Rank #1: "How Not to Hate Your Husband After Kids" | Jancee Dunn, Bestselling Author

Podcast cover
Read more
Relationship tips + hilarious parenting stories. Podcast #122: New York Times best-selling author Jancee Dunn and host Ellie Knaus share the ins and outs of their relationships and compare funny notes on the home front. Dunn's new book, "How Not to Hate Your Husband After Kids," (Little, Brown and Company) is described as "part memoir of discovery, part parenting and marriage how-to, and part intriguing exploration of science that explains why we behave the way we do." We laugh about what frustrates us most about our partners in Newbornland. For example, I remember in my sleep-deprived haze telling Adam he was not allowed to sit in the driveway with his phone after work and that if he wanted to go to the bathroom right when he got home then he should use the one at the office!... (Sorry, Adam. Can't wait to be back in the thick of it with baby #2 this July!) Jancee shares communication skills she learned from an FBI hostage negotiator (for her husband, but I swear it applies to toddlers as well), and we discuss the traps of "maternal gatekeeping". If you find yourself losing your cool with your partner in front of your child, Jancee offers a powerful suggestion for calming your temper. And if you're struggling to make Quality Family Time (Q.F.T.) in this crazy age of kids sports and non-stop birthday parties, Jancee offers the guilt-free, sure-fire way to get off the hook! Yes, buckle up. We cover a lot of ground! xx Ellie
Guest Bio:
New York Times bestselling author Jancee Dunn is the author of five books, including "But Enough About Me", a memoir of her rock and roll years, (HarperCollins, 2008) and an essay collection, "Why Is My Mother Getting A Tattoo? And Other Questions I Wish I Never Had To Answer", a finalist for the Thurber Prize for American Humor (Ballantine, 2009). In 2012, with Cyndi Lauper, she cowrote "Cyndi Lauper: A Memoir". Her first book for children, "I’m Afraid Your Teddy Has Been Naughty Today", will be published in 2017 by Candlewick Press. She was a staff writer at Rolling Stone for over a decade, and a veejay at MTV for five years. She writes for many publications, among them the New York Times, Vogue, Food & Wine, and Parents, and was a columnist for GQ and O, The Oprah Magazine. I would often share her New York Times Motherlode blogs on our #naptimereads. We’re breaking down some of the parenting “challenge spots” (her phrase, mine would be "moments that make me want to laugh-cry"), including chores, discipline, screen time, and getting ready in the morning.  I also share fabulous #atomicmama listener tips for how to be a happier parent! xx Ellie Knaus, mom-in-chief

Joe Newman grew up with the labels: ADHD and "problem child". Now as parenting expert and author of "Raising Lions: The Art of Compassionate Discipline," he guides parents and teachers in supporting strong-willed children. Newman promises "Firm boundaries make happy, more relaxed children." In this #AtomicMoms, mom-pal Marie Horrigan and I celebrate our children's ferocity while we learn how to create firm boundaries, how to "stay on their side" while handling impulsive or inappropriate behavior, and how we can "shift from opponent to coach". If that's not enough, Joe also explains why I no longer need to ask my child to say "I'm sorry." Listen to find out why. Oprah says of our guest Martha Beck: "She's one of the smartest women I know." In podcast #93 Martha Beck encourages host Ellie Knaus to get honest in every aspect of her life with an INTEGRITY CLEANSE. Of course, Ellie freaks out that everyone will abandon her. Could YOU do it? Wouldn't it be liberating to stop "dancing on eggshells"? We also discuss: the truth about pain, how to handle self-criticism, challenging the voices in our head, what our bodies are really trying to tell us, and how to be compassionate towards ourselves when we're mad at ourselves for how we're being so hard on ourselves (a double whammy and Ellie's longtime favorite conundrum until Martha solves it for us here. Huzzah!)
Martha's bestselling books include: Expecting Adam, Finding Your Own North Star, Steering By Starlight, and Finding Your Way in a Wild New World, and we discuss her new work of fiction: Diana, Herself: An Allegory in Awakening. Martha Beck has three degrees from Harvard. And every month we flip to Martha's column in O Magazine first.

With Blueland, I just drop the cleaning solution tablet into a Blueland “forever bottle”, add water, and voila! We’re cutting down on consumer costs, plastic waste, and carbon emissions. #250 • Who else needs a girlfriend call right about now? It's Day #6 of our Sztykiel family quarantine. It’s just been me, my handsome, funny immunocompromised husband Adam, and our preschooler and kindergartner at home. Am I losing it? A little. Is my germophobia through the roof? Absolutely. But hey! Reporter turned social media rockstar, blogger, and mother of 3 Sonni Abatta asked me to share some calmness and positivity on her podcast 30 Something with Sonni Abatta. Did I do that? Not really. BUT we did have a great time commiserating over the insanity that has wreaked havoc on our family life.

While I try to find the humor in this episode, I am keenly aware that it's a privilege to be able to spend this time together. And my heart goes out to everyone suffering during this difficult and unprecedented moment in history. This podcast was completed one hour before California Gov. Newsom issued a statewide “Stay at Home” order.

Stay safe. Stay well. Social distance!

Cozy in for this comforting chat with British zero-waste expert Tara Button, a former advertising copywriter who couldn't stomach that she was selling people stuff they didn't actually need. We discuss how to shop with a sustainable mindset, how to care for the things we already have, and her book A Life Less Throwaway: The Lost Art of Buying for Life (Ten Speed Press).

These are uncertain times. Thank you for taking precautions with your sweet families by practicing social distancing. True Botanicals Hillary Peterson is Cleaning Up the Beauty Industry | Founder, CEO

#245 • #CleanBeauty: True Botanicals CEO, founder, and mother of three HILLARY PETERSON joins us in studio for a heart-to-heart about raising a family while nurturing ambitions and the importance of educating ourselves about what dangers lurk in our skincare products.

Shortly after becoming a mother of twins Hillary was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. The experience awakened her passion for non-toxic living. Alarmed by the chemicals in leading skincare brands, she spent eight years researching a solution, which in turn became her award-winning, eco-friendly clean beauty line True Botanicals, embraced by Olivia Wilde, Laura Dern, and Zazie Beetz.

In this relaxed and warm conversation, we talk about how each of our major health crises led to vipassana meditation retreats (and laugh about what happened once we got there), confess to our guilt-ridden working mom habits, and agree that I will take the 30-something rite of passage and finally try a "face oil".

I catch myself in a moment of ‘mom judgment’ and, together, we unravel what’s really behind it. Britta also offers healing tools for mothers who have experienced trauma. And we talk about how we can effectively ask partners for what we need and not alienate them with our directness -- a lesson I keep getting to practice. How to Interrupt Your ANXIETY and Finally Calm Down with Dr. Kathleen Smith | “Everything Isn’t Terrible”

Podcast cover
Read more

#242 • Do you live with anxiety? If so, how does it show up in your relationships? For example, are you over-involved with your extended family, or do you make up excuses to avoid them?

We all have our tricks for managing anxiety. (Mine is procrastination). And psychologist Dr. Kathleen Smith, author of Everything Isn't Terrible: Conquer Your Insecurities, Interrupt Your Anxiety, and Finally Calm Down (Hachette Books, Dec 2019), encourages us to curiously examine our anxiety and our efforts to squelch it. Many of us try to control other people, myself included. "Because when we feel anxious, we often try to make other people change," she writes. "We try to calm everyone else down so we can finally relax. But if you can work on managing yourself in these relationships, it’s likely that your family, your workplace, and even the greater world will calm down a little too." So we pinpoint some ways that we can follow through on this.

Throughout the episode Dr. Kathleen Smith offers tools for how we can live a calmer, more authentic life, one that isn't defined by what other people think or feel. Sounds liberating, doesn't it?

Momboss Medley: The Three Founders of Lovevery, State Bags, Aden + Anais

Podcast cover

#237 -Listening to entrepreneur podcasts like How I Built This, I can’t help but want to dig deeper into the guest’s personal lives. I want to ask crazy questions like: When building an empire, does your husband ever feel needy or jealous of your success? Or did your withholding mother drive you to prove yourself to the world? What kind of snacks do you keep at the office? You know, questions people don’t typically ask unless they’re your close girlfriend. And while I don’t know these wildly successful founders personally, Atomic Moms podcast felt like the perfect opportunity to do that. In this compilation episode, we share highlights with three trailblazing founders: Jessica Rolph, Jacq Tatelman, and Raegan Moya-Jones. I can’t wait for you to listen.

First up, Multi-million dollar company founding social entrepreneur, and super interesting/fun mom of three JESSICA ROLPH geeks out with us over baby brain development and start up family life. Jessica co-founded and sold the #1 organic baby food company Happy Family - selling it for hundreds of millions of dollars - and is now putting her heart and soul into Lovevery, play products designed by child development experts.

Then we catch up with Jacq Tatelman, Brooklyn-based social impact entrepreneur and mom of two is co-founder and creative director of the wildly popular STATE bags and the co-creator of the non-profit foundation Country Roads Foundation, est. in 2009.

And finally, we're talking to the creative entrepreneur who put baby swaddle blankets on the map and, eh hem, in Prince George’s “coming home from the hospital” photos, Australian mother of four RAEGAN MOYA-JONES. She shares with Atomic Moms what she learned building a $100 million company Aden + Anais from her kitchen table while raising four daughters. Enjoy!
