7 types of rest (follow up on 7 dimensions of wellness from ep. 58)
https://advice.shinetext.com/articles/the-7-types-of-rest-you-need-to-actually-feel-recharged/
Once you’ve figured out the type of rest you need, it’s time to adapt your rest to fit that specific need.
Physical Rest - cant stay awake, coffee not helping
Mental Rest - re-reading the same sentence 10x and still not retaining it!
Social Rest - balance draining interactions with restorative ones
Creative Rest - always making or doing, try being in nature or surrounding yourself with inspiration
Emotional Rest - snapping for no reason? Activated? Crying? Emotional eating? You are in need of emotional rest.
Spiritual Rest - 6th house
Sensory Rest - eyes feel strained, ears ringing

00:19:00 Mental Moment with Money
What is a trigger?
Triggers are people, words, opinions, situations, or environmental situations that provoke an intense and excessive emotional reaction within us. Common emotions that we experience while being triggered include anger, rage, sadness, and fear. Virtually anything can trigger us, a trigger depends on the experience.
https://lonerwolf.com/emotional-triggers/

Why do we get triggered?
2 main reasons
Trauma –We get triggered when we see, hear, taste, touch, or smell something that reminds us of the previous traumatic circumstance. For example, a rape victim might be triggered when they see a person with a beard bc their attacker had a beard. An adult who never fit in as a child may feel triggered when seeing groups of people have fun.

Ego preservation – The ego is the sense of self or “I” we carry around. When our egos are challenged or hurt by others, we are prone to becoming triggered – immediately.

Type A or B?
Often used as holistic personality descriptors, these personality typologies refer specifically to how we respond to stress.

Type A - Type A achievement for achievement sake. Leadership is important to type A’s. They are self driven.
Type B - People with Type B personality by definition generally live at a lower stress level and typically work steadily, enjoying achievement but not becoming stressed when they are not achieved.
Type C - People with type C personality have difficulty expressing emotion and tends to suppress emotions, particularly negative ones such as anger. This means such individual also display 'pathological niceness,'
Medical journals even use type D for “distressed” (has all of the worry of type a, with all of the lack of time management of type B) and type E, for someone who fits into none of the above categories.

Rock away anxiety with these helpful rocks.
Amethyst - Natural amethyst is known for its calming and relaxing properties, making it one of the best, if not the number one crystal for managing stress. You can place the crystal under your pillow or in your bedroom to help calm and soothe your energy if anxiety keeps you up at night

Sodalite - Often referred to as “the Stone of Peace," Sodalite is said to help calm the mind and ease panic attacks. If you've been feeling anxious in any way, tuck this royal blue beauty in your purse or pocket, as it carries a comforting energy that is helpful in preventing us from becoming overly wound up and emotional. Having trouble expressing yourself? Sodalite is also believed to stimulate self-confidence and aid in self-expression, so keep it close any time you're feeling nervous about sharing your thoughts and ideas with others.

Howlite - Lack of sleep is one of the largest contributing factors to feeling stressed. If you’re experiencing problems falling asleep at night, try tucking a white Howlite under your pillow, as it’s calming energy is believed to help with insomnia especially when the root cause is an overactive mind.

Music for Melancholy
These are the albums and artists that have been helping me through this rough patch.
Mood has such an impact on our interpersonal relationships (which is why I tend to isolate) and music has such an impact on our mood. A study published in the Journal of affective disorders in 1995 by Bouhuys et al explored this. They played sad songs for 24 people who did not suffer from any kind of mood disorder and 12 (thats HALF) showed substantial differences in experienced depression after listening to the sad music. They perceived more rejection from “neutral” faces and rated faces overall more sad/angry, perceiving this sadness/anger as directed at them. They also perceived less invitation and happiness in faces than they had before listening to the music.

Healing triggers: Dr. Money’s STRAW method
Triggers are not the same as things that cause negative emotional responses
NER - This makes me feel emotions I dont want to feel
Trigger - This makes me feel overwhelming emotions i dont have the capacity to handle
NER - I feel bad, but I can think of something that will make me feel better
Trigger - I feel bad and Ive lost all sense of what I need
NER - I feel bad and I know what caused it
Trigger - Idk what I feel and Im so thrown off I dont know what caused this
See what they are! - [Listen to ep 22] whip out ur journal and write down things that elicit overwhelming emotional responses
Track the origin - Triggers collapse space and time. Where did this one originate? Can u think of the earliest traumatic experience you had related to that thing?
Reprogram/undo - If-then thinking, how did this trigger generalize? Tell yourself truths about the negative thoughts. Can you think of things u can use to manage this trigger?
Act as If - do with support! If this wasnt a trigger, I would….
Work with Therapist/Allied Professional - you need someone sensitive to trauma processes to help ground you so that you are not retraumatized.

QueerWOC of the Week: 00:06:53
Alice Wu, producer, writer and director of “The Half of It”. @ThatAliceWu
Not every love story is a romance. The Half of It. The film follows Chinese high schooler, Ellie Chu, who lives in the fictional white town of Squahamish with her father. She chooses to help a boy win her crush, local hottie Aster Flores, and teen hearts get broken—a classic teenage rom-com, but with a queer twist.
“If you dont have the word for something, how could you think that you are that thing?”
The Half of It has been nominated for the Gotham Independent Film Award for Breakthrough Director, and at 50 years young this is also a huzzah that our wildest queer dreams can come true at any age!
Her signoff - Go queer nerdy asians!

Mental Moment with Money 00:28:33 (NIKEETA HAS A JINGLE!!!!)
Triggers have become part of our everyday vocabulary as trauma becomes more of a social norm to speak about, but the other side of that polyvagal theory hasnt gotten nearly enough shine - glimmers. Glimmers are essentially the opposite of triggers!
If a trigger brings us into a survival state, and is also known as a cue of danger,, glimmers are what bring us back into our window of tolerance and safety
Glimmers are any experience, person, place, or resource that creates the possibility of safe connection with ourselves, others, or the environment

Here are some guiding questions to begin to identify Glimmers:
What people, places, feelings, smells, sensations glimmer me back into feeling safe and connected?
What brings up happy memories for me? Is there a smell, book, or activity that instantly reminds me of good days?
What are my safety survival responses? Meaning when I have completely had it, what to i do/where do i go/who do i run to?
What glimmers are most effective when I am in a survival state? Which glimmers bring me back to center from fight? Flight? Freeze?
What do my different states feel like in my body? How do I know a glimmer is kicking in and I feel safe?
What does a glimmer feel like, what sensations does it bring up, what feelings?
Share your glimmers with us!

Hello Dr. Money and Nikeeta,
I match with cute girls all the time but I have no idea what to do after that. I’ve talked to a few of them for a week or two but it never goes anywhere. I don’t understand how people make connections on dating apps. I’m the kind of person that likes to look people in the eyes, I’m a good judge of character that way. I don’t know how to do that through messaging. Am I overthinking it? I really want to meet new people. I would appreciate any wisdom y’all can share.

QueerWOC of the Week: 00:06:57
Lucy Diggs Slowe 1885-1937 (Black Women Radicals) and Mary Burrill
Lucy Diggs Slowe was, among other firsts, the first dean of women at Howard University, the first principal of the first black junior high school in Washington and a founder of Alpha Kappa Alpha, the first sorority established by African American women.
Her partner of 20 years, Mary Burrill, was an English teacher and a playwright well respected by writers of the Harlem Renaissance. The plays she wrote were mostly dramas about the cultural activities of the Black elite during the 1920s. She was the play director of the high school play for 30 years at Dunbar High School - one of the leading Black academic schools in the country

How do I stay in solidarity with Palestine on campus? Nikeeta gives 4 suggestions for engaging political work at universities.

1) Find out what sort of political organizing is already happening on your campus and how receptive students have been, and how engaged students are in the work on the campus are. 2) The second thing is connecting to and finding others that feel the same way you do about the issue.
3) Students have been playing a very important key role in Boycott, Divestment Sanctions (BDS) movement in pushing their universities to cut ties with Israel. Look at Students for Justice in Palestine.
4) Mondoweiss which is a progressive media outlet that covers issues related to the fight against Israeli occupation, 2016 article a group of Italian students doing BDS organizing. It would be good to find out if there are students at nearby universities who you could talk to and link up with.

Reenergize those Resolutions!: 4 tips to keep your 2020 goals on track
Set learning or change goals instead of achievement goals
Pretty well known 1979 Harvard study of MBA students - those with learning oriented goals had higher GPAs on average and reported a better experience overall in their programs
Generally, we feel more positively about learning or acquiring than we do about thresholds (why you think we love a good YouTube tutorial so much?)
Achievement - I want to pass my licensure exam; Learning - I want to study 3 therapeutic theories outside of the one I love and use regularly
Achievement - I want my locs to reach mid back this year; Learning - I want to figure out which oil helps my locs retain moisture
Achievement - I want to read one book a month; Learning - I want to discover my favorite Toni Morrison novel this year
Make it a challenge rather than a threat
Threat - I need to practice for my defense or I will fail it; Challenge - I need to prepare to have the type of defense I want
Threat - I need to lose weight or I will get diabetes and have a heart attack; Challenge - I want to find healthy habits that will support my wellbeing
Make it meaningful
Tie it to a personal value, bc then its internalized
Write it down!
Writing encourages better memory recall bc it involves neuro senors and fine motor skills. Activates more parts of our brain
Writing is grounding!
Writing is manifesting
That same Harvard study found that those who wrote their goals down out earned their peers by 84%. This is obviously correlation, not causation, but shiiiiiit! I believe in the power of manifesting!
Word 00:47:51
Its on sight for Butigege! Nikketa breaks down important differences between the Bernie and Warren campaigns. She highlights 3 tensions between the two candidates. Bernie needs Nikeeta!

Accountability
http://bcrw.barnard.edu/building-accountable-communities/
Inspired by Mia Migus. Accountability has become almost a buzz-word in contemporary social movements. What does it mean? How do we work toward it?

4 components of accountability by Mariame Kaba:
Apology - you may need to apologize more than once! Remember, apologizing is not about you it is about the person/s you harmed/hurt.
Repair - take action! Follow through on what they said they needed from you when you apologized.
Restore- Fumbling towards Repair Workbook by Kaba and Shira Hassan to learn about accountability within community and Care Work by Leah Lakshmi to learn about emotional intelligence
Changed Behavior - Dont do it again! Sure, but also, build your own support network to ensure you won’t do it again. This is YOUR responsibility.

How to “break up” with a friend

-Define the relationship
