The EHG gang have been recording this podcast for almost a decade now. In podcasting terms, that makes us positivity Methuselahian. Since the start of EHG, our listeners have asked if we had a tip jar or donation system and we'd look at each other and say surely that is a joke, people don't pay other people to do podcasts. We'd email them back "Ha ha ha, good one, Chet" and go about our business. Now we are told this is a real thing that real nice people do. Value for value? In today's topsy turvy world? It's madness but that good kind of madness, like when you wake up a 3:15am and clean your house. Or something. Our esteemed colleague John returns for an overview of spring TV: the shows we can't wait to see or be reunited with; the shows we SHOULD be psyched about, but aren't; and the shows noooooobody should go anywhere near. We went around the dial with 13 Reasons Why, Tara's favorite show Legion, teen clam enthusiasts, and the end of Review before John Potts went the extra light-year with his Deep Space Nine Canon submission. Senior citizens both won and lost, before a Game Time had us all trying to guess the hearts of IMDb searchers. We're watering the seeds of chang...ing the channel in an all-new Extra Hot Great.

Dan Rogge bought a ticket for our latest episode on HBO's Run, a "comedy thriller" about college sweethearts trying to reunite. Does the pleasure of watching Merritt Wever and Archie Punjabi at work outweigh the credibility issues? Do phones in the Run-verse never need charging? And is Rich Sommer TV's worst husband? We super-sized Around The Dial with stops at The Baker And The BeautyBoschThe Good FightSesame StreetMoney HeistThe Valhalla MurdersDevs, and Picard. And we chased that with a Sean double: first, whether he's a crackpot for thinking streaming services should offer a single-storyline watching option; and then his Canon pitch for the virulently catchy America's Next Top Model episode, "Game." New guest and certified Canadian Alex Collins sits with the panel for a discussion of Netflix's "gritty" take on Canadian kiddie-lit classic Anne Of Green Gables, and how it fares compared with the Megan Follows classic of yesteryear. We went around the dial with The Mick, a documentary about anxiety, a daytime courtroom show (spoiler: Dave WILL hate this), and Downward Dog's fleas before we came to bury Nate, not to praise him during Alex's Six Feet Under Canon submission. As HBO's obsession-inducing dystopia returns for a second season, Eve Batey also returns to discuss reflections on capitalism; college-dorm philosophizing; why wigs are still shite in the future; and whether Ed Harris is using a stunt double. It's time once again to consider nominees for the Nonac -- the opposite of the EHG Canon, where the worst-ever episodes of otherwise-good shows reside. After Dave clarified a point of Nonac law, we turned our attention to the "disgusting clothing" and ridiculous challenge in a ninth-season Project Runway; remembered how much we hated stupid Nick, Kalinda's stupid husband, on The Good Wife; failed to take Joey Potter's mugging plight seriously on Dawson's Creek; and said nice things about James Van Der Beek, Michael Kors, and soft-serve ice cream. What's not to love about a crafting competition show hosted by Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman? Wellll, Linda Holmes and the regulars could think of a few things, but our nitpicks stem almost entirely from liking the show and wanting it to be its best, punniest self. We talk host bits, judging inconsistencies, the comparison of apples to macrame, and there's even Sarah's obligatory semi-annual reference to Work Of Art. We go Around The Dial with Queer Eye, Kids Baking Championship, The Bletchley Circle: Mission Burrito (...okay, it's actually "San Francisco," but we like Dave's name better), and Trial & Error before Linda serves a warrant for inducting Brooklyn Nine-Nine into The Canon. Deadwood won (maybe; we'll see), networks' lip service to survivors and equal pay lost, and we entered the valley of the shadow of unbelievable/y crappy shows with Dan Cassino's Trough TV Game Time. 310: The Real Upstart Crowives Of The Outer Banks

Podcast cover
Read more

Esteemed recent guests Stephanie Green, Dan Cassino, and Richard Lawson each picked out an episode for your three panelists to watch for Episode 310's Forcening. First into the breach was David T. Cole, ordered by Stephanie to watch a fourth-season Real Housewives Of Potomac episode involving purse-smacking, (alleged) sausage-sucking, and how long after the stated start time one should arrive at a party -- and we also discussed the underwhelming interior-design narratives of so-called rich people. Next up was Buntsy's foray into Dan's "what if Shakespeare, but a laugh-tracked sitcom" mission for her, Upstart Crow's episode on the writing of Hamlet and the (convenient?) murder of Christopher Marlowe. Was her admiration for the propmaster's novelty-Tudor-London-keychain work enough to win her over, or is the show for those Columbia professors who always got to the art-house movie late and spent the whole time laughing performatively at the jokes? Lastly, Richard told Tara to dive into Outer Banks and its punchable-face-of-voice-over protagonist. Is a shipwreck mystery the right plot for a teen show? And does that matter if all the "teens" look 28? Grab a butter knife and cut into an all-new Extra Hot Great.

Vanity Fair's Richard Lawson returns to the pod for the first time since Mark 1 to talk about an equally old-timey take on a beloved character: HBO's dark take on Perry Mason before he became the gold standard of TV defense attorneys. Is this imagining of his life before Raymond Burr canonical? Did we need to see that level of post-violence gore? And does EVERY cell of this show's being hate the LAPD? (Not that we're complaining about that.) Then we went Around The Dial with Sherman's ShowcaseLegendaryTaste The Nation, and Lenox Hill, and Richard announced Tara's upcoming Forcening before humming a few bars of "La Vie En Ro" in his Sopranos Canon presentation. Stephanie Early Green returns to talk about Trackers, the 2019 South African "thriller" that Cinemax has imported. Unfortunately, the only place it led the EHG panel was Dullsville, despite big game, gun battles, and the apparent love child of Christian Bale and Randall Batinkoff...but we did talk about the "COVID programming trough" that's rapidly approaching for all TV fans. Later, we went Around The Dial with Love LifeMarried At First Sight AustraliaPlease Like Me13 Reasons Why's final season, and Disney Gallery Colon The Mandalorian; then we wondered what themed episode titles would look like for series that don't already have them in David Ellis Dickerson's Extra Credit. 302: I Know This Much Is True Is Misery Porn

We hope Bobby Krut agrees to come BACK to Extra Hot Great after putting him through the unrelenting barrage of anguish that is HBO's latest limited series, I Know This Much Is True. Sure, the acting is good; yeah, it's impressive that Mark Ruffalo plays twins; not one of us is planning to keep watching, because there's never a break or a moment of levity, and even Dave's ice-cream-fixins-bar metaphor made us sad. Our trip Around The Dial made us MAD, mostly -- Tara was disgusted with Regular Heroes, Sarah was disappointed in American Experience's Dubya-sode, and Dave was not a crackpot about The Good Fight's failure to understand electricity -- but at least Bobby brought in the Antenna TV Comfort Blanket roster to cheer us up. Jeff's Extra Credit saw us rewriting well-regarded series finales with How I Met Your Mother-style bungling, before we headed to the polls for Bobby's Canon submission, NewsRadio's "President" episode. Guy Fieri won (for once), Lori Loughlin lost (again), and the competition got feverish during Game Time. Give yourselves a hand for listening to an all-new Extra Hot Great!

Just a few short weeks after we tested our knowledge of Quibi titles in Game Time, Quibi is taking center stage: the platform has launched, and we have selected a total of eight of its 24 launch titles to discuss with returning guest Adam Sternbergh! For his Extra Credit topic, John C. challenges us to reimagine single-camera comedies as multi-cams. Adam makes the case for our inducting Cheer's series premiere, "God Blessed Texas," into the Canon. Then after naming the week's Winner and Loser, it's on to a Game Time that's a little objectionable. Settle in for the long haul and join us!

SUPPORT EHG ON PATREON

The EHG gang have been recording this podcast for almost a decade now. In podcasting terms, that makes us positively Methuselahian. In all seriousness, we are humbled by your continued prodding to get a Patreon page up for EHG and here it is! Extra Hot Great on Patreon

296: Will Heidi And Tim's New Fashion Show Be Making The Cut?

Podcast cover
Read more

One half of the GFY brain trust, Heather Cocks, came back to discuss Amazon's Project Runway with a big-budget twist: Making The Cut. As much as we love Naomi Campbell's sugar-free approach to, well, life, the panel agreed that Making The Cut has some structural problems (too long; dumb Tim 'n' Heidi "friend dates"), and too tight a focus on NOT being a sewing competition. Will any of us keep watching? You'll find out before we decide whether Emily Is Not A Crackpot for wanting period shows to air period commercials. We'll go Around The Dial with Call The Midwife content warning, the return of One Day At A TimeBarry, homemade Lego Masters spinoffs, Top Chef, and a Better Call Saul sound drop; later, we'll feel relieved that the Sherlock episode we all THOUGHT Erica presented as a Canon contender is actually for the Nonac. Kate McKinnon won, celebrity quarantine-busters lost, and Game Time stretched those family ties (sha la la laaaaa). Tick tock: it's an all-new Extra Hot Great.

294: Warming Up To Little Fires Everywhere

Appointment Television's Margaret H. Willison put a marshmallow on a stick to talk about Hulu's Little Fires Everywhere, and whether THIS is the real "vanity-free performance" on Reese Witherspoon's recent résumé, plus Kerry Washington's interesting choices as Mia; the production's unwavering commitment to 1997-ness; and whether the male Dawson's Creek lead we'd have bought in the Bill role is actually Dawson himself. Tara refused to be labeled a crackpot for thinking Mike Schur's upcoming philosoph...omedy? book is going to join its "humorous"-essay brethren in sucking, and then we went Around The Dial with Black MondayThe BachelorWork In ProgressPlease Like Me, an Evil Lunch Bunch concept, Project Runway, and an Amazing Stories update. Margaret couldn't help but wonder if a second-season Sex & The City would make it into the Canon, and after Laura Benanti was a winner and most TV productions were quarantined losers, the Game Time question was Quibi Or Not Quibi?. This all-new Extra Hot Great's got dial-up; listen now!

Apple TV+ has brought Amazing Stories, the less-nihilistic take on The Twilight Zone, back for all the '80s kids, though confusingly premiered this anthology series with only one episode. Around The Dial takes us through For Life; a roundup of the series premieres on FX (and FX on Hulu): DevsBreeders, and DaveJersey Shore: Family Vacation; and Season 3 of Babylon Berlin. 292: Playing Games With Dispatches From Elsewhere

Podcast cover
Read more

AMC already had a perfectly good Charlie Kaufman-esque property, but the network went with Dispatches From Elsewhere over Lodge 49 -- and while it's kind of Sarah's dream to fall into an alternate-reality scavenger hunt, first-time guest Dave Chen felt like the show would be more fun to "play" than to watch. Is it too twee? Too slow? Too divorced from the reality of non-celebrities? Or do the excellent cast and the In Search Of… graphics make it all worthwhile? Then we went Around The Dial with Love Is Blind, The Outsider, Teen Mom: Young and Pregnant, A French Village, and second-rate American TV in East Africa before Dave Cole declared transparent computer screens NOT the wave of the future. Dave Chen tried to give the Canon a bear hug by submitting the first-season finale of Succession for the Canon. Trebek won, disgracios lost (again), and IMDb throuples tested our wits during Game Time. Don't miss this dispatch from your podcast app; it's an all-new Extra Hot Great!
