Rank #2: FL271 – We help Kahkshan choose a direction for her online business

In today's episode, we help Kahkshan choose a direction for her online business.
FULL TRANSCRIPT
Jocelyn Sams: Hey y'all, on today's podcast we help Kahkshan choose a direction for her online business.

Shane Sams: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast, where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. We're a real family that figured out how to make our entire living online. Now, we help other families do the same. Are you ready to flip your life? All right, let's get started.

Shane Sams: What's going on, everybody? Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast. It is great to be back with you again, today. We are super excited to welcome another member of the Flip Your Life community on to the show, and we're talking to someone literally on the other side of the planet today. So let's welcome Kahkshan Ali from Saudi Arabia. How you doin'?

Kahkshan Ali: Fine, thanks. Great to be here. Thanks so much, Shane, Jocelyn.

Shane Sams: We worked about 30 minutes on pronouncing your name. Even though, we've talked forever. You're so good to me when we talk on coaching calls, 'cause you just let me butcher your name 'cause I'm from Kentucky and I can't speak.

Kahkshan Ali: Yeah, no, it's fine. You guys actually said it very well, so thank you, I appreciate that.

Jocelyn Sams: Okay, awesome! We love talking to people in our international community. We have people from all over the world, and we love to travel, we love other cultures. We're fascinated by them, so we just love talking to you every single time, and we can't wait to dive in here with you today.

Kahkshan Ali: Great! Me too.

Jocelyn Sams: All right, let's jump in and talk a little bit about you. Tell us about you, your background, and what you're doing so far online.

Kahkshan Ali: Okay. Well, I'm actually a dentist, and I was really interested in doing something online for a couple of reasons. I know there's a lot of information available on the internet, but I felt that trying to come up with a course for moms and parents with young kids. Having something all in one place with some fun videos and some things that are a little bit more interactive. I wanted to try and do something like that just to be able to educate and help people, because I get questions anytime I go to like a dinner party, "Oh, you're a dentist. Oh, do you mind?" So it's like, "Okay."

Kahkshan Ali: So I thought it'd be nice to maybe try and provide some valuable information online. Which, is where everyone is going nowadays.

Shane Sams: So this is basically, this is a career offshoot type path that you've started with. So there's multiple paths that people start with online business. Some people, they go really into the passion. Some people, they go really into the hobby. Some people, they go into entertainment, but a lot of people, this is how we started out, we looked at our work. 'Cause it was where we knew the most information about a topic, period, when we started. I was a football coach. Jocelyn was a librarian. It was just a natural way to say, "Hey, I know this. I'm trained in this. I can create content fast, and I can try this out."

Shane Sams: Probably in the dentist office, just like it is when we go anywhere in a business setting, when people find out what you do they think that you have all the answers. Then they always ask you the same questions. I would guess you were getting the same questions from every parent and every kid, and you're like, "Man, I could totally make a course about this, and tell everybody what to do with their kids and their dental hygiene", right?

Kahkshan Ali: Right, exactly. Yeah, the same thing. I thought to start off it would be easier and, as you said, faster. Just because this is my field of expertise. I've been a dentist for 25 years now. So I thought this would be a good place to start, and then could move on after I did this to see what else I can maybe try.

Rank #3: FL308 – How to Design and Launch Your Online Product

In today's episode, we help Theresa design and launch her product.
FULL TRANSCRIPT
Jocelyn Sams: Hey y'all, on today's show we help Theresa design and launch her product.

Shane Sams: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. We're a real family that figured out how to make our entire living online. Now, we help other families do the same. Are you ready to flip your life? All right, let's get started.

Shane Sams: What's going on everybody. Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast. It is great to be back with you again today. Super excited to welcome another member of the Flipped Lifestyle community onto the show so that we can help them take their business to the next level. We're really, really, really super excited today to welcome Theresa Steckel. Theresa, welcome to the show.

Theresa Steckel: Hey guys, thanks for having me. I'm super excited to be here.

Shane Sams: And lest you think that Shane and Jocelyn are perfect I'm going to tell you what happened earlier today. We looked up, and I got a notification that said someone had joined a Zoom call. And I looked down, and I was like, "What?" Because we were getting ready for an appointment. We had a student teacher meeting at Isaac's school as we were getting ready-

Jocelyn Sams: It was a parent teacher not a student teacher.

Shane Sams: Or a parent teacher not a student teacher. That's right. We're not the students. We're the parents. But we had this parent teacher meeting, so we were getting ready to go to that, and I looked down, and I was like, "Oh no. We've double booked, the dreaded double booking when five people are controlling your calendar and you're not one of them." And so I looked over at Jocelyn. I was like, "I think we have a Podcast right now."

Jocelyn Sams: And I was like, "What?" And I'm usually such a slave to the calendar. It's so funny. I get up every day, and I look at it, and I'm like, "Oh no we've got A, B, and C to do," but for whatever reason this morning I didn't do that.

Shane Sams: And then for some reason we had A and then B, B, B, and C because there was all sorts of stuff going on at the same time. So Theresa was kind enough to move this down a couple hours, and we have finally gotten on the call together. So we are sorry that we stood you up a couple hours ago, Theresa.

Theresa Steckel: You know, that is just the way it goes sometimes.

Jocelyn Sams: Yup, life happens. I really hate rescheduling Podcasts, but thank you so much for being kind enough to do that for us.

Theresa Steckel: You're welcome. I really am just happy to be on the call, so I appreciated you guys rescheduling too.

Jocelyn Sams: Alright. Well, I'm excited for you to talk a little bit about your background. We talked about it before. Before people come onto the Podcast we do like a little intake survey so we can learn more about you, and it sort of guides our discussion and lets you know what we're going to be asking you so you can start thinking about it. And one of the things that we ask about is your background, and I think your background is really interesting. So can you get into that just a little bit. Tell us about how you started and what it is that you do and anything else you want to tell us.

Theresa Steckel: Yeah, so going way, way back we moved to Oklahoma, I don't know, like 24 years ago, and I became a housekeeper in a nursing home making a whopping $4.25 an hour and decided that ... I got talked into going to an LPN program. One of my friends talked me into it, so I got admitted into this LPN program, and she did not make the class, so I ended up there by myself.

Shane Sams: Oh no.

Theresa Steckel: Yeah.

Shane Sams: What is an LPN?

Theresa Steckel: It is a licensed practical nurse so more technical and less assessment and critical thinking. So I worked as an LPN. I was married at the time. We had a daughter.

Rank #5: FL250 – The Most Important Lessons We Learned From the Biggest Risk We Ever Took

Podcast cover

Flip your Life LIVE was a dream come true!!
In today's episode, S&J talk about lessons learned from the biggest risk they ever took.

FULL TRANSCRIPT

Jocelyn Sams: Hey, y'all. On today's podcast, we share the lessons we've learned after hosting our first major live event.

All right. Let's get started.

Shane Sams: What's going on, everybody? Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast. It is great to be back with you again this week. We've got a special episode for y'all. We do not have a guest toady. We will not be doing a Q&A. We will be doing a lot of reflecting back on the lessons that we learned from hosting our first major live event. Not long ago, about three weeks ago, from the time that we're recording this actual podcast, Jocelyn and I hosted an event in Nashville, Tennessee, for over 100 members of the Flip Your Life Community. We all came together over a three-day period to build our online businesses, to grow our online businesses, and to take massive action on changing our family's future.

Shane Sams: It was an incredible event, and it went off better than we ever could have dreamed. But as with any major undertaking that Jocelyn and I take on, we like to look back and reflect on the things we did right, the things we did wrong, and try to make things better, make things bigger as we go forward in the future. So, that's what we're going to do today. We're going to share all of these lessons and things that happened to us over the last year of planning and executing this event, so that you can take some of those lessons, take some of those strategies, take some of those things that we've learned, and apply them to whatever your next big project is for your online business.

Jocelyn Sams: And many of you have probably seen our pictures on our Facebook page, and just some of the things that we've posted about the event. You've seen the glossy exterior, but we're going to dive into some of the not so pretty things that we encountered on the journey to get there.

Shane Sams: Let's take you back to where the birthplace of Flip Your Life Live in Nashville came to be. Last December, about a year ago now, Jocelyn, out of nowhere, came to me and said, "We need to host a major live event, like a big one. Like, over 100 people, and we need to do it all by ourselves. We're going to plan it ourselves. We're going to pay for it ourselves. We're going to be on stage the entire time, and we're going to go ahead and do it next fall. It's going to happen."

Jocelyn Sams: For those of you all who know me, it wasn't completely out of nowhere. I had been to another event in the fall. I thought it was really cool, and I was like, "Hey, this is a really good sense of community. I really think that we need to bring our people together." And we had sort of been, not really against it for a long time, but just a little bit uncertain about it for a long time.

Shane Sams: I'm going to vote that I was scared to death to try. This is a total role reversal in this situation, because usually, I'm the one coming to Jocelyn going, "Okay, here's the airplane. We're going to jump out of it. We'll sew together a parachute on the way down." And this was totally out of nowhere, because Jocelyn came up to me and said, "We're going to do a live event. There's going to be over 100 people there. It's going to be amazing." My first instinct was just to freeze up, and what are we going to do? I can't do this. No way.

Jocelyn Sams: We talked about it a little bit, and as we usually do, one of us has some crazy, big idea. The other one's like, I don't know, but okay, I'll go along with it. That's kind of the way that it worked here.

FULL TRANSCRIPT
Jocelyn Sams: Hey, y'all. On today's podcast we help Rocio transition her freelance business into an online business.

Shane Sams: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast, where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. We're a real family that figured out how to make our entire living online. Now we help other families do the same. Are you ready to flip your life? All right, let's get started.

Shane Sams: What's going on everybody? Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast. It is great to be back with you again today. Super excited to have another member of the Flip Your Life Community on today's show, and we love shows like this because it's someone we have actually met in person. We're going to be celebrating a little bit of a success story today too, so let's welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast Rocio Baeza. Rocio, welcome to the show.

Rocio Baeza: Hey, guys. Thanks for having me.

Shane Sams: We practiced. We've had a lot of hard names lately on the podcast, and we had to practice this one for a little while.

Jocelyn Sams: I know, which is actually really cool because that means that our audience is from all different places.

Shane Sams: Everywhere. That's right.

Jocelyn Sams: They are of all different nationalities, and we love that. We think that is amazing. We had to figure out how to say this name because, poor Shane, I mean he especially butchers this kind of thing.

Shane Sams: I'm pretty much going with ... You say it. Say it out loud. Say it yourself.

Rocio Baeza: Rocio Baeza. Like you said, Shane, like rodeo but with an S.

Shane Sams: Rodeo. Yes, exactly. It's so much more beautiful when you say it.

Jocelyn Sams: Yes. There you go.

Shane Sams: When I say it, it sounds like some butchered redneck with a bunch of rocks in his mouth. You know what? It is what it is, and that's how we're going to go with it.

Jocelyn Sams: Okay. We need to know a little bit about this name and where you come from, so tell us a little bit about you, your background and what you've been doing so far in your day job and online.

Rocio Baeza: Sure. A little bit about myself, so I'm based in Chicago, and I am a wife, a mom of two. My professional background is in the cybersecurity space. For the last year I've been doing freelance work, so basically picking a project with tech companies where I help them figure out, all right, what do they have to do around security to protect the information that they have, and also, how do they get started and what are all the steps that they have to do in order to put together a cybersecurity program.

Shane Sams: You also do some compliance with the GDPR stuff?

Rocio Baeza: Yes.

Shane Sams: You do that too?

Rocio Baeza: Yes.

Shane Sams: What do you do in that, just make sure that they know what they're supposed to be doing with their data to be compliant with the European laws?

Rocio Baeza: Yes. A lot of the cybersecurity work, my experience has been that it's usually driven by compliance, so an organization has to comply with a specific law or regulation, think HIPAA, think GDPR. I've focused work around GDPR since it's the acronym that we've all heard since May, and it's something that I realize that organizations are going to need help in the area. Since this is just released, I figured it would be a good way to more or less ride that wave.

Shane Sams: Sure. Yeah. It is so new. I was reading an article just the other day actually where all this stuff with Facebook especially where our data has been compromised, and they're just hammering them. I would not doubt that America's about to pass something like GDPR because Facebook has been so hammered. I was watching a tech company CEO the other day. I think it was Salesforce's CEO, and he came out and said, "It's over.

Jocelyn Sams: Hey y'all. On today's podcast, we celebrate with Kevin for crossing the 100 member mark.

Shane Sams: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast, where life always comes before work. We're your hosts Shane and Jocelyn Sams. We're a real family that figured out how to make our entire living online. Now, we help other families do the same. Are you ready to flip your life? All right, let's get started.

Shane Sams: What's going on everybody? Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast. It is great to be back with you again today. And we are super excited for a number of reasons in this episode of the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast. Yes, we have a member of our Flip Your Life Community back on the show today. It's a guest that we have had before. He's actually the most prolific guest in Flipped Lifestyle Podcast history. This is his fourth appearance on the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast. And this one is going to be a great one because we are celebrating a major milestone in this member's life. His online business, his membership has just crossed the 100 member mark. Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast, our good friend and member of the year at last year's Flip Your Life Live, Kevin Depew. Kevin, welcome back.

Kevin Depew: Hey, what's going on guys? It's great to be here.

Jocelyn Sams: We are so excited to talk to you today. We got a message not too long ago from Kevin. And he was really excited saying he had crossed over 100 members. And I think that it's safe to say, Kevin, that this was definitely not an overnight success.

Kevin Depew: Yeah, this would be the polar opposite of overnight success.

Shane Sams: Hey, success is success, right? And it usually takes a long time to become an overnight success. So, real quick, tell us a little bit. How many members do you have now? And-

Kevin Depew: We're at ... Go ahead.

Shane Sams: How many members do you have now? And tell us a bit about what your business is. Just remind everybody what's going on.

Kevin Depew: Okay. Yeah. We are at 105 members. We run a website, relaxandlearnguitar.com where I teach folks over 40 how to play guitar, so they can relax, have fun, and be part of a great online community.

Shane Sams: Man, I see your stuff in my newsfeed all the time because you know you see the stuff from your friends and stuff? And I just always see ... like, you always make me want to play guitar. I need to relax and learn ... I need to relax a little bit. I'm a little high strung. So, maybe I need to learn it. But man, that is so incredible just knowing your journey and knowing how long it's taken you to get to that 100 member mark. And that's a really big number for us because we tell everybody if you can get 100 people to give you $50 a month or 200 people to give you $25 a month, you can make real money. You could make $5,000 a month, $60,000 a year. And just getting 100 real people to give you money and you give them value and you make a difference in their life. Like, imagine if you were in your living room and you had 100 human beings pile into your living room right now, what would that look like? Your house would be spilling out into the streets because you couldn't fit 100 people into your house, right?

Kevin Depew: Yes, very crowded.

Shane Sams: Yes. And you've got 100 people that are in your thriving guitar-based community, man. And how long ago did you start Relax and Learn Guitar? What year did you start that in?

Kevin Depew: So, my ... Let's see, a bunch of pivots and a bunch of changes. And Relax and Learn Guitar, first member was December of 2016.

Shane Sams: Wow.

Kevin Depew: Yeah, two and a half years.

Shane Sams: Wow, that's amazing. And I love how you said many pivots because you had another website. I remember when you joined the Flip Your Life community. And in the show notes for today's episode,

Rank #8: FL267 – Should Entrepreneurs Homeschool Their Kids?

Podcast cover
Read more
Aaron and Kaleena Amuchastegui are entrepreneurs and the authors of "The 5-Hour School Week: An Inspirational Guide to Leaving the Classroom to Embrace Learning in a Way You Never Imagined"

Have you ever thought about homeschooling your kids?

Homeschool has been on our mind for a little over a year now.

When we left our "9-to-5" jobs, we found freedom we never imagined working from home.

But when our kids went to school, we found ourselves frustrated by the rigid nature of the school system.

It felt like we had jobs again.  Be here on time.  Call in sick.  Ask permission to go on trips.  Etc.

And the kids often told us school felt like prison.

Do as your told, follow the bells, eat when we say, go to the bathroom when we say, play when we say, sit where we say...

The school system itself feels broken, almost out of date.

The entrepreneurial lessons and life skills we wanted our kids to learn, are just not an integral part of the curriculum in the school system.

And the rigid nature of the school calendar and day left little room for freedom.

Freedom of expression, travel, what you do with your time...

Our kids were basically being taught to sit at a desk (cubicle?), follow orders, and be good little cogs in the machine.

We kept getting more and more frustrated by the education system.

So we start looking at homeschool for our kids.

Considering homeschool is overwhelming.

Dozens of questions/doubts/fears flood into your mind:

What is the best homeschool curriculum?
Are there any homeschool programs in my area?
We are people of faith.  Are there any Christian homeschool curriculum available?
Who is going to teach the kids everyday?
What if we don't know about something we are teaching them?
What about online homeschool? Is that a thing?

It's clear there are a lot of benefits to homeschooling: 1-on-1 attention, learning at your own pace, freedom of schedule, to name a few.

But answering the question of HOW to homeschool your child is a daunting task to wrap your head around.

So we looked for help!

That's when we found Aaron and Kaleena Amuchastegui.

Aaron and Kalena are the authors of "The 5-Hour School Week: An Inspirational Guide to Leaving the Classroom to Embrace Learning in a Way You Never Imagined."

As we were looking for homeschool resources to learn about the process, we were specifically looking for entrepreneurs who also homeschooled.  People who valued experiences, entrepreneurship, and freedom!

When we found "The 5-Hour School Week" and Aaron and Kaleena, we knew we had found our answers!

We had to have them on the podcast.

In today's EXTENDED episode of the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast, Aaron and Kaleena guide us through the homeschooling decision.

We cover all the hard questions like:

When should I start homeschooling?
What's the perfect homeschool schedule?
Can ANYONE homeschool?
What are the advantages of homeschool?
What are the disadvantages of homeschool?
How do you keep your kids from getting bored?
What about the social skills they develop in school? How do you replace that?
What about sports opportunities and activities for homeschool children?
How do homeschool children earn their high school diploma or get into college?
And many more!

This is an A to Z discussion all about homeschooling!

We asked all of our questions, AND we opened the door for our community to send in questions for Aaron and Kaleena as well.

If you have ever wondered, "Should I homeschool my child" then you need to listen to today's podcast!

FULL TRANSCRIPT
Jocelyn Sams: Hey, y'all. On today's podcast, we catch up with former guest Daniel Hulsman after his membership launch.

Shane Sams: Welcome to the Flip Lifestyle Podcast, where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. We're a real family that figured out how to make our entire living online. Now, we help other families do the same. You ready to flip your life? All right, let's get started.

Shane Sams: What's going on, everybody? Welcome back to the Flip Lifestyle Podcast. It is great to be back with you again this week. I am really pumped up today because we are welcoming back a former guest, who was previously on the show. He's now launched his membership, launched his business, actually has customers, and this is even a more special former guest, because he is our favorite former troll. It's our good buddy, Daniel Hulsman. Daniel, welcome back to the show, man.

Daniel Hulsman: Hey, Shane and Jocelyn. Thank you for having me.

Jocelyn Sams: Yes, absolutely. We are happy to have you.

Jocelyn Sams: ... here, again, today. We have some exciting stuff to talk about, some, kinda, hard stuff to talk about. We just got a really good conversation brewing, today. So we're really excited about this. We've been following along with you after your membership launch. You've had a few ups and downs, I would say.

Daniel Hulsman: Yeah. Just a few.

Shane Sams: Now, let me get everybody caught back up 'cause I think this is airing somewhere around December, January. I'm not exactly sure. So, Daniel was on the show back in July of 2018. It was episode 212. Right, Jocelyn?

Jocelyn Sams: Yep, flippedlifestyle.com/podcast212.

Shane Sams: So the interesting story behind Daniel even appearing on the show is Daniel didn't come to the Flipped Lifestyle community or podcast in, what I would call, the normal way. Daniel actually sent me some scathing hate mail at one point.

Daniel Hulsman: Oh. It wasn't that.

Jocelyn Sams: Okay.

Shane Sams: It gets worse every time I tell the story, though. You know how it goes.

Jocelyn Sams: In his defense, it's not the worse thing we've ever gotten.

Shane Sams: It's not the worse thing we've ever gotten.

Daniel Hulsman: It was definitely saucy.

Shane Sams: It was saucy? It was quite the criticism. Okay?

Daniel Hulsman: Yeah.

Shane Sams: As I'm known to do, I like to engage with people online whether it's via email or fan mail or not-so-fan mail. Right? I actually got into a great discussion with Daniel and, kind of, challenged him to come in and actually look at our community, check us out, see how everything's going. Anyway, long story short, I've even invited him on the podcast. I said, "I'll tell you what. Come on the podcast. We'll talk about it," and we did. Right? Daniel's been a member, now, for a while, in the Flip Your Life community and just an awesome guy, just a great heart, and I am so glad that we became friends and that we got to be doing this online business stuff together.

Shane Sams: So, long story short, we talked to you about your business and all that good stuff. Tell everybody a little bit, real quick, about your business, the nutshell version and, kind of, what's happened since you've joined the Flip Your Life community since that podcast. Tell them just a little bit about your business and where it ended up at, at this point, today.

Daniel Hulsman: Sure. Yeah. So, in a nutshell, I run a website called Video Game Music Academy which is a resource for new and aspiring composers looking to break into the video game industry which is something that I wanted to do when I was younger but there was never any resources. So I decided to make one in ... I believe we talked July 1 when we recorded that episode. On that day, I was just starting off with a 21-day challenge then at the end of that,

Jocelyn Sams: Hey, y'all on today's show, we help Janet take her Spanish education business to the next level.

Shane Sams: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast where life always comes before work. We're your hosts Shane and Jocelyn Sams. We're a real family that figured out how to make our entire living online. Now, we help other families do the same. Are you ready to Flip Your Life? All right, let's get started.

Shane Sams: What is going on everybody? Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast. It is great to be back with you again this week. Super excited to have another real member of the Flip Your Life Community, a real person out there starting, building and growing their own online business so they can change their family's future. We're here to help them take their business to the next level and let you guys listen in so that you can take your online business to the next level as well. We are really, really excited today because we have Janet Jimenez on the podcast. Janet, how are you doing?

Janet Jimenez: Good. Thanks for having me.

Shane Sams: Did I say that right? Jimenez or Jimenez? How do you say it?

Janet Jimenez: You're pretty close to it, it's Jimenez.

Shane Sams: Okay. Janet Jimenez. How do you spell that for me? Spell that out for us.

Janet Jimenez: Okay. It's got a J, J-i-m-e-n-e-z.

Shane Sams: So before I got on air, I just went straight Kentucky, uneducated redneck on Janet. I said, hey Janet, I'm going to introduce you as Janet Geminiz, and she was like, no, that is not.

Jocelyn Sams: except you're not, 'cause that's not my name.

Shane Sams: Except you're not because that's not how we pronounce that at all.

Janet Jimenez: Well, I thought for a big sports fan. You would know how to pronounce the last name there.

Jocelyn Sams: No, actually. I probably would have because I like to talk about how I did take four years of Spanish in high school. Unfortunately that was 20 years ago and I remember very little of it, which is sad, but I do remember that.

Shane Sams: Jocelyn is amazing because she can read it and understand it, but not always speak it in like, so we'll go places where there's like Spanish speaking and she'll kind of know what's going on. But she doesn't ever use it so I can't even imagine how good she would be at it if we just dropped her into a Spanish speaking country for a year. She could probably be fluent.

Janet Jimenez: Oh yeah. To just be immersed and then you'll pick it up.

Jocelyn Sams: yeah exactly. I love going places though and just trying to see if I can read things. A lot of times I can still read. It's just the Kentucky Spanish that I learned, I don't think the speaking was always very accurate.

Shane Sams: That's where we know the Geminiz not Jimenez, you know what I'm saying?

Jocelyn Sams: Well my teacher her parents were from Puerto Rico, so I mean hers was really good but just trying to learn it was kind of hard. All right, well let's jump in. I love these kind of podcasts because we've actually met you in real life, which is super cool.

Shane Sams: Janet is also a member of our all access mastermind. So we get to talk to her quite a bit over the phone.

Jocelyn Sams: And I love talking to people that we have met in real life because you just already have a rapport with them, which is really cool. So let's jump into a little bit about you, your background, and what you are doing online.

Janet Jimenez: Sure. So I am a mom of six. I have five children plus a stepson. My husband is from the Dominican Republic, so an island in the Caribbean and a Spanish speaker and I am a teacher. I have worked as a teacher for 13 years in Spanish immersion school, so that's basically elementary school in Spanish. And I have a business that sells educational resources to busy bilingual and Spanish teachers...

FULL TRANSCRIPT

Jocelyn Sams: Hey y'all. On today's podcast we'll discuss one decision you can make that will help you achieve incredible success in 2019.

Shane Sams: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. We're a real family that figured out how to make our entire living online. And now we help other families do the same. Are you ready to flip your life? All right, let's get started.

Shane Sams: What's going on everybody? Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast. It is great to be back with you again today. We've got a special edition for you guys this week. A lot of people ask us, "What's the secret to your success? What's the one big thing you guys did, or have done, or continue to do to move the needle and achieve all of the things you've done online?"

Shane Sams: And while there are a lot of things that we could point to, one of the biggest catalysts for us both in the beginning and still to this day for achieving online success for being able to make enough money online to quit our jobs and build this life that we dreamed up a few years ago is attending live events.

Jocelyn Sams: Live events have definitely always been a huge catalyst for us just throughout the journey. Even at the beginning when we were really scared to death to go to one because it is a big investment in both time and money. But going to them, putting ourselves out there and deciding to do it has been huge for us many, many times over the years.

Shane Sams: In fact, if we had not started going to live events, I'm not even sure one that we would be here right now doing Flipped Lifestyle. But two, that our business even would have made it. You know, after we quit our job back in September 2013, things went pretty good for the first few months.

Shane Sams: But then as the spring hit, and our niche kind of dried up a little bit, our revenue dropped dramatically. We had achieved a huge amount of success in the fall of 2013 and we had created kind of an emergency fund in case the business didn't work later.

Shane Sams: But after we quit our jobs, we were on our own, no paychecks. And all we had was the money that was coming in each month, and this little kind of nest egg that we had set aside and saved after our big August, this big launch that we had in case something went wrong. Well, things went wrong, dramatically wrong.

Shane Sams: Like, we were really were not making enough each month in February of like 2014 to really even pay the bills. And it looked like we were gonna need to dust off our resumes and go look for jobs again in the summer because revenue kept dropping.

Shane Sams: We didn't know what was wrong. We didn't know why our marketing wasn't working. We didn't know why our list had suddenly dried up. And we were all alone. It was just me and Jocelyn trying to figure this out. And it was a really, really scary period in our business.

Shane Sams: At that point I knew we needed some kind of help. But we didn't know where to reach out to. There was nobody around us that really got what we did. Nobody that we knew was doing anything online. And we were totally unconnected to the industry save for listening to podcasts and hearing about other people who were doing what we were trying to do.

Shane Sams: So one night I saw that Pat Flynn was going to have a live event in San Diego, California and it was gonna be in June. And there was only a very limited amount of spots to get into this event. But it was gonna be really, really strategic, really tactical.

Shane Sams: It was gonna be other entrepreneurs flying in from all over the country. And there were gonna be experts there with Pat. And they were gonna talk about your business and teach you strat...

Jocelyn Sams: Hey y'all. On today's show, we help Crystal launch her product and find customers.

Shane Sams: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast, where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. We're a real family that figured out how to make our entire living online. And now, we help other families do the same. Are you ready to flip your life? All right, let's get started.

Shane Sams: What's going on, everybody? Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast. Super excited to be back with you today. We've got another member of the Flip Your Life community on the show, and we are going to help them take their online dreams to the next level. Want to welcome Crystal Harper to the program today. Hey, Crystal. How you doing?

Crystal Harper: Hey, guys. Thanks for having me.

Shane Sams: And I'm super excited to have Crystal on the show, because Crystal is one of our private mastermind people. We've been working with her for a few weeks, now. And she has taken massive action and made massive progress in her online business, and we're ready to get to the next level, and go to the next steps.

Jocelyn Sams: All right, it is great to have you here today, and I look forward to everyone else in our audience knowing more about your business and what you are up to. So let's start out by telling everyone a little bit about you, your background, and what you are doing online.

Crystal Harper: Okay, well I got my bachelor's degree in psychology back in 2007. And back then, I was planning on getting my PhD in clinical psychology, but I actually had a daughter right after I graduated, so I decided to take time off from school. I became a waitress. I wanted to be on my daughter's schedule during the day, so her dad watched her at night, and I worked at night. But when I turned 30, and my daughter started first grade, I decided to go back to school for my teaching certification, thinking that I would be on my daughter's schedule. But once I was in the program, I realized that wasn't really the case. So I started thinking that working in the classroom wasn't really what I wanted to do, so I decided to go back to school again and get my Master's degree in e-learning, which I will graduate from in December.

Crystal Harper: So I've just kind of been on the fence of where I'm going. And then I ran into you guys, beginning of April, and I just felt like that's where I needed to be. I've just always wanted to own my own business, but never knew how I could possibly do that. Yeah, like I said, I just found you guys and the rest is history.

Shane Sams: It's funny, because Crystal, when she says, "I found you guys," here's what she actually means. So Crystal finds our podcast, signs up for the membership, buys a ticket to Flip Your Life live, and she went to our private mastermind, all within a week. I'm watching this happen, as the week's going on. Monday, I see ... Like, "Oh, we got a ticket to Flip Your Life live. Whoa, they joined the community. Wow! They signed up for private coaching!" What is going on here? So you dove into the deep end.

Jocelyn Sams: You went all in, Crystal.

Crystal Harper: I did.

Jocelyn Sams: I like that. And you're also our people because I like how you're like, "Okay, so I started out to work in education, and then I decided I didn't want to work in education."

Shane Sams: Pivot.

Crystal Harper: Yeah. Right?

Shane Sams: All right, like, "Fork in the road, go left. I don't even know what's right. Let's just go left."

Jocelyn Sams: Oh, that's sort of the way we were. We were kind of like, "We want schedule flexibility. Let's be teachers." And then we're like, "No. Let's not."

Shane Sams: That's not as peachy as you think it is. You Know?

Crystal Harper: I know.

Shane Sams: But it is really important for people to take that lesson, though.

Jocelyn Sams: Hey, y'all. On today's podcast, we help Kevin develop a sales pitch for his online membership.

Shane Sams: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast, where life always come before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. We're a real family that figured out how to make our entire living online, and now we help other families do the same. Are you ready to flip your life? All right, let's get started.

Shane Sams: What's going on, everybody? Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast. It is a beautiful sunny day here in Kentucky, and we are super excited to welcome back a former guest on the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast, a long time member, one of our moderators, and last year's Flip Your Life Member of the Year, Kevin DePew. Welcome back to the show, man.

Kevin DePew: Hey, thank you. Very excited to be here.

Jocelyn Sams: Member of the Year.

Shane Sams: The Member of the Year. We're gonna talk about that. We're gonna talk about that in a minute, though.

Kevin DePew: I'm surprised by that, yes.

Jocelyn Sams: Yeah, it was really exciting. We presented Kevin with a special award at last year's live event, and we got to meet him in person for the first time. And it was just a really, really great time. We're gonna get into that just a little bit more in a few minutes, but before we talk about all that, let's get into a little bit about you, for people who maybe have not listened to your other podcast or don't know you. Tell us a little bit about you, your background, and what you do online.

Kevin DePew: Yeah. My name is Kevin. I am been doing this online business thing for a little while, I'd say a little over two years we've been doing relaxandlearnguitar.com, we being my wife Vicky, who helps me a lot with this now. We are empty nesters, have had many, many years in corporate America, working with various jobs, mostly with families and children. Vicky worked with seniors for awhile. And I about three years ago just heard you guys on, I think, Pat Flynn is how I found you guys, and the tractor story, and I just kind of from there went, "This is amazing. I think this is something I need to look into." Started listening to your podcast, joined your membership, and it's been fantastic. It's been life changing, honestly. It's been really good.

Shane Sams: That's awesome, man. I love to hear that. I love people who like, I literally know every minute of their story online, because I feel like I know everything you've ever done.

Jocelyn Sams: And it's kind of hard not to just jump right in, because we already know all these things about you, but I just want to make sure that the listeners know how cool of a person you are.

Shane Sams: When you joined the community, remember you had some crazy other idea?

Kevin DePew: Yeah, the guitar thing is probably idea number four or five.

Shane Sams: What was the thing you were doing when you first came in, though?

Kevin DePew: Oh, gosh, it was either a combination of time management or creativity or ...

Jocelyn Sams: Yes.

Shane Sams: Yeah, it was something about the creativity thing, and I remember you posted in the forum one day, and you were like, "What do you guys think?"

Jocelyn Sams: We're like, "No."

Shane Sams: I'm like, "Kevin, man, I don't usually say this, but this is awful. This is terrible. You don't even seem like you like this. What are you doing, man?" Then I remember specifically asking you in the forums, though, "Dude, what do you want to do? What do you want to do?" And you literally were like, "Man, I just want to relax, play guitar."

Kevin DePew: And now here we are.

Shane Sams: And now you have a website called Relax and Learn Guitar. It's funny how that works out. Going back just a little bit, how did it help you to pick something that you wanted to do, not that you thought might work?

What up FL Fam!

I'm 5 years into this online business and just cracked my 6 figure goal for this year - Whoooo Hooooo!

The income has been a combination of the following streams of revenue:

Membership Sales (majority of my income came from the memberships on my site)
Single PDF / Resource sales on my site
PDF / Resource sales on Teachers Pay Teachers (this alone was around 30K this year)
E-Course income from a Phys Ed Professional Development company
Speaking / Presenting Fees for leading District and Conference professional development sessions for PE teachers

As I've just had my 3rd child, I can't say how grateful I am for the income from this online business that allows my wife to stay home with our kids and also has allowed me to impact tons of other teachers in a positive way in the field of Physical Education.

Before I signed up for the FYL E-Course (before it was a membership) in 2014 I would have never dreamed of making the income or having the impact that I've been able to have today and I'm really thankful for Shane and Jocelyn for creating such an awesome community.

It's been a ton of hard work, but has also been really enjoyable and satisfying to create something for myself.

Thanks Everyone!

P.S. I gave a more detailed breakdown of my yearly progress over the last 5 years in this post last year  if anyone is interested

In today's episode, we help Brian figure out if his business idea will make money online.
FULL TRANSCRIPT
Jocelyn: Hey y'all, on today's podcast we help Brian figure out if his business idea will make money online.

Shane: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. We're a real family that figured out how to make our entire living online. Now we help other families do the same. Are you ready to flip your life? All right, let's get started.

Shane: What's going on everybody? Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast. It is great to be back with you again today. Super excited to talk to another member of the Flip Your Life community. You'll have to bear with us. Jocelyn and I are just getting back from a conference, and both of our voices are a little shot. We're still a little jet lagged, but that's not going to hold us back from helping today's Flip Your Life community member, Brian Kelley. Brian, we're tired, but welcome to the show.

Brian: Thank you. Thank you for having me. I appreciate it.

Shane: And Brian's on the road too. He's on the road too.

Brian: I absolutely am, yup.

Shane: He's in Chicago at a conference, so he might be a little tired too. We're going to go through this now. We're going to fight through it together. How's that?

Brian: That sounds great.

Jocelyn: We're excited to talk to you today, Brian. You are coming to our event, which is coming up very, very soon so that is super exciting. And I know that you have been taking a lot of action lately which is how you got on the show today, so congratulations for that. And we can't wait to hear a little bit more about it, but before we get there let's hear about you and your background.

Brian: All right. I work in restaurants. I've been in the restaurant industry for about 25 years, and I actually love it. I love my job. I'm married with two kids, and the issue I tend to run into is that I'm concerned about our financial future. I like what I do, but both of our kids have special needs, and it requires extra planning for the future. I don't think that there's a way for me to get my family where we ultimately need to be at retirement with just our incomes. So I'm looking to supplement it with something online.

Brian: And then the other reason that I've been pursuing it is just because I think it's a lot of fun. I've listened to your Podcast for a long time now, and I've actually been a member for a year. Everything that I learn that's new and sitting down and actually creating a website and stuff is really intriguing to me. I find it exciting, and I like it, so that's kind of why I chose this path. I'm just looking for any bit of success at this point. I think I've done a lot of the base level stuff. I'm up and rolling, and I'm just trying to get that first dollar made.

Shane: Dude, I get it, man. I sat there for months and months waiting for any amount of money to flow into my pocket. And what's crazy is we ask our guests on the show, we look for people in the forums who are taking action, filling out success stories, helping other people, and you have just had this flurry of activity. You've been taking all the courses, talking in the forums, coming to the live event in September, and all of this stuff lately. And that's kind of how we were like, "Whoa, what is this guy doing? He is doing everything. We've got to get him on the show, we've got to help him because we really want to reward action takers in the community." What caused this flurry of activity. You said you've been in the community for a year now. What's happened lately or changed or how'd you [inaudible 00:03:42] to get moving forward in your business?

Brian: It was two things. It was, one, probably first and foremost, a new idea for a website. And secondly was I just got really angry that I hadn't finished my last idea, that I hadn't succeeded with it.

Hey Y’all, welcome to another Flipped Lifestyle Podcast Q&A w/ S&J!

In the Flip Your Life Community, we hold a members-only Q&A twice a month where we answer online business questions of our members live on air!

This podcast episode features some of the highlights of these recent live member Q&As to give you a glimpse of how we help the members of our community, and help you as well in online business by listening in.
Today’s Q&A highlights answer the following questions:

Should I pre-sell a membership before membership area is ready/setup with "special pricing"? Or just launch and say that things are being added daily? (It is a teacher/education niche)
- Janet
I've gotten a bit behind in promotion of my Launch - Online Training Workshop - promotion. It's scheduled for 6/24, I was planning on doing the 2weeks of promo email, Facebook ads and Google ads. I'm concerned about delaying the launch versus giving enough time for promotion. What do you think would be best?
- Jennifer
I've written about 75% of my book. I'm going to self-publish. What would a realistic timeline be to complete a book, tweak it and get it ready, and get it out to the public? Is January 2019 a good deadline to get it on Amazon and being sold?
- Rebecca
Can you talk about how I should think about YouTube for: YouTube Lives, my Launch Webinar (embedded into a LeadPage), monthly Member Calls. Do I used the same channel profile for all of those? For YouTube Lives, do I use a "reusable stream key" link, so I can use the same one each time? Do you use an encoder?
- Jennifer
Shane, you mentioned Dan Kennedy's quote that it's easier to find new audience than to write a new speech when it comes to doing weekly webinars. How does it work if we want to do weekly webinars on the same topic on YouTube Live though? Say you guys do "How to start an Internet Business" webinar every week. It'll be the same content every week! I know the value is in the interaction and Q&A, but why would people still bother to sign up for the next run of the same-titled webinar if they could just watch the replay and learn the contents? Wouldn't this be a case where it might be necessary to "write a new speech"? Also, there's 1 thing I don't get. I do YouTube Lives for my webinar. I'll announce when my webinar will be (say, coming Monday 9am) but anyone could watch the webinar without needing to opt in, since it will be available for anyone's viewing (since they could just click that "Live" video from my YouTube page). I know I want the emails, but I don't get why anyone would want to opt in if they could just join us as a general YouTube subscriber?

I paused all my auto-webinars during my spring membership drive. I need to re-start them, but I'm not happy with my current auto (Recorded) webinar software, EverWebinar. I recently left WebinarJam, and I'd like to leave EverWebinar, too. Any suggestions for which software to switch to? Is anybody else using anything that seems to work smoothly for doing automated, recorded webinars?

FULL TRANSCRIPT
Shane: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast where life always comes before work.  We’re your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams.

We’re a real family who figured out how to make our entire living online.  And now, we help other families do the same.  Are you ready to flip your life?  Alright.  Let’s get started.

What's up, guys?  Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast.  Super excited to be back with you again today as Jocelyn and I continue our story about our entrepreneurial journey so that we can inspire you and show you what is possible, kind of what happened to us, this whirlwind ride that led to where we are today with the Flipped Lifestyle as compared to our old 9-to-5 jobs.

In our last episode, we talked about how we got married, how we ended up finally getting married, then we got engaged.  It was a really, really whirlwind process because I was coaching football.  I just got a job at West Virginia as a graduate assistant.  Jocelyn was living in Lexington, Kentucky.  I was moving to Morgantown, and I basically called Jocelyn one day and we had a nice logical discussion about if we should get married or not.

Jocelyn: Of course we did.

Shane: Of course we did.

Jocelyn: Because that's how I roll.

Shane: I like to tell Jocelyn I was on one knee on the other end of the phone, she just couldn't see it at the time.

Jocelyn: Yeah right.

Shane: That is totally not true.  We were just seriously having a good conversation. We decided that it would be a good idea that we should get married on July 3.  What year did we get married?

Jocelyn: 2004.

Shane: 2004.  Okay, that was a total man thing.  Not even remembering the year.  I do remember the date.  It was July 3rd, and because that was the only day we had free before we had to get back to work.  Most people have long engagements and all this romance, and they plan all these things.  We had a month and a half, maybe two months.  We just immediately called all of our family and we were being like, "Hey, you got the third free?  Because we've got to get married very, very fast."

Jocelyn: And the bad thing was Shane's brother, Aaron, he was on a mission trip in Russia.  We decided this, and he was going to be gone during this time, but it was the only day that we had.  If we didn't get married on this particular day, it was going to be another year before we had a chance to do it again.  Shane had to call Aaron.  He was the first person to know, and he was like, "Look, man, I know you are going to Russia, but we need to get this over with."

Shane: We were just talking about our marriage in the terms of, "We got to get this over with.  I mean, I got to marry this guy.  I don't know what is going on.  We should get it over with."

Jocelyn: That is pretty much how romantic this story is.  So anyway, we really do love each other, we really do. Anyway, he had to call Aaron and be like, "Hey, man, I know you can't come, but is that cool with you?"

Shane: And he was like, "Oh yeah, it's cool, man."  I'm like, "Great! Okay!"  So I started calling everybody, and Jocelyn started calling everybody.  I've got a huge family.  There is five of us total brothers, and we all got families and stuff.  I'm calling everybody, we don't even know where we were going to have it, we didn't know what we were going to do.

But I'm like, "Hey guys, we're getting married on the third.  Hey guys, we're getting married on the third."   Everybody kept asking, they were like,

In today's episode, we talk about how we helped Blair with a pricing change that resulted in $20,000.00 in recurring revenue.
FULL TRANSCRIPT
Jocelyn Sams: Hey y'all. On today's podcast, we talk about how taking one risk made Blair $20,000.00 in recurring revenue.

Shane Sams: Welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast, where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. We're a real family who figured out how to make our entire living online. Now, we help other families do the same. Are you ready to flip your life? All right, let's get started.

Shane Sams: What is going on everybody? Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast. It is great to be back with you again this week. And man, we have got an amazing success story for you guys. It is going to inspire you to take massive actions. Maybe to go in and take some of those risks that you've been avoiding, and just show you what is truly possible when you're all in, online.

Shane Sams: I wanna welcome to the show today, Flip Your Life community member ... Oh wait, hold on. Pause. Blair, how do you pronounce your last name?

Blair T.: Thielemier. The H is silent.

Shane Sams: Okay. Thielemier.

Blair T.: Yes.

Jocelyn Sams: Yes.

Jocelyn Sams: Tea, like I drink every morning. Tea.

Shane Sams: Because I was about to say Thielemier.

Blair T.: No.

Jocelyn Sams: I can only imagine what you get called.

Shane Sams: Wanna welcome to the show today, Flip Your Life member, Blair Thielemier. Blair, welcome.

Blair T.: Thank you for having me.

Jocelyn Sams: It's so exciting to have you on today. This is my favorite kinda show, as you know, if you listen to our show very often. I love it when we have people on that we have met in real life. And I have actually spent time with Blair a couple of different times. So, it's really cool to have you on today.

Blair T.: Yeah, yeah, so I got to meet you last year in Southern California, at a Women's Leadership Conference. And then, again at Flipped Life Live. So that, was really exciting for me, too.

Shane Sams: Yeah, Flip Your Life Live was incredible, because it was just this overwhelming emotional experience, meeting people who ... that weird feeling. It was like the Facebook affect, almost. You feel like you know each other in real life already, and then you're actually in the same place. And our brains have not evolved properly, to handle all these social media connections that we have, or these community connections that we have online, so then it's just a surreal experience, isn't it? To get in the same room with people you feel like you already know personally?

Blair T.: And I really loved what you guys did with the Facebook group. Most conferences that you go to, once you buy your ticket, it's like, you don't get to meet anyone til you get there. But with Flipped Life Live, we had the Facebook group, and that, for me, 'cause I didn't know anyone, was really helpful to get to put names with faces, and not feel like I was going in, not knowing anyone.

Shane Sams: Now, I really do feel like, that we knew you quite personally before the event, because we had worked together, and we had done some coaching calls. We had talked to you in the forums about some different things that you were doing online. And we kinda made some radical changes in your business. And we say radical changes, but it really was just changing one thing, right? We just kind of switched the way you were presenting an offer. And it led to this massive amount of success that we're gonna talk about in a few minutes.

Shane Sams: But tell everybody a little bit more about you, your background, and your online business, leading up to that point where we had that coaching call.

Blair T.: Okay, so by training, I am a Pharmacist. It was 2014, and I was pregnant with my daughter. And I got the news that the small hospital that I was working for was facing some budget cuts.

On today’s podcast we help Flip Your Life Community member Tim Madison turn his web development skills into an online membership.  We also show How to Start a Successful Youtube Channel! Tim is just starting out but he’s already built a website and starting to create courses for his future members. He’s a little unclear about who he’s going to serve. Shane helps Tim answer some important questions that anyone can ask when starting an online business. Shane helps Tim find a great domain name for his membership site and teaches him how to start a successful YouTube channel!

Listen to today's show, so you can learn how to start a successful YouTube Channel!
What You'll Learn:

Why you shouldn't be building someone else’s dream. (10:00)

What is your value proposition going to be? (17:15)
How to make your next steps. (37:30)
Tim's Story...
Tim Madison works as a full-time web developer and has been doing that for a little more than 10 years. He always knew he wanted to be an entrepreneur - trying freelance web development, making mobile apps, but none of the things he tried worked out quite right. Making money online make sense because after all - he lives online.

That’s when he ran across the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast! After listening to us, he decided to teach what he knew. Of course there are other people teaching web development online - but Tim can offer what the others aren’t. What aren’t they doing? Offering constant and community through a membership model!

Tim is actually very happy working the web development company he is with now. It’s ironically one of the reasons he wants to get into online business. Previously, he worked for a company that went bankrupt and had been in business as long as 50 years. But while working for that company he was miserable in that corporate setting. Luckily, about a month after leaving is when he started working for the company he is at now. While he loves the job he is at now - he has realized that he doesn’t want to build somebody else’s dream anymore.
Building someone else’s dream.
Even if you’re in a dream job it’s still somebody else’s dream! What’s worse? Who’s to say that it always be that awesome boss, the company won’t get bought out, what if people leave and the culture changes? Look at the COVID-19 pandemic: jobs are booming replaceable, positions reduced.

I’m not one to say, “I told you so” but I’ve been saying this forever. I’ve had jobs in the past that were bulletproof. I was a tenured school teacher - unless you break the law you’re untouchable. Even at that - I worked at a school where they consolidated and it erased tenure and just like that my job disappeared. Now people are really seeing how jobs that are “recession-proof” don’t exist. The only thing that is “recession-proof” is you rolling up your sleeves and taking care of yourself! We have seen this is in our own business first-hand. We have positioned ourselves to help people be self-sufficient. And, because of our businesses and because of that we actually grew during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ex. Teachers might not be in the classroom and don’t need lesson plans but they still have to teach. Maybe they are uploading them into Google Classroom and other things so we started making adjustments. So, we changed things around and loosened our license so that we could offer things for Google Classroom. We were there to support them as they learned how to teach from home.

We just pivoted - when you have your own business you get to make that call! At least have a side hustle like Tim with your own membership site. That’s what online businesses buy you - freedom. You don’t have massive over-head, you don’t have to worry about your store-front being closed down, you have total control to pivot and move!
What is your value proposition going to be?
What are you going to offer people? Right now Tim is just getting started which is a great time for us to talk! Tim:

Show Notes
Back in 2012, my wife Jocelyn and I started our journey to entrepreneurship. We had some really bad stuff happen to us at work and we decided to start our own online business. We started out with digital courses, PDFs, all kinds of stuff to download with a one time purchase.
A couple years later we noticed some issues with stability. We putting a ton of work in, had to start back at zero every single month. We didn’t really know what we were doing.
We went to a conference in the Philippines, hosted by Chris Ducker, called Tropical Think Tank. We went just to get around other entrepreneurs and see what they were doing. We were sitting at a table one day with James Schramko, and starting telling him about what were selling, how it was going good, but was so high energy. He flat out told us it was a membership, all we needed to do was sell it once and have people pay you forever. He told us to read The Membership Economy by Robbie Kellman Baxter on our way home.
So, of course, I read the whole thing on our way back to the Philippines. And, read it all in one sitting. I knew when we closed the book that we had to do what this book said, as soon as possible.
And, then in June of 2015, as soon as we got home, we implemented the membership model into each and every one of our four businesses.
Within 30 days of opening our membership, we had over 1,000 members, paying an average of $49 to $99 a month, and it’s been that way ever since. Now, we’ve helped over 3,000 people do the same thing in the last 5 years.
All of that literally came from us reading The Membership Economy by Robbie Kellman Baxter.
The Membership Economy
Robbie’s book, The Membership Economy came out in 2015, which meant most of the writing was done in 2014. However, she began making notes for the book a decade before, back in 2004.
Robbie had been working with Netflix back in 2002 and 2003, where she fell in love with their business model. She was taking notes like:
“Should every business have a free trial?”
“Should every business 100% membership or 100% not?

She would meditate on those questions.
At the same time, Silicon Valley was falling in love with Netflix’s business model too. She began getting calls from companies wanting Robbie’s help in setting up a similar business model, so she began helping them too. She realized there were things that were different about each of the organizations, but several principles are the same. For the next 10 years she worked with these businesses, using these principles. In that time, she was trying to put together a framework.
Basically, she would try and explain to people that there was a way to get recurring revenue, subscriptions, memberships, digital community, that works in every business and industry, no matter what the size.
It was hard to explain it, so she wrote it all down in her book. Essentially, she says her book became her 1 lb. business card. The book had an immense success.
Robbie truly feels that when it is done in the right way,

We Help Dustin Heiner of Master Passive Income Design A Team To Grow His Membership

Podcast cover
Read more
Dustin Heiner is a fellow podcaster and today we are helping him grow his high-ticket membership site. Back in February before the COVID-19 pandemic (when people could still travel) Shane traveled to California to attend a book-writing event that was going on during Social Media Marketing World. That is where Shane met today’s guest, Dustin Heiner of the Master Passive Income podcast about real estate investing.

During a dinner with other entrepreneurs Shane overheard Dustin Heiner saying he would never start a membership site. Well, we all know what happened next! Shane asked why and then the next hour and a half convincing Dustin to launch a membership site - which he did! Now just a few months later Dustin Heiner has 15 members paying him $189/month. Not bad for a guy who thought membership sites wouldn’t work! His next goal is to build a team to help his membership site grow  to 100 members and beyond.

In today’s episode Shane helps Dustin design a team that will help Dustin turn his new membership site into another source of passive income!

Dustin Heiner has built memberships before. He has helped others through all of the tech and every detail of memberships before. The biggest reason he was so hesitant this time around was his time. He has so many business and things going that he thought he had to have loads and loads of extra time to devote to coaching calls or member calls. I told him one story of Joe Nicoletti of LearnScrivenerFast who has a membership where all he does is set a timer and gets paid for it - that is when Dustin knew he could do this too!

Dustin has 30+ properties after he starting investing in properties back in 2005. He bought enough of them that he was able to quit his job because of that passive income. Back in 2014 he didn’t know a lot about online business so he used his time doing 1-on-1 help with his family and friends and allowing them to quit their jobs too. After doing that for a while he realized how much time that was taking up so he spent it building masterpassiveincome.com so he can teach his ideas to a wider audience at the same time. The whole site was devoted to helping people get buy and hold rental properties. He loves the term “just over broke” to talk about people’s jobs, hints the “j-o-b” in “just over broke.” In 2015 he began writing his first book and shortly after his podcast.

Let’s fast forward to 2020 when we met. Dustin Heiner and I met around February. Dustin was doing 1-on-1 coaching and had courses for his online business. He thought the task of doing group coaching or running a membership would be too time consuming. He already had the courses and a community - all he needed was a little bit of coaching.

In about of week of getting started Dustin has his entire membership launched and rolling! He charges a join fee of $599 for the first month and every month after is $189/month. Right now he has 15 members, even better he launched during the COVID-19 pandemic! The pandemic had just started and it was about a week and a half in. Dustin texted me freaked out because the plan was for him to launch and of course I told him to go ahead and do it anyways! Dustin really loved helping people and I could really feel that. His online business is a passion project where passion and profit come together. I remember telling him before he started his membership that he was limiting the reach and number of lives he could change. You could never teach everyone 1-on-1. You could never teach enough $5,000 courses. (not everybody can get into them). A membership creates a path, a more affordable option that you can scale responsibly and be able to serve the masses!

I remembers Dustin Heiner questioning if launching his membership during the pandemic was the right move. The thing about a membership that allowed him to do that was that in a membership you more or less open the doors rather than what typically think of a launch to be.

Membership Masters Podcast Preview – James Schramko of SuperFastBusiness on How to Build a Membership Site with Trials

Podcast cover
Read more
James Schramko is one of our own personal membership mentors. He helped us flesh out our own first online membership many moons ago, and is a true membership master himself in the subscription game. He is the founder of superfastbusiness.com, where he helps business owners make plenty more profit while working a whole lot less.

In this interview, we discuss the makings of a multi-million dollar membership, free trials, and how to make content areas your members will love.
What You’ll Learn:
The ascension model.
How to get people to pay you, retain members that you’ve already gotten.
“Inbox Relief“
How to set the culture.
Why you should use the membership model.
How to make recurring revenue.
You are worth it!
Why your membership is a supermarket.
How to work less and make more.
The ascension model.

James says the ascension model is the idea that someone comes across his website, get onto the email list, free training. Then, those people get to know you, listen to your podcast, buy your entry level program. From there they buy next one and so on.

He says this is just not reality. So, to explain this James uses this example:

Someone goes into a bar and order a whiskey. Generally, they are going to go with the bottom shelf or tap. Or, if they know a lot about whiskey, they are going to go for the top shelf that may cost a little more, but they are going to go straight to it. They don’t start on the cheap stuff.

If you start out at a high-ticket version first you can always work your way down.
Get people to pay you, retain members that you’ve already gotten.

It’s easier to keep customers than it is to get new customers. It doesn’t matter if it is $99/month or $1,000/month you have to build the next steps for everyone into your site. That’s where you drop them in. Don’t make your members go through unnecessary steps.

Typically the higher-tier client is the one that needs answers immediately. James actually has a place on his homepage that helps people find the product they need right now.

For the highest level he does make them speak to him before they can join. He does this because he does not want the wrong people in there. It’s not good for him, other members, and it’s definitely not good for them if they’re a bad fit.
“Inbox Relief“

The first thing that James made us do when he met him, was empty our inbox. Our inboxes were a mess at first! But, James told us that we would never be able to manage our membership if we don’t clear our inbox.

We took James’ inbox email course and we have been at zero in our inbox for the last several years.

If you can’t manage little things, you can’t manage big ones, like a membership.
Set the culture.

Our whole mission is to try to help families be able to quit their jobs and make an entire living online, to spend more time together.

When we first started, some members were growing so quickly that they could not keep up and their membership would overwhelm them. That is why now we set limits, we tell our members to start beta groups. Because, if you don’t start small and steady, you’re not going to be able to contain the culture.
Why the membership?

James says there are all kinds of different industry metrics where people say things like, “You’ll make $1 per email subscriber, per month.” If that were true, James would only make $7,000 per month. However, he says you can easily make 20x that amount.

James’ first success was selling software as an affiliate. He would help people who wanted to be able to build a website, back in 2006. There was no WordPress. He had to learn tools like DreamWeaver, be able to code. There were a couple tech software to help, but not many. However, he found some software that worked on a Windows PC, build your website on your computer, and then upload it to the web. Back then,

Today we are celebrating the amazing success of one of our community members, Kathy Martin. In today’s show you’ll learn how Kathy grew her membership from 15 members to nearly 300 members, how she talked her spouse into getting on board with her online business dream, and Shane’s three prolific strategies for growing a membership site to 500 members and beyond.

Memberships are not an overnight success. (3:30)
Take people through the beta path. (5:35)
What do you do when people around you are on the fast-track to success? (7:00)
The reason to sell community and not courses. (9:45)
How to grow into the next level of your membership. (18:50)
What things you are doing now? (25:50)
How To Utilize Your ‘Thank You’ pages (42:45)
Show Notes
Kathy Martin lives in Los Angeles, California, where she has been a special education math teacher for 13 years. Kathy has a membership where she sells middle school math resources to middle school math teachers. She has been an online entrepreneur for the last 4 years! Kathy was actually on the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast back in January of 2018. She had launched and had a few members. Back then it was a real struggle to get members.
Memberships are not an overnight success.
Kathy started in the summer of 2016 and spent from that summer to the end of the year building her membership. She wasn’t selling or anything like that. In 2017 she really started trying to do anything and everything - but nothing was really sticking. Then, she finally had someone believing in her and spend some money in her membership - which is exactly the positivity she needed! She realized if someone was willing to pay her $10 to get everything, she could get more people to too! Like we always say, if you can get 1 members you can get 100! Of all the billions of people in the world you can find people that need have a problem you can solve!

Kathy says her membership site was a “hot mess” in the beginning. She wasn’t happy with the way her site looked, she didn’t know who she was talking to. It took her a really long time to figure out what she wanted to write about and she wanted to target. It took her a while to figure out what her people needed. Yes, it took her a long time to figure out but she knows that is she would have started with 100 members in 2018 or 2019 - all of these members would have quit because she didn’t know what she was doing.
Take people through the beta path.
This is a great example of why we always take people through the beta path. Open it for 20 members - they are all going to quit. But you know what? you’re to learn. And then, you do it for 20 more people. Maybe half of them quit. Eventually when you get that third group in you’re like, “oh yeah, they all stayed this time for a month. We’re onto something here. Let’s keep hammering this nail.”
What do you do when people around you are on the fast-track to success?
We’ve known Kathy for a long time. She’s been to our lives events, met her in person, we love her journey so much that in 2019 at our Flip Your Life Live event we actually made her Member of the Year. The person of the Year in the Flip Your Life community is not the one that makes $1 million. It’s the person who won’t quit - the Kathy Martins! I’ll tell you what I’ve never seen somebody that won’t quit like Kathy Martin. While she was coming up through the community and she was building her business there were other people in her space that were succeeding. I would see other people in her space succeeding and I’ve always wondered what she thought when all of this was going down around her.

Kathy says there was a post in the community forums in our membership site when she first started from Jeanette Stein and she saved it on her phone - something she has never gotten. In the post she wrote her “road to 300.” Kathy began keeping track of every time she posted and just continued to follow her journey.

Membership Masters Podcast Preview – John Lee Dumas of Entrepreneurs On Fire Talks Building Successful Membership Site Communities

Podcast cover
Read more

John Lee Dumas is an amazing personal friend, known for his podcast, Entrepreneurs on Fire and his website eofire.com. John is not only a prolific podcaster, he is also a true membership master inside his membership community, Podcasters’ Paradise. In it, he teaches aspiring podcasters how to start, build, grow, and monetize podcasts of their own.
What You'll Learn:

Memberships do have legs, you can give yourself a raise every day. The ins and out of lifetime offers. There are pros and cons to everything you do in life. How to turn ‘making a living into ‘making a fortune.' How to keep your finger on the pulse. All things website!

Show Notes
In 2013, John was running along the bay in San Diego when he started thinking about his podcast and its’ success. But, he couldn’t quite put his finger on what was missing, things that he kept hearing from his audience. What are their:

Struggles? Obstacles? Challenges?

Some of them were saying they would love to start a podcast about ____. Their problem? They didn’t know where to start, what their first step should be.

At the time, John would send them different blog posts, YouTube videos, whatever he could find on the internet.

Every membership should pre-launch. You should never do anything until someone votes with their wallet.

Because, a survey where you can click a little button, that’s easy. But, when it comes time to put the money on it, suddenly that changes if they’re not serious.

People come for your courses, but they stay for the people. They stay for leadership. they stay for community.

Memberships do have legs, you can give yourself a raise every day.

If you do out and sell 5 members tomorrow at $100/month, you just gave yourself a $500 raise!

Each membership has its’ own journey. No matter what number of members you lose each month, you will replace them, you just have to keep moving.

When John started Podcasters’ Paradise, he was focused on just getting it out there. He wanted to make sure the concept was proven and people had voted with their wallets. Then, once he had that down, it was just about figuring everything out.

When membership officially launched, it was $500 for a lifestyle membership. No monthly recurring payment.

John’s fear at first was that people would just come for the trainings, tutorials, and templates. Every now and then, it would be about questions.

A few months in, John put up a surveys and questions that asked what peoples’ favorite part of Podcasters’ Paradise was.

The response was that it was videos, the templates, the webinars. Luckily, John left a spot for an ‘other’ option.

It only took one person responding other. It said, “came for the tutorials, stayed for the community.” Everybody voted for that one. The first 20 people voted the answers that John put in, but then everyone started answering that they stayed for the community, after that person answered.

Lifetime offers not only give you a great influx of cash, build an anchor. A core crew inside of your membership, those members will probably buy everything else you’re ever going to sell.

This reminds us of one of our members. Because she decided to make lifetime offers, she made $47,000 in one month. Then, the next two months, her community became more alive than ever!

John Lee Dumas experienced this too. For his members that did the monthly payments up to a 12-month payout until their lifetime membership, they get to month 8 or 9, and they begin counting down to that payout being done. John knows that a decent percentage of those people that pay every single month, if they didn’t something that they build up to they would have been out.

There are pros and cons to everything you do in life.

A couple years ago, John did shift to a fully monthly-recurring membership model. Now, if you want to get into his membership, you have 2 options:

$97 per month $997 per year.

Show Notes
Brad Barrett is only 1 of 2 people we’ve ever had on the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast three different times - and with good reason!

Brad was on our show for the first time back in December of 2014 - (which in Internet years that is at least 100 years ago) on episode 23 of the podcast! Brad is so OG that he was the first person we recorded with the 1-on-1 coaching format of the show you see and hear today!

Back then Brad had a website called RichmondSavers.com. He lives in Richmond, Virginia and he and his wife are known for saving money. They got their start by helping people use credit card reward points to travel the world! They had even put together a trip to Disney World for around $100 for their family of four and ended up getting up a lot of press from the New York Times! It changed everything for their website!

Brad ended up helping people 1-on-1 through hybrid of a real-world and online business! He would literally take his lunch from work to coach people over the phone.

Around December or January of that year he started thinking about how he could scale it. In early 2015 a free course was somewhat a novel idea. It wasn’t complicated just simply an email auto-responder. He had to put a scarcity around it simply because he didn’t know how many people he was going to be able to work with so he started a Facebook Group (which again was new at the time). Their first month they had 200 or 300 people signing up and only continued getting several hundreds of sign-ups as the months went on! They were able to scale it and since then they have put over 50,000 people through that course - insane!!

Back then we weren’t totally in on the membership model, we were subserved in the course model. A few months later is when we went all in on the membership model!

Brad told me a story years ago and it’s still one of my favorite things to tell people about online business. Memberships are what we teach but online business is what it’s all about. The internet and making money online and being able to reach out to anybody on earth is really how you can set your family free. I will never forget setting goals with Brad and him saying how he simply just wanted to pick his kids up off the school bus. I remember thinking, “man, if I can help that guy pick his kids up off the school bus that is an awesome goal.”

Brad came back on Episode 72 and he told me that he now gets to pick his kid off the school bus. To this day it still about makes me want to cry because it is just such a worthy goal. And, that’s really why we all do what we do with online business. It’s about that level of control and freedom.

Fast forward to today. Brad is co-host of an amazing podcast of his own called ChooseFI - with a huge following!
All about podcasting with Brad from the ChooseFI Podcast.

You never know where the online business is going to take you. You never know where one podcast appearance is going to take you. That’s where Brand found himself just a few years ago.

FL344 – We Help Brendan Grow His SEO Membership Site

Podcast cover
Read more
Brendan Hufford is a great friend of ours that we have known for years now, we got to know him by being in the same spaces online. Brendan, like us, was a teacher. Now he works with a search engine optimization (SEO) agency and is trying to grow his very own SEO membership site. He knows how to teach way better than people he sees online trying to teach SEO to beginners.

We know that this membership has huge potential and with our help we know Brendan will be back on the show soon with prolific on his membership site!

What You'll Learn:

Sometimes you should just quit. (7:15)
Why start a membership site? (11:00)
Don’t work for free. (21:00)
It’s all about access, but not access to you. (25:45)
How to create urgency the right way. (29:00)
How to do a challenge (37:10)
Show Notes
Brendan graduated college in 2006 and began piloting online class registrations for kids headed to college.

He decided at that point to become a teacher and climbed the latter through continual education for himself. Brendan earned a masters degree in educational administration. He says, “it turns out if you’re a really great teacher being the boss of teachers is a different job.” He became an assistant principal and after crunching some numbers and doing some research, he realized he was the lowest paid assistant principal in the state of Indiana at the time.

At that point he realized it was no longer worth the hassle and stress to stay in that position. He took a step back and decided to step down from being a principal to a teacher at a different school.

Everyone around him thought he was throwing away his career. However the relief taken off him allowed Brendan to sell his online businesses at the time. Those business consisted of selling a blog and an e-commerce company to two different people. He sold those because he knew they would never be the thing to fulfill his goals.

Brendan didn’t know what to do next but dove into SEO (search engine optimization). He was helping people for free, building case studies.

He hated the constant pressure of wanting to quit his job as a teacher. So, at the end of the school year he took a job at a web-design agency. he says his co-workers were called designers but were amazing at marketing.

After working there for a few years the pieces started to come together for Brendan’s career. All those God-given talents and experiences would come together for his own members and membership site!
Sometimes you should just quit.

It’s not about just having enough money sometimes it’s better to just quit. Sometimes you need to just get away from that job that it bringing you down all the time. Even if society says quitting that job would be the wrong move, but sometimes you should take that an indication to run towards that.

Who wants to be like the rest of society?

We heard something that we love from Elon Musk. He said he loves when people:

Tell him he’s wrong.
Prove that he’s wrong.
Show him the right way to do things.

He sees it as a gift from God because he doesn’t have to take the time to figure it out. Right after that he was talking about processes and he said:

If it’s taking too long for the process to work it’s probably the wrong process.

The difference between good and great is looking at something that’s wrong and scrapping it.

Do like Brendan, don’t stay in a rut! You are not throwing away your experiences, they will point you to next thing! The right thing.
Why start a membership site?

Brendan has his own website now, brendanhufford.com. He is a big believer that 99% of marketing is having something to talk about, so he writes his take on things there.

He began his site teaching SEO for the people that have tried SEO, are overwhelmed, have been pushed into using SEO. Those are the people that bought SEO tools, spent thousands of dollars on courses that didn’t help.

FL343 – We Help Jason Choose A Direction For His Investing Membership Site

Podcast cover
Read more
Jason Tremere lives in Eastern Canada where he has a background in the computer science field as a programmer. He did systems analysis and even became an IT auditor.

For the last 20 years or so Jason has done investing. When he was at one corporation he ran two investment clubs. He had about a dozen people in each one and they would meet weekly. In these clubs Jason would tell people what he looked for in a stock. Jason actually would have people put money in the market and they would watch it.

Jason has decided that since he can teach this in person, it’s time to teach people the same things online through his very own membership site!

What You'll Learn:

If you can teach in person, you can teach online. (6:30)
What it means to figure out your next step. (12:50)
You’ve got to be relatable. (17:45)
The price doesn’t really matter in the beginning. (19:00)
How often do you communicate with your members? (22:57)
How to let your content flow into other platforms. (25:00)
Why you don’t want to teach on your YouTube channel. (26:15)
How to do one thing until it’s done. (29:35)
A bigger market is not always better. (33:00)
Show Notes
Investing has really been a hobby for Jason for the last 20 years. He truly enjoyed the analytic side of watching investments, helping others learn to understand and love it too.
If you can teach in person, you can teach online.

For Jason the appeal of bringing his work online is because he is not currently doing any work in person, but he still continues to invest in the stock market for himself. Some days making thousands of dollars.

Jason is a master of all trades when it comes to investing. Not only does he invest in Canadian stock, but trades in the US too. And, then he invests in gold when the time is right for that market as well.

Jason’s online membership would look like a paid virtual version of his invest clubs.

He says that he could taking the people that are new to investing through the very foundational steps, taking them from mutual funds into ETFs. Then, he would take them into the active versions of investing that he likes to do.

That area of online business is weird because everyone has their own little way they like to invest. It’s so personality driven even though a lot of people try to teach the stock market in online business. It’s all about, “can you do it and can you teach me how to do it?”

It’s an easier nut to crack in the online business world if you know what you’re doing!
What it means to figure out your next step.

When we see someone with so many questions swimming around in their head, sometimes it’s easier to say, “here’s your next step.”

For Jason, this is probably what will work best:

He doesn’t want to be convincing people to join the stock market. He should start his avatar at helloing moving the mutual fund into the market. That is really appealing to a lot of people!

Here is what this does for Jason: It lets him be himself. He doesn’t have to do anything different he just has to tell his story.

Most people don’t want spread sheets, they want the story. The why you do it they way you do it. When they get in the membership and pay you money, then they’ll care about your spread sheets.
You’ve got to be relatable.

We are in a Facebook group with a bunch of very successful entrepreneurs. One day someone asked what was successful. Of course I said, “get 200 people to pay you $50/month and make $120,000. Low energy, you get time with your family, you get to serve people.”

I got hammered because this was all bro-marketers, Lamborghini driving gurus. They didn’t get contentment and happiness. It’s about real people and what they want.

It was awesome to hear what Jason said drew him in to us: it was simply seeing an add with our tee with a math equation of how many members it takes to make $60K/year.

Jason wasn’t looking for the 6-figure people.

Show Notes
Two years ago Josh and his wife found out they were pregnant. They were already starting to figure out ways to make more money. However, that pregnancy was a very hard one on his wife and she ended up having to leave her job as a Special Education Assistant.

So in turn Josh had to double-down on selling lesson plans, so that he could provide for his family. Josh began making new week-long lesson plans for a different picture book every day! These lesson plans were made for existing books, he basically made these lesson plans for specific books. He did this for 223 days straight!

These lesson plans help teachers out. If the teacher needed a lesson plan on this specific book, they could buy his plans and they had all the activities for the entire week.

It started out with books that Josh was using in class. Then, he moved onto 1st - 3rd grade popular books, because that’s where picture books are most needed.

The lesson plans started giving him $2/month, then $10/month. Now, for about the last year Josh is making over $1,000 each month!

It took a large volume of traffic to get there. At $2.75 or $3 a piece, it takes a lot of sales to get that number! To do this, he utilize SEO and how to drive searches to him.

Josh was listening to a lot of podcasts about being a “teacher-preneur” and while talking to other people, he kept hearing people recommendation the Flip Your Life community. He spent his summer listening to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast!
Take action!

We saw Josh in our community posting about how he was taking action.

Josh joined the Flip Your Life community and within two weeks he had his membership ready!

He took the extra time he had during the Coronavirus pandemic, since he was teaching from home.

His goal was to launch before the school year was out, so he did just that!

It took a choice. Josh made a choice. He took action. He woke up early. He stayed up late. He did the launch, that’s why things are happening!
Launch 101

Josh had a list of 1,200 people when he first launched. Since then, he has been trying to grow that list through Facebook ads and is now up to 1,600 people. That a healthy email list, especially for just launching!

When Josh launched he also had 3 beta members. If he can find 3 he can find 300! They are there, he has proven the concept.

Josh started out by simply sending an email that said, ‘hey, I’m thinking about starting a membership site, click here if you’re interested.’ He got around 100 people saying they were interested!

So he thought:

“Okay, we have 100 people interested.”
“Let’s start making this membership site.”
“Get an email sequence out saying, ‘hey, I’m starting a membership site for all of my lesson plans, not just buying lesson plans here or there. You get a community. We will be supporting each other.’”

Then, he emailed his list and let them know the doors were open!

We’re all here to learn and here’s where Josh could have improved:

When people hit the button saying they weren’t interested, he didn’t send the ‘hey my membership site is ope...

Quick Flip: We Help Michele Convert Her Email List Into Members

Michele Hayes is a Flip Your Life member, all the way from Melbourne, Australia! While she does not have many members in her education membership site just yet, she has good ones!

Michele had done a great job at getting an email list of nearly 2,000 people! However, she didn’t have many members. So the question begs, how does Michele convert that list into members? People are already paying attention, the goal now is to figure out a solid strategy for her to quickly grow to 100 members.
The 'lowdown' on Michele:

Lives in Melbourne, Australia
Has her own education membership site
Has gotten nearly 2,000 people on her email list
Show Notes
How to convert your email list into members.

Quantity is good, but quality is equally as important! Michele's biggest mountain? Converting her epic email list of nearly 2,000 people, into members!

Right now, Michele’s membership is tiered at $29, $49, and $69. One of the first things we need to do is clean that up a little bit. It is so much better when you start a membership not to have tiers. We ourselves have tried and experimented with tiers, but for your sanity and ease of getting your membership site grown, pick one price to promote. In Michele’s case, we think $49 a month is perfect to start out with, of course this can always change later!
Then, we have our timing. Every niche has a calendar. While Michele has a big following in Africa and Asia, she has low numbers in Australia and the US. So, Michele needs to limit her advertising to Australia. This is because each country has different school calendars, different ways of teaching, the things that Michele teaches will most-likely do best with other Australians. She can still market to the US, however her advertising is going to be quite a bit different.
Talk to your email list. Go get your members.
Keep teaching.

2020 has been nothing short of worrisome for several reasons. One being the effects that COVID-19 has on literally every aspect of our daily lives. One of those, being everyone’s jobs and livelihoods. We certainly worried about this when we first started hearing about shutdowns in the US. We, like everyone else, were confused and disoriented. We worried about our own jobs, our company. We even own an education company that sells resources to schools and teachers. Much to our surprise, that business actually grew during the pandemic. All because our messaging changed a little bit.

The goal is to find a way to grow, when you can grow, however you can do it tastefully.
You only need one product

You only need one product, you really only need one lead magnet. You just have to be able to present it a hundred different ways. That’s marketing.

Do a free trail, dollar trial, it’s all the same. All you have to do is use different promotions. Your only job is to make it relevant in different circumstances, getting your product in front of more people.

Michele has a product that the members she has, love!
Everybody is looking for a better day at work.

Create content around what you already know. People in your field want your knowledge to make their lives easier too. You are now the expert, so, teach your God-given experiences.

Michele already saw this in her prolific email list of nearly 2,000 people! We actually started our entire membership site with only 250 people on our email list.

Michele has a God-given gift to write. Knowing that, she started her consistent content by blogging for teachers. She gave different tips and tricks for inside the classroom, and people loved it! She began began lots of shares on different platforms.
Take the time to teach yourself tools.

Over the years our membership site has evolved, we’ve tried a ton of different programs. Programs that we had to take the time to learn. We say that to say this, you have to do your research. You have to take the time to learn platforms for yourself,

2020 has been nothing short of worrisome for several reasons. One being the effects that COVID-19 has on literally every aspect of our daily lives. We sent out an ad that said, ‘our stuff works online.’ We removed a part of our terms and conditions that said they couldn’t share it into a database. Just a slight change. We said, we’re going to open this up and we’re going to allow you to use it, in the way you use it now.

We were able to barely bend and not really pivot, which is exactly what Michele did. Even though COVID-19 closed schools, Michele kept teaching. In doing so, she got 4X as many people join her. This is because more teachers were having to learn a new way of teaching, as everyone taught remotely.

The goal is to find a way to grow, when you can grow, however you can do it tastefully.
Take the time to teach yourself tools.

Over the years our membership site has evolved, we’ve tried a ton of different programs. Programs that we had to take the time to learn.

One of our favorites by far, as you know, is Kajabi. The weekend that we set up my first sales funnel and first webpage on it, we realized this was the program that we needed.

Our whole goal going in was to find a platform that we could promote and use to teach people how to create a whole business in a week.

We say that to say this, you have to do your research. You have to take the time to learn platforms for yourself, so you can help others. Not everything, not every platform is going to work better for you and your members. But, it’s your job to invest the time to figure that out.

Jason and his wife Jody had started a pressure washing businesses in their town. After some time, they had grown that business to about $1M. However, in 2018 they sold that business.

The Geiman family had been listening to the Flipped Lifestyle Podcast for several years prior to 2018. In the fall of 2019, they came to our Flip Your Life Live event. Back then, they had about 2 members. We, of course told them to build their audience, hammer that nail over and over again.

For them, this meant taking the view off of the memberships. But, what built their 5-figure monthly income with 189 was: learning to gain trust, learning to build their audience, start getting testimonials and success stories.

Since then, the Geimans have been very active on YouTube, so that is where most of their online traffic has been coming in. This year, Jason has been uploading 4 YouTube videos a week, getting their channel around 200,000 views a month. Which is where now, they sell their memberships and get around 20-30 members a week, talk about being prolific!

This goes back to why we started our membership site to begin with. We wanted to not only provide for our families, but help others do the same! It’s about waking up everyday and throwing your stone into the pond.

For Jason, his online membership already changed the life of a local fireman. Can you imagine how many ripples and waves throwing his stone for that person, and all of his members looks like?

Who knows? The business that your members are creating to provide for their families may be passed down through generations. A generational gift that will continue to help families for years and bless...

Quick Flip – Better Than Happy, Jody Moore’s Amazing Podcast and Membership Success

Jody has come a long way since she was a Flip Your Life member! Not only has she changed her and her family's lives, by reaching more than 4,000 members in her life coaching membership site, she is changing lives of people everywhere! Not to mention her amazing success with, the Better Than Happy Podcast, her own podcast that she uses in correlation with her life coaching!

You don’t have to have a big launch.

A great way to start is exactly how Jody did! Go ahead and open up your site, lock people (beta members) into that introductory price. Jody also uses a semi-launch strategy. Which means she opens and closes the doors at different prices each month. These are almost like ‘mini launches,’ that help her keep urgency for her membership site. This also helps by keeping her from being overwhelmed by a massive influx of people all at one time.

This helps you assist and give your attention to those people that came in when you opened the flood gates this time, deal with that water. Then, next month you can do the same!
You can reach thousands of people.

Brick by brick your membership site will start scaling and getting wider. Then, you have thousands of people you can reach every day.

For Jody, her membership site has 4,000 members. How could she ever talk to that many people? It wouldn’t be possible to do that all at one time!

So, Jody uses:

A coaching model as a tool to help them solve their problems and achieve their goals. She uses membership calls, classes, every month on a certain topic. She makes these calls to where her members can either join live or replay it later.
Then, Jody utilizes live coaching calls or Q+As. She does this by bringing an a member through live call, coaches them, and everybody else gets to hear it. (This is very similar to our podcast interviews), This helps the members with the same issues all get their resolution at the same time!
Define your own success.

You can only base your success off of what you do. What looks like a member successfully following your teaching, may be different from what they do.

Sometimes when we work with people on our membership site, we tend to want to do hand-holding because again, it’s hard not to get emotionally invested in each step of their journeys. But, a lot of times when we let members have their own journeys, mistakes, and experiences, people become much more successful.

You don’t want to rob people of the joy of solving their own problem. You want to give people direction, not instruction.

Do not give out the step-by-step instruction. Give a strategy, allow your members to find their solution.
There is no cap to your potential.

Growing up, most of us are told that you work your tail off through college, for a job that had a cap. For us, we hit a point where our floor, because of our memberships, was everybody else’s ceiling.

It took us a few years to get through that launch world where if you don’t get 1000 members or $100K when you launch, then you’re not a success.

But, through a membership, we have the mindset of giving ourself raises every day! Maybe get one more member every day, that will work, right?

That is how we developed our philosophy of:

Consistent
Relentless
Prolific

If we can pick one thing that we do consistently, which for us is our podcast. We share the podcast every day and write the email to our list every day.

We relentlessly follow up with every possible person that slightly raises their hand up into the sky that says ‘I’m paying attention to you.’ Good things are going to happen, because I keep doing that over and over and over again. Then, it’s just a matter of what tools you’re using to keep that going, as everything continues growing.

We were on a member call a couple of weeks ago. One of our members said, 'hey, someone was talking about you all the other day.' So, we looked up this podcast. It was the Better Than Happy Podcast with Jody Moore. The name sounded familiar. When we listened to this episode that we were mentioned in, and she was just going on about her membership and how she learned about them from us! So, of course we had to talk to her!

Jody is a great example of how you really can change your life and others, through the membership model. The membership model allows more people access to Jody's life coaching, and allows her to help more people at the same time. More than 4,000 members, if we're getting technical. But, those members don't even know that she has that big of a following, because her membership, like ours, allows her the ability and freedom to devote her attention where she is needed most.

You don’t have to have a big launch.

A great way to start is exactly how Jody did! Go ahead and open up your site, lock people (beta members) into that introductory price.

Jody also uses a semi-launch strategy. Which means she opens and closes the doors at different prices each month. Your membership site can evolve as you do!

Curated content
Community
Coaching

Those are the pillars of a successful membership site.

Like Jody, her membership site structure changed early on the beginning. For her, a community was not exactly best for her model. And, that’s okay!

This brings us to great point - forums or a Facebook group do not make up a community. A football game is a community event. You don’t have to talk to everybody there, you’re just watching the game.

You will constantly reinvent yourself and your membership as you both grow. There will be new ways to market yourself, you have to fall in love with the process and progress!
Feeling the weight of leading your members.

Try to make the membership site feel close and connected for your members.

Quick Flip: Jill Starts A Social Media Marketing Online Membership

Podcast cover
Read more
One thing defines your membership's message: finding people that vote with their wallet and then finding continuing to find more people like them. Most importantly: get people to join you and getting it off the ground.

Don’t hold yourself back! You are more ready than you think. The curse of knowledge in the membership world makes us want to dump everything we’ve ever learned about out field into the memberships, while it’s happening. Sometimes, people make the mistake of thinking ‘okay, well I don’t have what in my mind is the perfect model already laid out. Then, people aren’t going to want to join it.’
The 'lowdown' on Jill Fox:

Lives in Orange County, CA
Owner of Fox Social Media
Working to start membership site based on helping small business owners and solopreneurs learn simple marketing strategies to grow their businesses and increase sales.

Show Notes
How many businesses need social marketing right now? All of them!

There are a couple things about businesses like this when you transition into the membership model. You have to careful with what kind of content you’re including. (Zero in that content in to something that is evergreen). For instance, one problem is the constant changing of the platform you’re using. If facebook changes the way you set up a Facebook page, your content is no longer valid. You have to be very careful how much of that you focus on going forward.

Utilize a launch strategy. For Jill, we said her’s looks like this:

Change your branding, get all that set.
Focus the first month or two on trying to tighten up your message enough for a list. For Jill, the best lead magnet is walking people through how to set up or optimize their business Facebook page. Most people have access to this, most people want to come in at.
The lead magnet is to a free trial, it is not necessarily to an opt-in. That opt-in would trigger your emails to follow-up.
Reach out to people organically, reach out to people through YouTube, start building hype for your membership.
Pick a day and open your site.
Do a personal reach-out to those beta members. Let them put their money where their mouth is. Discount your launch to that beta group to get a few people in there.

Don’t dabble - set big goals.  Use what we call Membership Math. Jill wanted to have $100K. However, we talked her into setting her sights on $250K. In Orange County, $100K pays for half her bills. We want her to not only be able to pay for everything with her membership site. We want her to make that full $200K, plus more. Of course, that doesn’t mean we want her to stop there! Membership Math is calculating how many members it will take to afford whatever you want. Jill only needs 163 members, of all the people on planet earth, to meet her goal.

Members are not going to pay you forever - and that’s okay. Back to where we said Jill only needs 163 people out of all the humans on earth. There is marketing, there is churn. But, that is a very small percentage of people. You will get more members!

Here’s our idea for Jill:

Start a beta group with 20 people at $50 a month. Learn from them!
As you’re doing some content marketing on the side of that, you’re building your audience, build that list up again.
Do another beta round of about 20 people at $50/month.
Have a goal for the next year to have 163 people at at least $97 per month. That is $250K/year.

Email marketing 101. The first thing you have to do is tell people who you are and what you do. You have to tell them all about you and your background. Indoctrinate them into what you’re doing. The second thing you want to do, at the same time, is deliver what you promised.

In Jill’s case, when her beta members sign up for her trial, they would get 2 emails:

Telling everyone your story, what you do, why you’re the expert, here’s where they can connect with you.

FL338 – We Help Jill Transition From An Agency Model To An Online Membership

The most important part of your membership: getting people to join you and getting it off the ground. Find people that vote with their wallet and then find more people like that. It defines your message, it defines your membership.

This is some of the advice we gave Jill Fox. Jill wants to add to her agency business and work a membership site in. Jill says through her agency, she often gets asked how to market small business, from people that can't afford a full agency service and need to do it themselves. So, she decided to transition some of her knowledge into a membership site, like ours!

If facebook changes the way you set up a Facebook page, your content is no longer valid. You have to be very careful how much of that you focus on going forward.

You really want to shift your focus to the tactical stuff, the Q&As, the member calls, those are more real-time and what’s happening now. The membership is not evergreen. The membership is a living, breathing, growing community with a leader. And, that’s you how build a membership site. That’s how you create forever customers. Your content is necessary because that’s what draws them in. It’s nice to say, I’ll help you ____,’ you just have to be mindful of how evergreen your content is. For Jill’s case, she really has to think about this as she continues to build, as she is dealing with social media. Be ready to have a plan in place to update things and be aware of changes.

Don’t hold yourself back! You are more ready than you think. Jill did not feel ready because she didn’t know how to set up a page. The people she knew that had, did not know how to create them completely, or even sometimes just not well. Jill had 18 courses ready to go, but wanted to prepare more before she started her site. Jill was talking to people that want her help, she simply needed to start small and with what she already had! The curse of knowledge in the membership world makes us want to dump everything we’ve ever learned about out field into the memberships, while it’s happening. Your audience does not know your end goal. They don’t know what Jill’s perfect membership looks like. Sometimes, people make the mistake of thinking ‘okay, well I don’t have what in my mind is the perfect model already laid out. Then, people aren’t going to want to join it.’

Start a beta group. Go ahead and reach out to those people who are asking you for your service now, tell them your membership site is ready. You are already the expert, get the beginners in. What you will find is the beginners only need about 10% of what you know for the next 6 months. It is going to take your members about 6 months to a year to catch up to the first step with you. Answer the question for yourself: ‘if all this did for these people was help them _.’ People will have questions for things you didn’t think of,

Quick Flip – Allison Builds Her Membership Site

Podcast cover
Read more
Every membership site starts with an idea, even ours. For our friend Allison Jenks, she first needed to clarify her goals. Once we helped her with that, she is making those needed moves into building a stable income online - clarifying her goals, documenting what she does, all to help her and her soon-to-be online members make an income through her online membership site.

Start with what you’ve got. For Allison, she has plenty of viable members already and did not fully realize it. Not only does she have clients or even other HMUAs she brushes shoulders with, she is a blogger, has a social media presence, she has all the tools at hand to start getting her site up and running.

For people like Allison, getting started is the hardest part. You can truly make a passive income off your God-given talents and skill-set. You simply have to clarify your goals. Once you have that down, you are ready to start getting your own online membership site.

People pay for needs, not wants. Focus on the people that have a need for your idea. In Allison’s case, this meant narrowing her focus on the value she brings to any kind of event. Not only do people need hair and makeup for their big day, but speakers, graduates, conference attendees. There is a need to present yourself at your best, therefore Allison’s services are needed, not simply wanted.

Tell your members about your own tricks-of-the-trade, your experiences. These tools are valuable to your members, just like they are to you!

Document what you do. You want to draw in people who want to learn from you on how you’ve built a business. People may already think they have the talents you have and that may be true. However, their next steps into how to run or operate a similar business, coil drive them to your online membership site.

If we were to sit down and have tea while you took 30 minutes to tell me everything you do, what would that be? Make a bulleted list from A to Z of all the how, what, where, who, and why’s in your business. For your membership site, break this down into modules. For Allison, Module 1: her hair + makeup tips and tricks of the trade. Module 2 is talking about how to run a full-fledge hair + makeup business. Allison’s 3rd Module is outline of networking, and how she actually makes sure she gets gigs. Module 4 for her is simply do a couple member calls for her online membership site community each month.

“It ain’t gotta be perfect.” It just has to be done. If you go in with a perfectionist mindset, it can turn into procrastination real quick. Perfection is the enemy.

Growth is not instant. Starting your own online membership site can be overwhelming, but you are not alone in feeling that! You do not even have to have an existing business, just an idea to get started. People want to not only learn from you, rally around and support you in your online membership site pursuits! All that’s left to do is take that first step and just like we did with Allison, we can help you!
