153: Easily Find What Words Your Audience Wants to Hear in Your Writing with Word It Out - Quick Copy Tip

Hellllo and welcome! Today is a quick copy tip episode for you! Quick shout out to Melina Palmer of the Brainy Business podcast. She was in San Diego from Seattle last week and I happened to be downtown for Pat Flynn’s surprise birthday party and a staycation at the Hyatt (while my husband had a conference), so we met up for coffee and nerded out on podcast, book writing, and using psychological and behavioral economics for pricing your products and services...and how to name things too! Check out her podcast if you want more about applying behavioral economics to your business! For today, I want to give you a quick copy tip (and free tool) to help you figure out what your audience actually wants so you can use it in your writing or in your naming of things...like books, podcasts, blogs, keywords to search for paid ads, SEO, and more. OKAY, SO HERE’S THAT QUICK TIP FOR YOU I learned this from Jared Warner, who is on my Wall of Fame as bestselling book success story #17! He’s a marketing guy and taught this to me for paid ads. But, it’s application is far broader reaching, so I wanted to share it with you! Word It Outhttps://worditout.com/ What this does is turn text into world clouds. Here’s how I suggest you use it step by step in addition to making cool looking word clouds you could share on social media or your website.Let’s use it for copy and knowing what our audience actually wants! Step 1: Pull up a popular book in Amazon around topics relevant to your business (whether you are writing a book, doing a podcast episode, writing a blog, or coming up with web or ad copy...doesn’t matter) Step 2: Expand the reviews of the book, select them all, and hit ‘copy’ -- now, you may want to do this twice...once for 4 and 5 star reviews, and once for 1-3 star reviews. Step 3: Head over to Word It Out and click “Create” at the top. Step 4: Paste the text into the box that says “original text” and then the green button that says “generate” Step 5: Now you have a visual representation of the words used in the reviews! You’ll need to clean it up a little. For example, the author’s name doesn’t help you. Or even “book” may be unhelpful since we got this from book reviews and they are referring to the book they read. Just click on “Word list” and you can exclude words that do not make sense. Another example here would be “Kindle” or “about.” Step 6: Click the blue “regenerate” button to see the words updated Step 7: Save this if you don’t want to lose it and look for words that are trends that you could make sure to incorporate in your writing all over the web! Once you play around with it for a bit and start thinking about it as a way to do market research, the application is unlimited for us with our brands and businesses online! 174: How Long Should My Copy, Blog, Book, or Writing Be? - Quick Copy Tip

The great copywriter Ray Edwards said at SMMW19 this past March, “There is no copy that is too long - there is only copy that is too boring.” I agree 1000%. People often ask me How long should my book be? How long should my blog article be? How long should the email be? How long should my bio be? As long as it takes to deliver value to the intended reader or audience but, the shorter you can do that, the better. "I would have written you a shorter letter if I had more time." It’s been attributed to: Mark Twain, George Bernard Shaw, Voltaire, Blaise Pascal, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Winston Churchill, and so much more.  But, it does lend evidence to the fact that writing both well and briefly is harder. Great writing and editing is the cutting away of the unnecessary. The more you do it, the better you’ll get at writing succinctly and well. It really is a practice makes perfect sort of thing. So, if you don’t feel like a strong writer right now, all hope is NOT lost. It’s not a gift one is born with. 168: Visualization and Mirror Neurons: Applying Psychology to Write Better with this Quick Copy Tip

Imagine if you could better influence people from your writing and words quickly and easily, without going back to school to get a psychology degree. Well, that’s the goal of today’s quick tip episode! Visualization and Mirror neurons are legit. 1. Visualization More and more elite athletes and their coaches are tapping into Sports Psychology and harnessing the power of visualizing success on the track, on the field, or in the ring. Imagining a positive outcome and all the scenarios that could arise help athletes perform better when the time does come to compete. Inside our brains, it feels the same to see something and imagine seeing it! 2. Mirror Neurons  In the early 1980’s researchers, while studying primates, found that neurons in the brains of macaque monkeys fired not only when they themselves reached for a banana but also when the watched another monkey reach for a banana.  Those are mirror neurons at work.  We are wired to imagine things in our mind. And we even feel what others are feeling as we observe, read about, or hear about things that happen.  We are built to feel empathy and live vicariously through the words and actions of others. Let’s Apply This to Writing a Headline, Email Subject Line, or Top Bits of a Social Media Post, Podcast, or Blog Description  A wise and clever technique with your short pieces of the important copy then is to get the reader instantly engaged by triggering these principles at work. Get them visualizing.  Get them putting themselves in the shoes of the person you want them to be...a client...a successful author...a well-liked speaker...or the person in the photo along with your advertisement.  Use words that conjure up images your target audience resonates with and will paint a picture for them. Real Headline Example 1:  In the first example below, just seeing the words “tear-jerking” and “mom” in this headline instantly make me tear up.  Eliciting emotion and writing so as to get the reader starting to visualize is darn effective.  As I read this below I imagine if my step-mom were gone and I discovered unopened messages from her. tear It makes me want to open this article and see what this guy Charles’ mom left behind for him. Real Headline Example 2:  Here in this second example, without even clicking through to see the turbines in action, I already start swaying side to side. Saying “Try not to ____” is an open invitation to do just that.  It’s like saying, “Don’t picture a pink elephant.” Psychology at work! Example 3:  Use the word imagine. This is a common technique taught in NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) so start watching out for it used on you. You may be surprised how often you see it used, now that you are aware of its effectiveness.  But try out your next short, important copy with “imagine.” Like this… For me to sell my book publishing accelerator I could start out with:  “Imagine your book is #1 in relevant categories on Amazon right now. You take screenshots and proudly share them with your friends, family, and fans. How do you feel? Proud...excited...invigorated...ready to take on the world?” For a high-end salon to sell its services: “Imagine the look on their faces. You walk into that reunion looking like a movie star on holiday. Long, thick hair, gorgeous eyelashes, perfect makeup, and soft tan. Look who’s the cool kid now.” For a business coach or consultant:  “Imagine knowing exactly what to do to grow your business without stress or overanalysis. Imagine stepping confidently forward and closing high-ticket clients on sales call like you’ve done it hundreds of times.” So, try it for yourself! Start with the word “imagine” and get people thinking like the person you can help them become!

167: Psychology of Confirmation Bias to Improve Your Writing - Quick Copy Tip

Would you like more clients or a better ROI? I mean we all would...right?...and today I am sharing one quick copy tip you need to start using today! Confirmation Bias Defined Confirmation bias is a phenomenon where we, as decision-makers, have been shown to actively seek out and assign more weight to evidence that confirms our hypothesis and ignore or undervalue evidence that could disconfirm our beliefs. Confirmation Bias Applied to Writing Because we tend to look for evidence to support what we already believe, a tactic you could employ in your writing...in emails or landing pages or blogs or long social media posts… could be to do the following: Start off with a statistic or a quote from a reputable source that supports what you will be talking about or selling Expand on your topic and give examples and case studies that are reinforced by the statistic. Conclude with a call to action that makes complete sense now that someone has(1) formed a belief and (2) be given stories and examples that reinforce that belief. Unless you are a complete narcissist or sociopath, you likely do or have had battles with the ‘ole Imposter Syndrome Monster (aka ISM)! So, see it as a validation point that you are normal and healthy, not that you are wrong, bad, or weak. But, recognizing his evil grasp is the first step to not letting him pull us down into a spiral of playing small, underachieving, and getting slowed down by negative comments or negative thoughts in our own heads. How can confirmation bias play into this? Well, remember we tend to look for and focus on evidence that reinforces what we already believe. So, if you believe that:1. Most people are good, decent, and mean well 2. You know your stuff and are truly trying to help people the best you can …if you get a troll writing a mean comment on your YouTube video, you may think… “Wow, that troll must really have some pain in his life. I feel empathy for him, but I am not going to take his negative comment personally. I’m doing my thang and helping as many as I can!” By contrast, say that you believe that:1. Most people are selfish and don’t really like you 2. You aren’t good enough to be a thought leader in your business space …if you get a troll writing a mean comment on your YouTube video, you may think… “See, this proves it. I suck. I am not good enough and everyone knows it. How stupid of me to think that people would like and accept me. Maybe I should just shut myself off...or at least, let me think about this and let it weigh me down for the next 6 months…” The exact same thing can happen to people, but depending on what beliefs you already hold about yourself and others, your interpretation and reaction will be completely different. A few stats:• TikTok has over 500 million active users, behind only Whatsapp, Facebook, Facebook Messenger, WeChat, and Instagram (according to Datareportal, 2019)• TikTok is 2nd most downloaded app in the world (as of early 2020) 2. MY EXPERIENCE WITH IT + MINI-VIRAL VIDEO I first downloaded the app, then called Musically, sometime in 2019 and posted my first video on November 1, 2019 -- it’s a video of 6-week-old Baby Evren in a Superman onesie that we had gotten for Halloween with the Wonder Woman theme song playing in the background. I played with some special effects like slow motion and adding some hears on the screen, even black and white video change up for a few seconds. I had no idea what I was doing but just wanted to play with the tools a bit and see. As I record this, that first video has 100 views. Definitely not going viral. Flash forward to January of 2020 and I started to play with the app more, but this time not only as a creator but also as a consumer. I wanted to see what was working and what caught my attention. I put in some hours while the baby napped or I was waiting for the coffee to brew and took notice of the videos I wanted to scroll and see more of. That's when I made a video on January 28th, 2020 based on a "Get to Know Me" video trend. It's only aout 12 seconds long. You put up three things on the screen that are false, slap them off, and reveal the truth. I did this with the theme of what it costs to publish your book on Amazon, revealing that it costs $0 and Amazon only makes money when you make money. This video has over 47,000 views as I publish this podcast just 3 weeks later. 3. BEST 5 TIKTOK TIPS 1. Hashtags matter but don’t bother with the #foryoupage or #fyp hashtag...everyone is using that and it doesn’t give the algorithm more info about what your video is and who will love to watch it. 2. Jump on a trend with your own take using music and ‘theme’ of video 3. Write in just a few words what video is about, add it as text on the video, and make that bit of the video with text as the ‘preview’ so people can see what the video is about just from seeing the video thumbnail as they scroll 4. People are on it to be entertained in a happy, light-hearted way -- fast. Get right to the point. Don’t introduce yourself, re-say things you already typed in the description, or share unnecessary details. People will scroll past you if you don’t hook them in the first 3 seconds. 5. Add subtitles on video or even some text context so people can follow along even if their audio is off or really low BONUS PRO TIP - Take a well-performing video on TikTok and run it as an ad on Facebook, Instagram, or other spots. I'm doing this now and it's working well so far!
