ll discuss protein more next week.

This week, I talked about what it feels like to get the COVID-19 vaccine, what you experience afterward, and if it’s worth it. The short answer is YES! If the research bears out and this vaccine is safe and effective, it’s our way out of this pandemic.
We also discussed how the flu season didn’t happen. Many factors: kids not in school, everyone masking and distancing, people doing a lot less indoor gathering.
And, do you really need to do a liver cleanse? The answer is maybe. The scientific side says there’s no basis for it. The natural medicine side says of course you do, based on who you talk to. I say it depends. If you eat healthfully, get exercise, watch your sugar, carbs and processed foods, and alcohol, your liver will function a lot more efficiently!
Feb 24 2021
Today we discussed whether it’s a good idea to visit your vaccinated family if you are non-vaccinated, and the short answer is maybe. The vaccine isn’t 100% effective, you can still transmit it, anyone under 16 can’t get vaccinated at all, and transmission levels although lower are not dramatically lower. So if you visit, you still have to mask, distance, and wash. And if you’re leaving Connecticut for more than 24 hours and going anywhere that’s not New York, New Jersey, or Rhode Island, you need to fill out a DPH travel form when you return, then quarantine for 10 days or have a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of arriving in Connecticut to avoid quarantining.
We talked about how to keep your liver healthy and liver-friendly foods too!
Feb 17 2021
This week, we alerted listeners to the drug montelukast, brand name Singulair. This anti-leukotriene drug is commonly given to children and adults with allergies and asthma. The manufacturer has known for at least ten years that it can cause severe psychiatric effects in children, and yet the drug continues to be prescribed. I discussed the mechanism of action of the drug and some possibilities as to its cause. I also talked about nutritional factors that can be managed.
Since it’s Valentine’s Day this coming Sunday, I skipped over the mushy stuff and went right to chocolate! Why it’s good for you, what conditions it can help, and recipes that include it.
Feb 10 2021
I reminded people to avoid anti-inflammatories and to get rest after getting the COVID-19 vaccine for maximum effect.
Because it’s another major snow day, I talked about how to stay warm naturally in the winter, from foods to eat to what to wear to hydrotherapy!
And I talked about fatty liver, an unfortunately common malady with excess consumption of starchy and sugary foods. It can be helped by diet and exercise!
Feb 03 2021
I found that lots of people getting the COVID-19 vaccination are having some symptoms afterward, and are taking anti-inflammatories and going on with their lives. I encouraged avoiding those if possible, and getting rest to maximize the effects of the vaccine.
We had a question about sea buckthorn oil, which is great for cholesterol and skin health. We also had a question about the benefits of qi gong, a Taoist meditative movement form that is linked to the meridians.
We also talked about heart-healthy foods and exercise, and how lipoic acid can be helpful for tinnitus.
Jan 27 2021
Today as a follow up to last week’s discussion of the Mediterranean Diet, I talked about a whole bunch of healthy foods that can improve cardiovascular health. They can lower LDL, raise HDL, lower triglycerides, reduce stroke and heart attack risk, and help to lower blood pressure. Mostly, stuff with fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, and essential fats! Very obvious things, but they bear repeating.
We also talked about the difference between fish oil and krill oil. There’s some controversy; they both make sense in different ways.
Jan 20 2021
Ron and I got the COVID-19 vaccine! We talk about why we made the decision to do it, what we experienced, and some ways to help mitigate side effects.
We got a great question about the benefits of the Mediterranean diet so we talked about that! You can’t go wrong eating vegetables and fruit, a little cheese, olive oil, fish at least 2x/week, nuts, seeds and beans, and a few glasses of wine per week. Like Ron and me! It’s also a good idea not to eat too much starch and sugar.
Jan 13 2021
Today we talked about New Year’s resolutions, and also intermittent fasting. Only part of intermittent fasting is really about the temporal nature of it; the rest is common sense about how to eat and exercise. So we went through the whole thing again because it bears repeating.
We also had a few good tidbits from Dr. Alan Gaby’s store of great information. Elderberry, pomegranate, and almonds!
Jan 11 2021
Today I talked about the upcoming New Year and how we’re looking forward to 2021 being a better year than 2020. I also wished my mom a Happy Birthday since her birthday is broadcast day, December 30. I reported on side effects that people I know who have had the COVID-19 vaccine have gotten (minor to none). I also talked about graduating from my orthopedic office because my fracture is healed! Still some soreness and reduced ROM but mostly better.
Then I talked about a nice study on the metabolic effects of exercise, There is this protein, DICER, It helps to amplify the effects of ATP and AMPK in fat metabolism, and exercise causes people to produce more. I talked more about metabolic syndrome and the importance of sleep, taking breaks from eating in fat loss, and varying the intensity of exercise that you do.
Jan 04 2021
Today I talked more about the COVID-19 vaccination, the ingredients of both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. Neither of them has preservative, and no heavy metals! I’m including links for more information.

To Pfizer directly: www.pfizersafetyreporting.com; fax: 1-866-635-8337; phone 1-800-438-1985.
I also talked about heavy metal toxicity, how it happens, where certain metals are found, and certain items to help with detoxification.
Jan 04 2021
This week, there’s great excitement over the initial rollout of the COVID-19 vaccination by Pfizer. We talked about the rollout, how it works, who is likely to be in line for it, and what it may contain. More info on that next week!
I also talked about some meds and natural treatments for COVID-19 as presented by Heather Zwickey, PhD, microbiologist and infectious disease researcher. Then a bit about NrF2 and its wonderful antioxidant properties.

Happy Hanukkah! Our COVID-19 Quarantine and Helpful Supplements, Pelvic Pain
Last Thursday, Ron had an acute GI bug, from which he recovered very quickly. However, unknown bugs are COVID-19 until proven otherwise. Here’s how Ron and I handled it; it included getting tested and quarantining! I also answered a listener’s questions about supplements to help to prevent or mitigate the illness.
Happy Hanukkah! I talked a little about that.
I also did a review of pelvic pain and natural treatment, as taken from Lise Alschuler’s lecture at the NHAND conference.
Dec 14 2020
This week, I gave a short update about my fracture healing process. Then I went into bruising, why it itches, why all the pretty colors, and some help for it. I also talked about histamine sensitivity and intolerance and how to calm it down.
Dec 02 2020
Happy Almost Thanksgiving! OK, so I’m well enough to make a show and talk all about my fracture experience! I talked about the different kinds of fractures, what kind mine is and how it happened, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment, including nutrition and supplementation. I finished off with why traditional Thanksgiving foods are good for you.
Nov 30 2020
This week I talked about the CDC’s statement on how COVID-19 is spread, basically being exposed to aerosols, worse if unmasked, within 6 feet of an infected person for more than 15 minutes. Droplets are easier to avoid, and fomite spread, although possible, is not as significant. I also talked about the discussion around taking elderberry for COVID-19, and the advice is mostly favorable.
It’s 11:11! Some people feel like there is a spiritual significance to this.
The main topic today was dysfunctional uterine bleeding. I’m seeing it more in my practice, so I thought I’d discuss it more. Of course, help for it is multifactorial, and involves diet and lifestyle change, exercise, and nutrition and homeopathy.
Nov 11 2020
Whew, Election Day 2020! At this writing I don’t know who won the election and I’ll edit when I find out. I talked about election day stress, which most people are feeling regardless of your side of the aisle. What can you do about it? Well, if you are so inclined and able, you can canvass or staff phone banks. Whether or not you’re going to do that, you can also take time to engage in stress reduction techniques, such as avoiding social media, avoiding ALL media, sleeping more, and anything that makes you feel calmer.
Here’s a timely topic: the humidity in your home! What should it be and how do you adjust it? Also, this the time of year to get more REST. Here’s some ideas!
Nov 04 2020
I talked a little about having a safer Halloween. I reminded people that sadly, there is an uptick in COVID-19 cases all over the country, even in Connecticut, although it’s not as severe here as in the Midwest. I listed the 11 towns that are now considered hot spots, many in eastern CT, and one of them is WINDHAM, but not Mansfield, thankfully. The main topic was Is It Allergies or Is It COVID-19? Many people have fall allergies, and currently those are mostly dust and mold. There’s really not much pollen to be had right now, so people are sneezing from being indoors, breathing in the dust and mold that was sitting in their heating ducts and is now blowing out, mold from interaction with firewood, and dust from putting on jackets, sweaters, and sweatshirts that have been sitting since April. Wash ’em! Use a HEPA filter! I gave a lot of good suggestions.
Nov 02 2020
This week, Ron really wanted to know if he should get a flu shot, since Medicare and the media are marketing to him that he’s high risk and should absolutely get one. I discuss the pros and cons of getting one, and remind everyone that a flu shot is NOT a pass, you still have to take care of your immunity and follow COVID-19 and other hygiene and nutrition precautions! I talk about some supplements to take for possible flu prevention.
I also talked about that feeling that a lot of people have during the pandemic, ACEDIA. There was a great article posted by Jonathan Zecher. It’s a kind of spiritual ennui, a deep directionlessness and angst. GREAT.
Oct 26 2020
This week I talked about dexamethasone, the drug that may well be affecting the president’s behavior. I explained what steroid are, the different types, and how they affect the body. I also talked about potential harm of this drugs.
Today is October 12, the second Monday in October. It’s Canadian Thanksgiving! I talked about that and its origins, and about celebrating it in Canada when I was there.
I also talked about some ways to stay healthy in the autumn. Food, exercise, rest , hygiene!
