One major mistake Sellers make is ordering the incorrect amount of products for the amount of sales they expect to do. This blunder can be crucial to whether or not time and money are wasted, especially for Amazon Sellers just starting out. Using data and realistic expectations can help Sellers to calculate how much inventory to order. Sellers can then make smarter ordering decisions to decrease unnecessary costs and learn how to properly scale their business.

Amazon likes for Sellers to have at least 30 days worth of inventory at any given time for better rankings, so it is important to take things like manufacturing time, shipping time, expected sales per day, and your competition into account when making ordering decisions.

Another mistake Sellers make is focusing on small things when they should be concentrating on things like sourcing products and paying attention to market trends. Finding trustworthy sources for products can affect your bottom line just as much as sales, so focus on getting the best product for the best price.

Additionally, Sellers should focus on their long-term goals for their Amazon business and create a plan that is not just for short-term profit, but also for growing the business and looking many years down the road.

BSR numbers also may not matter as much as you think when it comes to selecting your products. While there are many great tools for evaluating BSR, these numbers can fluctuate and be affected by many outside factors, so concentrating on the quality and keyword demand of your products should be your more influential deciding factors.

In terms of competitiveness on Amazon and the aptly named Amazon Gold Rush time period of yesteryear, opportunities have grown exponentially for Amazon Sellers, but the selling landscape has changed dramatically as new players around the world (particularly China) have come into play.

Making money hand over fist the easy way is no longer the standard, and Sellers have to put more effort into their business to be at the top of their respective fields. However, those who treat Amazon like a real business and learn great skills such as correctly choosing products, launching products, and staying current with selling trends will be rewarded.

Perhaps the most prominent mistake among Sellers is the mismanagement of cash flow, whether it’s the initial investment into the business or managing the money made from profits. A great rule of thumb to follow is to always invest 2 to 3 times as much as you think you need to begin if you truly want to scale your business. The reason for this increase in investment is to account for all the other little costs, ranging from having your next batch of inventory ready to shipping costs. If you haven’t invested enough, you may find yourself in the red quickly.

A great bonus hack that Sellers can use to help scale their business utilizes creativity and abstract thinking regarding large items and gaining the skills necessary to sell them effectively. There are many benefits to selling large items that many Sellers don’t consider including less competition, fewer reviews required, and less number of units needed to be sold.

EP5: Amazon Private Label – How to Get Started and Why You Should Do It Now

Wondering how to get started selling on Amazon and why you should do it? Great! Read along as Manny Coats explains the first steps you should take in order to start an Amazon private labeling business.

Manny’s short-term goal is to make $25,000 in sales in the first 90 days of his Amazon business. For transparency sake, it is important to make a distinction between sales and profits. There are too many people boasting their sales numbers without openly disclosing the actual profits that revenue generated. So to make it crystal-clear, we’re shooting for $25K in revenue, not profits. We’ll discuss the profits that revenue represents in later posts.

It didn’t take Manny very long to get his first product listed on Amazon, and it generated about $2,000 in sales on the first week with no marketing and only one 5-Star review. It is a very niche product most people don’t even know exist. We’ll be discussing more results with this product later on after we deploy some marketing campaigns for it, but this quick example goes to show you about the power of tapping into the “Amazon Machine”.

FACTOIDS ABOUT AMAZON

– Jeff Bezos (Founder of Amazon) first named his online bookstore Cadabra but dropped the name as it was often confused for “Cadaver”
Relentless.com was one of the other possible names for Amazon. (Try it on your browser)
– Back in 1994 when Amazon.com was registered online listings were mainly alphabetical. Bezos wanted a word starting with “A” that would convey the size of the “Biggest Bookstore on Earth”. He found Amazon was one of the biggest rivers on earth and he decided to register Amazon.com

Why Amazon Private Labeling?

Selling on Amazon is one of the few businesses you can start with very little capital and have the infrastructure of a multi-million dollar company at your disposal. You can start with a product you’re passionate about and focus your business around that (and you get to be your own boss!). Best of all, you’re not restricted to one product or one brand, by leveraging the infrastructure Amazon has made available to sellers you can scale quite quickly through pay per click advertising or other advertising channels.

When Manny was first thinking about selling on Amazon one of his friends recommended he start out without a professional account. In fact, he made it sound like it was super-easy to get started. After doing some research, Manny realized it’s not as easy as his friend made it seem (specially when you sell in large volume).

Creating Your Seller Account

The first thing to do if you’re serious about private labeling is to create your professional seller account on Amazon Seller Central. There are several reasons for getting a professional account, some of the more important reasons are: reduced fees, and the ability to become a “Featured Merchant”. As of the time of this writing, there is a $39.99 fee to become a professional seller; this fee pays for itself by selling 40 items per month. Hopefully you’re not getting in business to sell 40 items per month (unless you’re real estate, fine arts, or exotic cars dealer); so the $39.99 should be a no-brainer. The fact of the matter is, starting a business takes capital, be sure to invest in the right tools and services that will help you succeed. Your Amazon Pro Seller account is one of them.

Personal Name or Company Name?

When creating your account you will be asked for the name or entity that owns the account. You have a decision to make here; will you go with your personal name, or create a legal entity for this new business?

Let me be clear and say I’m not an attorney or an accountant, nor I play one on TV, but I can tell you I run my businesses under LLCs. These legal entities help you protect your personal assets in case of lawsuits, and can also provide some tax advantages. Of course, I highly recommend you consult with your lawyer and accountant before making this very important decision.

Congratulations! You now have a Professional Seller account on Amazon… The next step is to find products to sell, but how?

How to Find Products to Sell on Amazon

The first thing to do is product selection. Is there a market, or product you’re passionate about? Are you into specific sports or hobbies such as horseback riding, backpacking, and canoeing? If you manage to find a business you have a passion for, things tend to be easier, but (and this is a BIG but), do not go into business just because you have a passion for the niche. You must be sure it is a viable and profitable business; after all, passion doesn’t pay the bills. (For most people.)

It’s also important to keep your eyes open for opportunities; some products are not going to fall into your passions. Chances are you won’t even use (or like) some of the best products you find; the important part is not whether you like it, need it or use it, what matters is if other people (hopefully a big number of people) like, need and use your product.

If you train your brain to look for product opportunities, you’ll start having product ideas everywhere you go. As you go about your day, look for things around you. Make a list of the ideas you have during the day (I recommend EverNote for all your note taking needs.) Once you have a nice list going, check Amazon for these, and similar, products.

Amazon will even make your research job easier by recommending related products. For example: if you were to start your search looking for headphones, you could, hypothetically, see that there are shower speakers in the related product section. Clicking into those shower speakers could then produce results related to “bathroom products” that could lead you to find a cool bathroom product with high margins, low competition that you can source on Alibaba.com. Boom! You have your first viable product idea.

Product ideas can literally come from everywhere. Keep your eyes open and take notice of products being used and/or being advertised all around you. If you’re at the dentist or getting an oil change, you could flip through magazines and pay attention to the ads. If your kids are watching TV, notice what type of toys and games are being advertised during the breaks. Can’t sleep at night? Check out what the shopping networks are selling. Wasting time on social media? Check out what your friends are doing, and pay special attention to the products your friends use.

If you find a product you find interesting, you can then look for a way to source a similar product, or a product that helps the same audience in a different way.

The ideas I just shared with you work, even if you’re not working; but if you want to actively research products, Amazon.com is a great tool as well. Amazon has categories that update very frequently that help us know what’s hot right now. You can find those listings here:

Most of these pages can be filtered by categories and sub-categories, so if you’re looking for products on specific categories, these pages are great!

Another fantastic way of using Amazon.com for our research is the search bar. If you type a generic search on Amazon, you’ll notice there’s a dropdown with more specific search term suggestions. These suggestions can help you come up with product ideas, and have the added benefit that these suggestions are being generated because consumers are actively searching for those terms on Amazon.

PRO Tip: Think Ahead!

As you conduct your research think ahead. Once your first product succeeds, can you come up with related products to sell under the same brand? Having a collection of tightly related products can help you in the long run because Amazon will suggestive-sell your products from within each of the products’ listings. Another added benefit of having a collection of tightly related products is that it increases the chance that a big company will make an acquisition offer to buy your business for a nice payday.

Thinking ahead is great, but remember, focus is key at the beginning. Go through the motions, get your product out there, promote it, get reviews for it and make some sales. None of this will ever happen unless you get started. What are you waiting for?

New Cerebro Keyword Research Method That Works – AMPM Podcast EP 194

While it may seem like a lifetime ago, Manny Coats debuted the CPR Method of performing product launches through targeted keyword research and marketing to climb to the top of the Amazon rankings for your product niche.

A lot of things have changed in the last year, and so too has Amazon updated its Terms of Service and rules governing how sellers can operate on its platform.

In episode 194 of the AMPM Podcast, host Manny Coats discusses this Cerebro-based keyword research method with Helium 10 Operations Manager Bradley Sutton that will help you identify which keywords are helping the most successful listings SELL PRODUCTS.

Since the keyword research method has yet to be named, let’s call it Method X (I know, original).

For a long time, Manny had suggested people go to either Magnet or Cerebro from Helium 10 to discover new keywords and spy on competitor keywords, respectively. The tried-and-true way was to target keywords based on their sheer search volume on Amazon by customers.

Now the paradigm has shifted, as data from Cerebro has revealed a way of finding keywords that SELL rather than just by search volume. In our experience, we have found keywords that didn’t have tremendous search volume overall but were converting.

Through a new feature available in Cerebro, users can search a keyword and find the top 30 products ranking for that keyword, and then compare up to 10 ASINs in detail to discover other similarities and strategies among the top competitors for a specific niche.

How to Use Stock Photos for Amazon and Mailers for Reviews – AMPM Podcast EP 192

Using high-quality professional product photography is quintessential to your product getting noticed and purchased on Amazon but being able to afford stock photos for Amazon can be a challenge for some new sellers.

If your product also needs images for its packaging, that can incur additional costs. One major thing to be careful about when finding images on the Internet is to ensure it is not copyrighted so the legal owner doesn’t take legal action against you.

Additionally, if you are looking for better ways to advertise to your customers, sending out a message to your customer base via mail (not email, but as a physical message in an envelope) is more personalized and on par with major retailers everywhere with a mailing list.

In episode 192 of the AMPM Podcast, host Manny Coats reveals some money-saving tips for getting high-quality, royalty-free stock photos for Amazon as well as advice on how to reach your target audiences with mailers.

If you need to use stock imagery for edited lifestyle photography or product packaging, there are a few options out there.

Of course, if websites like Shutterstock is out of your current price range per month, Unsplash.com offers many high-quality photos available to be used for your purposes for free under creative commons, meaning they can be used without paying the owner.

A common misconception among new sellers is that just because it says you can use it for free, there is no risk in using images from stock websites. Always be sure to read the fine print because some images will require special licenses to be used commercially for profit.

Manny also discusses using physical postcards sent in the mail to your customers to thank them for their business and request a review via AMZ Print Mail. However, this method should be used with care in how it’s worded to prevent you from violating Amazon Terms of Service.

Email Follow-Up: How to Stay Amazon TOS Compliant + Personal Questions – AMPM Podcast EP 191

On Podcast EP 191, host Manny Coats talks about how the recent Amazon TOS relate to reviews and even answers a few personal questions!

A few weeks ago, we talked about sneaky ways to gain Amazon reviews that may get you banned so you know which tactics to AVOID. If you missed that episode, check it out here.

Since then, a lot of you have asked for clarification on Amazon’s TOS surrounding reviews and email follow-up so you can gain reviews fast without getting your account banned.

So what’s Amazon’s stance on reviews nowadays?

“After an order is completed, Amazon automatically sends an email to buyers asking them to leave a review and provide feedback. Additionally, you are allowed to send 1 email per order to request a customer review.”

If you send out more than 1 email to elicit a customer review, it may be time to reconsider your email follow up strategy and change it to be more compliant with the current verbiage in Amazon’s Customer review guidelines.

“If you decide to ask a buyer to provide a customer review, you cannot ask only for a positive review, nor can you request reviews solely from buyers who have had a positive experience.”

If you use tricky wording to segment your customers into reviews and customer feedback, it’s important to note that you’re blatantly violating Amazon’s TOS. You also cannot contact Amazon customers and request that they remove a review. Maybe you’re asking yourself, “but what if I solve their problem or send them a replacement following a negative review?” If you do so, you STILL cannot follow back up to ask them to change their review.

The second half of the podcast was an opportunity to answer all your personal questions for Manny. Questions like:

Recently, Amazon updated their Terms of Service regarding the acceptable ways of getting Amazon reviews on products. This update has eliminated the use of some old tried and true tactics sellers have used to get reviews either ahead of the product launch or in large quantities.

How much is your Amazon packaging really costing you?

Do you have to pay extra per unit when you ship and store your products due to Amazon packaging size stipulations? Your product’s dimensions and weight can have a significant impact on your cost per unit, but there are ways to help you save money when evaluating your product’s size class with Amazon.

Many new sellers may not be aware that if your product crosses over from being a Standard sized item to being Oversized, the cost can rise. For example, going from a Large Standard sized box to a Small Oversize box (over 18 inches in length, width, height, or a combination of all three) can carry a hefty jump in cost per unit.

Oversized products typically cost more to store in Amazon’s warehouses via the FBA system, so trying to stay under the threshold if at all possible can save you large sums of money each year.

Also, Manny discusses how the weight of products can have a great influence on the cost to ship from your supplier to the warehouse. The Amazon keyword search algorithm has turned into more of an “Amazon search shuffle,” providing sellers with different data across different locations and browsers.

There seems to be something fishy going on with Amazon keyword search results, and we aim to find out what’s going on!

Lately, we’ve been getting questions about discrepancies in Amazon keyword search data from some of our users through tools like Keyword Tracker by Helium 10. Users will claim that their keyword ranking results will vary wildly for some critical terms at different time intervals. Sometimes a seller will be ranked fairly high, and then at other times not appear in the keyword search results at all.

CHECK OUT KEYWORD TRACKER AND THE HELIUM 10 TOOL SUITE

Helium 10 derives its data estimations from detectable Amazon trends and other factors, so the variance in search results are coming from Amazon, not any tool bug. The only thing we aren’t certain of is WHY it’s happening, but we have a few educated guesses.

In episode 185 of the AMPM Podcast, host Manny Coats has a discussion with Helium 10 team members Bradley Sutton (Operations Manager) and Bojan Gajic (Chief Technology Officer and Head of Engineering) about this Amazon keyword search data debacle.

The Amazon Search Shuffle

The Helium 10 team has coined the phrase, “Amazon Search Shuffle” to describe the phenomenon (just don’t use the abbreviation, it sounds silly).

The shuffling started around mid-August 2018 when we noticed the difference in data that would happen within different locations and different browsers. The data inconsistency even occurs in the same browser or location, but a just different time of the day.

It’s as if there were two separate catalogs or realities that Amazon was toggling between back and forth.

The last time something like this happened was in November 2017 for a few days. There were rumors behind the scenes at the time that Amazon was testing a new catalog or prematurely pushed to production an algorithm update.

Whatever the case, they put everything back after a few days, and the data stabilized again. The difference this time is that now these variations have been happening for a month now.

Bojan explains in detail his experience with these changes to Amazon’s algorithm and offers his insight into what the future may hold for Amazon keyword search data consistency.

Bradley points out how anyone can see the results that we are witnessing by trying to see the same data across different locations and browsers.

How Helium 10 Is Navigating the Issue

Helium 10 would like to emphasize that if you are using our tools and are experiencing wildly varied search results, it has to do the algorithmic changes Amazon is currently making and not an error with our system.

We have also been able to normalize the results for many users, but until the issue is resolved on Amazon’s side, you will still see this search result variance on some ASINs.

One reason that you can see this variance in our tool and not others is that if you have the boost feature turned on, Helium 10 is going out and checking your rank every hour as opposed to other tools that might only check once a day or every few days.

For example, users that utilize our Boost feature (which checks rank every hour, whereas other tools only check once a day or every other day) on Keyword Tracker may notice the data differences more readily because of the more frequent updates.

Could you be getting inaccurate Amazon sales estimates with the 999 Amazon shopping cart trick?

Some may remember this old inventory hack in the early days of the AMPM Podcast to see how much inventory your competitors had left for their products.

The basic idea was that you visit a listing and add the product to your Amazon shopping cart. You also set the item quantity to 999, and if the seller did not possess that many items in his or her inventory, Amazon would alert you and tell you how many units of the product were left. You would effectively spy on a competitor and find out how much was left in their stock for that particular ASIN.

While it may seem like a clever Amazon competitor analysis idea, this spying activity may actually bring you more trouble than it’s worth.

Can Amazon A/B testing your images prevent wasted time and money before the product launch?

In today’s episode of the AMPM Podcast, Manny discusses the importance of getting your primary image right to increase conversions for your listing and prompt Amazon to feature your product marketing more often.

However, how do you know the image you attached to your product listing is a good one? Amazon A/B testing, of course! While Amazon Central does allow sellers to split test images, it must be done while the product listing is live. This situation is not ideal since you are potentially wasting money on an ineffective image that is all over your marketing material.

Fortunately, there is a way to split test your product thumbnail before you invest a lot of money on the product launch and risk low conversions. Pickfu provides a service that lets you perform Amazon split testing on images for a nominal fee to pollsters.

Additionally, Pickfu provides analytics on the results and reveals critical data on the demographics of the participants and what they chose. This data is invaluable when choosing an image to use that appeals to your target audience both on your listing and your marketing efforts.

While a rare occurrence, new sellers have been known to sweep in and totally dominate their niches. However, achieving this feat never comes easy and can only be done by choosing a solid product to source and employing a winning strategy on Amazon.

In episode 178 of the AMPM Podcast, host Manny Coats interviews Amazon seller Janine Hong, a relative newcomer to the Amazon world that has absolutely crushed it by using a unique Amazon sponsored ad strategy and leveraging the power of the Helium 10 tools suite. She has advocated the significant role that Helium 10 has played in her growth as an Amazon business owner.
