Rank #1: Media Roots Radio - Interview with Trevor Paglen, Experimental Geographer, Artist & Author.
MEDIA ROOTS- Trevor Paglen's work deliberately blurs the lines between science, contemporary art, journalism, and other disciplines to construct unfamiliar, yet meticulously researched ways to see and interpret the world around us.Paglen’s visual work has been exhibited at several art museums worldwide and his writing and art have been published in major publications including The New York Times, Wired, Vanity Fair and Newsweek. Paglen holds a B.A. from UC Berkeley, an M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a Ph.D. in Geography from UC Berkeley, where he remains an affiliated researcher. In the 90s, Paglen was a member of a locally revered bay area noise/experimental project called Noise Gate, and co-ran an infamous underground venue in downtown Oakland called the Sandcrawler. His electronic music background hugely inspired co-host Robbie Martin in his own musical evolution.Paglen is also the author of several books: Torture Taxi, the first book to comprehensively cover the CIA's extraordinary rendition program; I Could Tell You But Then You Would Have to be Destroyed by Me, a book looking at the world of black projects through unit patches and memorabilia created for top-secret programs; and Blank Spots on the Map: The Dark Geography of the Pentagon's Secret World, a book that gives a broader look at secrecy in the United States.http://www.mediaroots.org/interview-with-experimental-geographer-artist-trevor-paglen.php http://www.MediaRoots.org

Rank #1: 2257 - The President’s Parnas Panic w/ Digby & Judy Gold.
Happy Friday! Digby and Judy Gold join Sam and the MR Crew to discuss the top stories of the week, including the Lev Parnas revelations, impeachment heads to the Senate, and the breach of the Sanders/Warren non-aggression pact. Starting with *The Story*: Sam and Digby agree that the Sanders and Warren story is new, but it certainly does not deserve the amount of coverage provided by the media. Consider the fact that we were on the brink of war last week, and the president's impeachment trial will begin next week in the Senate. Meanwhile, the revelations from Lev Parnas' document dump shed new light on the Ukraine scandal and the interactions between Giuliani and his Ukrainian oligarch contacts. Digby and Sam go through all the players and key figures involved in the Ukraine quid-pro-quo. Finally, as impeachment moves to the Senate, Digby and Sam consider the limited press access permitted by Mitch McConnell and why Chuck Schumer isn't railing against the leader's decision. Then, Judy Gold joins Sam and asks how the hell can Ken Starr and Alan Dershowitz possibly be working for the White House in 2020? Judy is at the end of her rope--Democrats need to win the White House back this fall. She's had enough of these assholes in the GOP. They conclude their conversation considering the reasons for having children. And in the Fun Half: the Saga of American Action Network's "Stacy," John from San Antonio wonders if Elizabeth Warren is angling for a Biden VP spot, low information voters and Chris Hayes' classic TNR piece from 2004, Devin Nunes tries out a dozen lies about his relationship with Lev Parnas, while Donald Trump and Rudy are in the same boat, and if they're going down, they're going down together. Rank #1: The CDC’s Culture of Fear.
In our continuing series honoring whistleblowers, Ralph welcomes winner of the Joe A. Calloway Award for Civic Courage, Dr. George Luber, former head of the Centers for Disease Control’s Climate Health program, who despite pressure from the newly-minted Trump Administration, blew the whistle after refusing to cancel a convention on how the climate crisis was affecting public health. George Luber is an epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. His research interests include the health impacts of environmental change and biodiversity loss, harmful algal blooms, and the health effects of climate change. Dr. Luber headed the CDC’s climate health program until it was eliminated in 2018 by the Trump White House. The nation’s premier health protection agency continues to retaliate against him for speaking out on the climate crisis and its public health effects. He has since filed for whistleblower status with the U.S. Office of Special Counsel and has just received the Joe A. Calloway Award for Civic Courage. “The most frightening thing, actually, is that somebody would make a decision like this in anticipating the potential blowback from the [Trump] Administration. That to me is frightening, because it’s the most insidious form of power. And when you can get people to do things for you without even asking them, that I think is the most frightening thing. To get people to act on your behalf in ways that they normally wouldn’t merely out of fear of what you might do.” Dr. George Luber, winner of the Joe A. Calloway Award for Civic Courage “I was escorted by armed guards when I needed to get some books out of my office [at the CDC]. I had an armed escort and they asked me to come at 11:00am – the height of the day when everybody is around intending to humiliate me – and marched me through our large ten story office building with a large armed guard behind me that even followed me to the bathroom.” Dr. George Luber, winner of the Joe A. Calloway Award for Civic Courage RALPH NADER RADIO HOUR EP 296 TRANSCRIPT (Right click to download)
