We have the top five commonly asked questions from patients today! Dr. Tim Flynn is out celebrating his 35th anniversary with his wife, so The Real Brian fills in to help Dr. Jeff Moore answer some of these commonly heard and very important questions that patients typically ask. Our discussion today culminates a lot what we talk about on Pain Reframed into one episode, hitting on some of the essentials!

  1. Are you guys saying that damaged structures in our body never cause pain?
  2. You hear that pain comes from the brain. How can I manage and even sort of control the pain with my mind?
  3. If the "issue isn't in the tissue" why do treatments that are directed towards the tissue often help temporarily?
  4. I’m wanting to take a more conservative approach to my treatment. How do I talk to my doctor if she seems biased towards medication and surgery?
  5. What are the best ways to exercise, move, strength-train, etc?

Rank #10: 101: It's Up to the Patient | Dr. David Hanscom

Podcast cover
Read more

This week on the Pain Reframed podcast, Dr. David Hanscom joins Tim Flynn and Jeff Moore to discuss the strategies he uses to help chronic pain patients, and why recovery is ultimately in the hands of the patient, not the clinician. Dr. Hanscom is an orthopedic complex spinal deformity surgeon who now understands that most chronic pain from any source is solvable – usually without surgery. He is the creator of the DOC (Direct your Own Care) program, which is the subject of his book, Back in Control: A Surgeon’s Roadmap out of Chronic Pain. He also publishes a weekly blog and maintains a website, www.backincontrol.com, to provide resources for chronic pain patients and their families. Dr. Hanscom distinguishes himself from many spine surgeons in that he strongly encourages non-surgical solutions for his patients, a belief which stems from his own battle with chronic pain.

Justin shares his experience in going through the ISPI Pain Certification program and how it helped him and changed the way he manages pain.  The ISPI Pain Certification Program was instrumental in teaching Justin ways to take the ideas on pain management and apply it in a framework that works for him and his patients.

Rank #13: 109. The Answers Aren't All in the Brain | Dr. Judy Grisel

Podcast cover
Read more

We have the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Judy Grisel for a particularly emotional episode of Pain Reframed this week. She shares her personal struggle with addiction, the havoc it wreaked on her life and relationships, and what it was that eventually got through to her and convinced her to get sober. She also discusses how she's helping her own daughter avoid making the same mistakes, using techniques we can all implement, both in our clinics and in our personal lives.

Dr. Judy Grisel is a behavioral neuroscientist whose research focuses on determining root causes of drug addiction. She studies sex differences in the role of stress and endorphins on drug reward and works to identify innate factors that contribute to individual differences in the liability toward addiction.

In addition to being a professor and researcher, Judy is a New York Times bestselling author. Her book, Never Enough, uses her past as an addict to explore the neuroscience behind how drugs work, the changes they cause in the brain, and where we might be able to find the cure to today's addiction epidemic. It's a powerful piece that we recommend for all clinicians who work with current or recovering addicts.

Do you have a question for Judy that you'd like her to answer on another episode of Pain Reframed? Send us a DM on Twitter, post it in the Pain Reframed Facebook group, or email Liz Peppin at lizpeppinmqt@gmail.com.
