Rank #3: EPISODE 052: Leaving A-Holiness Behind: Christian Piatt

Podcast cover
Read more

Author, editor, speaker, musician and spoken word artist Christian Piatt and I sit down to diagnose how big of an asshole I am.

"Let he who admits he's an asshole cast the first stone." - JESUS

Ok, Jesus didn't say that. But he did understand that change began at the acknowledgment of the problem. If Christian's are assholes, the only hope of that changing is the admittance of our own ass-holiness.

One of the reasons that I, Zac, have renounced my Christianity is because it made me into a person that I didn't like. The more authority I was given in the church, the more of a douche I found myself becoming. The more biblical knowledge I had, the more I had to correct others that didn't have it. The deeper I understood theology, the more arrogant I became, and the more distanced I felt from my humanity and experiencing the gritty, real, and beautiful humanity of others.

Christianity lead me to see myself as set apart, special, and different from others. It put me at odds with those that were different from me, and in my own mind made them the enemy, and me the hero. These disgusting, divisive, and arrogant beliefs became a heavy burden to bare. The more caged I felt from experiencing my humanity; I just wanted to be myself and drop this disgusting, divisive burden.

We spend time in this episode discussing these things and more.

FROM CHRISTIAN PIATT

My name is Christian, and I'm an asshole. There was a time when I was pretty sure all Christians were assholes, and based on the God they kept telling me about, I was pretty sure God might be kind of an asshole too.

It seemed to me that Christianity was about getting saved so you wouldn't be a jerk anymore. But the problem was, a lot of the most obnoxious, intolerant, hateful people I knew called themselves Christians. Then I heard a sermon by my friend which started with, "I'm a Christian because I'm an asshole." She didn't try to shrug it off; she embraced it. Not proudly, but fully and honestly. She needed what she found in Jesus every day, all over again because she was an asshole. Why aren't more Christians like this?

Churches tend to feed peoples' sense of arrogance, superiority and entitlement by telling them they're right and everyone else is wrong. As if their faith was some kind of one-and-done spiritual plastic surgery. We're all screwed up at some basic level; the real problem comes when we think we're above the brokenness. And why bother, when we live in a world that venerates assholes to near sainthood status (see: Donald Trump, Jersey Shore, Charlie Sheen, The Bachelorette...need I go on?)?

I've heard tons of stories of redemption, but most of them end up bothering me more than encouraging me. Generally, it's because all of the bad stuff they talk about in their lives is always referred to in the past tense, and once they're "saved" (still not sure what that means), everything is sunshine and rainbows.

But if this was the case, and if becoming a Christian really cured us once and for all of being assholes, why do so many people in the world see us as judgmental, opportunistic, narrow-minded hypocrites?

Rank #4: EPISODE 031: Let's Get Weird - Mystical Experiences and Confessions: Seth Taylor

Podcast cover
Read more

Seth and I were both pretty nervous to release this episode. Cause we get weird and share very personal things and mystical experiences we've both had in our lives. We're either drunk, sick, fucking nuts, or completely normal. My bet is on normal, but we were enjoying Crown Royal Rye and light beers.

We chat briefly about Joel Osteen’s brand of happiness, spirit animals, seeing angels and mystic beings. Seth has some fascinating ideas of how and why we created a leader like Mark Driscoll, and why many of us hunger for ideologies and religions.

There may be wounds we are medicating. I know I have many. It takes work to find the wound. But in finding the wound, we can find the healing so that we stop using alcohol, drugs, sex, porn, religion and other things to cover and medicate ourselves away from living lives of freedom.

This episode is deep and weird, but therapeutically amazing. Seth is such an encourager, wisdom dropper. While I seem to just ramble on and on he has a knack for making sense of it all and helping me process what I am going through.

"Barriers, religion, ideologies, and fear stop us from experiencing freedom, and if we can understand that the barriers, religion, and ideologies are a creation of the fear. We can then move more quickly away from the creations of the fear. We created these things (barriers, religion, ideologies) because we needed them. Some part of us needed it. All we need to do is come to the point that we don't need these things to medicate us anymore. Then all we need is the human experience, and we find that in human experience is God experience because he is in the middle of it."- Seth Taylor and Zac Gandara, Episode 031

Rank #5: EPISODE 115: If They Can Control Your Genitals: Liam Bonnie

Podcast cover
Read more

This episode is a roller coaster ride of interesting topics.  Liam grew up Mormon. Is there a difference between love and tolerance? Can you be spiritual and religious?  Love, logic, and money are rarely mixed with equal parts, and how the most fruitful conversations begin with “We don’t know.”

Liam Bonnie is a Seattle based traveler whose interests and escapades are mostly an exercise in circles. He grew up in LA County, joined the United States Coast Guard and sailed from the North Pole to Antarctica by the time he was 19. Landed in Seattle where he learned to write and play music. An active member in the Seattle music scene for 18 years.

Like many of us, he has had a barrel of careers: Diesel Mechanic, Licensed Cosmetologist, Pipeliner, Bouncer, Sailor, Honey Hash Manufacturer, Copywriter and Pet Therapist. One of those isn’t true, but it’s not the one you think. His true love is songwriting, and he's currently headed to Nashville to further his pet therapist credentials, or maybe his songwriting?

Rank #9: EPISODE 039: More Than Sex-Positive Feminism: Maggie Young

Podcast cover
Read more

"All you can do is be somebody that you love and turn yourself into somebody that you love."- Maggie Young

Maggie has admittedly had sex with over 50 men, and she has authored a memoir about the first 23. Her Sex-Positive ideology has her free as a bird, and able to openly talk about her sex life and more. Including growing up in abuse, rape, and even a recent sexual harassment incident while driving for UBER.

Maggie Young is a military veteran, UC Berkeley graduate, and author of her gritty sex memoir, Just Another Number. Her voice is a form of investigative reporting with a memoir’s emotional authenticity. While her work covers a wide array of topics, her primary focus is rape culture, patriarchy in Millennial dating, sex, and masculinity. Her goal is to expose corruption with exploitative literature. She writes for several publications, including Thrillist, Bust, Bustle, and YourTango. Maggie’s sex-positive feminist podcast, The Harlot, is set to release this summer.

Her story littered with hypocritical Christians, brainwashed warriors, deadbeat band guys, and the spoiled, cocaine snorting trust fund offspring of California’s elite. It also entails eating disorders, drug cultures, social media, and of course, military corruption.

She's been through a lot. I admire her life tenacity and sexual freedom. I am notoriously anxious when conversating about sex and sexuality. Even with my wife, whom I've been married to for 15 years.

Growing up religious - sex, and sexuality was always shunned and never discussed. At the very least it was ignored or embarrassingly passed off. I first learned about sex from the scrambled cable channels and 4th Grade Sex-Ed.

Isn't sex and sexuality something we should all feel free to discuss? No matter what your background sex is supposed to be awesome. Right? Shouldn't it be enjoyed, and experienced and experimented within each of out desired comfort zone?

She's a fan of Dan Savage and Sex Nerd Sandra. We discuss her thoughts about the Guys We Fucked podcast.

Rank #16: I'M A LOSER: Middle America and Losing Hell: Loser Keith, John Shelby Spong & Carlton Pearson

Podcast cover
Read more

In this episode, we take our first phone call from a loser, discuss middle America, and whether losing hell is a good idea or not.

I don't know if there is a heaven or hell. I used to be certain there was, but these days I am not so sure. After reading the scriptures in context more than ten times, I don't see it speak of a heaven, but of a recreated earth, and there doesn't seem to be a hell, but more of an existence apart from God. Which for many of us reading this post, probably sounds pretty good.

I don't claim to be a theologian, but I used to. I don't claim to be well educated, but I used to think I was. I have already been labeled a heretic by my old church, received hate mail and fighting messages from pastors, all while joyfully accepted my apostate reality, but am I going to hell? I don't think I should care anymore. At least, I don't want to.

I have recently come to the conclusion that trying to live like there is a hell is of no help to the fulfillment or joy to be found in my life. It only makes me wonder who is in and who is out. So fuck it.

A fellow Loser sent me this to me after his therapy session he just finished,

"I had an insane therapy breakthrough today. We talked about the podcast and my time at Mars Hill the whole time. The two mind-blowing bullet points: 1 - Literally no one has authority over you, there are only people who try to exert power over you, and 2 - It’s perfectly acceptable to be pissed off, and I quote my therapist, 'to tell all those motherfuckers to fuck off forever.' "

One place we know the doctrine of heaven and hell works to control and manipulate is in religion. It keeps people, contained, controlled, and pliable to the institutions needs and desires. It keeps people coming to church and inviting others with them. The more and more distance my life has from "church" the freer I feel, and the more clarity I feel I have. I am free to explore, to live life on a journey of discovery, and to enjoy the journey's of others, without judgment.

Hell as an Invention of the Church

John Shelby Spong retired Episcopal bishop from Newark, N.J., interviewed by Keith Morrison on Dateline, NBC, August 12, 2006.

DATELINE NBC: To Hell and Back, Parts 1-4

After learning Greek and Hebrew to read the original manuscripts of the scripture, then famous evangelical megachurch pastor Carlton Pearson began to find discrepancies. He soon became to disbelieve in the doctrine of hell and began speaking about, what he called, "The Gospel of Inclusion." He lost everything because of it.

EPISODE 229: Underneath the Pain, I Found Myself: Jeremiah Drouillard

This is one of those episodes that could be listened to over and over again. Jeremiah grew up in the Detroit Michigan area. Born into a Christian family he thought he knew how the world worked. After his mother's tragic passing. The grief and pain began his journey of asking the questions that led him to himself. It's a beautifully told, emotional, but comedic story of healing.
