ExtraTime Radio: Arturo Alvarez & Johan Kappelhof (Chicago Fire)

Podcast cover

That tackle. It’s the talk of MLS on Monday, and the guys give their takes on the Nigel de Jong challenge that forced Portland Timbers and US national team star Darlington Nagbe to leave the StubHub Center pitch in a wheelchair. Then they break down the rest of another wild MLS weekend. Philly are for real, but should their game-winner have counted? Why are last year’s powers (Red Bulls, Crew SC, ‘Caps and Sounders) reduced to also-ran status? Is the TomThom hype train finally rolling along? It’s all here.

Then, in the second segment, the Fire’s Arturo Alvarez and Johan Kappelhof sit down in studio to explain why each of them ended up in Chicago, give their thoughts on the De Jong tackle, look forward to a matchup with Didier Drogba and give Andrew a scheduling lesson. Oh, and why were Khiry Shelton and Mikey Lopez suspended by Patrick Vieira? It sounds ridiculous, but is it?

Finally, the mailbag provides the forum for some venting by a Timbers fans, and listeners give their suggestions for most underrated in MLS.

ExtraTime Radio: MLS Cup + Expansion Draft

Podcast cover

The guys are back from MLS Cup, where the Seattle Sounders became the league's 21st champion in their eighth season. The Rave Green have been waiting for this moment, one that didn’t look likely in 2016, and celebrated as such despite failing to register a shot on goal. Toronto FC, meanwhile, know it’s a missed opportunity, one that might have gone differently had Stefan Frei not reached back to paw out Jozy Altidore’s extra-time header. Calen Carr joins Andrew and David as they reflect on a beautiful MLS weekend in Ontario.    There’s no rest for the weary in MLS, with a sneaky little trade window leading into Tuesday’sExpansion Draft. The guys run the rule over the moves, led by some Atlanta United FC wheeling and dealing, then examine the unprotected lists that ATL and Minnesota United will sift through as they continue to build their rosters. There are some intriguing names, but what’s the right strategy?   In the mailbag, Ben 'The Research’ Baer eats Sounders crow for that prediction, and the guys answer some pressing questions.

MLS quarter-season awards! Plus, Curt Onalfo's big gamble in LA

After another wild MLS weekend, Andrew, David and Matt sit down to digest Minnesota's eye-opening performance against Sporting KC on national television, Atlanta's humbling loss in the Bronx to an NYCFC squad making waves and a Doop-tastic win for the Union that ended a run of 252 days without a win.

Meanwhile, Chris Wondolowski is thriving with a little freedom to roam in San Jose – and Andrew says he will own the MLS scoring title sooner rather than later – the Houston Dynamo are the most entertaining team in MLS and uber-talented Toronto FC ought to be disappointed with anything less than a double. Plus, Curt Onalfo made one of the gutsiest substitutions in MLS history ... will it pay off for the LA Galaxy boss?

Behind the scenes in ATL w/ Michael Parkhurst, Dax’s return to NYC, Manneh drama in CLB and Alexi Lalas’ Hot-Take Hotline jingle

Podcast cover
Read more

Are you watching the games or just looking at the stats? David's catchphrase is taking off! The guys are definitely talking about (and watching) the games, starting with Friday night lights in Toronto where the best player in the league – Alberth Elis, duh ;) – is hoping to put on a show against the upstart Dynamo. Yes, that'd be Sebastian Giovinco, who Atlanta United captain Michael Parkhurst gives the nod as MLS's best. Who else does Parkhurst hating matching up against? What's life like with an expansion team firing on all cylinders on and off the field? Just how cushy is that new training complex? You won't want to miss this all-encompassing interview from ATL.

There are plenty more juicy MLS storylines to talk about, too. The guys start with Dax McCarty's return to Red Bull Arena, celebrate Mauro Diaz's cameo on the training field and Portland's proposed stadium expansion, wonder what's up in Columbus as Gregg Berhalter and Kekuta Manneh go back and forth in the media and finally call the LA Times Kevin Baxter to diagnose what ails the Galaxy.

As always, the Hot-Take Hotline is chock full of gems, starting with a jingle from none other than Alexi Lalas. There are more jingles where that came from, a Joe Bendik-to-USMNT flame job, LA Galaxy gritching and some insight into Dax's return from Bill Carroll in Section 132.

Andrew, David and Matt jump in the Green Room to celebrate the Five Stripes and dig into Chris Armas' gameplan. Did New York overthink it ... again?

Then The Athletic's Paul Tenorio calls in just minutes after breaking Zack Steffen to Man City, and MLSsoccer.com's own bird dog, Sam Stejskal, explains why Tab Ramos is a prime candidate for the FC Dallas job. Plus, more on Orlando City parting ways with their GM, and the Galaxy's chase for the director of Mexico’s national teams to lead their soccer operations.

MLS Cup is just days away, and the guys are on the ground in Toronto to soak in the championship atmosphere. To help set the stage, former Seattle Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid brings his inside knowledge to the table for a championship preview you won’t want to miss. First up, which club and which city has more on the line with a first-ever MLS Cup at stake? What’s MLS Cup week like for coaches, players and fans? What did Greg Vanney and Brian Schmetzer do to get their squad rolling?

In the second segment, the guys dive into a tactical breakdown that’ll get you up to speed on what’ll go down between the lines at BMO Field. How should the Sounders deploy Nicolas Lodeiro? How can Toronto FC get the best from Sebastian Giovinco, who didn’t look like himself against Montreal? Who will come out on top between Jozy Altidore, Chad Marshall and Roman Torres in what promises to be a battle of the titans? What does Michael Bradley need to do to keep the Reds rolling?

Predictions come first up in the mailbag, with the crew split as Schmid goes with his heart. Then there’s the requisite Landon Donovan MVP discussion and a call for more young American playmakers as the guys wrap it up and prepare for Saturday.

It’s Final Push to the Playoffs time, and that means two blocks of games to occupy your Sunday afternoon plus a live show featuring some ExtraTime Radio flavor. The guys, with Doyle back in the mix, start in the Western Conference, where Seattle wasted a golden opportunity midweek, Portland are holding on for dear life, Colorado are chasing an unlikely Supporters’ Shield, Yura and RSL got a deal done and LA might be better off without Steven Gerrard.

In the Eastern Conference, Toronto vs. Montreal headline the slate of games. TFC head coach Greg Vanney joins the guys to discuss the home slide that dropped them out of the Shield race, Jozy Altidore’s hamstring, those Michael Bradley rumors and the 401 Derby. Plus, an MVP discussion, another year of D.C. proving the doubters wrong, whether the East will be red or blue and Philadelphia’s suddenly desperate playoff reality.

The mailbag begins with US national team talk. Should Julian Green be in consideration against Mexico? Is Sacha Kljestan really a starting central midfielder after so long out in the cold? Finally, Doyle’s thoughts on the rumors surrounding CONCACAF World Cup qualifying.

Ambition rewarded? What playoff final four says about MLS + Full Conference Final previews!

Podcast cover
Read more

In this episode, Andrew Wiebe, David Gass, Matt Doyle and Calen Carr focus a microscope on the four teams left standing in the Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs. First things first, what does it say that four of the most ambitious clubs (spending, facilities, expectations) in the league find themselves chasing MLS Cup? We try to answer that question.

Then the guys dig into each individual matchup. Is this actually a trap game for LAFC? Will Bob Bradley sit back or press? Should Dio start? For the Sounders, it’s time to appreciate their consistency! But will they have enough against MLS’s best-ever regular season squad and Carlos Vela in fine form?

Atlanta United fans don’t think their double gets enough respect, so Andrew gives it to them. They’re the clear favorites, but they got some questions to answer, mainly on the backline. As for Toronto FC, they won’t be scared of the Five Stripes, but they won’t have Jozy Altidore (we expect). What does that mean? How can they pull the upset?

Guess who’s back? After a few weeks to recharge their batteries over the holidays, Andrew and David sit down in the aquarium to try to wrap their heads around everything that’s happened in MLS as clubs prepare for the MLS Combine and SuperDraft. Hint: It’s an awful lot.

First up, Minnesota United FC got Batman (Miguel Ibarra) and Superman (Christian Ramirez) back together as the attack begins to take shape. San Jose, meanwhile, finally has a general manager, but you probably won’t recognize his name. Yeah, but what about Designated Players, you say? Sporting KC and Crew SC snagged one apiece and it looks like Real Salt Lake are on the brink of signing a European No. 10 as well. And that’s just the beginning, because Houston appears to be killing it, Fabian Castillo’s fate is in the balance, the Fire are making moves, Seattle are reloading and plenty more is floating around as the transfer window opens.

In the second segment, it’s all Combine, SuperDraft and Bruce Arena’s first-ever (well, this time, anyway) US national team camp. David gives his take on the crop of Generation adidas and college senior signings, and points out the possible difference makers who’ll hope to impress teams in Los Angeles. Then the guys break down the 32-player squad called in by Arena in the lead up to the first national team games of 2017. Snubs? Not many, but that’s because there are some many interesting names among the all-MLS group.

Mailbag provides a platform to congratulate Mike Magee for a brilliant career, dissect Bob Bradley’s brief EPL tenure and identify the quietest team in the player market so far this offseason.

ExtraTime Radio: Playoff Mayhem With Tyrone Mears (Seattle Sounders)

Podcast cover
Read more

Soccer doesn’t take a break for the holidays, and neither do Andrew and Dave in the wake of the first leg of the Conference Championships. With Matt off eating brisket in Texas somewhere, the guys celebrate Thanksgiving in the broom closet by breaking down the return of the 2016 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs on Tuesday night.

First up, the measurement snafu at Olympic Stadium that delayed the game for half an hour, but has David making Copa Libertadores comparisons. Let’s just say it was memorable. The delay didn’t effect the Impact, who jumped out to a 3-0 lead that had Toronto FC fans thinking déjà vu following last season’s playoff disappointment. Only it wasn’t to be, as the Reds stormed back to grab two away goals. In the late game, it was a similar tale. Colorado scored first, but Seattle quickly found their feet and ended up with a 2-1 win at home that sets up a tantalizing second leg on Sunday afternoon.

Sounders right back Tyrone Mears could make the difference in that game, and he calls in to chat with the guys about the playoff atmosphere in Seattle, the team’s up-and-down 2016 campaign, Nicolas Lodeiro’s class, Jordan Morris’ future, Roman Torres’ dance moves and an international career that took some strange turns. Then Dave and Andrew offer their takes on Bruce Arena’s new/old post with the US national team and Celtic’s rumored interest in Darlington Nagbe.

In the mailbag, it’s time to give thanks. For the soccer community, for MLS, for everything that makes the beautiful game unique in the United States and Canada.

In this episode, Andrew Wiebe, David Gass, Susannah Collins and Bobby Warshaw sit down to discuss two massive upsets in the Audi 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs. MLS Cup is set, and it’s déjà vu (again): Seattle Sounders vs. Toronto FC. Are you jacked or is it lame that we didn’t get a new matchup? What did the Sounders do to spoil LAFC’s season? More importantly, how will Bobby respond to Seattle head coach Brian Schmetzer’s national TV call out?

Former Sounder Steve Zakuani joins the show to explain the gameplan, take you behind the scenes before and after the match and describe what the next week will be like in the Emerald City. After, the crew wonders what LAFC’s long-term legacy will be without the ultimate prize? Still the best ever or just another great team? Opinions are split.

As for Atlanta United, they’ll have to settle for the double. Should we be surprised the Five Stripes didn’t show up? They’ve been up and down all year. Same for Toronto FC (for two years), so why were they the ones who got it done? Will Jozy be back in time for Cup? Does Greg Vanney get enough credit? Inter Miami or the LA Galaxy are the sexy choices, but Toronto FC are currently the club linked with the big man. That could definitely work, if they moved Jozy Altidore. What about Montreal to play the No. 9 for Thierry Henry? Honestly, it doesn't matter. We need Mario for the soccer and the #content.

Also in this pod ... Free-agent matchmaking, Re-Entry Draft targets and the five open coaching positions still up for grabs. Is Miami actually going to get Marcelo Gallardo? Which DPs will be wooed by David Beckham? How do you clean up the mess in Orlando? Why are the Fire making moves without a coach or GM? Should Chicago look to their past to find a solution? What about NYCFC and Real Salt Lake?

In the mailbag, NBA steals Leagues Cup, hypothetical Homegrowns, Concacaf "Would you rather...", the only-played-in-MLS all-time XI and what we're thankful for in North American soccer!

Bobby Warshaw responds to Brian Schmetzer after "biggest playoff upset ever" + LAFC's legacy & ATLUTD blow it

In the mailbag, listeners dance on LAFC’s grave and burn Wiebe.
