Rank #1: Episode 111 - Medicine of the Soul

Podcast cover
Read more

Michael Meade begins with the idea that we live in two worlds, the daily world with its injustices, confusions and fears and the “otherworld”, the realm of soul and imagination, the source of all the arts and spiritual traditions. Meade also reminds us of the old idea that “therapy treats my condition and art treats the condition of the world”.  What follows is an intricate weaving of poetry and ideas that leads to the kinds of medicine waiting to be found in the depths of the soul.

Podcast cover
Read more

“We answer the roaring of the world with the roar of awakening from inside ourselves,” says Michael Meade.  In answering the frequently asked question, “Why does a person have to find the thread of their life?” he tells an ancient teaching story from Africa that addresses how to find a path of meaning and purpose during this time of great upheaval. The story suggests that only in facing our fears can we find some safety and a way through the obstacles before us. Weaving together stories, anecdotes and an exploration of collective and individual initiation, Meade speaks to how awakening to oneself is not simply about ourselves, but rather, a transformation that connects us to deeper community and the Soul of the World.

On this episode, drawn from an interview on New Dimensions Radio, Michael Meade tells the Native American story of the Old Woman in the Cave, reminding us that as things fall apart we draw closer to the emergence of new patterns and ancient wisdom. To be alive at this time means to be caught in the great unraveling that strands us near all the loose threads of creation; but it also means to be close to the revelation of the new design and the next paradigm.  Meade suggests that in facing up to the enormous problems of the world and accepting the troubles that knock on our doors, we can better learn what hidden resources, deep resolves, and surprising designs we have hidden within us.

Rank #5: Episode 154 - Solstice and the Tree of Life

Podcast cover
Read more

At the beginning of this podcast Michael Meade states: “This is not just the dark time of the year, but increasingly dark times for everyone, especially for those who care for the souls of other people and for the well-being of the earth we all live on.” He goes on to describe how ancient symbols and practices at the Winter Solstice served as a reminder of the cosmological connection between the human soul and the hidden unity of life.

Symbols have the power to bring the mind and the heart together and connect us to the deepest truths of life. A Christmas tree can stand for the Tree of Life, as it represents both the still point at the center and the power of life to change and renew itself. Simply lighting a single candle in the midst of darkness can be a reminder of the eternal process of renewal and restoration that is an essential, yet easily forgotten aspect of all of life.

This has been a dark year, yet, despite all the increasing divides in the world, we are all secretly connected, and we are each a part of the living substance of creation. Solstice coming at the darkest time of the year is a reminder of this cosmological connection between the human soul and the hidden unity of life.

This episode presents part one of an interview featured on the For the Wild podcast entitled “Cultivating Mythic Imagination.”

Michael Meade describes how the crises of cosmological, mythological and psychological disconnection from nature and from each other may drive us to places of darkness and suffering. Yet, there is great potential in that darkness to discover the creative energy of renewal. Retracing meaning through myth offers opportunities to understand the great challenge of our time to heal the planet from its wounds, and imagine a worldview based upon inclusion and connection. This interview explores the power of creative imagination and the visions of youth, the danger of hyper-individualism, and the limits of heroism in the face of global crises.

Rank #7: Episode 120 - The Need for the Ecstatic

Podcast cover
Read more

This episode begins with Michael Meade answering the question: “Why do you typically end a public event with the ecstatic poetry of Rumi and Hafiz?”  Part of the answer involves the natural human longing for the Divine, the greater need for the ecstatic in a world gone wrong and the necessity of love.

The greater answer becomes both a treatise on the meaning of the ecstatic and a tour through the heavens and earth as seen through the eyes of the ecstatic poets.  Getting out of our static state and fixed attitudes about life can lead to a state of “reckless abandon” that makes life more immediate, more present, and more joyous.

On this episode, a replay of a popular episode from 2 years ago Michael Meade, examines the differences between spirit and soul. After describing how spirit rises like air and fire and soul descends like water and earth, he turns to the struggle of spirit and soul in each human life. Secretly, spirit and soul are trying to come together, to unite, but it’s usually the depth of soul that’s missing. By growing more soul each person can become a unique example of the middle ground of creation where spirit can descend and soul can rise.

Rank #9: Episode 134 - The Hidden Unity of Life

Podcast cover
Read more

In this episode, Michael Meade returns to an old conception of life having three distinct layers.  The first layer is the daily world that is typically the place of common courtesy, civil society and predictable patterns of weather and human behavior.  The second layer is the place of abandonment and heartache, but also the territory that gives rise to racism, bigotry, misogyny and conspiracy theories.  Thankfully, the third layer of life is the realm of underlying unity, the place of universal love and understanding, the surprising terrain of forgiveness and reconciliation and the sacred ground where nature and culture meet.

The bad news is that the second layer has now erupted into and often takes over the first layer of life.  The good news is that the layer of underlying unity remains nearby and can be found in music and the arts and poetry like the ecstatic verses of Rumi and Hafiz that remind us that we all secretly participate in the divine intimacy of things.

Michael Meade tells an ancient, provocative story of the Half-giantess, who keeps a forbidding lake of sorrows and a boiling cauldron of angers and fears. The story opens a consideration of ways in which the human psyche can become spellbound. This leads to a discussion of neurotic conditions and psychosomatic states which can befall anyone.  In mythic terms, solutions for these ancient spells as well as current psychological conditions require going, consciously and directly into the place of the spellbound area.

In the wake of the confusion and disappointment surrounding the initial summary of the Mueller Report, Michael Meade answers listeners’ questions about what story he would tell Congress and political leaders if asked.  After pointing out that the facts can never tell the whole story, he turns to an ancient wisdom story in which telling the truth is the only way to stop the spread of life-threatening poison.  As the tale illuminates, living under falsity can poison the core of a society as well as an individual. When the poison is already spreading, the only remedy is the medicine of truth.

Rank #12: Episode 121 - Paths to the Center

Podcast cover
Read more

“Each soul is on a lifelong pilgrimage and the secret object of every pilgrimage is the center of the pilgrim”, says Michael Meade on the latest podcast. People set off to a famous shrine; they seek to enter a holy place or arrive at a natural wonder. The point seems to be to reach that distant destination and somehow be renewed and confirmed by the experience. Yet instead, Meade suggests, any renewal that happens must happen within the pilgrim and can only happen when the center of the self becomes awakened by the ardor of the effort or by the grace of the unseen.

We may set out to reach a shrine or spiritual center, but we fully arrive only when we reach the center of ourselves. A genuine path must lead us to the center of our own life; for our life is a pilgrimage to find our awakened self.

Rank #13: Episode 118 - The Call of Genius

Podcast cover
Read more

Michael Meade suggests that in times of change, just as in periods of personal crisis, there can be intensification and an acceleration of calling. Whether it comes as a daunting challenge or a crushing blunder, a big dream or a cutting loss, each major life event has within it an opportunity to awaken to the call of the deeper self and the resident genius of the soul.

What calls us calls for the giving of the inherent gifts and natural talents we brought to life to begin with. What calls to us calls to the dream set within our soul before we were born. Answering the call opens pathways of genius and imagination that can lead to finding one’s “dharma” or natural way of being in life and serving in the world. We are each called to become more fully ourselves and our transformation liberates our spirit, but it also serves something beyond ourselves. In transforming each of us, genius also transforms the world.

This episode begins with ideas of “anti-natalism” and a growing sense amongst some people that children should not be brought into such a troubled world.  After tracing the effects of nihilism on contemporary politics and in the fatalistic predictions of science, Michael Meade turns to an ancient story from India to help awaken the deep sense of self and soul that secretly relates each person to all the beings in nature, but also to the divine. Far from any idea of withdrawing from life or refusing to give birth to new lives, we end up in an ancient story where humans can be seen to have a specific role as agents of the ongoing creation of the world.

On this excerpt from Michael Meade’s audiobook “Awakening the Soul”, Meade explores how the soul’s great adventure tries to surface throughout life, so that any moment can become a true turning point if we leave the maps that others have made, follow the soul’s original calling and enter life more fully and more meaningfully. He suggests that ultimately it involves a “gnosis,” a deeper way of knowing that uncovers our inner resources and reveals the unique powers and gifts of our soul. We are repeatedly asked to choose: either we accept the life that has been given to us or we undertake the greater adventure of the soul.

Michael Meade describes a recent workshop aimed at climate crisis issues that was suddenly interrupted by alerts warning that nearby areas had to be evacuated because of climate-induced fires. As the outside problem also became an inside issue, some people in the event had to return to their homes prior to evacuating the area. In order to not wind up in confusion and overwhelm, a ritual was created.

Describing the ritual, Meade focuses on ideas of how to create “sudden community,” how to protect those facing danger, and how to ground the anxiety and fear that have become all too familiar in these days of cultural disorder and the upheaval of nature.
