Listen. Rebecky (as she likes to be called) has some big news and she decided to reveal it on this nationally-beloved segment of the podcast.  She has some excitement and ambivalence that she works through.  As always, I am a source of wisdom for her.

Besides her amazing news, we talked about my obsessive signing-up of my children for summer camps, how to keep kids from being naked in public, and how to prepare yourself for special "grown up" time with your husband.

Buuuut then that got awkward for me so I got off that topic real quick.  I don't remember what happened after that. I blacked out from embarrassment.

Rank #11: #153: Cultivating What You're Given with Ellie Holcomb

Podcast cover
Read more

Ellie Holcomb has created a beautiful, scripture rooted, children’s musical project Sing: Creation Songs. She wanted to write songs that were directly inspired by both God’s word and His beautiful creation that is a perfect companion piece to her upcoming children’s book Who Sang The First Song?. Each song is tied to specific Scripture but is also full of rich imagery from the world around us. She wanted kids to be able to sing these songs and see evidence of what they were singing all around them.

“Anyone who knows me knows that I LOVE to sing, so I got curious about who sang the first song. What did the world sound like as God created it? I loved these questions, so I set out to write a book so that we could explore not so much how God made the world, but why He created the world and each one of us. My sincere hope is that children (and the adults reading to them) would be reminded of who and whose we are, and that as we remember how God created us and loves us, our hearts and lives would sing for the joy of being loved!”

What we chat about:
  • Ellie’s humble beginnings in music

  • how letting go and being grateful changed the trajectory of Ellie’s life

  • avoiding comparisons tending the land that God has given you

  • setting boundaries to prevent over-extending yourself

  • the freedom that can only be found in truth

  • the inspiration behind Ellie’s new music and children’s book

About 5 years ago I moved into my neighborhood. We liked that the house was near family and that it had a courtyard.  What we did NOT know was that I was about to meet some of my closest friends- my new neighbors! Throughout the years we have had countless events ranging from very meaningful to remarkably silly;we have laughed, cried and everything in between.

Whenever I share about them I get so many questions from you. How did we meet? How do we plan all the parties? What makes our friendships work? There's clearly some interest around how 5 random ladies became such good friends so I wanted to bring them on and answer all your questions.  We put our hearts into this and we hope it helps you build your own neighborhood friendships!

What we chat about:
  • How first impressions aren't always accurate; sometimes it's worth taking a risk to get to know someone
  • Embracing the beauty in our differences and seeking out people who are different than you
  • Being the one to initiate communication with a potential group or supportive community

#214: Untold Stories Don't Heal with Mary DeMuth

Podcast cover
Read more

How can I talk to my kids about sexual abuse? How do I know if what I encountered is abuse? Is my church a safe place for my kids? All of these are important questions and we talk about the hard stuff today with my guest Mary DeMuth. Her best advice for us? Speak up, and persevere anyway.

If you met Mary DeMuth today, her joy might confuse you. Who she has become in light of tragedy is a testimony of Jesus’s ability to transform a broken life. A child of three divorces, a victim of repeated sexual assault at five-years-old, with a father who died when she was ten, Mary wanted to end her life in her teens. In the tenth grade, she heard about Jesus, and she knew she wanted to chase after Him for the rest of her life. Thankfully, He chased her.

Mary is the author of forty books, including her latest: We Too: How the Church Can Respond Redemptively to the Sexual Abuse Crisis. She has spoken around the world about God’s ability to transform a life and planted a church with her family in southern France.

Her best work? Being a mom to three amazing young adults and the wife of 28 years to Patrick. She makes her home in Dallas alongside her husband, an energetic chocolate lab, and a fuzzy black cat.

WHAT WE CHAT ABOUT:
  • Mary’s history of sexual abuse and finding Christ

  • how Mary reconciles her faith in a good God who allowed her to be abused

  • how Mary’s experiences have affected her parenting

  • what lead Mary to focus on the abuse happening in the church

  • how Mary is using the stories of other survivors to help fuel her advocacy

  • the power of sharing your story

  • key factors of a safe church

  • how to recognize when you’ve been abused and how to begin to heal

  • Mary’s encouragement for survivors about the process of healing

  • confronting your abuser

  • educating your kids about sex and abuse

  • what Christians can do to help bring justice for victims
