Rank #2: Ep 78 | Gym Owner Roundtable

Podcast cover
Read more
A departure from my typical Skype interview, today’s episode is all about gym owners sitting around, shooting the s%&t. This week we’re joined by some of the 321Go team - Stefan Cox from CrossFit Turbine, Don Moss from CrossFit Apogee, Ashley Bacsu from CrossFit 317, and Jamie Gallagher from CrossFit Burke.

We chat about the importance of finding other entrepreneurs to share the struggle, hiring and firing staff, and finally viewing yourself as a professional business (and charging accordingly).

WARNING: As you can imagine getting a bunch of gym owners in the same room can get a bit colorful. Today’s episode is slightly less PG-13 than our usual format.

Awareness

Ep 147 | Wesley Hamilton - Disabled But Not Really

Podcast cover
Read more

Wes was walking to his car to visit an old girlfriend one afternoon. He heard something behind him as he was approaching the vehicle and spun around to see a man he'd never seen before walking toward him. This stranger shot Wes in the abdomen multiple times. Several days later, Wes awoke to find out he'd likely never walk again.

And he's grateful it happened to him. In his words: "becoming disabled saved my life."

To be honest, I started this show as another "here's how to start an Adaptive Athlete program" show; just another litany of tactical bullet points from landing page to coaches' pay. Ten minutes into the show I knew we'd never get there. We'd never get there because the answer to "how do I ____?" is embedded in Wesley's story. How?

How do you respond to adversity? Is difficulty an opportunity or an obstacle? Are you afraid to take massive action toward your goals for fear of failure?

Sometimes we need a massive wake-up call. Sometimes tragedy is the only thing that gets us out of our own way. But, it doesn't have to be. We can choose to look at the world differently; to see a competitor moving in down the street as a chance to refine your product; that problem coach as a way to define and stick to your core values; another month in the red as a sign that things need to change.

So, the answer to "how do I start an adaptive athlete program?" (or barbell club, or kids program, or corporate wellness, or whatever) should actually be: "How do I respond to the unknown? To failure? To an obstacle?" With a shift in mindset, you can start anything.

What is a Win-Win-Win in your business?
After a recent article - "Leave No Client Behind" - made its way around the inter webs, I received a TON of requests to have Patty on the show. Well, here it is.
Patty is an OG in the CrossFit world, as you'll hear in some of his stories. He's tried every potential business model, but always found it lacking in one of three areas: profitability for the business, opportunity for coaches, and sustainability for clients. He's landed on what he believes to be optimal solutions on all three fronts.
After earning his mechanical engineering degree, working for two Fortune 100 companies in business development, and starting a green building design firm from scratch, Patty decided to try his hand in the fitness industry.
Patty opened the world’s fifth CrossFit affiliate and Canada’s first in Vancouver in 2004. He was mentored directly by CrossFit Founder Greg Glassman from 2004 to 2009 and because of this relationship with Greg, Patty’s gym “always looked different."
