Mathew Fraser (@mathewfras) is an American professional CrossFit Athlete. With a coined mantra of “Hard Work Pays Off” (HWPO), he has been a dominant force on the CrossFit Games stage since the beginning of his career defining a legacy in the sport. In 2014, his debut year at the CrossFit Games, he claimed 2nd place atop the podium and was awarded Rookie of the Year. In 2015, as the favorite to win, he claimed 2nd place again. Fraser recalls this 2015 moment not as a “win for 2nd” but a “loss for 1st”.

In 2016, Fraser hit the competition floor and took 1st place, it was the first historic victory of his career, winning by the largest margin of victory in Games History. In 2017 and 2018 Fraser repeated not only his overall finish but each year has bested his own set record for winning by the larger margin of victory in Games History. In 2016 he led by 197 points, in 2017 he led by 216 points and in 2018 he led by 220 points. Fraser holds accolades in competitive sport before his time as reigning and defending Champ in CrossFit. He is a 3x Junior National Champion Olympic Weightlifter and a former U.S. Olympic Weightlifting team hopeful. In 2008- 2009 he was a resident Athlete at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. With a return from major back surgery in 2011, he retired from his weightlifting career and has been a CrossFit athlete since 2012.

Chris Hinshaw specializes in aerobic capacity coaching and programming for CrossFit athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and sports specialists.   Hinshaw has successfully coached 28 CrossFit Games champions and his athletes have filled more than 38 podium spots since 2013.

A former All American swimmer and an experienced professional triathlete with 10 Ironman finishes with 7 Ironman’s in Kona, Hawaii.  His top international finishes include a 2nd place overall finish at the Hawaiian Ironman World Championships, 2nd place overall finish at the Ironman World Championships in Canada, and a 1st place overall finish at Ironman Brazil.  He has been a CrossFit athlete since 2008.

CrossFit Headquarters selected Coach Chris as their Subject Matter Expert (“SME”) in Aerobic Capacity.  He specializes in endurance coaching for the CrossFit athlete. Hinshaw is a founding partner of Brute Strength as well as former NorCal CrossFit coach from 2012-2018. He currently shares his coaching and endurance programming through aerobiccapacity.com and travels the world to teach his coaching methodology via his CrossFit Specialty Course: Aerobic Capacity.

Barrett has a background in the military in a tiny special forces group called CCT. Originally enlisting with a dental assistant job, he quickly realized that his personality type was closer to the special forces people he had met while he was in. As soon as he could, he signed up for the qualification and process and did whatever he had to do to make it in this elite group. 

Once the military was over for him, that personality type and drive eventually propelled him into a successful business in the clothing industry with a brand called “NFQ.” 

Not having much experience in business and partnering up with a friend with nothing more than verbal agreements eventually led him into a few problems as the business grew...

A lot happens in a small Window of time and Barret shares his experience throughout the entire ordeal. As well as sharing what he wish he would have done differently along the way.

In this episode of Barbell Shrugged, the crew talks to Marcus Filly about his history from MD to finding CrossFit and his mentor James Fitzgerald and OPEX. Through  multiple trips to the CrossFit games and a team and individual, a season in GRID, and how he began the functional bodybuilding revolution.

Marcus grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. He played multiple sports as a child including soccer, baseball and golf, which eventually led to a collegiate career in soccer at the University of California, Berkeley. There he earned his degree in Molecular and Cell Biology with an emphasis in Nutrition and Physiology. After Berkeley he complete a year of graduate work at the Ohio State University School of Medicine.

His interest in both athletics and human health and performance eventually led him to CrossFit in 2007. He has gone on to compete at the CrossFit Games 6 times, three times as an individual (2016 12th fittest) and three times as a team member (2012 6th fittest team). Marcus is also the captain and member of the Phoenix Rise in the NPGL. For two years he has been voted to the all GRID league team, in 2016 earning 1st team honors, and in 2015 earning the award for leadership excellence.

Marcus has been a health and fitness coach for 8 years since leaving Medical School in 2009. He was formerly a CrossFit facility owner for 5 years, has completed all 5 of the OPEX CCP courses, and has coached clients remotely from all over the world. He has coached athletes at the CrossFit Games as well as several Regionals athletes.

The 80/20 Nutrition protocol is the most overused saying in nutrition. It works, but you have to earn it, understand the mechanics of macros, and then you can grow into an 80/20 protocol, not start there.

Step 1: Find maintenance calories.

Step 2: Find the minimum amount of protein you need to build muscle.

Step 3: Find the minimum amount of carbohydrate you need to sustain energy

Step 4: Find minimum amount of fat you need for function, muscle repair, and energy.

Step 5: Fill in the remaining calories with whatever you want without constantly going over maintainance.

You have to earn an 80/20 lifestyle, not start there.

Cassidy Lance-McWherter  grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she began her athletic career as a gymnast. Lance earned a Division 1 athletic scholarship to the University of Washington on the gymnastics team. After multiple knee surgeries, she transitioned from gymnastic athlete to coach. During this transition period Cassidy discovered her passion for CrossFit in Texas and decided to dedicate her life to the sport. Lance competed with the NorthWest CrossFit Team at the CrossFit Games in 2010. Lance continued her CrossFit career and competed as an individual at the South Central Regionals in 2011 and 2012. Cassidy Lance placed top 3 at Regionals and qualified to the CrossFit Games in 2013 and 2014. Cassidy now competes in the GRID League and plays for the DC Brawlers, and has recently relocated to Ocala, Florida. Lance has recently opened up her own CrossFit Gym in Orlando, Florida called Waterside CrossFit where she currently trains to qualify for the CrossFit Games.

What’s the importance of squatting?

This was the title of newest episode with Ryan Fisher released. I won’t listen because I guarantee the whole episode is him talking over his guest bragging ABOUT HOW MANY FOLLOWERS HE HAS. He’s the worst. I miss Bledsoe.
