TREK IT OUT

by Jake Morgan

Picard FREE to Non-Paying Subscribers

Dig this. You’re kicking it at home with diddly-squat to do. You’ve heard about this rad show called Star Trek: Picard. Sounds groovy, but you don’t want to pony up the cabbage to peep it. Good news buck-a-roo, now you can watch it on the bubble!

Now that all of that outdated vernacular is out of the way, here’s what we’re trying to say - the entire first season of Star Trek: Picard is FREE! Entertainment Weekly reports Star Trek: Picard will still require that you sign-up for the free CBS streaming service, but you will gain access to Trek’s newest offering by entering the discount code “GIFT”.

Sir Patrick Stewart announced the giveaway on his Instagram account, saying “It's felt good to bring Picard back. Our #StarTrekPicard season finale is Thursday, and starting today until 4/23, you can watch for free on @CBSAllAccess in the US with the code: GIFT. Link in bio to sign up. I can't wait to reunite with our cast and crew for Season 2.”

Discovery Season 3 Delay

When is “Star Trek: Discovery” season 3 going to start? Well, it may not be as soon as we originally thought.

Back in January, Heather Kadin suggested to Trekcore that Discovery Season 3 could be released as early as May 2020, but amid the Covid-19 pandemic, it looks like the series is facing delays. The holdup was first hinted at during an Instagram live-chat with Discovery Star Wilson Cruz. According to comicbook.com, fellow Co-star Anthony Rapp noted in the comment section that the post-production work was being done from home - and the process was taking a bit more time than expected. On March 18th, Cruz seconded Rapp’s sentiments, tweeting ”I didn’t see @albinokid’s comment this morning on #InstagramLive... but see for yourself in regards to #startrekdiscovery season 3. It’s coming, but it may be a little longer than we thought... It’s coming though!

You can rest assured, we’ll be keeping a close eye out for release dates, so stayed tuned!

Destination Star Trek Germany Delayed

Discovery season 3’s release date isn’t the only Star Trek being delayed due to Covid-19. One of Trek’s biggest conventions - Destination Star Trek Germany - is being pushed back as well. In a release, the Destination Star Trek Germany team said in part “Our main concern is the health, safety and wellbeing of our participants, guest stars and everyone who is part of the DST family. For this reason, we have decided to postpone the event until October 9th to 11th, 2020, we hope that the virus will not be a problem until then and that we can all beam into the world of Star Trek and celebrate together! :-)

The convention, which was set to take place in early May, will remain at the same location. From the release “The venue in Dortmund is the same and all tickets already purchased remain valid for the new dates. If you are unable to attend the new dates, please contact us.

Stewart and Shatner Spread Cheer

In times of great stress, we look to our leaders for guidance and direction; calmness and support...Thank goodness we have our heroic Captain’s - Kirk and Picard!

Captain Kirk did something very William Shatner, he TWEETED. Well, Shatner tweeted, but he tweeted in the form of a Captains log. Starting on March 18th, the logs beganCaptain’s Log: Stardate 1 of self imposed isolation. After having arrived at Planet Home, I was warmly greeted by Emissaries Espresso & Macchiato. I look forward to my planned respite from my normal duties. Kirk out.”. Shatner has done a log everyday since, including a supplemental, and we hope he continues until his 14 day isolation is complete

Not to be outdone, Sir Patrick Stewart ALSO took to social media in an effort to distract and entertain. On March 21st, Sir Patrick tweeted a video of himself reciting Shakespeare's Sonnet 116. It was a beautiful performance, and received its due attention - which Stewart recognized. “I was delighted by the response to yesterday's posting of Shakespeare's Sonnet 116, and it has led me to undertake what follows…” What followed was Stewart reciting Sonnets 1 - and the next day Sonnet 2 - with the hashtag “ASonnetADay”. There was no post for Tuesday March 24th at the time of this writing, but we are hopeful and confident Sonnet 3 is on the way!

Picard Cast and Crew Entertain During Quarantine

Heading over to Instagram, Picard showrunner and Pulitzer Prize winning author Michael Chabon appealed to audiences young and old by reciting something different - children’s books! Chabon started the Read-along with a book he authored - “The Astonishing Secret of Awesome Man”. The videos continued with “Strega Nona Meets Her Match” by Tomie dePaola and have continued every day since! The delivery is gentle and excited, and a wonderful activity to share with your children - or even to watch by yourself!

Also on Instagram, fellow Picard-ian - Santiago Cabrera - posted a video in which he, and his Ukelele, perform a rendition of Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds”. It’s another beautiful offering from a Star Trek alum.  And his messages to us - “Not to worry...AND Stay inside” - are certainly worth taking to heart! Trek out our show notes for links.

Second Summer Ship Stream

This week on Twitch, Ambassador Kael hosted Christian Griffith, a Cryptic test analyst, drawing his interpretation of a Risian Science Vessel. This was the second of four weekly streams being presented by Cryptic in the design of the upcoming Summer Event prize ship. Christian worked with feedback from Lead Ship and UI Artist Thomas Marrone this week. Unlike last week’s stream featuring Nick Duguid at work on a 3-D model, Christian put pen to paper to sketch his concept. While hitting on some of the same nautically inspired ideas as Nick’s design, Christian took his drawing in a very different direction. After all four weeks of concept designs are completed, Cryptic will open up a voting contest to players. The winning design will be sent to Concept Artist Hector Ortiz for final drawing, and will then become the new Summer Event Ship for 2020. If you’d like to watch the recorded stream with Kael, Christian, and Thomas, Trek out the Twitch link in our show notes.

Duty Officer Pack Changes

Along with a 30% off sale and a Promotion Pack weekend recently, Cryptic announced a number of changes to Duty Officer packs for PC players. For starters, a new Duty Officer Pack Bundle has been added to the C-Store for 1000 Zen. The bundle includes one of each Duty Officer Pack: Fleet, Delta, Gamma and Romulan. The Reinforcement Duty Officer Pack has been retired, though its Tuffli Freighter reward has been moved to the Gamma Pack. Each of the four remaining packs will now include an additional Uncommon officer and an additional Rare officer. The 4x Fleet Ship Modules formerly available as a chance reward from the Delta Pack have been removed, and the odds of a bonus trait reward in that pack have increased. Individually, the four Duty Officer Packs will have a regular C-Store price of 300 Zen.

Purchase T1-T4 Ships with Dilithium!

Duty officers weren't the only adjustments made by the STO team. Cryptic announced Tuesday that Tier I, II, III, and IV ships will be purchasable for Dilithium. Those lower tier ships currently available to purchase via the ship vendor for dilithium will have prices significantly slashed, while Tier I through IV ships in the Zen store will be offered for Dilithium. For a closer look at the numbers, the current price of a Tier I T’Liss Light Warbird is currently 4,250 dilithium from the ship vendor. The new price? 1000 Dilithium. A Tier I T’Varo light Warbird is on the Z-store for 500 Zen. Converting that at the current rate of 404 Dilithium per zen, that’s 202 THOUSAND Dilithium. After the change drops later this week on PC, the new cost will be 15 THOUSAND Dilithium.

But it isn’t ALL good news. At the time of release, which is due out on console April 9th, the Tier I Prototype Light Cruiser Explorer will not be made available for dilithium - that’s the Shenzou for anyone keeping score. Also, any ship purchased via dilithium after the change will not be account unlock - it’s per character only.

EVENTS

Coming up for the weekend of April 9th through April 13th Star Trek Online will have a Bonus Dilithium Weekend. During that weekend, players will receive bonus 100% extra Dilithium Ore from mining and 50% extra from other content that rewards Dilithium Ore. It’s a great time to stock up on Dilithium for Phoenix boxes or the Zen Exchange. But if you’re looking to exchange Dilithium for Zen, you might want to keep an eye on the exchange rate. It’s usually not at its best return during these events.

PRIORITY ONE ARMADA NEWS

Join us for TFO Thursday - each Thursday we team up with other Armada members to earn marks and dilithium.

  • Epsilon Fleet - working on its Tier V colony upgrades.

  • The House of Martok 3rd Tier V Colony is on cooldown. Well done.

Picard News

The hype shuttle for Star Trek: Picard has definitely hit maximum warp, Captains. In fact, Picard is the number one most anticipated TV show of the coming year. At least according to metrics compiled and reported by the website IMDB. And if this week’s news reported by Deadline is any indication, CBS is well aware of the hype. The new series doesn’t even premiere until January 23rd, but Season Two has already been budgeted with over $20.4 million in tax incentives by the state of California. For reference sake, Deadline reports that Picard’s $20 million incentive is “the most any small screen project has ever been awarded in the California Film Commission program since then Governor Jerry Brown officially expanded the credits to $330 million a year”. So while the cast and crew have been cagey when asked about a potential Season Two, it’s hard to argue with $20 million in tax appropriations.

Plenty of questions still hang over Season Two speculation, though.  One big uncertainty for fans is the role that Season One showrunner Michael Chabon may occupy.  On December 10th, Variety reported that the Pulitzer Prize winning author and his wife, producing partner Ayelet Waldman, inked a deal with ViacomCBS property Showtime to adapt his novel “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay”.  The pair will serve the new project as Executive Producers and joint-showrunners. Now surely, Chabon will remain creatively connected to Picard Season Two, but it seems likely these other commitments will see him step down as showrunner.

With lots to still speculate about, only one thing seems certain after the Season Two news.

My previous prediction that Star Trek: Picard would be a single season swansong for the great Captain… well just maybe I was wrong.  Unless! What if they still send off Jean-Luc in the first season finale, and the show carries on the adventures of the rest of the cast aboard the U.S.S. Picard? It could happen.

Trekantino On The Rocks?

While we’re in the mood for speculation, let’s revisit some news we shared last episode. If you recall, we discussed recent statements from new ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakish, and among those was his confirmation that two new Star Trek films are currently in development. The obvious contenders at the time were the Kelvin Timeline’s Star Trek 4 and the much discussed Quentin Tarantino Star Trek project. But comments made by Tarantino this week are casting doubt on whether his Star Trek project may proceed at all. The Oscar-winning writer/director sat down for an interview with ConsequenceOfSound.net as their Filmmaker of the Year. In the far reaching interview, Tarantino once again echoed his commitment to walk away from filmmaking after 10 films. And when questioned whether Star Trek represented that 10th film, he answered, “I think I’m steering away from Star Trek, but I haven’t had an official conversation with those guys yet.” He went on to add “But in a weird way, it actually kind of freed me up. I mean, I have no idea what the story of the next one’s going to be. I don’t even have a clue.”

Paramount VR Deal

Paramount Pictures and VR platform service Bigscreen, Inc. have announced a new partnership. Under the new arrangement, Bigscreen’s virtual theater platform will distribute classic Paramount movies in 10 countries around the world. Starting December 16th 2019, Bigscreen will show four new movies every week, with each movie run lasting one week. Showtimes will begin every 30 minutes as live pay-per-view events. Captains, you’ll be happy to hear that the Kelvin Star Trek films are among the titles in the December lineup.

The virtual screenings will include 2D movies as well as select 3D movies rendered to create a unique 3D experience for Virtual Reality viewers. Besides just watching the films, Bigscreen offers users a virtual lobby with personal avatars and voice chat to add a social aspect to the experience. CEO and Founder of Bigscreen, Darshan Shankar, says “We are excited to enable fans around the world to chat and watch films together in our virtual movie theater.

Bigscreen’s service supports the Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift, Oculus Go, HTC Vive, Valve Index, SteamVR, and Microsoft Mixed Reality. To find out more, and to see a list of upcoming films, Trek out the links in our show notes.

Julien’s Auctions Results

Auction house Julien’s Auctions held its major event “Icons & Idols: Holly” on Monday December 16th in Beverly Hills, California. Over 400 items from across Hollywood history went to the auction block. Among the items, quite a few Star Trek props and artifacts went up for sale. A Starfleet dress uniform worn by Patrick Stewart on The Next Generation sold for $28,800. Other costumes sold included Mark Lenard’s costume as Sarek at $12,500, and Spock’s Romulan disguise from TNG’s “Reunification” at $20,000. Also sold were a first season Deanna Troi jumpsuit from TNG, Michael Dorn’s Klingon baldric from TNG’s second season, a Seven of Nine costume from Voyager, and many more props and artifacts.

So, just between us, guys, what’s the most you’ve ever paid for Star Trek memorabilia?

We MAY now know what the next featured TFO event will be…. well according to loading screens on the Tribble Test Server anyway. Prepare to be assimilated. If the updates to Tribble are to be believed, The Borg Resurgence event will include remastered versions of Infected: The Conduit, Into the Hive, and Khitomer Vortex. This event will also be the 3rd and final in the event campaign series for the Free Tier 6 ship coupon. The Tribble in game calendar has the event starting on Tuesday, January 7th and running until January 28th. And once you’ve completed the Featured TFO after 14 days you will unlock one of three separate variants of the Cyclic Modulation Ground Weapon. Sound familiar? Well, many players are pointing out the similarity in name to the Infinity Modulator from Star Trek Voyager Elite Force. This also wouldn’t be the first time the game devs have included a scifi gear inspired from other properties. *ahem* Proton Rifle, Future Flyer *ahem* Unfortunately, Cryptic has not ( officially announced this event -- not even during our interview -- so any and all details are subject to change…

Star Trek Command Training Program

It is hard to deny, at this point, that Star Trek programming has entered into a new Renaissance. With so many new shows currently in production, most every Trek fan can find something to be excited about.  But, if you’re an undergraduate or graduate student, this week’s news from CBS may be the most exciting yet. CBS Television Studios and the Television Academy Foundation have announced the “Star Trek Command Training Program”.  The new program will provide internship placements on a Star Trek series for two lucky students per semester, starting in 2020. If you’ve ever dreamed of sitting in the writers’ room, building bridge sets, or maybe being part of the Lower Decks animation team, then this could be your ticket into the crew.

Speaking about the program, Star Trek EP Alex Kurtzman said, “The Star Trek universe is an ideal place to celebrate new voices and perspectives. We want to provide the framework to begin entertainment careers in a meaningful way and can’t wait to get started.

The application process will be handled by The Academy Foundation, while CBS Television will handle mentorship assignments and curriculum. Interested students should visit TelevisionAcademy.com/internships to apply. Applications are open through January 21, 2020 for eligible college students 18 and over.

Colm Meaney Honored

Veteran Star Trek actor Colm Meaney was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award this past week at the annual Irish Post Awards. The Awards honor the accomplishments of Irish individuals in fields like business, entertainment, and sports. We, of course, are familiar with Meaney for his 225 Star Trek appearances.  His career as Starfleet engineer Miles O’Brien is second only to Michael Dorn’s Worf for Trek appearances. The versatile actor has also appeared in an impressive body of other TV and film projects, with IMDB listing 127 acting credits to his name. When interviewed after the Awards, Mr. Meaney himself mused, “I enjoyed Star Trek. I did it for seven years. Seven years in a space suit was enough, but it was very enjoyable. Star Trek fans still speak to me in the street. Sometimes it’s like I’m two different actors with two different careers - the Star Trek career and the other career

Speaking of the award itself, the actor said, ”I feel very honoured. It was a bit of a surprise but a very welcome one.”

Official Star Trek Timeline

The official Star Trek website also published an interesting new video this week. The video is titled “A Timeline Through the Star Trek Universe, Part 1”. Throughout the 2 minute, 5 second video, we’re reminded of touchstone events in the Star Trek timeline. Beginning with the events of Voyager’s “Death Wish” at 13.8 billion years ago, the chart carries right through the busy 23rd and 24th centuries, up to the destruction of Romulus in 2387. Each iteration of Star Trek on the big or small screen is represented, with special mention given to certain high profile events like the founding of the Federation, the Enterprise’s 5 year mission, or the Dominion War. Perhaps most intriguingly, the video ends with the promise of “To Be Continued…”

Star Trek 4

Speaking of adding to the canon timeline… Star Trek Kelvin 4 is gaining momentum --- FOR REAL THIS TIME. In an exclusive report by Deadline, Noah Hawley has been announced as its writer AND director. For those of you unfamiliar with the name, Hawley developed the X-Men Universe spinoff “Legion” and is the brains behind FX’s Emmy-winning limited series Fargo…. Now, not much is else is known with respect to story or production timetables but, at least we know the production is -- officially -- in the works. But, what about all this Tarantino talk that we just can’t avoid??... Well according to Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr //quote// The studio separately is working on a Star Trek spinoff that Quentin Tarantino is eyeing to direct and has been working on with Abrams. This one would likely carry an R rating, with a screenplay by The Revenant scribe Mark L. Smith.//end quote//

A Closer Look at the Earhart and Sech Strike Wing Escorts

This weekend a few of us in the Armada had a chance to try out the new Strike Wing Escorts and must say, I really enjoy them. Since I prefer to fly escorts, I rarely fly ships that have hangar pets - but I like the combination of a fast ship with some extra friends around to help out. Also, the console, Universal Gravimetric Disruptions - is an excellent addition to any control builds out there. It provides a slight boost to Energy Damage and Control Expertise - but also - it affects multiple enemies. So if you like grouping up your enemies and making them explode - highly recommended!

Welcome to Mudd’s Market

If you’ve been playing Star Trek Online for a long time then you’re lucky enough to have had the opportunity to acquire a plethora of limited-time rewards. Back in olden days of feature episode missions and big expansion story arcs, if you played the featured missions within a certain time frame you were able to get some pretty cool items. Attending conventions, special events, or even donating to charities would deliver in-game rewards that available nowhere else. Well, thanks to Star Trek’s mischievous merchant, Harcourt Fenton Mudd, some of those highly sought after exclusive items are making their way to a Zen market near you. On November 22nd “Mudd’s Market” will open in the C-store with a selection of previously exclusive or limited items. The opening round of items will include The Beacon Kahless, the Crystalline Antiproton Energy Weapons, and Bio-engineered Furiadon Combat Dino with frickin’ lasers. All of these items will come bundled with an Ultimate Tech Upgrade. Also available will be the Vizier-class Command Assault Cruiser, The Ophidian Cane, Shard of Possibilities, Reman and Breen Bridge officers, the EMH Holographic Bridge officer, Leeta holographic bridge officer, and the Original Series Holographic bridge officers. The items available in Mudd’s Market will change at times and there are sure to be some surprise discounts. So it’s encouraged that you check the C-store daily.

2019 Winter Wonderland Ship Reward Revealed

Once again we’re getting a sneak peek at the next event. A new tab has appeared in the Event UI for the Winter Wonderland event. Including an image and details for the new Tier 6 Fek’Ihri Dreadnaught carrier. Featuring a Lt. Commander Science/Miracle Worker bridge officer station and coming with a whopping 5 tactical console slots, this fearsome sail barge comes with the universal console, Open the Maw of Gethor. When activated, and we’re not making this up, the ship projects a flaming skull in front of the ship dealing fire damage to all nearby foes and launching Lost Souls of Grethor. This carrier comes with two hangar slots from which you can launch more Lost Souls of Grethor, each one using Claw Swipes and Flame Breath to damage enemies. After achieving level 5 ship mastery you will unlock “Fiery Entrance. When activating Narrow Sensor Bands or launching Hangar pets, your ship will, of course, emit a burning ring of fire dealing damage to nearby foes with a chance to confuse them. At the time of this recording, there has been no official blog post detailing the ship, however, as of right now you can log into the game and view the stats and details under the Winter Event tab.

WEEKLY TOP TIP

Running patrols seems to be a fast and fun way to level up your event progress. It can be even faster when you’re running the “Blockade” patrol. After you set up the beacon you’ll need to defend three groups of Krenim ships from Vadwaur and Voth. Well, as the contact says, if you only destroy the Vaadwaur the Voth might leave. And that’s exactly what happens. By focusing on taking out just the Vaadwaur ships you can cut your targets for the mission almost in half. As soon as the last Vaadwaur ship is destroyed in each group the Voth ships disappear. Just imagine how much time you’ll save over the course this feature event. And if you want to run these patrols at a high difficulty level, this can make your runs a little smoother.

Retro Gaming

Star Trek The Next Generation for Game Boy

Earth date September 1993. Star Trek The Next Generation is heading into its seventh and final season. Star Trek Deep Space Nine premiered earlier in the year and now starts its second season. Star Trek’s golden age was at its height on the small screen. Then there’s the smallest screen. The Nintendo Game Boy. The OG black and yellow 160 pixel by 144 pixel 8-bit gaming brick of happiness. Star Trek TNG for both Game Boy and the NES also released during September of 1993. And boy or boy did this game have one little trekkie beaming with joy. Players take on the role of a Starfleet cadet being instructed by Jean-Luc Picard as they take command of the Enterprise-D and embark on a series of training missions. Everything from transporting an ambassador to rescuing a crew to engaging in combat with the Borg. As the acting captain you give commands through interacting with each bridge crew member by selecting their combadge. To complete shipboard tasks like establishing a standard orbit or diverting power to the shields, you play various mini-games. As you complete missions you rank up and will unlock passwords that can be used to pick up your progress where you left off. I played this exclusively on the Game Boy, but I’ve heard that the NES version is a little easier to play. The graphics are not the best for the time, and the gameplay can feel clunky and not very intuitive. But at a time when the only other mobile Star Trek video games had you flying the Enterprise through an asteroid field, this was the first game that you felt like you were in the Captain’s chair.

So how can you play this game today? Well, you could of course download an emulator on your computer or phone. I actually have something called a Smartboy from Hyperkin. It’s basically the lower half of a Game Boy with the the control buttons that you slide your USB-C phone into. You run an emulator on your phone, but you can actually plug a real cartridge into the back and play the game from the physical Game Boy cartridge on your phone screen. I love this because it feel like a Game Boy in my hands, but with a bright colorful screen. But the best option in my opinion is to purchase a Game Boy Advance SP. These are the first clamshell looking Nintendo handheld consoles, and the first with a backlit LCD screen. It plays both Game Boy Advance games

This week, we Trek Out Star Trek’s presence at San Diego Comic Con! Discovery, Short Treks, Lower Decks...Picard. All of it!

TREK IT OUT

by Jake Morgan

Discovery and Short Treks

This is it. San Diego Comic Con. The biggest pop culture convention. In. The. World. And Star Trek was there in FULL force. On Saturday, July 20th, Star Trek’s creative teams and on-screen talent took over the vaunted “Hall H” for an hour and a half, and gave us a taste of what’s to come from our favorite franchise!

First to take the stage was the Star Trek: Discovery team, including showrunner Michelle Paradise, Star Trek Franchise Lead Alex Kurtzman, Executive Producer Heather Kadin, Series Lead Sonequa Martin-Green, and series newcomer David Ajala. Kurtzman started the season 3 discussion by saying “So there will be lots of huge changes in season three. There will be things you recognize, there will be things you don’t recognize. Part of the fun of it is that we get to honor canon but shake it up hugely. We’re not erasing anything, so please don’t worry about that. It’s all still what it was

Kurtzman also discussed Discovery’s newest character, “Book”. “His full name is Cleveland Booker and he will be a character who isn’t exactly what you expect right away. When they get to the other side of the wormhole, they have big problems. In fact, even getting to find each other may be really difficult, because they may not have actually landed in the same place.

After announcing the addition of SIX new Short Treks, the panel released a one minute and forty-two second trailer that featured Anson Mount’s Christopher Pike, a “Fascinating” Turbolift ride with Number One and Ensign Spock, and tribbles galore. Kurtzman explained that there will be THREE Short Trek’s that include Pike, Number One, and Spock, two animated featurettes, and a Prequel to “Star Trek: Picard” that takes about 15 years prior to the series start.

Finally, Alex Kurtzman teased a possible Pike series by saying “There’s obviously been a lot of speculation about whether Pike and Number One and Spock would get there own show. So I guess my question to you guys is, do you want them to get their own show? [FANS CHEERING] Okay, we’ll think about it.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

Next to hit the stage was the team from Star Trek’s upcoming animated-comedy - Star Trek: Lower Decks. During the panel, moderated by series regular Jerry O’Connell, Mike McMahon described the time frame of the show, saying “It takes place in 2380, so it’s right after “Nemesis”, Voyager is back.I’m a TNG guy, I really wanted to do it like that

McMahon, with the help of panelists and series stars Tawny Newsome and Jack Quad, described the uptight Ensign Boimler and the Devil-May-Care Ensign Mariner saying “Boimler and Mariner are often given the same jobs and go about it in totally different ways.”. Of the newly-graduated-Medical Ensign Tandi, McMahon says “there’s no gross alien illness that she’s not just absolutely thrilled to be dealing with”. McMahon goes on to compare engineering Ensign Rutherford to another famous TNG engineer “like Geordie LaForge, he is amazing at engineering stuff, but unlike Geordie LaForge he DOES NOT solve the problems by the end of every episode

Finally, McMahon discusses the California-Class U.S.S. Cerritos’ command crew “It was important to me that our ship felt like it was a real operating ship in Starfleet, and that there were characters in the ship, Senior officers, who consider it to be their show - even though it’s not

Star Trek: Picard SDCC Panel

Last, but certainly not least, the production team and cast of the upcoming “Star Trek: Picard” took the stage, and they did not disappoint. During their forty minute panel, the team discussed the highly anticipated series..

Sir Patrick Stewart and Alex Kurtzman reiterated points regarding Stewart’s return to the character and the difference in tone between Picard and Discovery, with Producer Heather Kadin referring to Picard as more “Lyrical and Grounded” than Discovery. The cast could not say much about their roles, but most agreed with Allison Pill, who plays Dr. Agnes Jurati “think the really interesting thing about this cast as a  whole is everybody here is pretty broken, in terms of their character, in very interesting ways and different to a lot of what we’ve seen. There’s just a lot of lonely sad sacks.

Then, Sir Patrick Stewart introduced the series first full-length trailer. The excitement in Hall H was so high, they had to play it twice.

In the two minute and nine second presentation, a conflicted Picard recalls the sacrifice of Commander Data and admits that, despite trying, he does not feel that he belongs on the family vineyard. A young woman -Dahj - approaches Picard in need of help, and the former Starfleet officer feels drawn to do so. We are introduced to the cast of the series with bits of action, a possible Borg experimentation facility, a Borg cube, and the ominous proclamation that “She’s the end of all, she’s the destroyer”. As the action slows, Star Trek: Voyager’s 7 of 9 - portrayed by Jeri Ryan - asks Jean-Luc Picard if he’s there to save the Galaxy. In the final scene, Picard is holding a hand of cards. He looks up and says “I don’t want the game to end”, and it is revealed that Picard is speaking to Commander Data, who replies “I can see that Captain”.

Following the trailer, Jeri Ryan, Brent Spiner, and “Star Trek: The Next Generation’s” Hugh of Borg - John Del Arco - joined the panel. In responding to a question regarding his return to the iconic role of Data, Brent Spiner replied “The possibility of standing next to Patrick on a set again was just more I could say no to. And I had to consider the fans as well. To think that this was going to happen, and there was a possibility that I might be there - there was no way I could refuse that. Of course I had to be there.”. But Stewart and Spiner will not be the only Next Gen Alumni to appear on the upcoming series. Show-Runner Michael Chabon said “The joy on Patrick’s face on the days when we’ve had returning cast members, and in particular one whose name came up earlier - but I just want to mention is a part of “Star Trek: Picard” - not only having directed 2 episodes, but will be returning along with Marina Sirtis, and that is Jonathan Frakes

Picard After The Panel With TV Line

While the news that dropped on the stage of Hall H was HUGE, some of the clarifications after the panel were equally interesting. In a ten minute interview with TV Line, the cast shed some light on what we saw and heard.

John Del Arco, the actor who played the Borg “Hugh” in “Decent”, confirmed Hugh’s status. “I can confirm to you that I’m still a part Borg, and that I am a developed human version of the last time I saw [Picard]. As they’re leaving the planet [In “Decent, Part II”], I say ‘well what are we going to do now, we have no leader?’ and Picard says ‘I don’t think that’s true’. So the implication being, in TNG, I ended up with this colony of Borg. And all I can say is that he has developed further in his leadership capacities.

Brent Spiner also cleared up any confusion about who he’ll be playing in the upcoming series. When asked if he was indeed playing Data, not B4, Spiner elaborated “Correct, although i think in that draw is B4. But Data is indeed on the show. I spoke to Alex Kutzman about this morning to be able to say that, not to lead you down a path, but he isn’t in every episode. He makes some  appearances, but he is IN THE SHOW in other ways

Sir Patrick spoke about his thoughts on more of his Star Trek: The Next Generation costars joining him on Picard. Stewart was clear that he did not want to remake TNG, and said “I know that our lovely fanbase were hoping that they would see the crew of the Enterprise all back. But no, that’s NEVER going to happen, but there are encounters - some of which have been shot, some of which are only still in the planning stage. But hopefully we will have more than one season and there will be other opportunities. And apart from the principal cast of Next Generation, there were other characters that we encountered at different times who also might show up again”Finally, Stewart teased a return to the TNG uniform, saying “I did strongly make the point that I did not want to be in a uniform. At all. And I spoke strongly about that, and I have just made myself look slightly foolish by insisting that in the end of next week’s work, I will be in a uniform [...] It’s a  flashback, and I said in order for this to have the right kind of context, I need to be in a uniform.
