Rank #1: FL 191 – We help Teresa with engagement and retention strategies to grow her online membership

“I got this idea, but I don’t know if it will make me money.”
Does that sound like a familiar statement?

Have you ever come up with an online business idea, but thought “Nobody would ever pay for that!”

Well, don’t dismiss your idea so quickly because the internet is an amazing thing.

The internet changes everything and you could make thousands of dollars on almost anything you could think of selling if you just take action!

Yes, you’ve heard of so many business coaches, life coaches, social media coaches, and similar types making money online… well, today we have something different, and you’re in for a treat!

In our Flip Your Life community, we have a lot of different people with different niches, but this one is one of our favorites!

Today’s guest is Teresa Perleberg.

Her online business?

How about “Shearing sheep and turning their wool into a statue!”

Okay, that may be oversimplifying it, but it just gets better!

Teresa lives on a North Dakota farm with her husband and 4 kids, 93 sheep, 50 cattle.

Her husband had worked multiple jobs to provide for their family, she wanted to help out while still being able to stay homeschooling the kids.

It turns out that her discovery of an amazing craft (that utilized her sheep wool) would be the solution to this.

She does something really awesome called needle felting.

You’ll have to listen in to hear Teresa explain what that is in detail, but we absolutely love it!

She started selling her needle felted art on Etsy in 2008, then transitioned into making needle felting kits and selling them. And because her audience had shown so much interest in taking their needle felting to the next level by learning more techniques, Teresa had started a membership business on Needle Felting.

Her online business has grown to have a stable income which was enough for her husband to quit his night shift job and have more time with the family!

Now her husband and the kids all help out on her online business, working together as a family.

That’s Flippin’ your life, y’all!

Join us as we help Teresa on her membership retention strategies, audience engagement, overcoming technical problems, and growing her membership.

Anytime we can talk about shearing sheep in a podcast is always a good day!

Rank #2: FL287 – Work From Home Jobs: How to Become a Travel Agent, and Start a Home Based Travel Business

Podcast cover
Read more
In today's episode, we're going to show you how to work from home as a virtual travel agent.
FULL TRANSCRIPT
Jocelyn Sams: Hey y'all on today's podcast we're going to show you how to work from home as a virtual travel agent.

Shane Sams: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast where life always comes before work. We're your hosts Shane and Jocelyn Sams. We're a real family that figured out how to make our entire living online. Now we help other families do the same. Are you ready to flip your life? All right. Let's get started.

Shane Sams: What's going on everybody welcome back to The Flipped Lifestyle Podcast it is great to be with you again today. Super excited for today's show. This is a continuation of our work from home job series. We're branching out a little bit and showing you, the listener other ways you can make a living besides starting a website or selling virtual courses or anything like that. There's so many ways to live that flipped lifestyle in today's economy. The internet makes so many jobs possible to work from home and do things at home that you can really make a living doing almost anything you want. Anything that you can dream of. We have a an amazing example of a work from home job today.

Jocelyn Sams: I'm really, really excited about today's episode because this person came into my world randomly I guess you would say. A couple of years ago Shane and I were thinking about going to an all inclusive resort, I really didn't know much about it. I had heard about using travel agents before but we've never really used one. Well I'll take that back, we used one for Disney but I really wanted someone who was an expert on all inclusives and knew all about what we wanted to find in our all inclusive resort.

Jocelyn Sams: I did as some people may do actually probably just nerdy people like me. I got on Facebook and I used the search feature and I typed in all inclusive travel expert. I got a lot of different people and I started looking at their pages but one stood out to me in particular. What I do is, I go on and I message people and if they get back to me in a timely manner then there's a possibility that I will work with them and there's a pretty good possibility. Well Marci got back to me right away. We have been working together ever since. This has been a couple of years ago.

Shane Sams: Today's guest is a literal work from home travel agent and is actually our personal travel agent, Marci Jennings. Marci welcome to The Flipped Lifestyle Podcast.

Marci Jennings: Thank you so much for having me.

Jocelyn Sams: We are very excited to talk to you today for a lot of different reasons. I think that our listeners are going to be really intrigued by what you do and just the types of experiences that you get to have as a part of your job. Which are really, really cool. We'll get into that just a little bit but before we do tell us a little bit about you and your background and how you got started doing this.

Marci Jennings: Awesome, yes I have a bit of an interesting story I guess but I think that's, this is how most business owners are often. First of all I'm a mom. I have two kiddos, they are 13 and nine so I love having great vacation experiences, and that has evolved over the course of time. But I actually started my career in physical therapy. I came from the medical field and loved what I did but didn't love all the paper work and all of the bureaucracy that's involved in healthcare today. Over the course of time I realized that maybe I, was maybe looking for something more flexible and just something a little bit different.

Jocelyn Sams: I want to know a little bit about this transition because I know that you're from a little bit larger area than we are. You're from the Kansas city area, right?

Marci Jennings: Yes.

Jocelyn Sams: Yeah, in our area we were teachers before we left our jobs to do this. I know that a lot of people looked at us like we were crazy.

FULL TRANSCRIPT
Jocelyn Sams: Hey, y'all on today's show, we help Janet take her Spanish education business to the next level.

Shane Sams: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast where life always comes before work. We're your hosts Shane and Jocelyn Sams. We're a real family that figured out how to make our entire living online. Now, we help other families do the same. Are you ready to Flip Your Life? All right, let's get started.

Shane Sams: What is going on everybody? Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast. It is great to be back with you again this week. Super excited to have another real member of the Flip Your Life Community, a real person out there starting, building and growing their own online business so they can change their family's future. We're here to help them take their business to the next level and let you guys listen in so that you can take your online business to the next level as well. We are really, really excited today because we have Janet Jimenez on the podcast. Janet, how are you doing?

Janet Jimenez: Good. Thanks for having me.

Shane Sams: Did I say that right? Jimenez or Jimenez? How do you say it?

Janet Jimenez: You're pretty close to it, it's Jimenez.

Shane Sams: Okay. Janet Jimenez. How do you spell that for me? Spell that out for us.

Janet Jimenez: Okay. It's got a J, J-i-m-e-n-e-z.

Shane Sams: So before I got on air, I just went straight Kentucky, uneducated redneck on Janet. I said, hey Janet, I'm going to introduce you as Janet Geminiz, and she was like, no, that is not.

Jocelyn Sams: except you're not, 'cause that's not my name.

Shane Sams: Except you're not because that's not how we pronounce that at all.

Janet Jimenez: Well, I thought for a big sports fan. You would know how to pronounce the last name there.

Jocelyn Sams: No, actually. I probably would have because I like to talk about how I did take four years of Spanish in high school. Unfortunately that was 20 years ago and I remember very little of it, which is sad, but I do remember that.

Shane Sams: Jocelyn is amazing because she can read it and understand it, but not always speak it in like, so we'll go places where there's like Spanish speaking and she'll kind of know what's going on. But she doesn't ever use it so I can't even imagine how good she would be at it if we just dropped her into a Spanish speaking country for a year. She could probably be fluent.

Janet Jimenez: Oh yeah. To just be immersed and then you'll pick it up.

Jocelyn Sams: yeah exactly. I love going places though and just trying to see if I can read things. A lot of times I can still read. It's just the Kentucky Spanish that I learned, I don't think the speaking was always very accurate.

Shane Sams: That's where we know the Geminiz not Jimenez, you know what I'm saying?

Jocelyn Sams: Well my teacher her parents were from Puerto Rico, so I mean hers was really good but just trying to learn it was kind of hard. All right, well let's jump in. I love these kind of podcasts because we've actually met you in real life, which is super cool.

Shane Sams: Janet is also a member of our all access mastermind. So we get to talk to her quite a bit over the phone.

Jocelyn Sams: And I love talking to people that we have met in real life because you just already have a rapport with them, which is really cool. So let's jump into a little bit about you, your background, and what you are doing online.

Janet Jimenez: Sure. So I am a mom of six. I have five children plus a stepson. My husband is from the Dominican Republic, so an island in the Caribbean and a Spanish speaker and I am a teacher. I have worked as a teacher for 13 years in Spanish immersion school, so that's basically elementary school in Spanish. And I have a business that sells educational resources to busy bilingual and Spanish teachers...

Success Story of the Week:
Today's success story is from Melissa.

Melissa says, "I would never talk to someone the way I talk to myself. Over the past two weeks, I've been busy with my family and many fun end of the year activities. Late at night I'd crawl into bed with heavy eyelids and a battered spirit. I tried, but I just couldn't get it all done for my website. There weren't enough hours of the day, and I got really down on myself. I found myself talk being some of the most discouraging conversations I've ever heard, and it was all in my own head. Never, not ever would I speak such defeating statements to a fellow entrepreneur. I recall hearing Shane and Jocelyn speak of this and suddenly I knew, truly knew what they had meant. I can see where a person might want to throw in the towel, but sometimes life is just that busy.

Step 1 - sometimes life is just going to get in the way

Step 2 - forgive those moments of self sabotage. Instead, i engaged in my family time festivities and thoroughly enjoyed those can't miss moments. Yay for me!

Now Step 3 - back to work."

Melissa, we are so proud of you! This mindset shift is so important for anyone who is starting a business. You can't let negative talk get in your way, and I'm so proud of you for recognizing it and changing that pattern.

We would love to help you write the success story for your online business.

Can’t Miss Moment:
One last trip to Toys R Us before they go out of business ... (I don't wanna grow up)

Today's Can't Miss Moment is a final trip to Toys R Us.

Most of you know that Toys R Us is in the process of closing all of their stores.

Shane had the opportunity to take the kids to Toys R Us one last time because who wants to miss Toys R Us closing?

The kids got to buy one final toy, and that was a good time.

Rank #5: Our Secret Weapon for Online Business Success

Podcast cover
Read more
Live events are our secret weapon!
We’ve made it this far because of the conscious effort we put into the choices we make.
Some choices have bigger impacts on your life and business than others.

Today we’ll share with you our secret weapons for online success.

This is the single choice we made that helped us grow exponentially as husband and wife, as business partners and as entrepreneurs in general.
What's our secret weapon?

Choosing to invest in ourselves and attend live events!

Attending live events has been the single biggest game changer in our online business.

There’s something about going to a live event that takes everything in your business to the next level.

Being surrounded by entrepreneurs of every level is a huge opportunity far too good to pass up.

WHY? Everyone who goes to a live event is serious about their business. No one is messing around. Everyone is there to work and make the right connections that will help transform their business in the future.

We would not be where we are today, if we had not gone to those live events early in our journey.

The revelations you get by meeting the mind (or minds) behind the content, behind the business, will blow you away!
[Tweet "Attending live events has been the single biggest difference maker in our online business." - Jocelyn"]
Now that we got your attention with the perks, here are some tips and tricks to get you LIVE event ready!
How to Choose The Right Event For You AND Get The Most Out of It:

“WHO IS LEADING THE GROUP?”

You should trust the person leading you to your next step. Make sure you do your research and learn about who is hosting the event, what they value, the purpose of the event and if they have the content you need to start or grow your online business.

“WHO IS GOING?”

Take time to consider the size of the event. A smaller event gives a more personalized experience that lets you connect with others on a deeper level.

There’s less clutter, less noise, less competition for everyone’s attention, so the opportunity to build relationships with your fellow entrepreneurs is greater. This also makes asking your questions and finding the right answers even easier.

Remember: You’re not there just for the content. Go connect, build and strengthen relationships with your fellow participants, doing so will make a huge difference to your business in the future.

“WHAT ARE YOUR PRIORITIES VS THE REWARDS?”

Invest in yourself and your business. We know how difficult it is for people to do this, but you must work on making a commitment to believe and invest in yourself and your business because the rewards are going to be bigger when you do.

Overcome challenges and remove obstacles. Being a parent makes this even more complicated since there’s going to be some guilt sinking in, “What will happen to the kids while I’m away?” But what if by attending this live event, your business takes off and in turn, it significantly makes your family’s life better, would you now be willing to invest time, effort and money?

You have to be ready to do whatever it takes to get to the next level and make that a priority.

Are you investing your time, money and energy in a way that saves, frees up and generate you MORE time, money and energy?

If the answer to the question above is “YES!” then you’re already part of the 10% who’s setting themselves up for success.

If your answer is, “No,” then there’s no better time than the present to START making the changes needed to create a truly amazing life for your family. Being resourceful is a handy skill that all entrepreneurs must possess, practice resourcefulness and go do what you said you were going to do -- DO IT NOW.
[Tweet ""Live events have 10x'd our business time and time again." - Shane"]
Bonus Tips On Overcoming Challenges & Removing Obstacles:

Try driving to the event location if flying there is too expensive for you.

Rank #7: FL 192 – How to become LUCKY

Podcast cover
Read more
New Car: Do I seriously look like I was bought with LUCK money? I was bought with their hard earned money y'all!
This week, we’re going to talk about being LUCKY and our take on the entire concept of LUCK.
You probably know this already, but we are not a huge fan of the word, “LUCK.”

“Oh! Your business took off? You’re SOOO LUCKY!!!”

“WOW! You must be so lucky to be able to buy a new car on a whim!”

(buzzer sound)

WRONG.
Luck had very little to do with what we’ve achieved in life.
To put it simply, we worked very hard to place ourselves in front of those rare opportunities.

But we didn’t get to where we are now because our first attempt worked.

People think that you need to succeed the first time you try when in reality, it will take you multiple attempts before you get enough experience to get to the next step.

It’s the same with us, guys!

We had to learn the ropes.

We had to put in the time and money.

We had to stay focused and do whatever it took to make it online, not just for our sake but for our family’s future.

It’s funny how success is often perceived to rely on luck.

Luck isn’t bad, y’all!

But using it as an excuse to justify your inaction is.

“Oh, I’m not lucky like they are, how can I possibly succeed?”

See what we mean?

So, if you’re looking around for ways on how to be lucky or how to increase your luck, you’re not going to make it far.

Think about the “Law of Attraction.”

The more you focus and take action on the things you want to happen, the more you attract opportunities and situations that will make you reach that goal.

Anyone can succeed, it’s just not everyone is willing to do what needs to be done in order to succeed.

So, tell us, how will you attract success if you’re not doing anything?

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again (and again and AGAIN)...

ACTION BREEDS SUCCESS.

Stop wasting your precious time searching for blog posts on HOW TO BE LUCKY IN LIFE!

Don’t let the concept of luck hold you back from creating the life that you want your family to have.

YOU are responsible for your success.

Not luck.

Not anyone else.

JUST YOU!

You might not know it or believe it, but you have as much potential to succeed as everyone else.

So, work towards your goal, build and foster relationships, do whatever it takes to change your life.

Be like Cortez and TAKE ACTION!

[Tweet "Put yourself in the right place, so when the time comes, you can seize the right opportunity. - Shane"]

[Tweet "You have to go out of your way to connect, build and foster genuine relationships. - Shane"]

[Tweet "More luck doesn’t mean more success, you need to take action to make that success happen. - Jocelyn"]
You Will Learn:

Why we dislike being called, "LUCKY"
How the concept of luck is holding you back
The beauty of connecting, building and nurturing good relationships

In today's episode, we help Brian figure out if his business idea will make money online.
FULL TRANSCRIPT
Jocelyn: Hey y'all, on today's podcast we help Brian figure out if his business idea will make money online.

Shane: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. We're a real family that figured out how to make our entire living online. Now we help other families do the same. Are you ready to flip your life? All right, let's get started.

Shane: What's going on everybody? Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast. It is great to be back with you again today. Super excited to talk to another member of the Flip Your Life community. You'll have to bear with us. Jocelyn and I are just getting back from a conference, and both of our voices are a little shot. We're still a little jet lagged, but that's not going to hold us back from helping today's Flip Your Life community member, Brian Kelley. Brian, we're tired, but welcome to the show.

Brian: Thank you. Thank you for having me. I appreciate it.

Shane: And Brian's on the road too. He's on the road too.

Brian: I absolutely am, yup.

Shane: He's in Chicago at a conference, so he might be a little tired too. We're going to go through this now. We're going to fight through it together. How's that?

Brian: That sounds great.

Jocelyn: We're excited to talk to you today, Brian. You are coming to our event, which is coming up very, very soon so that is super exciting. And I know that you have been taking a lot of action lately which is how you got on the show today, so congratulations for that. And we can't wait to hear a little bit more about it, but before we get there let's hear about you and your background.

Brian: All right. I work in restaurants. I've been in the restaurant industry for about 25 years, and I actually love it. I love my job. I'm married with two kids, and the issue I tend to run into is that I'm concerned about our financial future. I like what I do, but both of our kids have special needs, and it requires extra planning for the future. I don't think that there's a way for me to get my family where we ultimately need to be at retirement with just our incomes. So I'm looking to supplement it with something online.

Brian: And then the other reason that I've been pursuing it is just because I think it's a lot of fun. I've listened to your Podcast for a long time now, and I've actually been a member for a year. Everything that I learn that's new and sitting down and actually creating a website and stuff is really intriguing to me. I find it exciting, and I like it, so that's kind of why I chose this path. I'm just looking for any bit of success at this point. I think I've done a lot of the base level stuff. I'm up and rolling, and I'm just trying to get that first dollar made.

Shane: Dude, I get it, man. I sat there for months and months waiting for any amount of money to flow into my pocket. And what's crazy is we ask our guests on the show, we look for people in the forums who are taking action, filling out success stories, helping other people, and you have just had this flurry of activity. You've been taking all the courses, talking in the forums, coming to the live event in September, and all of this stuff lately. And that's kind of how we were like, "Whoa, what is this guy doing? He is doing everything. We've got to get him on the show, we've got to help him because we really want to reward action takers in the community." What caused this flurry of activity. You said you've been in the community for a year now. What's happened lately or changed or how'd you [inaudible 00:03:42] to get moving forward in your business?

Brian: It was two things. It was, one, probably first and foremost, a new idea for a website. And secondly was I just got really angry that I hadn't finished my last idea, that I hadn't succeeded with it.

Celebrating five years of online business with a trip to Jamaica!

This is a very special episode, we celebrate our FIVE YEAR anniversary of quitting our jobs to work on our online business full time.

We asked our Flip Your Life Community a question:

Imagine, Shane and Jocelyn are travelling back in time and are talking to the Shane and Jocelyn from 2013. (Stay with us...) They're standing in a room together and it's right before they quit their jobs. What would YOU want to ask the five year into the future S&J if you could be in that room?

We answer those questions on today's episode.
Question One:

"How did you ignore the endless amounts of personal/household to do's and actually get work done?"
Question Two:

"How do you just go for it and know that there’s not a steady paycheck coming anymore? It’s so much easier in some regards to keep this as a side hustle while getting guaranteed pay from a company...How did you know it was time to QUIT?"
Question Three:

"With everything being so new to you at the time.... How did you determine what goals to set along the way? Did you find that your goals were too conservative, too crazy, focused on the wrong things?"
Question Four:

"What would you do different when starting from square one to bring in $$$ quicker?"
Question Five:

"What mindset did you each need to have to make the transition in the beginning? What mindset did you need right after you quit? What did you do immediately to develop systems, processes, etc to keep money rolling in and increasing over time?"
Question Six:

"What is the way you WISH or fantasize about REALLY quitting your job? Like do you wish you could have told them how horrible they were for keeping you from your kids and that you are going to do everything in your power to make sure no one is a teacher again and say I quit and throw glitter at them as you walk out."
Question Seven:

"What has the transition from a Full Time J-O-B cost you, that you never anticipated? Examples: physical, social, emotional, family, relationships, perspective? How did you cope with those consequences, or how are you accepting that?"
Question Eight:

"You know what I’d love to hear from 2013 S&J? Where they would hope to be in 5 years and how that compares with now. I think as I set goals it’s be helpful to hear others’ reflections of what they were and weren’t able to accomplish and what they couldn’t even imagine."
Question Nine:

"What did you say YES to in the beginning, that you would say NO to now?"
Question Ten:

"What TECH would you have spent more time adopting in the beginning to grow faster? What TECH would you get rid of now that you shouldn't have used in the first place?"
Question Eleven:

"What were the unexpected outcomes that 2013 S&J didn't even think would happen? What was the biggest worry/fear in 2013 that had absolutely zero impact on anything?"
Question Twelve:

"How do you continue to make progress and smash through roadblocks in business? What tips do you have to stay CONSISTENT and keep growing step by step?"
Question Thirteen:

"Did you worry about paying for insurance vs. your employer paying for it? What about retirement and all the tax stuff your job usually takes care of for you? Is it as scary as it sounds (asking for a friend ;))"
Question Fourteen:

"How has investing in coaching helped YOU TWO get to where you are? Looking back, do you think it's necessary for success?"
Question Fifteen:

"What is the biggest challenge you overcame, before making money and gaining traction?"

Rank #10: FL Yearender Special: The 5 Steps to Making Your Dream A Reality

Podcast cover
Read more
MERRY CHRISTMAS Y’ALL!
This week, we’re focusing on getting you in shape for next year’s abundance of opportunities by getting into the right mindset.

But before we do, we’d like to let y’all know how thankful we are that you stuck around with us through 2017.

It has been a wild ride, full of adventures, surprises and lessons.

Congratulations on making it through this year, and we pray that the succeeding success stories be sweeter than the last.

You guys rock!

Now, let’s get on to business… online business.
The 5 Steps to Making Your Dream A Reality
STEP 1: Celebrate last year’s successes
Take time to be grateful for what you’ve already achieved.

Being mindfully appreciative of all your successes helps you to stay positive and focused on the target.

If you don’t celebrate your successes and are being too hard on yourself, negative things become amplified.

What should you do when you feel bogged down?

When personal victories are scarce, be happy for your loved ones’ success, celebrate with them, and bask in that positive energy.

Don't dwell on the bad stuff, learn from it and then move on.

Channeling the spirit of gratitude is a powerful thing. There is so much good in the world, believe in it, and in yourself. Make gratitude a habit and you’re already one step closer to your dream.
STEP 2: Focus on experiences
Hard set goals are good, but if you really think about it, you get that exhilaration from living in the moment.

Experiences are things that move on to your next adventures, they add wisdom to your years and teaches you to persevere in times of hardship.

Focus on what you FEEL as you’re working towards your goals -- how are you experiencing your everyday life?

The goal isn’t all there is. Money isn’t all there is. Fame isn’t all there is.

Now, be honest. What do YOU want to experience in life next year?
STEP 3: Identify your areas of strength and weakness
What do you need to learn in order to make those experiences possible?

Focus on what makes the biggest impact in your life.

Sometimes we aim at multiple targets in the hope that we’d hit a good opportunity, but this just distracts us from focusing all our efforts on hitting the best opportunity.

Analyze your mindset and skills. Your success depends on what you put your mind into and the consistency of your actions.
STEP 4: Take consistent action!
Taking action builds your momentum to get to the next level.

You can form this habit by committing yourself to the cause.

There is no magic pill, success requires hard work, commitment and passion.

When you take consistent action it allows you to learn more, experience more and consequently DO even more.

What are three things you can do to make your life and others people’s lives better?

List and commit to three actions.

BONUS: The conditioning of your mind becomes rewired when you take action, you are more alert and can make use of previous action’s data to help you decide an even more educated next step.
STEP 5: Focus on others: Paying it forward and giving back
How are you going to help others?

Amazing opportunities happen to genuinely helpful people.

Giving is an awesome paradox. When you give, you receive. This is true, and for the most part, what we receive is something intangible like friendship and hope. These intangible treasures are a great source of fulfillment, and allows both the giver and the receiver to grow a mindset of abundance and gratitude.

“And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.”

2 Corinthians 9:8

In today's episode, we help Laura get new members and also retain current members in her education business.

FULL TRANSCRIPT

Jocelyn: Hey, y'all. In today's podcast, we help Laura take her online education business to the next level.

Shane: Welcome to the Flip Lifestyle Podcast, where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sam. We're a real family that figured out how to make our entire living online, and now, we help other families do the same. Are you ready to flip your life? All right, let's get started.

Shane: What's going on everybody, welcome back to the Flip Lifestyle Podcast, it is great to be back with you again. Today, super excited to be with another member of the Flip Your Life community. This is a great episode, because this is a success story episode. This is a story with someone who has flipped their life. We're talking to Flip Your Life member Laura Keybart today. Hey, Laura, welcome to the program.

Laura: Hey, thanks for having me, today.

Jocelyn: Yes, we are so excited to talk to you, especially with this awesome success story. We look for cool success stories to find people to be on the podcast. This one was one we did not want to miss, for sure. So before we jump into all that, we want to know a little bit about you, your family, and what you're doing online.

Laura: Okay, sure. So I have a wonderful, supportive husband who has been behind me every step of the way that I've been going through this journey. I'm a step mom, I love dogs, I'm a distance runner, always running marathons, training for something. I've always got something on the calendar. We love traveling, we love planning vacations and different experiences around running events like those. So while I run while he watches football or visits a history museum.

Shane: Me and your husband would get along, dude. Like, if he's watching football, I just went to Philadelphia, and I hit like five history museums. He should have went with me, I'm just saying. He should have went with me.

Laura: Yeah, yeah. Well, when I ran the Washington DC, the Marine Corp marathon, he was hitting the museums and visiting those places. So yeah, it works out.

Jocelyn: Cool, cool.

Laura: So I just completed my 18th year in education as a teacher. I taught english/language arts, which is reading and writing for, oh gosh, 15, 16 years, grade 6th through 12. The past couple of years, I was an instructional coach working with teachers at a local school district. Most of that was great, I love teaching and working with kids and teachers. But, it's kind of the same thing that we all experience. We become fed up with terrible bosses, all the crazy workplace drama, mind numbing, ridiculous meetings and committees that go nowhere, and you start just kind of looking around.

Laura: What else could I do? I went through that. Is there something remote I could do? Something online I could do? Maybe I could teach myself how to code and build websites? Which, that was a joke, I tried that for a month. That's not me. But what could I do so that I have a purpose, I can serve people, but I can also bring in an income that I can live on? What options are there? So I started listening to podcasts around setting goals, and working remotely, maybe even working for yourself. I would listen to all of these podcasts while I was doing my long training runs. That's about the time I stumbled upon your podcast, it was maybe around episode, I don't know, 40 or 50 or so, starting binge listening. I thought, okay, that makes sense. This whole thing makes sense now. I think maybe I could do that. Maybe one day, I can quit my job. That sounds crazy, but so was running 22.6 miles. That's ridiculous too.

Shane: That is totally ridiculous. That is way more ridiculous than quitting your job, I'm telling you.

Laura: So anyway, so that day has finally come. My husband had been on me for months to just do it, just quit, we'll be fine.

Rank #12: 4th Quit-iversary Special: How we flipped our lives & how you CAN too!

Podcast cover
Read more
5 years ago, we were both working as school teachers, barely getting by and living on someone else's schedule.
We were time-pressed parents with no control over our lives.

Our greatest journey started with a thought, "We want total control of our lives."

That thought led to questions like, "How can we achieve that?" which led us to take action, and THOSE actions later led to our success.
It started with creating and selling lesson plans online, which now has evolved to an even bigger calling.
It’s been 4 years since we left our nine-to-five jobs.

We’re full-time online entrepreneurs serving our online community, all while having the freedom to spend more time with our kids and each other.

Our lives have changed for the better because:

We figured out our WHY.
We opened our minds to the possibilities.
We took action AND because we did whatever it took to flip our life.

So, to commemorate our 4th quit-iversary, here are 3 of the most important lessons we learned that enabled us to quit our jobs:

If kids can do it, you can too!
Mindset Shift #1: Real people can do this!
Yes, this means YOU! :-)

You might think that you’re not enough, or that you don't have what it takes, that you need a PHD to come up with a brilliant idea or need decades of experience to succeed online… THAT IS NOT TRUE.

There were other people like us online and they made it work, so why can’t we?

I was a 0-10 head coach at one time, and built an online business that sold football playbooks.

Jocelyn was a librarian for just 3 years when she sold lesson plans on her website.

Don’t let the world dictate what you can and cannot do.

Folks working nine-to-five jobs can make money online. Parents can make money online. Retired, empty-nesters can make money online.

We believed and took action, that is why we made it.

You are more than capable to succeed too!

Shane's plan VS Jocelyn's plan
Mindset Shift #2: Making money is easier than you think
When you’re working for someone else, hard work doesn’t always guarantee your family’s financial security.

When you trade in your time for that paycheck, that is time away from your spouse, your kids, and things you’re really passionate about.

Which brings us to mindset shift #2, making money is easier than you think!

There is ALWAYS a way to make money online.

Because:

Solving problems = Money

Bigger problems solved = More money

The only one stopping you from making money online is, well, YOU.

#YouCanDoIt

write. it. down. then. get. it. done.
Mindset Shift #3: We all HAVE the time
60 seconds in a minute. 60 minutes in an hour. 24 hours in a day. 168 hours a week!

We all have the same set of time and it’s really up to us HOW we spend it.

Prioritize what’s important.

What are your non-negotiables? To make it online, you have to be ready to make sacrifices. That means, cutting down on watching TV and even saying no to night out with friends.

The time you invest on building your online business today, can spell your success in the future, so you need to decide what stays and what needs to change.

Take control of your time, don’t let it control you.
We hope you had as much fun learning with us as we have while recording this episode for y'all :-)
Don’t forget to watch out for the Flipped Lifestyle’s “Our Story” Series, see you next week!

Chilling in the lounge, waiting for our flight. Had an amazing week, but ready to be back in the bluegrass!
Hey Y’all, welcome to another Flipped Lifestyle Podcast Q&A w/ S&J!

In the Flip Your Life Community, we hold a members-only Q&A twice a month where we answer online business questions of our members live on air!

This podcast episode features some of the highlights of these recent live member Q&As to give you a glimpse of how we help the members of our community, and help you as well in online business by listening in.
Today’s Q&A highlights answer the following questions:
Question One:

"If someone loves people empowerment, what are the possibilities online? Can you be a life and/or business coach without certification? If yes, how is the best way to do this building an online business from scratch?"
Question Two:

"First, what is the best month to run a membership drive to teachers now that school has started? Second, my new membership area launched a few months ago. I have one customer that is downloading everything possible. I sent her an email thanking her for joining and asked if we could talk to get feedback on how we could better serve her. She agreed. Is there anything particular I should ask to keep her instead of having a monthly subscriber quit after she gets it all?"
Question Three:

"I'm having trouble defining my avatars' "problem". Their "pain" is really more of an aspiration. My business, Undersea Naturalist, is focused on helping my avatars' learn about and appreciate marine life. They would have been folks who were fans of Jacques Cousteau's TV shows."
Question Four:

"We are planning on launching our membership. Right now we are adding content month by month, would it be strange to have a yearly purchase option or should we stick to a monthly purchase option?"

In today's episode, we talk to a high school senior who launched his own business and made money online.
FULL TRANSCRIPT
Jocelyn Sams: Hey, y'all. On today's podcast we talk to a high school senior who launched his own business and made money online.
Shane Sams: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. We're a real family that figured out how to make our entire living online. And now, we help other families do the same. Are you ready to flip your life? Alright, let's get started.

Shane Sams: What's going on everybody? Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast. It's great to be back with you again. Today, super excited to have another guest on the Flipped Lifestyle podcast and help them taking their online business to the next level but this is a special episode. Normally we have our Flip Your Life community members on the show. We help them with a consulting call. We answer their questions and we take their business and take their life to the next level. And usually the person that's on the show comes from our success forum. We really single out and focus on our action takers inside of the Flip Your Life community. We see those success stories happening in the community and when they happen, we invite them on the show so we can magnify, multiply everything that they're doing in their online business.

Shane Sams: Well this is a special success story because this is my own flesh and blood. Our guests today are actually my nephews Dustyn and Devyn Sams. Dustyn, Devyn, welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast.

Dustyn Sams: Hey guys. Thanks for having us.

Devyn Sams: Hey guys.

Shane Sams: Now, I know you think they might be plants, which they kind of are, but they have had some recent success because about a year ago I started badgering these guys to start an online business. Do something online because they're both action takers, they're both entrepreneurial kids, and I just knew that they had talent and they could do something out there and make some money online. But they resisted and they wouldn't do it. Then finally we got them to take action and some amazing things have happened in their online business.

Jocelyn Sams: I actually have a fun fact for you guys. The very first time that I ever visited Shane's family here in southeast Kentucky, it was for Dustyn's first birthday.

Shane Sams: All right. So wait, Dustyn, how old are you right now?

Dustyn Sams: I'm 21.

Shane Sams: All right. And what grade are you ... You're in college right?

Dustyn Sams: Yeah. I'm a junior in college in right now.

Shane Sams: All right. And Devyn-

Jocelyn Sams: Was not even alive.

Shane Sams: Devyn was not alive when Jocelyn started coming around here y'all. But Devyn, how old are you right now and what grade are you in, in high school?

Devyn Sams: Currently I just turned 19 years old and I'm a senior in high school.

Shane Sams: All right. So, guys, you know where this is going today. A senior in high school started an online business, got his brother in college to help him and they've made money online. So I'm not sure what you're waiting for. But we're going to talk more about that.

Shane Sams: First, tell everybody guys, about your online business itself. What you've actually created online before we talk about sales and stuff like that.

Devyn Sams: We created a guitar beginners video course that teaches people who are struggling to learn how to play the guitar or just people in general who want to learn how to play the guitar. It actually teaches them in-depth through a five step process how to play the guitar.

Shane Sams: And what's your domain name?

Devyn Sams: Our domain name is conqueringguitar.com.

Jocelyn Sams: Tell everybody a little bit about why you started this particular business. What does this mean to you? What is your background as far as playing the guitar?

FULL TRANSCRIPT
Jocelyn Sams: Hey, y'all. On today's podcast, we catch up with former guest Daniel Hulsman after his membership launch.

Shane Sams: Welcome to the Flip Lifestyle Podcast, where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. We're a real family that figured out how to make our entire living online. Now, we help other families do the same. You ready to flip your life? All right, let's get started.

Shane Sams: What's going on, everybody? Welcome back to the Flip Lifestyle Podcast. It is great to be back with you again this week. I am really pumped up today because we are welcoming back a former guest, who was previously on the show. He's now launched his membership, launched his business, actually has customers, and this is even a more special former guest, because he is our favorite former troll. It's our good buddy, Daniel Hulsman. Daniel, welcome back to the show, man.

Daniel Hulsman: Hey, Shane and Jocelyn. Thank you for having me.

Jocelyn Sams: Yes, absolutely. We are happy to have you.

Jocelyn Sams: ... here, again, today. We have some exciting stuff to talk about, some, kinda, hard stuff to talk about. We just got a really good conversation brewing, today. So we're really excited about this. We've been following along with you after your membership launch. You've had a few ups and downs, I would say.

Daniel Hulsman: Yeah. Just a few.

Shane Sams: Now, let me get everybody caught back up 'cause I think this is airing somewhere around December, January. I'm not exactly sure. So, Daniel was on the show back in July of 2018. It was episode 212. Right, Jocelyn?

Jocelyn Sams: Yep, flippedlifestyle.com/podcast212.

Shane Sams: So the interesting story behind Daniel even appearing on the show is Daniel didn't come to the Flipped Lifestyle community or podcast in, what I would call, the normal way. Daniel actually sent me some scathing hate mail at one point.

Daniel Hulsman: Oh. It wasn't that.

Jocelyn Sams: Okay.

Shane Sams: It gets worse every time I tell the story, though. You know how it goes.

Jocelyn Sams: In his defense, it's not the worse thing we've ever gotten.

Shane Sams: It's not the worse thing we've ever gotten.

Daniel Hulsman: It was definitely saucy.

Shane Sams: It was saucy? It was quite the criticism. Okay?

Daniel Hulsman: Yeah.

Shane Sams: As I'm known to do, I like to engage with people online whether it's via email or fan mail or not-so-fan mail. Right? I actually got into a great discussion with Daniel and, kind of, challenged him to come in and actually look at our community, check us out, see how everything's going. Anyway, long story short, I've even invited him on the podcast. I said, "I'll tell you what. Come on the podcast. We'll talk about it," and we did. Right? Daniel's been a member, now, for a while, in the Flip Your Life community and just an awesome guy, just a great heart, and I am so glad that we became friends and that we got to be doing this online business stuff together.

Shane Sams: So, long story short, we talked to you about your business and all that good stuff. Tell everybody a little bit, real quick, about your business, the nutshell version and, kind of, what's happened since you've joined the Flip Your Life community since that podcast. Tell them just a little bit about your business and where it ended up at, at this point, today.

Daniel Hulsman: Sure. Yeah. So, in a nutshell, I run a website called Video Game Music Academy which is a resource for new and aspiring composers looking to break into the video game industry which is something that I wanted to do when I was younger but there was never any resources. So I decided to make one in ... I believe we talked July 1 when we recorded that episode. On that day, I was just starting off with a 21-day challenge then at the end of that,

Jocelyn Sams: Hey y'all, on today's podcast we help Kahkshan choose a direction for her online business.

Shane Sams: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast, where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. We're a real family that figured out how to make our entire living online. Now, we help other families do the same. Are you ready to flip your life? All right, let's get started.

Shane Sams: What's going on, everybody? Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast. It is great to be back with you again, today. We are super excited to welcome another member of the Flip Your Life community on to the show, and we're talking to someone literally on the other side of the planet today. So let's welcome Kahkshan Ali from Saudi Arabia. How you doin'?

Kahkshan Ali: Fine, thanks. Great to be here. Thanks so much, Shane, Jocelyn.

Shane Sams: We worked about 30 minutes on pronouncing your name. Even though, we've talked forever. You're so good to me when we talk on coaching calls, 'cause you just let me butcher your name 'cause I'm from Kentucky and I can't speak.

Kahkshan Ali: Yeah, no, it's fine. You guys actually said it very well, so thank you, I appreciate that.

Jocelyn Sams: Okay, awesome! We love talking to people in our international community. We have people from all over the world, and we love to travel, we love other cultures. We're fascinated by them, so we just love talking to you every single time, and we can't wait to dive in here with you today.

Kahkshan Ali: Great! Me too.

Jocelyn Sams: All right, let's jump in and talk a little bit about you. Tell us about you, your background, and what you're doing so far online.

Kahkshan Ali: Okay. Well, I'm actually a dentist, and I was really interested in doing something online for a couple of reasons. I know there's a lot of information available on the internet, but I felt that trying to come up with a course for moms and parents with young kids. Having something all in one place with some fun videos and some things that are a little bit more interactive. I wanted to try and do something like that just to be able to educate and help people, because I get questions anytime I go to like a dinner party, "Oh, you're a dentist. Oh, do you mind?" So it's like, "Okay."

Kahkshan Ali: So I thought it'd be nice to maybe try and provide some valuable information online. Which, is where everyone is going nowadays.

Shane Sams: So this is basically, this is a career offshoot type path that you've started with. So there's multiple paths that people start with online business. Some people, they go really into the passion. Some people, they go really into the hobby. Some people, they go into entertainment, but a lot of people, this is how we started out, we looked at our work. 'Cause it was where we knew the most information about a topic, period, when we started. I was a football coach. Jocelyn was a librarian. It was just a natural way to say, "Hey, I know this. I'm trained in this. I can create content fast, and I can try this out."

Shane Sams: Probably in the dentist office, just like it is when we go anywhere in a business setting, when people find out what you do they think that you have all the answers. Then they always ask you the same questions. I would guess you were getting the same questions from every parent and every kid, and you're like, "Man, I could totally make a course about this, and tell everybody what to do with their kids and their dental hygiene", right?

Kahkshan Ali: Right, exactly. Yeah, the same thing. I thought to start off it would be easier and, as you said, faster. Just because this is my field of expertise. I've been a dentist for 25 years now. So I thought this would be a good place to start, and then could move on after I did this to see what else I can maybe try.

We're a real family that figured out how to make our entire living online. And now, we help other families do the same. Are you ready to flip your life? All right, let's get started.

Shane Sams: What's going on, everybody? Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast. Super excited to be back with you today. We've got another member of the Flip Your Life community on the show, and we are going to help them take their online dreams to the next level. Want to welcome Crystal Harper to the program today. Hey, Crystal. How you doing?

Crystal Harper: Hey, guys. Thanks for having me.

Shane Sams: And I'm super excited to have Crystal on the show, because Crystal is one of our private mastermind people. We've been working with her for a few weeks, now. And she has taken massive action and made massive progress in her online business, and we're ready to get to the next level, and go to the next steps.

Jocelyn Sams: All right, it is great to have you here today, and I look forward to everyone else in our audience knowing more about your business and what you are up to. So let's start out by telling everyone a little bit about you, your background, and what you are doing online.

Crystal Harper: Okay, well I got my bachelor's degree in psychology back in 2007. And back then, I was planning on getting my PhD in clinical psychology, but I actually had a daughter right after I graduated, so I decided to take time off from school. I became a waitress. I wanted to be on my daughter's schedule during the day, so her dad watched her at night, and I worked at night. But when I turned 30, and my daughter started first grade, I decided to go back to school for my teaching certification, thinking that I would be on my daughter's schedule. But once I was in the program, I realized that wasn't really the case. So I started thinking that working in the classroom wasn't really what I wanted to do, so I decided to go back to school again and get my Master's degree in e-learning, which I will graduate from in December.

Crystal Harper: So I've just kind of been on the fence of where I'm going. And then I ran into you guys, beginning of April, and I just felt like that's where I needed to be. I've just always wanted to own my own business, but never knew how I could possibly do that. Yeah, like I said, I just found you guys and the rest is history.

Shane Sams: It's funny, because Crystal, when she says, "I found you guys," here's what she actually means. So Crystal finds our podcast, signs up for the membership, buys a ticket to Flip Your Life live, and she went to our private mastermind, all within a week. I'm watching this happen, as the week's going on. Monday, I see ... Like, "Oh, we got a ticket to Flip Your Life live. Whoa, they joined the community. Wow! They signed up for private coaching!" What is going on here? So you dove into the deep end.

Jocelyn Sams: You went all in, Crystal.

Crystal Harper: I did.

Jocelyn Sams: I like that. And you're also our people because I like how you're like, "Okay, so I started out to work in education, and then I decided I didn't want to work in education."

Shane Sams: Pivot.

Crystal Harper: Yeah. Right?

Shane Sams: All right, like, "Fork in the road, go left. I don't even know what's right. Let's just go left."

Jocelyn Sams: Oh, that's sort of the way we were. We were kind of like, "We want schedule flexibility. Let's be teachers." And then we're like, "No. Let's not."

Shane Sams: That's not as peachy as you think it is. You Know?

Crystal Harper: I know.

Shane Sams: But it is really important for people to take that lesson, though.

Rank #19: FL 193 – We help Dan apply strategic direction on creating and selling his digital product

Getting started with your online business can be overwhelming for a number of reasons.
Do you find yourself creating your content, but unable to finish because of endless revising and refining?

Do things always get in the way of your time to work on your online business, even if you set a schedule for it?

Of course, we want our digital products to be good, or perfect if possible… but how perfect is perfect enough to stop and do the next step?

How long will that take?

Scheduling time to work on your online business is to be expected, but why doesn't it always work?

These are just some of the reasons we feel stuck in our online business, and it can be very frustrating.

Well, hold your horses, y’all, because in this week’s episode we will help our guest tackle and overcome these issues to help him start and grow his online business.

We're sure you’ll learn a lot in our brainstorm and it's going to help you take your own online business to the next level too!

Our guest today is Dan Franz.

Dan is a general practitioner in Psychology and does mental health counseling. His wife is a teacher, and they have two children.

Dan did a group practice for 5 to 6 years working with and supervising other therapists, but recently switched back to doing his own one-on-one practice after the technicalities of having a larger practice deemed quite taxing.

Since the beginning of his mental health counseling, he started writing-related blogs to give him an online presence with the goal of leading people to his one-on-one practice.

This got him to acquire a list of about 800 people from his online writing, how awesome is that?!

And now, with his growing desire to help and reach more people, as well as have more time to spend with his family, Dan went on to take his business online (with an advantage of already having an existing following from his online presence).

With the majority of his digital product outline already done, he struggles with its completion due to constant revising and refining.

His work time for his online business also seems to get interrupted a lot, causing a delay in his progress.

But hey! Everyone needs a little help to get back in the right direction and get to that next step... sometimes even counselors need guidance. :)

So, join us as we help Dan overcome these setbacks -- dealing with the overwhelm, prioritization, having the right mindset -- as well as discussing strategies and direction on creating and selling his digital product.

Rank #20: Our Story – Chapter 5: The Promised Land

Welcome back! We've now reached the peak of the Our Story special series.
The past few weeks were so humbling, as we remembered the dots and details that opened the doors to us living the Flipped Lifestyle.

This week's episode is where we talk about our transition between the nine-to-five and to becoming full-time, online entrepreneurs.

Our online business journey started out with so many people around us asking, "Why did you do that?"

After taking action and showing the doubters and naysayers that success is possible, that you really don't have to live paycheck to paycheck, that question later turned into, "How did you do that?"

We realized the difference we can make in other people's lives -- a life where you can be the boss.

We created the Flipped Lifestyle to help answer one of the most vital life questions -- "How can I do that too?"

We're going all out in this episode, so we hope you can take home a nugget of wisdom or two.

And remember, if we can do it, YOU CAN DO IT TOO.

Shane: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast where life always comes before work.  We’re your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams.

We’re a real family who figured out how to make our entire living online.  And now, we help other families do the same.  Are you ready to flip your life?  Alright.  Let’s get started.

What's up, guys? Welcome back to another episode of the Flipped Lifestyle podcast.  We are super excited to be with you again today to give you the fifth and final chapter of our story.  This is the story of how two teachers from Southeast Kentucky ended up building a massive online business, and we want to tell you all of the things that we did to get to this point.

For those of you who may be just tuning in, make sure you check out the last few episodes where we tell all of the backstory.

That brings us to where we're going to talk about today.  We actually have an author that is writing a book about our story, and we thought it would be super fun to record some podcasts to tell you guys everything from the beginning so that you can get the inspiration and hope that you needed to build your own online business and create your own story.
