My guest is Cody Byrns. Cody is an award-winning speaker and a #1 best-selling author. He’s also the founder of The Cody Byrns Foundation for Burn Survivors. Now, he’ll be the first to tell you that this wasn’t originally what he thought he’d be doing with his life. He was a youth pastor and an award-winning juggler. But in May of 2013, Cody’s life was drastically changed.

Cody's book
While he was stopped at a red light on the highway, Cody was rear-ended by a box-truck that failed to stop. He was considered dead on the scene… but even though he was pinned inside a crumpled vehicle and everyone assumed no one could survive… some quick-acting first responders saw his hand move. They took action and miraculously… they were able to extract him and save his life.
Cody received many injuries that day, including severe burns to almost 40% of his body.
After years of countless surgeries and rehabilitation, Cody has chosen to not allow his scars to keep him bound in bitterness and defeat. Instead, he uses his story to uplift others. His vision is to help people live free from the bonds of scars (physical and emotional), equipping others with the proper steps to walk out of their past hurt and defeat and run towards their God-given potential.
In the interview, we talk about:
How to let go of our scars (physical and emotional)
Where to focus when you’re hurting
How to create a NEW game plan
How to find mentors
How to forgive
That’s right. We also talk about the power of forgiveness in this podcast.
And in a raw and real way… we even talk about how Cody did the unthinkable with the distracted driver who changed his life forever.
It’s an episode you’re not going to want to miss!

Year of No Fear with Mitch Matthews

Year of No Fear with Mitch Matthews

I'm Mitch Matthews and we're declaring 2019 as the "Year of No Fear."  I know that's a bold statement but I believe this is the year to break free from worry and fear!  So let's do this.
Listen To The Podcast:
I think we need to draw a line in the sand and say, if fear is holding you back in any way, I want to say this is the year we bust through that together. I hope you're with me on this. Here's the thing, if you don't deal with worry, God bless you. That's fantastic. Maybe you don't need this episode, maybe you should just listen to this episode for those other people in the world, because there's plenty of them. I can tell you that the stats show that we get nailed by worry a lot. A lot of people get worried, a lot. They get hit by it. In fact, 72% of the American population, the workforce in America, says they're impacted by worry. 70%, the last was 72 ... 70% say that they lost sleep due to worry. 82%, get this, 82% of primary care visits are stress and worry related in the United States. How crazy is that? I just gave you something new to worry about. How about that?

Here's the thing is that I know for a fact that fear, in the past at least, has held me back. I know, with talking to so many different people about going after their dreams. Dreams that people are passionate about, people are excited about, all of that. I've seen fear kill more dreams before they get started, but also as they're launching, as they start to actually have success. I've seen fear sneak in, and steal it. Either shut down the dream or steal away the joy. I've experienced it myself. I've seen it in others. And I've just decided, you know what, as Dream, Think, Doers, I want to make 2019 the year of no fear. We're not going to do this perfectly, but just think about it. Just think of a year where we are beating back fear with a stick. Specifically worry, right. We are going to be able to go past, blast past worry.

I hope you join me in on this. In this particular episode, what we're going to do is we're going to go after renewing your mind. Renewing your thinking. Specifically, we're going to go after three things in your brain. Three key components in your brain that deal with worry. We're gonna give you some tools, some specific things to be able to redirect that thinking. What we're going to do is periodically, it's not going to be the whole season, or the whole year, we're going to come back to his. We're going to revisit different strategies for overcoming worry. To live in joy. To live in creativity. To be innovative. To be in the moment. To have our best thinking, our best lives, all of that. Are you in? I hope so.

Today, we're going to get specific. We're going after the brain. We're going after thinking. Just know that this is the beginning of something big. I'm excited you're still here. I assume since we're still talking that you're in, so join me here. One other thing that I want to speak to as we're going after worry, quick, just again, beat it over the head a little bit. Is that some crazy data came out recently on the subject of worry. This just ticked me off, all the more. It's just one more reason why we're going after this. A recent study looked at, basically people who said they worried. What they did is they had them journal, document the things they were actually worried about, over the course of time. A shocking thing, actually not so shocking, wasn't surprising at all, but offensive. All right? Came out of that subject, and the study was by Robert Leahy, PhD. It was spoken to actually out of the book The Worry Cure. Recently looking at it, actually the author of that book, The Worry Cure, Robert Leahy, PhD.

Here's the thing, the data was interesting in that. Had all these people journaling the things that they were worried about. What they did, then they also looked back retrospectively and said, “Okay, of those things that you worried about,

There are three keys questions to answer when starting a dedicated social media platform: What do you care about?  Who are you serving?  And where are your natural inclinations in terms of media creation inclination?  Then you can begin!  You will also learn about the full spectrum (know, like, trust, build) that you will use social media to promote, as well as simple hacks that will enable you to use your time efficiently.

[Tweet "Social media is a natural extension of connecting to people, but on a larger scale. @justinwise @mitchmatthews #dreamthinkdo"]

It all comes down to relationships, in both size and strength.  In one place you can pitch an idea to thousands of people at one time, or you can have a one-on-one chat with someone you would’ve never met otherwise.  That’s the wonder of social media!  Isn’t it time to make it work for you?

Listen To The Podcast:
Have you ever been curious about trying something different as a career… but you just weren’t sure how to start… or if you even should?

That’s where Lise Cartwright found herself a few years ago.

She was in a job that wasn’t fulfilling.  A little part of her was dying every day.  She knew there had to be better for her.  BUT… she wasn’t in a place where she could just quit and start all over.

Instead, she launched a side hustle.

That is… she started to experiment with different kinds of work on her own time.

Writing.

Organizing.

Planning.

All the stuff she loved.

But now she was doing it for other people.  And she was getting paid.

Things started to take off and she quit her “bad fit” job.  Now, she’s doing work that she enjoys… while getting paid well to do it.  It’s not easy… but it sure is satisfying.

I love Lise’s story.  How about you?  What’s something that stood out to you from the ideas that Lise shared?

I’d love to hear from YOU!  Leave a comment and let me know.

Known as “the queen of the side hustle,” Cartwright has built a highly successful business helping ordinary people turn their side passions or sidelines into full-time careers. Lindsay Palmer has made it a habit to create opportunities where none seem to exist. She did this throughout college and it got her a dream mentor and a position with the Pittsburgh Steelers. She did it after college to land her dream job. In this interview, Lindsay talks with Mitch about the strategies you can use to create opportunities and live more of the life you want to live.
Listen To The Podcast:
In college, she couldn’t find an internship matching with her passions, so she created one. That’s right. She created her own internship.

(That effort helped her to eventually land a coveted position with the Pittsburgh Steelers.)

She couldn’t find a mentor locally, so she searched the country for people who were the best of the best in her chosen field. She reached out.She connected.

Those efforts enabled Lindsay to meet with one of the industry’s top leaders and then be invited to fly across the country to attend a series of events as her new mentor’s special guest.

Her “dream job” didn’t exist right out of college, so she worked a “side-hustle” to build up her skills and make some extra money.

Now… just a few years later… she’s in her dream job. And, I’m wildly blessed to say… that it’s with me and the team behind the BIG Dream Gathering.

I wanted to bring Lindsay on DREAM THINK DO, because she has some great stories and some powerful insights to share when it comes to creating opportunities… especially when none seem to exist.

If you’ve ever felt a little stuck...

If you’ve ever needed to make a change, but you just weren’t sure where to start…

I think you’re going to love this interview.

Oh and let me know what stood out to you from Lindsay’s story.Leave a comment below.I’d love to hear from YOU!

Interview:

LauraL Hey, hey out there to everyone in your Dream, Think, Doer Universe. I love that. I love people who are dreamers, thinkers, and doers.

Mitch: Right? It's a great crew. And as we talked about before we hit record it's an awesome, awesome crew. We tend to totally offend grumpy people so there's just a lot of love here 'cause that's what we do, I love it.

Laura: Fantastic.

Mitch: I could go through the list of successes that you've had in your life, I mean you were appointed by President Bill Clinton to help shape AmeriCorps, you've helped grow startups and non-profits, you've been interviewing globe changers for this book, it's a bestseller, all of those things, but somebody might look at you and go, "Wait you've never felt stuck." How about you? What's a time in your life where you Laura personally felt stuck?

Laura: Boy where do I start? You know it's really interesting this idea when people look at you and they go, "Oh she's got it all together. He's got it all together." Cause I really do think that people see us as the fully formed person we are today, and number one, I hope that I'm not fully formed, I hope there's still evolution and change and growth that's going to happen, because boy it would pretty boring to stop here, right?

Mitch: Exactly. I'm done.

Laura: Been so fun so far.

Mitch: I'm done.

Laura: I'm all done.

So number one, A, I'm not fully formed and B, it's not that I came into the world as this I'm just maybe five or 10 or 25 years ahead of the person who's looking at me. I'm just the future them, and they look at me as this unachievable thing when in fact it's completely achievable if they dream, think, and do.

So a time when I felt fully stuck was probably when I was at the big traditional gold standard search firm that I was at, and I was supposed to be happy. I had done all the right things, I had checked all the right boxes, I went to the right schools, I got the right jobs, I got the right promotions, and there I was as the youngest Vice President at this very well known search firm, and I wasn't happy. And I couldn't understand why I wasn't happy, and I thought about the thousands of people that I'd interviewed for jobs who were all at the top of their game, who all were successful, and not all of whom were happy. And I couldn't figure out why that was until I realized that I wasn't happy either. And then I looked around and I thought, "Well why am I here? Why did I join this firm?" And I joined this firm because it was the very top firm in the country, in the world that was doing specifically mission-driven non-profit executive search, and I thought I was there to change the world.

Mitch: Yeah.

Laura: But then I realized that I was actually there to create profit for the owners of the firm. So my job was to sit on one side of the table with the firm and on the other side of the table as my client who wanted to cure cancer, or save the whales, or feed the poor, or create educational access, or anything else that it might be. And in between us silent unspoken was the elephant, the profit, and loss statement of the firm. And it turned out that I had two masters. I was serving the firm, and I was also serving my clients, and the truth is I wanted to be on that side o...

Jon Vroman | Breaking Free from Small Thinking

Podcast cover

Front Row Foundation’s Jon Vroman gives you tips for how to think big, to take charge of your life and accomplish your dreams, on this episode of the DREAM. THINK. DO. podcast
Listen To The Podcast:
Do you have a great idea, but feel like you don’t have what it takes to accomplish it? Like you don’t know the right people, don’t have the right family name, or maybe even don’t have the right number in your bank account?

If so ...your big dreams are being crippled by that small thinking.

It’s time to change those thoughts! But how do you do it?

That's what this week's DREAM.THINK.DO. episode is all about.

This week, I talk to Jon Vroman.

Jon Vroman used to live small, literally. In 10th grade, he was 4’10” and weighed just 85 pounds. To put that in perspective, by the time he was driving to school there were 9-year-olds who were taller than him… And it didn’t stop there, because he was living his life based on small thinking until an experience at a Jason Mraz concert changed everything.

[Tweet "“You’re not here for everybody but you are here for somebody.” @jonvroman @mitchmatthews #dreamthinkdo "]

Jon shares his story of how this experience led to the development of the incredible Front Row Foundation, which gives seriously ill children and adults the chance to have amazing experiences in the front row of their dream event.  Whether it's a concert, a Broadway play or a NASCAR race!

During our conversation, Jon offers you tips for how to think big, to take charge of your life and accomplish your dreams.  From advice on how to stay true to your commitment to choosing who’s in the row beside you, Jon provides the strategies you need to make your dreams a reality. You will also learn how you can create your own charity, even if with no experience or prior knowledge.

“When our why has heart, our how gets legs.”

You can’t change how big you are physically (although Jon did finally grow), but you can change how big you think. It all comes down to your outlook, to decide how you want to experience your life. It’s all up to you. Do you want to live in the front row?  Let's do it!

“We don’t just want to be a hero for a day, we want that day to be a metaphor for how they can live the rest of their lives.”

My guest today is Karen Brown. Karen is a recognized thought leader in the fields of leadership and professional performance, specifically in the areas of the unconscious mind and optimizing your thinking for elevated levels of endurance and success.

She is an ultra-endurance athlete who competes around the world. In fact, one of her biggest recent accomplishments was qualifying for and finishing the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii!

Along with being an expert in neuro-linguistic programming and mental and emotional release, she's also an executive coach, sought-after speaker, and best-selling author. Karen's most recent book, called Unlimiting Your Beliefs: Seven Keys to Great Success in Your Personal and Professional Life, has been winning awards and accolades. It has also inspired me to invite Karen on DREAM THINK DO to talk about breaking through those limiting beliefs that creep in and start to shut us down.

I'm really looking forward to this conversation.

INTERVIEW:
Let's get to it.

Karen, welcome to DREAM THINK DO.

Thank you, Mitch. I'm so thrilled to be here.

Okay. I do want to dive into your concepts on limited beliefs and breaking through those things, but I've always wanted to ask someone who completed an Ironman World Championship, what was it like to round the corner and see the finish line?

Ok, let me set the scene a little bit. I am an amateur athlete, nowhere near pro level, and that is to say that I'm a bit slower than the pros. My time at Ironman World Championships was 15 hours, 45 minutes. When I was rounding the corner, as you said, it was nighttime. It was about 10:30 at night, 10:45 at night. There was total blackness, a sky full of brilliant stars, and two miles away from the finish line, you can hear the roar of the crowd.

Oh wow. Even at night?

Yes.

Hey, and by the way Karen, just so you know, for me to just do the swim, I still wouldn't have been done with just the swim part by 10 o'clock at night. So it's still very impressive.

So you're two miles out, and you start hearing the crowd.

Yes, you start hearing the crowd, and then you can just faintly make out Mike Riley's voice, who has been the voice of Ironman for 30 some odd years now. He's the one that says the iconic, indelibly memorable, "Karen Brown, you are now an Ironman," when you cross the finish line. It was the most magnificent day, Mitch.

Now I'll say the journey to get there was very, very difficult, and there were plenty of times when I wanted to quit and worried that I would quit. We can go into that later. But that specific day, there was never one moment when I wanted to quit. It was joy and bliss and wonderful, and I say this knowing that it was a billion degrees, it was like the surface of the sun hot. It was humid; asphalt was melting, we had torrential rains at the turnaround point in the bike, we had big waves for the swim, incredible crosswinds on the Queen K for the biking portion. So this was no cakewalk. This was very challenging.
The part that I tapped into was my journey to get there. This was a lifelong dream. This was something that I wanted for 28 years. The day that I was there, and I was racing alongside all of my heroes, all of the icons that I had seen over the years on the coverage, specifically the icon that touched off this entire lifelong dream of mine, Julie Moss. It had been 30 years to the day since she had competed originally in the second Ironman World Championships that ever televised, and she came back that year and raced one more time.

Oh my gosh.

She wanted that to be her swan song, and I got to race alongside her.

Wow! Did you know that going into it, or was that something you found out along the way?

It was something I found out two days before the race...

SOLOCAST:

Well, hello. It's nice to meet you. Welcome to DREAM THINK DO. I will admit, I don't typically kick off the podcast saying it's nice to meet you. Although I do believe that it is nice to meet you.  I use it, though, today for a couple of reasons. One, again, to reinforce, hey, it's nice to meet you, especially if this is the first time listening to DREAM THINK DO. I'm so glad you're here. If you're a longtime DREAM THINK DO-er, and/or if we've met before, welcome back. I'm glad you're here. Secondly, I say nice to meet you because that, in fact, is the theme of this show. That's right. This particular episode, this deep dive, is all about strategies for helping you meet someone new.

Because it happens.

You know, maybe you're wanting to meet new people because you're wanting some awesome people in your life, some new good friends to try stuff with, or great people to connect with professionally, or you want to learn from cool people doing cool stuff, then awesome.

Or maybe you need to meet some new people because you want to expand your network, or you're exploring new jobs or new careers, or you're entering into a new era or a new organization. And maybe you're feeling like a stranger in a strange land and you're wanting to find some like-minded people around you. That's where we're headed.

I will say if you're an extrovert, stay tuned. These concepts are going to help you. I can tell you I lean a little bit towards the introvert. If you're an introvert, you know what I'm talking about. I appreciate meeting new people. But as an introvert who's learned to do extroverted things, I always have to revisit my tool chest, so I can maximize the opportunities as I'm meeting new people because yes, God's great sense of humor is that my day job as an extrovert involves meeting new people all the time.

So I need the tools that we're going to talk about today. These tools will help you to connect with people, to feel more comfortable, and to be able to put others at ease as well. This will greatly, even wildly, increase the chances for conversations with the kinds of people that you want to connect with.

Let me paint a picture for you. Let's say you're walking down a hallway, you're walking towards the door. Behind that door, you know, is a room filled with people. You don’t know most of them. How are you feeling? Are you excited at that thought? Are you smiling at that thought? If that's you, cool. That probably means you are an extrovert. That's great. Some of these strategies are going to help you. They're going to help you love people well, love those conversations that you're having, and take them to new heights. So stay tuned.

But let me check back in here. Let's revisit this scenario hallway. Double doors at the end, big meeting space on the other side. You're hearing a dull roar of people talking. How are you doing thinking about this? Are you freaking out inside just a little bit? Are you throwing up just a little bit? Maybe some part of you wants to walk away from that room. You have emails to check, a book to read, Office is back on Netflix. You just started your favorite episode. Right?

Whichever way you respond, hang with me here because the things we're going to talk about today are going to be tools that help no matter where you're at on that spectrum. Introvert, extrovert, ambivert. That's that new category in the middle. Wherever you're at, we're going to get you some strategies to help.

Meeting new people can be exciting. It can be amazing. It can also be a little nerve-wracking, but it's important. No matter what, it's important because we can't go after our dreams alone.

The Gift Of Listening

Podcast cover
Read more

Give the gift of “Intentional Listening.”  That’s right! This week we’re doing a deep dive into the subject of giving one of the best… most sought after… most coveted gifts a person can give.  It’s the gift of being fully present and listening intently. I know… I know… it’s almost too simple.

But in our busy world… I think we can all agree that feeling like someone is truly listening is a rare thing.  All the distractions… pings… bings… and alerts… can keep us from being fully engaged. So, at this time of year… when everyone is looking for that PERFECT gift… I thought it would be good to review some simple but powerful strategies to help you listen more effectively!

Listen To The Podcast:

Click here to download the DREAM THINK DO “Listening Cheat Sheet.”

MORE INFO:

So… I think we can admit that we’re all guilty of not listening at times in our lives. We tune people (even the important ones… sometimes) out when we’re trying to concentrate on something we’re doing, while we’re binging on Netflix, while we’re being bombarded by all the pinging, dinging and ringing distractions… or when we’re exhausted at the end of a long day.  Listening can impact us at home and… of course… at work too.

Recently, The Harvard Business Review reported on a story involving the top executives of a large manufacturer based in Chicago.  These execs were asked to reflect on the role listening has played within their work. Then those same leaders participated in a seminar on intentional listening.  After being exposed to some specific listening strategies (like what we’re covering in this episode), the participants shared some epiphanies and “light bulb” moments around listening:

  • “Frankly, I had never thought of listening as an important subject by itself. But now that I am aware of it, I think that perhaps 80% of my work depends on my listening to someone, or on someone else listening to me.”
  • “I’ve been thinking back about things that have gone wrong over the past couple of years, and I suddenly realized that many of the troubles have resulted from someone not hearing something, or getting it in a distorted way.”
  • “It’s interesting to me that we have considered so many facets of communication in the company, but have inadvertently overlooked listening. I’ve about decided that it’s the most important link in the company’s communications, and it’s obviously also the weakest one.”

Can you relate?

It’s true.  Listening is critical to our relationships and to our business success.

Again… the good news is that listening is a skill just like speaking, writing, typing or learning to play tennis (or pickleball… cuz… yeah… it’s fun to say “pickleball!”).

That means we can learn to be better listeners and we can unlearn some of the bad habits we’ve all developed.

And that’s why we’re digging into this crucial topic today… especially around the holidays.

We’re going to talk about HOW you can listen more effectively and intentionally.

So you can give it as a gift to the important people in your life!

The 4 Tenets for YOGA & LIFE

Podcast cover

My guest this week is James Miller. James is the creator of Adamantine Yoga. He’s also one of the most innovative thinkers I’ve ever met. James has been bringing his unique thinking and approach to the world of yoga… and I believe… he’s on the verge of a huge breakthrough. We’ll talk about that more in the episode. Plus, I can tell you he’s already pulled off at least one miracle… and that’s getting ME to practice yoga… and I’ve actually been loving it.

Listen To The Podcast:

RESOURCES:

Adamantine Yoga: www.adamantineyoga.com

MORE INFORMATION:

James came to yoga after being a Marine.

When he started, he would be the first to tell you that he could do 30 pull-ups and 100 pushups but he couldn’t touch his toes. Now… he’s one of the most flexible people I’ve ever met, and at 48 years old he’s in the best shape of his life.

Since I turn 50 next year… and I’ve said that is one of my goals is to be in the best shape of my life in my 50th year and beyond, so James and his approach really grabbed my attention.

Apparently… I’m a little late to the game with yoga. A recent study found that over 20 million Americans practice yoga on a regular basis and that continues to grow each year. Plus, I hear from a number of you that you practice it and I know you love it.

So we’ll be talking about some of the strengths of yoga and some of the big misperceptions and big questions too.

BUT… whether you have ever practiced yoga or not… I think you’ll benefit from hearing about James’ outlook on life and the 4 tenets his school is based upon.

Those tenets are:

  • Integrity
  • Non-violence
  • Surrender
  • Gratitude

We’ll talk about why they matter to the school, to the practice of yoga and… most importantly… how they build on each other to help us to live a better life.

I want to hear from YOU! What stood out to you from this conversation?

And… tell me about YOUR experiences with yoga. What are some of the things YOU have learned so far? I can’t wait to hear from YOU!

Comment below and let me know.

2 Minutes to Confidence

Today I’m getting you a strategy that will boost your confidence in 2 minutes. That’s right. It’s a simple step you can take to increase your feelings of confidence, well-being and focus! It’s a concept straight out of the growing field of study known as “Micro-Resilience.” These tools enable you to create “positive psychological changes which lead to more energy, engagement and joy in the face of life’s challenges. And who doesn’t want more energy, engagement, and joy in their lives? So let’s get to this!

Listen To The Podcast:

RESEARCH: Cuddy, A. J. C., Schultz, S. J., & Fosse, N. E. (April 01, 2018). P-Curving a More Comprehensive Body of Research on Postural Feedback Reveals Clear Evidential Value for Power-Posing Effects: Reply to Simmons and Simonsohn (2017). Psychological Science, 29, 4, 656-666.

MORE ABOUT THE EPISODE:

We’re talking about “Micro-Resilience” and “Power Poses” in this episode.

Since we’re all about helping you to dream bigger, think better and do more of what you were put on the planet to do… I’m always looking to experiment with ways to increase our resilience.

Some strategies lend themselves to what’s called, “Pre-Traumatic Growth” by Bonnie St. John in her book, “Micro-Resilience: Minor Shifts for Major Boosts in Focus, Drive, and Energy.”

These are positive psychological changes that lead to more energy, engagement, and joy in the face of life’s challenges. And who doesn’t want more energy, engagement, and joy in their lives?

Specifically… who doesn’t need a quick boost of energy and confidence when we’re heading into a potentially stressful situation:

Maybe it was a situation at work:

  • Getting ready for a presentation
  • Going into a difficult conversation
  • Prepping for a job interview

Or maybe it was a DREAM THINK DO Scenario:

  • Walking into a NEW class you’ve always wanted to take and finally signed up
  • Pitching your IDEA to that person who might be able to help you make it happen
  • Finally asking her THAT question

In this QUICK DTD episode, we’re going to talk about something that’s been labeled “Power Poses.”

It’s a technique in which people stand in a way that a “powerful” or “assertive” might stand or hold themselves. By doing so, some researchers have found these “poses” actually increases a sense of confidence and focus.

The idea of “Power Posing” was first named and described in a paper by Dana Carney, Amy Cuddy, and Andy Yap in the journal, Psychological Science.

In their initial research, Carney, Cuddy, and Yap asserted that “High-Power Poses” produced an increase in testosterone (which causes an increased sense of confidence and focus) and a decrease in cortisol (which tends to reduce a sense of anxiety). These researchers have continued to produce studies and books on the subject.

Now, I’ll be the first to admit that some of their underlying science has been disputed. And some researchers really push back on this concept.

BUT… that’s where our “experiment” will come in.

I want you to give it a try.

I can tell you that since I don’t have an easy way to check my own testosterone or cortisol, I’m not 100% sure my rates change in the slightest. BUT I can tell you that I’ve been utilizing the “Power Poses” for the last year or more… and it’s made a difference.

And even though some researchers might poo this and/or consider it a placebo effect… I can tell you that I’ve benefited from it significantly. So, I wanted to share it with you!

In this episode, I’ll walk you through some specifics and scenarios… then I want you to try it out. Comment below and let me know what you think!

Real deal… hocus pocus… or something in between? I can’t wait to hear from YOU! Comment below and let me know!

20 [Really Good] Questions with Mitch

Podcast cover
Read more

This week our guest is Mitch Matthews. I know… I know. You might be saying, “But you’re the host. So how does that work?” Well, one of my coaching clients wants to have her own podcast someday. So I let her interview me as an “experiment,” and she did such an incredible job… I wanted to share the conversation with you. We’ll call this episode “20 [really good] questions with Mitch Matthews.” We dive into questions around breaking through fear, how I got into the speaking/coaching business, when I started dreaming (this one might surprise you) and how I freaked out my parents when I was a kid (which might help you with your kids, too!).

Listen To The Podcast:

Okay… so we’re taking a little different approach to this episode and here’s the back story.

You guys know that I’m a success coach and I work with people one-on-one to help them get clear on their goals and dreams… and then help them to build a plan to walk it out.

As we do that… my client and I work to create experiences and challenges along the way to help them experience versions of their dream. This process often allows them to “take their dream for a test drive,” and see if they actually enjoy it.

Recently… one of my coaching clients… an incredible person named Cheri Judd… mentioned that she thought about doing a podcast someday.

She’s got a great heart… she’s awesome at asking questions… and she’s naturally curious… so it seemed like a great fit. And since we’re always looking for ways to experiment with dreams… I volunteered to be a guest… and I had her interview me as if she would for her future podcast.

So… yeah… we did it as an experiment.

What’s really cool was… she was awesome. She asked some great questions and it was really fun. Plus, she got me to think about some things and tell some stories… I’ve never told on DREAM THINK DO… or ANY podcast I’ve ever been on.

Originally… the idea was just to do the recording for practice… so we didn’t really concentrate on sound quality or a big fancy intro. We just kept it really simple.

BUT it was a great interview. We celebrated and it really confirmed that she was on to something because she really enjoyed the experience too.

Well… in the past few weeks… as we’re getting closer and closer to the mile marker of episode 250… a number of you suggested that I turn the mic on myself and have someone interview ME on DREAM THINK DO.

And that got me thinking about Cheri’s interview.

It was so fun and she did such a great job, I thought that might be perfect!

Plus… I think this will be really encouraging for Cheri to have the world hear her facilitate an interview too. I think it will fuel that fire.

Plus, you guys can let her know that she really is good at this.

Now… again… we didn’t focus on sound quality… so it’s not up to our normal standards on that front… but as long as you can put up with that… I think you’ll really enjoy the conversation.

And my hope is… that as you hear a little more of my story… it’ll inspire you to push through some fears… because as you’ll hear… I had a LOT of them… I hope it will help you think about some of your own dreams and goals… AND… to be grateful for the people who have helped you along the way!

So let’s get to this…

My guest today is David Osborn. David is a best selling author, successful entrepreneur and real estate investor based in Austin, Texas. He’s going to bring 3 keys to building a millionaire mindset as well as breaking free from a scarcity mindset!

Now… Dream Think Doer… I know you’ll appreciate David’s story because although he’s wildly successful NOW, he wasn’t just handed all of this. He had to work at it. In fact, at the age of 26, he was broke, unemployed and he was fresh off a low-budget trip around the world.

But he got intentional and things started to change… big time.

At 26, David decided to test his entrepreneurial theories… as well as lean on the wisdom and values he’d learned from his parents and from his global travels He started to partner with his mom (who was a real estate agent) and he started to experiment with real estate sales. It wasn’t a good fit initially, but David started to be intentional about who he was spending time with and who he was learning from.

Within 10 years, he was running one of the top real estate brokerages in the world.

Since then… he’s gone on to help launch over 50 companies.

I was introduced to David by my friend and past DREAM THINK DO guest Rock Thomas. You probably remember Rock from episode 219 (www.mitchmatthews.com/219) He brought pure gold. So when he suggested having David on the show… I was all in.

Although I’ve been impressed with his achievements… the more I dug into his story, I’ve been blown away by how everyone talks about him. They’ve said that he’s a BEAST at getting things done and being passionate and fully present wherever he goes. So THAT got me curious.

I wanted to get in his head to hear about his strategies for dreaming bigger, thinking better and doing more!

Plus… I have to say I really respect that with all of his business achievements, David points to his marriage to his talented wife, Traci, and their 3 awesome kiddos as his biggest priority and greatest accomplishment. I am totally on board with that!

He’s living the DREAM THINK DO life… and it’s going to be a great interview!

support you in doing what you say you’re going to do!”

Here’s some of what we talk about:
The BIG question: “How do you know you’re in a mid-career slump?”

  1. You just do “good enough” work
  2. Getting promoted seems more like a burden than a reward
  3. You’ve stopped building relationships
  4. You’ve stopped taking action on your ideas
  5. You’ve stopped learning

The BIGGER and MORE IMPORTANT question: “What can we do about it?”

Start learning again

Regularly finish something

Surround yourself with allies

Their Dream Became an Epic Family Road Trip!

Podcast cover
Read more

My guest is Peter Van Stralen. He has one of the best titles of all time: “Family Adventurist.” That’s right. In 2015, Peter, his wife, and their three kids sold everything other than their jeep and set off on an Epic Family Road trip. Initially around the US… but it’s now their adventure has included trips around the globe. And they’re still going!

RESOURCES:

Peter is an entrepreneur. In fact, he worked hard to grow a business he started in high school with his brothers into a successful franchise.

But a few years ago, he participated in an employee training session. In it, the facilitator challenged attendees to write down some professional AND personal dreams. Peter is quick to admit that the professional goals came to mind quickly, but he felt a little stuck when it came to personal goals. So he took the exercise home. He wanted to talk with his wife and their three kids about some shared dreams.

As they started to explore the possibilities, the idea of an epic road trip came to mind. Visit some of the National Parks. See more of the country. Do it together.

They talked about it but due to Peter’s schedule… the idea didn’t get much traction. BUT the family kept coming back to the idea and it started to take root.

Then in 2015, the Van Stralen’s sold everything other than their jeep and set off on something they called their, “Epic Family Road Trip.”

Initially, they focused on the United States but then started to venture into Canada too. Then their daughter did a book report on New Zealand and the family started to dream of taking their trip internationally. Within a year… they had packed up their Jeep and headed down under.

My conversation with Peter draws from his experiences of stepping out in this epic adventure but it also pulls from his experience of building successful businesses.

In fact, he talks about how he was inspired by the following quote:

“When values are clear, decisions are easy.”
Roy Disney.

Van Stralen’s applied this wisdom and came up with a set of family values that helped to guide them. Peter even shares a specific story where their established values helped them to make a difficult decision while in New Zealand.

You can see their adventures on Youtube. As you check it out, you’ll not only see their travel “ups and downs,” but you’ll also see how they connect with and care for people… all over the planet. It’s powerful stuff.

Peter and his family are truly living the DREAM THINK DO life… and they drive a JEEP while they do it… so I wanted to have him on to talk about how this all got started… and what we can all learn from it.

Quick Episode Summary:

Calendar Driven To-Do List

Podcast cover
Read more
This week we dive into a time management strategy I call “Calendar-Driven To-Do Lists.” You know I’m a huge fan of To-Do List's… and I’m guessing you are too. To-Do lists can help us focus, get more done and implement like ninjas!!! BUT there’s a dangerous side to To-Do lists too. They can work FOR you… but if they’re done wrong… they can work AGAINST you. In this episode… we dive in a 3-step process for keeping your To-Do list working FOR you… so that you can end the day feeling like you have gas left in the tank, feeling satisfied with what you have accomplished AND feeling great about tomorrow!
RESOURCES MENTIONED:

Reminders App
Asana App
[Tweet "“Lack of direction, not lack of time, is the problem. We all have twenty-four hour days.” – Zig Ziglar"]
So… we’re all busy… but if you’re listening to DREAM THINK DO… that also means that you’re all about going after your dreams… your goals… your passions.

BUT we all have the same 24 hours in a day… whether we have 2 bucks or 2 billion… we all have 24 hours. The key is to figure out the best way to use your 24!

We’re going to be using TWO tools.

The calendar and the to-do list.

We’re going to start with the to-do list and then we’ll talk about the calendar.

NOTE: You can use a paper system… but it’s a little more challenging. I’d suggest using an electronic version… like Asana.

SIDE NOTE: A key is being able to see the tasks you have accomplished AND the tasks you still need to accomplish. You gotta have the satisfaction of checking those things off the list.

STEP 1:

If you’re using an app… (and I highly encourage that) this is your first step.

Create a “Main To-Do List.”

This is where you can dump all the things you need to do in one spot.

THEN… STEP 2:

Now, I want you to take the next step and create some new categories (or projects… depending on your app) for each day of the week:

MON
TUES
WED
THURS
FRI
WEEKEND
Now… you can start this process at any time… but it’s best if you can plan for tomorrow… today. So if it’s Thursday as you listen to this… you can implement right away but start by planning for Friday.

So you can get the process in place for tomorrow and get ready to wake up clear and ready to go.

NEXT…

Start thinking about tomorrow. As you look at your “Main To-Do list,” think about what’s most important… what’s most urgent… and what needs to get done tomorrow.

Move the things from your “Main List” over to your Friday list.

STEP 3: THE CALENDAR

NOW… comes our second tool… and STEP 3: your calendar.

As we look at the items on our to-do list for Friday… I want you to find a specific time on your calendar and make an appointment with yourself to get those things done.

For the bigger… more important projects… block out a specific time and name it. (ie. 9 to 10 am for Project X and 11 to noon for Project Y.)

Now… I know some of you don’t have total control over your calendar. So other people may be able to schedule things without your control… and/or you might have a lot of people who can see your calendar… and if so… that sucks… but it’s a reality.

So if it’s not appropriate for you to name a specific task on your calendar… then you can block out time for “ADMIN” or “STRATEGY” or IMPLEMENTATION. Use whatever term would be best in your organization.

BUT… if you don’t have to deal with that… your calendar is your own… then don’t worry about it.

Get specific. Find a time block for each larger task.

As you think about the type of project or task and ask yourself: “What’s the best time of day to do this kind of task?”

For example, for me: It’s best if I do content creation (creative writing, podcast prep, training prep) in the mornings. Then I’m better with being a part of meetings in the afternoon.

Also… I do “time bundling.” So, Tuesdays and Wednesdays tend to be for my coaching clients.

She asked for a Billion Dollar Idea with Jaime Cross

Podcast cover
Read more
My guest is entrepreneur Jaime Cross. Two years after leaving her career in banking to be home with her newborn son, Jaime had this longing, I'd even call it a calling, to build a business that would be driven by purpose and that would have worldwide impact.

Now, I'm betting that felt like a pretty audacious goal since she was at home, elbows deep in all the glorious messiness of raising kiddos and full-time parenting, but she was bold and she prayed. More specifically, Jaime asked God for a billion-dollar idea. Yeah, that's with a B, a billion-dollar idea, which is pretty big. I mean, right?

TRANSCRIPT:
Mitch Matthews: Well, a few days later, Jaime got hit with a business plan in her sleep. Literally, the idea hit her in a dream. I love this because I've done over 200 episodes of DREAM. THINK. DO., and I think this is our first person who got hit with a dream in a dream. I love that. Then Jaime embarked on her entrepreneurial journey the very next day and instantly became a millionaire. No, I'm just kidding. It wasn't that easy. It wasn't that simple. But she went after the dream right away. She went to work.

Mitch Matthews: After eight long years of trial and error, a lot of mistakes and tears, her company now is one of the fastest-growing organic skincare companies in the world. They're selling millions of dollars of product. It's called MIG. Its tagline is seed to skin, skin to soul. That's what Jaime is all about. It's an amazing story. I heard it and I thought, oh my gosh, I got to have her on. So I'm so excited to do this. Jaime Cross, Welcome to DREAM. THINK. DO.

Jaime Cross: Thank you. It's so great to be here.

Mitch Matthews: Absolutely. Absolutely. I love, love, love your story. We got to meet at the conference. Pedro Adao, who was also a recent guest on DREAM. THINK. DO, introduced us and we got to meet at his conference in Texas a few months ago now, but I was like, oh my gosh, your story's awesome.

Jaime Cross: Thanks, Mitch.

Mitch Matthews: I love it. So you're in Colorado Springs. You and your husband have four boys. When this story started, you just had one. Now you've got four boys. Let's go back. We're going to time jump a little bit, and I want to hear about life now, but I think I want to hear about the genesis of this, and I mentioned it obviously in the intro a little bit. Let's talk about that. You had left a career in banking ...

Jaime Cross: Mm-hmm (affirmative).

Mitch Matthews: ... to be at home.

Jaime Cross: Yes.

Mitch Matthews: That's never an easy decision.

Jaime Cross: No, I mean, I was making great money banking, doing the whole corporate thing. It took Nathan and I five years to get pregnant. When we finally found out that we were going to be parents, I just could not imagine not being home with them. Came home. It was about two years into full-time motherhood that I was starting to feel that pull and that stir. Actually, by then I had my second baby when I was starting to be like, okay, I know that I'm so satisfied as a mother, but something's stirring in me, and I know there's more. I think a lot of mothers feel guilty about wanting more, but I was just like, God, there's something inside of me and we were struggling to pay our bills. I'd given up this huge salary. Nathan was teaching, and teachers don't make very good money-

Mitch Matthews: No.

Jaime Cross: ... and so it really helped-

Mitch Matthews: They should. They should make tons of money, but they don't. Absolutely.

Jaime Cross: Yeah, we were a one-income family, trying to live debt-free. It was a struggle. At that moment when I cried out to God, it wasn't just because we weren't meeting our bills. It was because there was this thing inside of me just raging to come out like, I know, I'm supposed to build something.

She's obviously having an impact on a whole lot of people including Rock Thomas. I wanted to dive in, find out more what these sacred gifts are, see how we could use them to apply them to dreaming bigger, thinking better and doing more of what we were put on the planet to do. So, let's get to this. Annette, welcome to DREAM THINK DO.

TRANSCRIPT:
Annette Sharpe: Hey, Mitch, thank you for having me. I'm so excited to be here today.

Mitch Matthews: Absolutely. I'm so excited to get to finally hit record and do this conversation with you. But I know people were leaning in during just that introduction going, okay, “sacred gifts.” That sounds interesting. How do you describe the sacred gifts to someone?

Annette Sharpe: Well, we have a definition, actually, of what sacred gifts are and what they're not. But sacred gifts are unexplained abilities that we have, from birth till death, that allow us to do ordinary things extraordinarily well. There's a lot in that definition. When we talk about unexplained abilities, they really are that. There's a lot of mystery to them. But what's important, I think, in the definition is that we have them from birth, and we have them till the day we die. They're not things we learn, they're things that are innate in us and they're part of a bigger part of us. These sacred gifts reside there. We have them as our way of giving back and being a contribution to the world.

Mitch Matthews: Absolutely. If we had them from birth, and we have them all through life, I would imagine that as people start to get clarity on that, though, it probably still feels pretty revolutionary, or at least reinforcing to be able to say, oh, yeah, that is something that I do well. As you help people figure this thing out, what do you see happen in people?

Annette Sharpe: Oh my gosh, yeah. What do we see happen? Well, first of all, thousands of people have been through the program. We have, I think, two things that people say the most. Number one, why didn't I know this information before? And number two, thank God, I didn't have that gift. There are a couple of things that people really come to understand. Number one, they get a better understanding of who they truly are at the core of their being.

One of the characteristics of the sacred gifts that we teach is that we are made up of our humaneness and our beingness. Our humaneness is everything that makes us human. That's our thoughts. That's our beliefs, that's our feelings, that's our ego. It's everything that we see. If we were to meet each other face to face, we'd have some ideas about who we are. But our sacred gifts are inside of us. They're part of our beingness. They are something that basically we have, that we can't explain, that allow us to do seemingly ordinary things in revolutionary types of ways.

There are some people who go through the program as you said, and they say, "Yeah, I was really good at that. It's very affirming." But for others, they realize that something that they've been very good at actually is a sacred gift, and it gives it more reverence. It's something maybe they took advantage of or took for granted maybe and also helps them to reduce judgment on other people who they may have thought should be able to do things the way that they do. So, there's just a whole bunch of different things that people get when they start to realize who they truly are and why they're here.
Mitch Matthews: That's awesome. Give us some examples of some sacred gifts.

TRANSCRIPT:
Mitch Matthews: Amy uses her roles as a coach, a writer, a podcaster, and a speaker to move individuals beyond those limiting beliefs and sabotaging mindsets to a place of, listen to this, I love this, radical personal empowerment and self-love. I'd say the world needs a lot more of that. Amy's been instrumental in aiding countless women especially, but I'm guessing she's helped a whole lot of men too, in stepping into their authentic power and craft lives they actually want.

Amy E. Smith is making a big impact, and it's just about dang time to have her on the show. So let's do this.

Amy, welcome to DREAM THINK DO.

Amy Smith: Well, I sound really fancy when you read it.

Mitch Matthews: I always say a good intro is my gift to my guests. You deserve a good intro, plus you're-

Amy Smith: Are you available for voiceover work because that's-

Mitch Matthews: I do have a face for radio, I'll admit. I love it. All right, so for you guys who can't see her, we'll put some of the videos up online and all that stuff. But she's got these awesome, awesome glasses. She's wearing a cool hat, the whole thing. She is a bold statement in and of herself. You got to go check out the Joyjunkie.com, all of that.

Amy, obviously you're living this, you are helping people move past these limiting beliefs, kind of the self-sabotaging mindsets. You're living who you are bold, which I just want to honor. I just think it's so cool.

Amy Smith: Thank you.

Mitch Matthews: I'm guessing for someone like yourself, I'm guessing you've had to fight for that. Has this always been easy for you to live it as well as help others or is this something you've had to fight for?

Amy Smith: Well, I pretty much came out of the womb speaking like Tony Robbins and dressing like Sophia Lauren, so, no, I've always had it.

Mitch Matthews: I'm here.

Amy Smith: No, oh, quite the sordid tale of that. No. I think that is... I'm sure you can relate that sometimes the hardest things that we go through are in service of the mission and what we need to actually get out in the world, and we needed to learn those lessons in order to really be a viable voice for people to go, "Oh, I think she might be onto something here."

So, yeah, I grew up in an extremely conservative born again Christian family... very, very dogmatic. It's interesting even now for you and me to discuss faith kind of behind the scenes. It wasn't even until the last decade I'd say where I started to meet people of faith that were identified as Christians that I'm like, "That's not how I was raised."

Mitch Matthews: Right.

Amy Smith: I'm like, "You're cool. You're allowed to have an alcoholic beverage?"

Mitch Matthews: You're actually it seems like enjoying life and happy.

Amy Smith: Yeah, exactly. I had a really tough time even saying the word God for a long time because I was quite scathed by my upbringing.  My father was actually an incredible human, and he had both a master's in divinity and a doctorate in ministry, so he was not messing around.

Mitch Matthews: Right. Exactly. He paid for that.

Amy Smith: He did. He did. He has since passed on. He passed away in 2007, which really was perhaps the impetus for the direction that I ended up taking in my career. At the time I had been studying personal development and started to get my feet wet.

Breaking Through When You Think You Can’t! with Mitch Matthews

Podcast cover

Breaking Through with Mitch Matthews

Welcome to episode 230 of DREAM THINK DO. This episode is a deep dive.

Here's our focus, we're going to go after those areas where there is an inner voice that’s saying “I can’t.”

Maybe one area for your brain knows you want to do something, but another area is saying “I can’t.” And you know those “I can't” are getting in the way of something BIG you’re wanting to do!
Listen To The Podcast:
TRANSCRIPT:
Maybe those “can't” are based on experiences. Maybe they’re based on setbacks, and maybe they’re just based on some fears, right?

We're going to talk about a way to break through those “I can't.”

Most of it is just going to involve a story of my puppy. How about that?
We're going to focus in on a particular area because for us in the United States, I know we've got a dream, think, doers all around the world and I love you all, but specifically this week in the United States, it's 4th of July.
Time to be with family, celebrate all of those things. It's great. I always, always think the Independence Day is a good day to question yourself and say, "Okay, what's something I want to break free of?" Right? Whether you live in the United States or not, it's a good question to ask and to be able to say, "All right, you know, this time next year, whether it's July 4th or even July 1st that's fine because that is also in the midpoint of the year, right?"

“What's something I want to be doing differently by this time next year?”

“What's something I want to break free from?”

“What's something I want to experience, do, achieve all of those things?”
These are great questions to ask. It's an important time to ask, but at the same time, when you start to think about doing something new or taking something to the next level, there's a very good chance there's a part of your brain that might start to scream, “BUT I can't do that.”
Maybe those “cant's” are based on experiences. Maybe you've tried something new and it didn't go so well, or maybe you've tried that exact thing and it didn't go so well. Maybe you went down in flames in front of friends and family, whatever it might be, or maybe it's just straight-up fear of trying something new.
Just fear that it won't go well. Fear that you might make a fool of yourself, those kinds of things, but there's a part of your brain that's screaming, "I can't." Well, I want to go after that part of your brain today as we're talking together. The way that I'm going to do that is to tell you a story involving our puppy, our dog Lily. That's right.

Because I believe in puppies and dogs and the power of such, I will include multiple pictures of Lily on my website. You can go to mitchmatthews.com/230 because if you're a dog person, there's nothing better than puppy pictures, right?
Now, Lily is an Australian Shepherd. She's absolutely a gorgeous dog, and I've been a dog person almost all of my life, well, I've been a dog person all of my life, and I've had dogs much of my life. I grew up with a Samoyed, have had multiple huskies, a Labrador Husky mix, which was an oops, but a beautiful, beautiful dog.

Let's just say that one of our huskies and one of our neighbor's Labradors had relations. It wasn't planned, but it made beautiful puppies, I can tell you. Now we have Lily, our Australian Shepherd. See what I do? I go off on these tangents. That's why these podcasts get to be longer than maybe they should be.
Breaking Through with Mitch Matthews
Anyway, all right, so Lily, when we got Lily, Lily is an Australian Shepherd. If you're familiar with this breed, they're wicked smart. I've had multiple dogs. Again, been a fan of dogs for years, but this dog breed is incredible. I mean, within days of having her, she was tiny. We could hold her in her hands, but yeah she was starting to respond to voice commands very early on. I mean, I've taken Labradors and huskies to obedience training and it didn't always go so well,
