Amy Jo's podcast is business, yes, and it's personal development, yes, but it's so powerful because it examines such a unique intersection of the two through the question of "why not now". The stories that her guests share can relate to everyone in some way, and I've been able to pull at least a little gold nugget out of every episode I've listened to. Thank you, Amy Jo!!

Podcast cover

Known as the face of the wildly successful Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Corgan, shares stories and ideas you've likely never heard. Whether you're a fan or not, this conversation will get you thinking. It's one of my favorite conversations yet. In effort to seek inspiration to write new music, Billy is spending 30 days on the road traveling in an RV to visit small towns and connect with people who see the world just a little bit differently.

Notes:

  • Billy shares a profound Why Not Now? moment when he was 25 years old. (This had me in tears.)
  • What happened the morning Billy wrote "Today" which became one of his biggest hits.
  • The ironic impact Nirvana and Pearl Jam had on Billy's personal and professional trajectory.
  • What led up to a moment when Billy unlocked his own creative genius and resulted in a decade-long creative "dizzying" run.
  • Billy's thoughts on mind over mastery and the importance of perspective.
  • The #ThirtyDays project. What it is and why Billy set out to travel the country for 30 days in an RV.
  • What Billy considers to be the measure of true spirituality.
  • Billy's literal experience of "rockstar" happiness. One of the three components of happiness according to scientists. How it evolved to a more sustainable happiness and sense of purpose.
  • Billy's creative process. How he engineers an environment that fosters a creative state.
  • How Billy views empathy and the most effective way to become empathetic.
  • Billy shares his current Why Not Now? It will take place when he turns 50 years old on March 17. 2017.
  • Billy's favorite book.
  • What keeps Billy up at night?
  • Pirates or Ninjas? Who is tougher according to Billy.
  • What advice Billy would give to his younger self.
  • What Billy would say to someone who might be experiencing a very dark moment of despair, similar to what he went through 25 years ago. (His Why Not Now? moment mentioned at the beginning of the show.)

Podcast cover
Read more

Sarah Robb O'Hagan has been described as Superwoman, undercover. She's been named one of Forbes' most powerful women in sports and one of Fast Company's most creative people in business. This woman is unmatched. She's been the global president of the $5,000,000,000 sports brand, Gatorade, where she led the business through a major repositioning and business turnaround. She has also held senior positions at Nike, Virgin Atlantic, Atari, served as the global president of Equinox and currently she's the CEO of Flywheel Sports. If there was such a thing as a resume-off, Sarah would win. There aren't too many people, if anyone, that has a portfolio of brands of this caliber that they've led, but it hasn't always been a smooth ride for Sarah. In fact, she gets squirmy when people read bios because she knows they're not the whole truth.

Sarah keeps it real in this episode. She is very candid about her career, what's gone wrong, why it went wrong, how you can leap frog her lessons and everything in between. She gives invaluable interviewing advice, and we also learn how career trajectories aren't always linear. Sarah recently called a timeout to write her book titled “ExtremeYou - Step Up. Stand Out. Kick Ass. Repeat.”, so get your pen and paper or your notes app out, because this one is stacked with takeaways.

Rank #11: Episode 78: Ellen Gustafson - The Most Important Why Not Now? You May Ever Face

Podcast cover
Read more
The Journey of "Trying" to Start a Family & An Exposé on Fertility: If you’re like me and your "Why Not Now?" is to start a family or if you’re trying to decide when would be the best time, this episode can provide powerful information to you. Ellen Gustafson and I take a critical look at the topic of fertility, the current state of the industry, the science and research that’s been done, and hasn’t been done, and the powerful (and sometimes misleading conversations) around fertility.    Personally, this isn’t something I’ve talked about before but after my experience over the past few years and listening to many other’s like my friend Ellen Gustafson, who’s shares her mind-boggling story in this episode, I thought it would be helpful. As I approach 39 years old, I've had two miscarriages and this conversation is very timely.    Ellen, who you’ll hear from, has an unprecedented experience over the course of four years that’s so hard to believe it feels like a movie script. One of my biggest takeaways is that Ellen realized her doctors simply didn’t know enough so she and her mother (who wrote hand written letters to any physicians they thought could help) took things into their own hands and uncovered answers that some of the best fertility doctors in the world hadn’t been able to find.    If you were to go online right now and start googling certain questions relative to fertility, you will find mixed answers and mixed signals from credible sources who have done scientific research! Also, we have the conversation around women choosing their careers or motherhood.   As the New York Times has reported: When women have their first child between age 25 and 35, their pay never recovers, relative to that of their husbands. Yet women who have their first baby either before 25 or after 35 — before their careers get started or once they’re established — eventually close the pay gap with their husbands. Age 25-35 prime career building years and also the time when most women want to have children. This leaves many questions and complexities.   For me, this episode is another Why Not Now? And that’s Why Not Now? open up a little more and share a glimpse into areas of my life that I haven’t shared before. I asked myself, what’s the worst thing that can happen and I couldn’t come up with a strong enough answer to not share. If this episode helps one person or couple, then it’s worth it.   About Ellen Gustafson: She’s the Co-Director of the Summit Institute, co-founder of FEED, co-founder of Food Tank and author of “We the Eaters”. She’s currently working on her second book, “Trying”.  She’s a proud Navy wife and equally proud mom.   Follow Ellen through her next book's website, (Trying), Instagram & LinkedIn

Love these!!
