Throwback Posts – Celebrate your old posts is a plugin created for blogs and websites with posts. Let your viewers discover old content on your site.

The True Cost of a Domain Name

Between $9 – $15. End of show 🙂

But if you are starting a new website, then you could get a domain bundled with hosting.

These prices are for new .com domain names only. The pricing of other extensions such as .net, .org, .info, .blog, etc. will vary based on the domain registrar you use.

Hidden Costs of a Domain Name

  • Yearly Renewals
  • Business Email Accounts
  • WHOIS and Domain Privacy
  • Secure a domain for multiple years

Premium Domains

Domains are kind of like real estate, they go up and down in price and are worth what the buyer pays.

Expired Domains

Sometimes folks will let domain names expire and you can pick up an expired one.

These can normally be renewed at regular, new domain registration rates.

MailArchiver is a plugin that lets you automatically archive all emails sent from your site.

My Favorite Text Editors

First and foremost, I believe that developers should use the tools they find to make them most productive.

Coda 2

  • More of a visual appealing code editor
  • FTP Editor built in
  • WebKit Web Inspector to preview your site in app
  • A built in database front end and terminal
  • CSS helper and the hex colors would show a preview of the icon
  • The app feels a bit heavy
  • It’s Mac only

Sublime Text

  • Freemium you can use for free forever
  • It’s more of a total IDE (Integrated Development Environment)
  • It’s FAST
  • Lean – no toolbars or configuration dialogs
  • Works on all platforms
  • Plugins and themes to customize to make it your own
  • Great shortcuts
  • Download here

Atom

  • Free, built by GitHub, released in 2014
  • Add packages to extend the plugin, with all stored on GitHub
  • Lots of customizations (including a manual how to do it)
  • At times it feels slow; sometimes even just switching between tabs / files
  • Download here

VS Code

  • Free, cross platform, developed by Microsoft
  • It’s much faster than Atom
  • Fully customizable with themes and plugins
  • Font Ligatures
  • Uses same keyboard shortcuts as other code editors
  • Emmet built in (HTML and CSS markup)
  • Built in Git and Terminal
  • Download here

How to Troubleshoot WordPress

WordPress doesn’t always work the way we expect it to. But when it breaks, how do we know what causes the issue?

Here’s the steps:

  • Isolate the problem (with clean install)
  • Deactivate themes
  • Deactivate plugins
  • Disconnect and reconnect any API services

How to troubleshoot where code is coming from for visuals:

  • Open the page in a web browser
  • View source of that element
  • See what CSS is controlling it

How to troubleshoot where code / text / classes are coming from

  • Open the page in a web browser
  • View source of that element
  • Check the class or id of the element
  • Search the plugin or theme for that code
