We know how hard the holidays can be, navigating food issues and inappropriate comments from family members you hardly ever see.  More-love.org, an organization committed to empowering parents to raise kids who are free from body hate, disordered eating and eating disorders, posted a handy dandy info graphic about using bopo friendly language at Thanksgiving - how spot on is this?? Did you see this video op-ed about Mary Cain? In 2013 Mary became the youngest American track and field athlete to make a World Championships team. Then she was signed by Nike’s Oregon Project where the head coaches just kept telling her she needed to lose weight to be the best.  One of the biggest issues here was the coaches lack of knowledge on how to train female athletes but it also speaks to a larger issue in athletics where the first line of offense to improve your skill is “lose weight”. In some programs, weight loss is treated as a universal constant instead of assessing each athletes specific needs.  We also talked about Sierra Schultzzie - a YouTuber who’s channel is all about Body Positivity.  We’re always on the lookout for people putting more bopo vibes into the universe and Sierra is crushing it - make sure you check her out!

Episode 31 - Huge Amazing Balls with Kristen Bartlett!

Do you guys know Matt McGorry? He’s an actor/ social activist / striving to be the most woke cis white man on the planet. Seriously follow his insta for some great make-you-think content and activist themed book recommendations.  He recently posted about the world of before and after pics and we couldn’t have said it better, “ Some people are going to comment about how before and after weight loss photos are actually about ‘health.’ And while I can understand why you’d think that given what we are taught by our culture these photos are still supporting the prevalent idea that health looks a specific way (like weight loss) and that weight loss equals health.” Lillian has a story about a woman who was in need of an MRI. Her doctor told her that she was too big for the machine they had access to and suggested she contact the ZOO for help.  Absolutely unacceptable! A quick google revealed that there were machines available called “3T Scanners” that accommodate a weight up to 550lbs and have a 17cm diameter (shoulder to shoulder.) So if you are in need of an MRI and your doctor is also completely unhelpful, try searching for 3T Scanners near you. Here’s a nice change of pace - a possibly helpful instagram targeted ad! We kept seeing ad’s for a new app called Joyn  - Joyful movement classes for every body! The trailer has us hopeful that this app is going to be good but we’re going to give the free trial a go and report back!

Episode 30 - A Long Poorly Written Story

Hello Body Poscasters welcome back, hope you’re well! We LOVE doing the podcast and we’re still working out how to make it as good as we can so I hope you’ll bare with us while we sort some stuff out! We finally got together and had a chat about all of the things that have happened since last we casted - we attended the 5th year of Curvycon where Lillian kicked off Saturday’s events with her Yes act ( SO incredible!) We got to meet and see Sarah Potenza perform and, wow. Make sure you check her out!  Liza attended the Emmy’s with her husband a few weeks ago and couldn’t believe it when she wound up with several dress options that not only would work for the event, but also looked cute and fit comfortably! What a refreshing moment in a fashion world that can feel like it’s not meant for anyone over a size 6. Did you guys see It Chapter 2? Our feelings about Bill Hader aside, we were disappointed to see it added to the long list of films that use someone’s weight for a cheap laugh. How do we change this??? Episode 27 - A Shake is Not a Lifestyle

Awwww remember prom? Finding a date, planning with your group of friends, deciding what your hair was going to look like, making sure your dress didn't clash with your modesty poncho... ah... the MEMS! A school in Michigan got some flack for announcing that they would be providing "modesty ponchos" for the girls who's dresses weren't up to the school's dress code which contained language like "no cut outs below the natural bra line" (WHAT?!) Dress codes are hugely problematic - they target young women, stifling creative expression at a time when figuring out your fashion sense = figuring out yourself and they make these young women responsible for other people's inability to not objectify them. PLUS, they weren't even cute poncho's y'all... Rihanna is crushing it again! We're not talking about her Fenty makeup line (with one of the widest ranges of skin tone matching foundation) or her amazing Met Gala outfit ( I mean... ) On May 11th she'll launch Savage X Fenty a new lingerie line that is way more size inclusive than we've seen from fashion launch in a long time!  The bra's go up to 44DDD and the underwear up to a size 3X - it's not EVERYTHING, but it's an amazing start! We're excited to see what the line looks like but if the teasers are any indication it's hot as hell!  @badgalriri on Instagram: "savages come in all shapes and sizes!! ya ready? @savagexfenty MAY.11.2018"Props to Miley Cyrus you guys! Back in 2008 when she was 15 she posed for Annie Lebovitz for the cover of Vanity Fair.  When the article was published she came under a lot of fire  - people claiming that the pic was too racy and she was too young.  At the time she issued an apology (that was CLEARLY manufactured by her people) but she recently tweeted a redaction of the apology which is awesome.  I mean just look at the picture, especially next to this behind the scenes shot. It's a gorgeous pic, shot by one of the most prominent photographers, of a girl with her back out. We got to sit down and chat with the incredible Gotham Girl Blue about a week ago! We talked about our hair stories, why she chose to go natural and the hair traumas of our youth. This self-proclaimed feminist, fighter and Eleanor Democrat (because "FDR wasn't intersectional enough") was an absolute delight to talk to and she is crushing it on twitter so make sure you head over and give her follow!

We don't consider ourselves gamers and it turns out we were missing out on a whole new subset of fat shaming! A couple of listeners (shout out to Branan and Pizabo!) brought this phenomenon to our attention and it didn't take us long to go down a rabbit hole of fat shaming in video games.  This article by Anshuman Iddamsetty does a really great job of breaking it all down.  Fat avatars are portrayed in the worst ways, punishment for unstoppable evil geniuses comes not from execution but from an injection of obesity, and plump passive princesses are kind of the best we can get!  Image via Wikipedia Feminist Frequency has a great video all about body diversity in video games. We also introduced a new segment to the poscast - Your Fave is Problematic! Amy Schumer is back on our radar with her new movie trailer! We're trying to reserve judgement until we see the actual film, but I Feel Pretty seems pretty problematic.  A "shock photography" art piece by Eric Ravelo *** from about 2013 has been making the rounds again.  The piece is meant to bring to harsh light some of the worst ways in which children are victimized including gun violence in American schools, pedophilia, sex trafficking, war and... obesity? One of the images, clearly commenting on the "obesity epidemic", feels extremely out of place in this piece.  *** the linked images are pretty disturbing so please click with caution!  OK, on to some more positive stuff! Janelle Monae continues to kill the game with her newest work. She's released two songs (Make Me Feel and Django Jane) from yet to have a release date next album, Dirty Computer. I mean, they're just great.  Our girl Keala Settle KILLED on the Oscars.  Her song didn't win (but SHOULD have!) but she totally brought the house down with her performance of This is Me. We can't wait to see what she does next!  NEDA is doing great things to support individuals and families affected by eating disorders including spotlighting their campaign with National Eating Disorders Awareness Week.  This years theme was "Let's Get Real" and their goal was "to expand the conversation and highlight stories we don't often hear." Whitney has a bunch of exciting things lined up including her book I Do it With the Lights On available now in all of the book places! Also be sure to take a look at her website www.nobodyshame.com and subscribe to her newsletter to get updates about fun things like her Werk With Whitney Instructional Dance and Fitness DVD's! We were thrilled to have Whitney Way Thore of TLC's My Big Fat Fabulous Life on the poscast! She talks about her journey into the world of body positivity and what it's like to have her life filmed and presented in a TV show.  Make sure you check out her Ted talk "Living Without Shame". Whitney has also experienced the cliche of "you're fat so you must be unhealthy" - is anyone else as sick of hearing this as we are? The point is you absolutely cannot tell the state of someone's health by simply looking at them. And BMI? Well the formula for that number was dreamed up by a mathematician in the early 19th century and in 1998 the National Institutes of Health just decided to change it!  This NPR list of the top 10 reasons why the BMI is bogus is pretty great.

We discuss the new line of Barbie dolls that have been released!  This Jezebel article from 2009 has some great examples of doll modification.  We're really interested to see what people do with the Barbie fashionista dolls. After recording we also found some interesting facts about the original Barbie. In this article, in which Samantha Olson talks about original Barbie's measurements and how she would stack up next to the "average woman" she says: "Mattel was dangerously aware of the public’s idealizations, and in 1965 the company came out with a “Slumber Party Barbie,” complete with a bathroom scale permanently set to 110 pounds.  In this impossible quest to reach Barbie’s unattainable measurements, many girls have developed what is known as “The Barbie Effect.”"

Episode 10 - Why Am I Fat and Happy?

Hello lovely listeners welcome to 2018 when we here at the Body Poscast promise to record and upload episodes with some kind of regularity! We hope your year is off to a great start! Lillian got some great news - she had written a few essays that are going to be included in a collection called My Body My Words AND she'll be reading at the launch of the book in NYC on March 14th at 7pm at KGB Bar (85 E 4th St.) So if you're local be sure to follow them on twitter and come out for the launch! Have we always gotten measurements for the president? The White House doctor has said that Trump's health is "excellent" and published his weight as 239 pounds and his height at 6'3". Say what now? Whether or not these stats are a lie (*ahem* they are) we have to remind ourselves and others that his weight is not the issue here.  There are plenty of things to call him out for and the space that he takes up is not what makes him a horrible human and leader. Megyn Kelly said something dumb again! You can watch the original clip as well as her cringe-y walk back the next day from an episode of The View.  For a woman who seems to be desperately trying to change her Fox News image she sure says a lot of terrible things. It was hard to avoid talking about Aziz Ansari and the babe.net article (titled: I Went on a Date with Aziz Ansari. It Turned Into the Worst Night of My Life.) We would like to hear what you think too. After recording, Lillian found an article that Liza felt articulated her feelings in a much clearer way. In the end, this woman (Grace) felt violated and our hearts go out to her.  Few women are unfamiliar with this kind of sexual encounter and it's important to have these conversations as (hopefully) a catalyst for change. On a more frivolous note - have you seen The Greatest Showman yet????? Full disclosure; it is a musical in the most musical-esque way.  It's absolute cheese on toast and it's delicious! We're only mildly shocked that YouTuber Nicole Arbour has decided to post another fat shaming video, and not shocked at all that it is once again full of not only hate, but also inaccuracies.  THIS is what an athlete looks like.  Each of these women is an olympic athlete. This picture absolutely challenges the notion that thinness is the only indicator of health and fitness.  Ashley Graham appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated 2016 swimsuit edition is the latest in the slow climb to global body acceptance! Check out her TedX talk here. Obviously we applaud the effort, but it was Hailey Clauson's cover (right) that had us really talking.  Let us know what you think!  This social experiment video about sexy vs breastfeeding really struck a nerve. If you're just as confused as we are about the rise of Trump, this article may help explain some things.  We think that the body positivity movement is part of a larger picture of unrest in this country. If you're local, Lillian will be performing at this amazing event hosted by My Body Does and featuring tons of awesome, body positive artists

Episode 19 - Segues?

**We recorded this poscast at the end of January, right after the march. Apologies for the delayed posting! What a day! From the pictures comparing the crowd in DC at the march and the crowd at the inauguration, to the feeds coming in from cities and countries around the world, the Women's March that took place on January 21st was a great demonstration. I don't know about you, but it gave me just a little bit of hope that the US hasn't actually gone crazy. Of course as liberals and conscientious people we have to look at everything with a bit of a critical eye.  There were several groups who felt left out during the march and personally I think it's important to talk about that.In this episode you can really hear Liza struggle a bit to sort it all out- join us won't you?! How did you feel about the march? If you're a minority, did you feel left out of the march? If you don't consider yourself a minority, was this the first protest you supported?
