A Major Key In Overcoming Depression and Anxiety [Overcome Depression Livestream]

The latest article from the Overcome Depression + Thrive Blog. In today’s livestream, I’m gonna be revealing…. How the brain “triggers” the chemical imbalance commonly associated with depression and anxiety. You’re going to discover what’s going on “behind the scenes” within our brain when we hold onto negative or fear-based thoughts. I’m also going to share a simple, yet highly-effective technique that’s been proven by the latest neuroscience to quite literally rewire the brain to help reverse depression and anxiety. Sound good? Well, be sure watch this Livestream now!  Enjoy! Watch The Free Masterclass or join the Inner Circle (and, don’t forget to use the Coupon Code: WMH19 and save $170.00.  Don’t Miss Out! Offer Ends 31st October 2019). So, I just want you to imagine that you’re drawing a line through your eye,  from front to back.  And, then I want you to draw another line through your ear.  Now, where these two lines intersect is the home of a very special, tiny structure which has the power to transform your entire life; mentally, emotionally and physically. It also has the power to either keep you stuck in depression or anxiety, or free you from these less-than optimal states, it all depends on how we use it. This tiny, yet powerful structure is called your Amygdala.  We have one on the right side and one on our left side. Simply put, the Amygdala is a structure within our brain which is said to be responsible for the processing of emotions, survival instincts, memory and many other functions. Now, just take a look at the image below.  As this will help you see what’s really going on “behind the scenes” within our brain when we hold onto negative or fear-based thoughts and how the brain actually “triggers” the chemical imbalance commonly associated with depression and anxiety. Here’s the deal… Anytime we hold onto negative or fear-based thoughts or feelings, whether consciously or even unconsciously, our Amygdala gets activated inside our brain.  It lights up! Now, why does this happen and why is this VITAL to be aware of if you want to overcome the likes of, depression and anxiety? Well, simply put…. Our amygdala gets activated because believes that these negative or fear-based thoughts or feelings are a definite sign of danger or impending doom within our environment.  So, to protect us it activates and then sends a signal down our spine to tell our fight/flight system to turn on and then, BOOM!!!  Our Survival Centre gets activated. Now, if you’ve watched my FREE Masterclass, the term Survival Centre will be familiar to you and you’ll also be aware that the activation of our Survival Centre means we quite literally set-off “chemical chaos” or a “chemical storm” throughout our entire body-mind system, which if not stopped, will drive us into the likes of depression, anxiety or may even cause us to experience autoimmune conditions along with a wide range of digestive, reproductive and sexual disorders. Now, as daunting or scary as all of this “chemical chaos” may sound, it’s not as bad as it seems!  You see, if we just check out this image… Can you see the power is firmly within our hands to change this chemical imbalance? In fact, just at a quick glance we can see we have at least two options available to us, if we wanna reverse all this “chemical chaos” (chemical imbalance) and overcome the likes of;  depression or anxiety. The first, is that we simply need to remove the negative thought or feeling, which is the very thing which ‘set-off’ this domino effect of “chemical chaos” in the first place!  Removing the cause instantly transforms the outcome.  It’s the simple laws of cause and effect, right? But, even, if it’s too late…. Let’s say, we’ve thought the thoughts and we’ve ‘triggered’ this entire process of “chemical chaos” within our system, it’s okay.  All is not lost because we can still reverse it. All it takes, is for us to simply de-activate our Amygdala and Survival Centre using proven methods.  And, once we do that,  once we “dial down” these systems, our entire body-mind system will relax and return to it’s optimal, depression-free, anxiety-free state.   Which is exactly what we want! But, how do we do it? How do we start reversing this “chemical chaos” which has been ‘set-off’ by the activation of our Amygdala and Survival Centre? Well, that’s exactly what I walk you through in the Overcome Depression and Thrive Online Program, which you have access to when you join the ODT Inner Circle today.    I step you through proven methods to de-activate your Survival Centre so you can start controlling your internal chemistry, rather than it controlling you.    And, if you’re interested in learning more about the Inner Circle then, simply visit: Overcomedepression.tv But, just for now…. I would like to share a quick and easy, proven way to not only, calm all those incessant thoughts we have in depression but also calm down the activation of our Survival Centre. So, when you complete this technique it’s like ‘hitting two birds with one stone’. You’re calming those thoughts which can ‘set off’ your amygdala, which in turn ‘sets off’ your Survival Centre.  And, then you’re also calming your Survival Centre.  So, this one technique can help you attack the “chemical chaos” which is occurring, from both ends; from it’s starting point and it’s result. So, here are the steps… First, you simply want to make yourself comfortable, close your eyes and take SEVEN long deep breaths. Now, by long deep breaths, I mean, you want to breathe in deeply through your nostrils, keeping your mouth closed.  Do your best to feel the breath reach deep down into your abdomen.  If you can’t achieve this, don’t stress, don’t force anything.  This can take practice if we haven’t breathed deeply or even correctly for a long period of time.   Which most of us don’t in the West and especially, if we’ve been stuck in the likes of depression or anxiety for any length of time. So, this is something that we need to practice but your aim here is to simply feel as though you’re filling the entire abdomen and the chest cavity with air.  So they expand as much as possible for you. Now, this isn’t a competition, there is no right or wrong, just simply keep your eyes closed and feel as though you are completely filling up your lungs. As you breathe in; hold the breath briefly.  Just for a second and then, as you breathe out; release the breath calmly and slowly through your mouth. You wanna do your best to completely empty out all the air from your lungs and this can be made easier by simply pulling in your abdomen gently as you slowly breath out. Then, breathe in and fill your entire abdomen, once again. After completing this cycle of seven long, deep, slow breaths, I want you to simply allow your body to just take over the natural breathing process. Just allow your breath to start flowing naturally without any interference, as you gently turn all of your attention inwards and become completely aware of the natural rhythm of your breathing. Simply ‘watch’ your breathing. Now, what do I mean by ‘watch’ your breathing? What I mean is, with your eyes closed simply observe the natural rhythm of your breathing, in and out.  If possible, feel the incoming breath flowing in past the inner lining of your nostrils.  And, as you breathe out, follow that breathe outwards.  See it move out into the world around you and eventually dissolve. Begin to see and feel your breath as the only thing that exists in your world when you do this technique. Nothing else matters to you in this moment. Just follow each breath and its movement, in and out. Keep your focus entirely on the rhythm of your breathing. After some practice, if you want to elevate this technique then as you breathe in; and you’re feeling that air, flow in through your nostrils, feel as though you’re breathing in peacefulness and tranquility. And, as you breathe out; feel as though you’re breathing out all of your tensions, worries and concerns. Be ‘with’ your breathing, as long as you possible. Place all of your awareness on your breath and simply allow each and every breath to refresh your mind, body and spirit. Once you feel calm, rested and rejuvenated, gently open your eyes and continue your day feeling more refreshed and relaxed. Now, the great thing about this technique is not only is it really simple so anyone can do it but your breath is with you, every single moment of every single day, so you can complete this technique anytime you like to instantly calm the chaos of the mind or de-activate and calm your amygdala and Survival Centre. Do give it a go!  So you can see and feel the positive benefits for yourself. Now, I would like to take a moment to emphasise that to begin with, distracting thoughts WILL rise within the mind when you start doing this technique.  That’s okay, it’s natural, it’s the nature of the mind.  So, don’t struggle with any thoughts or try and push any thoughts away because anytime we tense up and stress about something we’re gonna activate our amygdala and our Survival Centre. Just allow any thoughts to “pass through” your mind, as if they are clouds floating across the sky.  Just, visualise the thoughts simply “floating through” the mind. Yes, you are aware of them!  But, you are not becoming entangled in them, you are not interacting with them.  Just allow yourself to “keep that distance” from them, in the very same way “that distance” or “space” is kept between you and the clouds that float though the sky. Now, if you watched my previous livestream, you’ll already know why we need to stop interacting with any unwanted or negative thoughts if we want to free ourselves from depression!  So, just allow any thoughts whether they are good, bad or ugly, it does not matter!  Just allow them “free passage” through your mind without any interference or any judgements and over time you will see something really magical happen.  Not only, will your incessant thoughts calm down but they will completely change their essence or quality. You will no longer have a QUANTITY of thoughts but QUALITY thoughts! And, it’s all been achieved without too much effort on your part.  And, I don’t know about you but less effort for more results, sound good to me! So, do give it a go and do let me know how it goes for you. Now, if you’ve enjoyed this livestream and you want to discover more proven ways to overcome depression, so you can create a truly depression-free life, then be sure to subscribe, like and hit the bell icon or notifications tab depending upon which platform you’re watching this on! Giving you the tools you need to overcome depression and thrive, whether you’re struggling alone or in a supportive environment! So, let’s get started! Now, recently I received this question: “How do I put a stop to my negative and unwanted thoughts that I have when I’m depressed?” So, that’s exactly what we’re going to be discussing today! Because, this has got to be one of the biggest, if not, THE biggest challenge we all face when we’re stuck in depression! Having to constantly deal with negative or unwanted thoughts (which usually drives us into a state of overthinking!) So, what do we do? How do we stop negative thoughts in depression? How do we rewire our depressed mind so it’s not so heavily weighted towards the negative? Well, the very first step is to understand how the mind works, so we can start using it to our advantage to help lift us up and out of depression. Because, right now if you’re in depression, your mind is working against you!  So, we’ve got to flip that around and have you controlling your mind, rather than it controlling you! So, let me just share my screen here…. Now, if you take a look at this diagram you’ll see, it’s a bit like an iceberg, where you have a small portion above the horizon, let’s call this our Conscious Mind.  Then we have a huge portion, over 90% of the mass is beneath the surface.  This represents our Subconscious Mind. Now, you may have already heard that it’s your subconscious mind that’s the ‘driving force‘ of your entire life and that’s because it’s our subconscious mind is basically a “Storehouse of our tendencies” (you know the things we’re most likely to do, say or be). It stores things like; our Past Actions, Thoughts, Feelings, Outcomes, etc. Now, here’s the deal… It’s our subconscious that drives all of our thoughts.  In fact, let me show you how the natural cycle of thinking works because you need to be aware of this if you ever want to create a truly depression-free life for yourself. So, we have ‘a thought’ which bubbles up from our subconscious. It enters our conscious mind becoming ‘a conscious thought’.  We then interact with that thought or mull over it (thinking). Which in turn, strengthens that very same thought as it returns back down into our subconscious. Generating ‘more thoughts’ which bubble up from our subconscious. It enters our conscious mind becoming ‘a conscious thought’.  We then interact with that thought or mull over it (thinking). Which in turn, strengthens that very same thought as it returns back down into our subconscious. And, the cycle continues…. Now, have you ever been told:  “You just need to think more positively to overcome depression.”  Drives you crazy, right?! Now, if you’re like most of us who have tried any form of positive thinking or affirmations to change our thinking and overcome depression, you’ve no doubt failed.   Here’s why the mainstream positive thinking advice doesn’t work for us in depression… It’s not because of depression! It’s not because there’s anything wrong with our mind!  It’s due to a very fundamental process of the mind (everyone’s mind), let me show you… So, let’s say we start with a positive affirmation or we try to consciously think positive, let’s say we start chanting;  “I am awesome, I am rich, I am abundant, I am worthy, I am loveable!” Aren’t they the usual ones?  Or, something like that! Now, can you see that we’re attempting to do this (change our thoughts) by simply employing our conscious mind? You know, the tiny portion above the surface! But, remember we also have that massive structure beneath the surface;  our subconscious.  So, it’s not long before our subconscious mind joins the game and starts generating it’s own thoughts like:  “No, you’re not! You’re a failure, you’re useless, nobody loves you, you’re a burden, you’re not good enough….and the list goes on…” Then, naturally a tug of war starts between these opposing thoughts within in our mind.  I’m sure we’ve all experienced this silent but chaotic war in our mind, whether we’re depressed or not, right? Well, if we just change this diagram slightly and replace the conscious mind with a tiny kitten and exchange the subconscious mind with an elephant. Who do you think is gonna win this battle? It’s a given, right?!  Of course, the elephant is gonna crush the kitten in an instant!  In fact, it doesn’t stand a chance!  And, this is EXACTLY what happens when we’re stuck in depression and we try to use the mainstream advice of positive thinking or affirmations to transform our negative thoughts! It never works because of this very fundamental process of our mind, where the ‘elephant’ of the subconscious far outweighs the ‘fluffy, fragile kitten’ of our conscious mind. But, the “not working” is not the worst part! The worst part is that when we fail to hold any positive thoughts or we fail to transform our thinking (which is by not fault of ours, it’s just how the mind works), that deep sense of failure then goes on to reinforce the negative feelings we already have about ourselves, which are currently stored within our subconscious!  This makes the negative thoughts and feelings EVEN stronger! Compounding the issue and causing MORE negative thoughts to rise, more frequently. Which is the exact opposite of what we would logically expect to happen, when we attempt to think more positively in depression, right?! So, what’s the solution? How can we rewire our depressed mind? Can we transform our thoughts from negative to positive, even though it appears the mind is working against us, to keep us stuck in this endless loop of negative thinking? Absolutely! There are various ways of transforming our thoughts in the right way to create a depression-free life and overcome depression! Now, we “deep dive” into this topic of transforming your thoughts and your subconscious mind in modules 2, 3 and 4 of the Overcome Depression + Thrive program which you can access when you join the Inner Circle. But, today I want to share 3 steps, you can put to use right away to start rewiring your depressed mind to put you the fast track out of depression. 3 Steps To Rewire The Depressed Mind + Stop Negative Thoughts  STEP 1:  Separate “Thoughts” From “Thinking” Can you see, when you take a look at this image…. There is a “thought” and then, there is the process or “action of thinking”. They are two very different things.  One we CANNOT control. The other, we can. In other words, we CANNOT control WHICH thoughts bubble up into our conscious mind from our subconscious (well, not directly anyway), but we CAN control which thoughts we interact with and give power to. STEP 2:  Stop “Interacting” With Unwanted Or Negative Thoughts You see, here’s the deal… If we want to transform our thoughts in depression we must become aware of and claim our power to decide whether we interact with a particular thought or not, simply because thinking is “an action”. It requires our attention, our time, our energy and our focus, so if we withdraw all of those things, if we don’t consciously interact with any negative thought, we remove it’s power supply.  It doesn’t get strengthened and it starts to lose power because we’re not giving it any energy.  So, when it returns to the subconscious, it’s weaker. So, from today…. Start recognising this cycle of:  Thoughts – Interaction – Strengthening. Start noticing when a negative thought pops up in your mind and then before you dive right into interacting with it, just stop and ask yourself: Does strengthening this particular thought take me closer to my depression-free life or further away from it? Remember, we always have the power to control which thoughts we interact with.  Even if, we cannot control which thoughts rise! So, from today, make a decision to consciously choose to control the mind, instead of allowing it to run riot and control you and you’ll start to see your thoughts slowly transform, as well as your entire life. And, the 3rd step which will help this process is… STEP 3:  Start LOOKING For The Positive You see, our entire body-mind system is intrinsically linked by thoughts and feelings.  That means, we cannot “think” positive whilst we “feel” negative. We cannot superficially uplift ourselves with positive thoughts if deep down, we hate ourselves and think we’re not good enough! So, we’ve gotta turn this around! We’ve gotta start changing how we feel about ourselves, others and the world around us even when we’re in depression.  This will then, allow brand-new, positive thoughts to be generated from the subconscious and allow you to create the depression-free future, you so desire and deserve! But, be careful!  Remember, it’s not about “thinking” positive or simply chanting “positive” affirmations, it’s about looking for the positive and here’s a really simple way of integrating this step into your everyday life… Just for today, start actively looking for the positivity throughout your day.  Now, what do I mean by positivity? Well, to be honest, positivity isn’t usually flashy, with all bells and whistles and flashing neon signs.  It’s subtle, it’s the simple things of life, for example: It’s a kind gesture It’s a smile from a stranger It’s a penny found on the ground It’s a moment when we finally speak up for ourselves or we don’t allow our anger or emotions to get the better of us It’s those times we step ever-so slightly out of our comfort zone It’s when we complete something successfully It’s a thank-you given It’s a baby smiling, It’s a happy pet It’s a warm embrace from someone we love or care for It can even be simply acknowledging those we DO have around us which we usually take for granted And, you know what? It doesn’t even have to involve us directly.  We can see the positivity in the world by watching an uplifting movie that gives us ‘the warm fuzzies’ and motivates us to take charge of our life! The ways to seek out the positivity in this world are endless, but we need to consciously open ourselves up to search for it and recognise the positivity which DOES surround you on a daily basis. I assure you, the positivity is there. We just need to open our hearts and minds to see it. And, the more we look for it, the more we find it.  Then, it becomes even easier to find even more positivity in our world. So, give it a go today and let me know how it goes for you. In fact, why not set yourself a challenge…. For the next 7 days:  Actively look for the positives in your world.  If you can’t find any, keep looking because it’s there!  And. let me know how you feel at the end of these seven days.   Now, in the next livestream I want to explore this topic of transforming our negative thoughts in depression some more, so if you’ve enjoyed this and you’re keen to discover more proven strategies to overcome depression and create a truly depression-free life for yourself then, be sure to subscribe or like depending upon which platform you’re watching this livestream on. Well, it’s NOT your fault and today you’re going to discover why! Not, only that!  But, you’re also going to discover The Five Steps To Rapidly Rewire Your Brain which will help you to break-free from any and all self-limiting thought patterns, behaviours or habits. So, be sure to stay tuned to this episode of Overcome Depression + Thrive. The 5 Steps To Rewire Your Brain To Overcome Depression, That Actually Work! (QUICK LIST) STEP 1:   Accept that everyone (including you) is a ‘work in progress’. We are all caught in self-destructive cycles of harmful thoughts &/or behaviours at different times throughout our lives. We all have patterns of behaviour or indulgences we need to limit or transform. So, stop beating yourself up over yours!  This is the first step in transforming and rewiring your brain to beat depression. STEP 2:   Actively LOOK for the positivity in your life. Don’t try to ‘think’ positive because that will never work in depression when we have strong negative thought patterns, instead the key is to LOOK for the positive in your life. Only then, will you effortlessly begin to think positive. STEP 3:   Sit with what’s uplifting. According to neuroscience it takes at least 20 seconds to help your neurons bond, which is what you want. So, when you notice a positive or uplifting event in your day “sit with it” for at least 20 seconds.  Enjoy the feelings and bathe in those positive emotions for some time. This is proven to help rewire your brain even if you’re currently stuck in depression! STEP 4:   Re-write your past. Actively, interrupt your self-destructive thought patterns. Or, as the ‘old-school’ saying goes: We need to change the record! STEP 5:   Find ONE thing you’ve never been grateful for before. Look out for ONE new thing to be grateful for every day. Read The 5 Steps To Rapidly Rewire Your Brain To Beat Depression Transcript Below… Hi and welcome back!  As always, it’s great to have you here! I’m your host Marie O’Neil, Author of How To Create A Depression-Free Life and creator of the Overcome Depression + Thrive Inner Circle: Your passport to a depression-free future! Now, the science of Neuropsychology, which is the study of our brain in relation to our psychological processes and behaviours tells us that “neurons that fire together, wire together”. Now, what does this mean and how does it help you if you’re wanting to lift yourself up and out of depression? Well, just for a moment, I want you to think about all the activities you complete on a daily basis which are automatic to you… What things do you complete without even thinking? That’s things like; walking, talking, riding a bike, changing gears in your car, flushing the toilet.  They’re just automatic motions we do throughout our days, without any thought. And, we’re able to complete these activities in a very automaton way, because over the years we’ve constantly repeated these actions, over and over again. Which has caused the very same neurons to be repeatedly fired the over and over again, down the very same neural pathways and we’ve literally carved out a highway, a well-worn path within our brains, so we can do these activities without any thought. Now, I’m sure we’ve all heard the saying:  Practice makes perfect. Well, this is the scientific basis behind that very saying! Because, the more we practice or repeat an action, the stronger and more established that specific neural network or highway in our brain becomes. This is when we say things have become “Second Nature” to us. And, this is the exact reason why we can leave the house and not consciously recall whether we locked the door or we turned off the stove or the iron. Because, these activities are so much a part of our everyday lives, they’re second nature and therefore, much of the time it’s difficult to consciously recall whether we did them or not. We do them without even thinking. Now, the majority of us know that this is how our brain is wired to help us perform many routine tasks. It takes the weight or load off our brain throughout our day. However, what we’re NOT usually aware of is that this exact same process of carving out neural pathways in our brain is also happening with all of our repetitive thoughts, behaviours, psychological and emotional responses. This means, our repetitive behaviours, our habits (whether healthy or unhealthy), our common emotional responses, our typical thought patterns and reactions (whether good, bad or ugly) are quite literally carving out and strengthening specific neural pathways within our brains. These patterns of behaviour, emotional responses and thought patterns become second nature to us. For example, if we’re constantly telling ourselves that we’re no good and that we’re failures in life, over and over again. These repetitive thought patterns are quite literally carving out a “I’m a failure” highway in our brain, a neural pathway of failure. So, when we come across any stresses in our lives, or something goes wrong or we feel we’re not getting our dues or just rewards in life, guess what’s going to happen? We’re gonna jump on that “highway of failure” and cruise down it for as long as possible because that’s our automatic response. It’s second nature to us. That’s the established highway that we’ve created within our brain. Our brain cannot do otherwise because that’s the pathway we’ve told our neurons to light up and travel down over and over again! So, take a few moments right now to simply ask yourself: Are there any negative or self-defeating thought patterns constantly running through your mind that you’re struggling to change or let go of? Are there any destructive behaviours or habits you’re repeatedly indulging in that you can’t break-free from, no matter how hard you try? Well, listen carefully because I want you to know that it’s NOT your fault that you haven’t been able to break-free from them yet. It’s simply down to the fact that your current neural pathways are holding you hostage. But, the great news is! You are here today!  And, you’re about to discover how to break-free from the old, self-defeating, limiting neural pathways that are currently holding you back in life and transform them into brand-new, strong, self-empowered superhighways that can propel you forward in life, at a great rate of knots. New neural pathways which will uplift you across all levels; mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. So let’s get started! The Five Steps To Rapidly Rewire Your Brain To Beat Depression STEP 1: Everyone is a work in progress. Simply become aware that we all become caught in these self-destructive loops or cycles of harmful thoughts or behaviours at different times throughout our lives. Nobody is perfect. And, this is how all of our brains work. The truth is, whether these harmful patterns relate to eating a bar of chocolate everyday or swigging another whiskey or constantly criticising ourselves. None of us are saints. We all have patterns of behaviour or indulgences we need to limit or transform. So whatever it is for you, don’t beat yourself up about it.  The key is to simply be aware that whatever we do on a constant basis becomes second nature, whether that’s in the physical, mental, emotional or spiritual realms of life, it does not matter. Practice makes us a master of it. Being aware of this is the very first step in being able to break-free from any self-defeating cycle or self-destructive behaviours. It’s only through this knowledge and understanding of our brain that allows us to use these very natural brain processes to our advantage and transform any area of our lives. STEP 2:  Actively look for the positivity in your life. Now, don’t get me wrong!  I’m NOT saying to “start thinking positive” because that’s not gonna work, if we’ve got well-worn superhighways of negative thought patterns going on in our brain. In fact, if you’ve tried positive affirmations or any other superficial positive thinking advice and it hasn’t worked for you, this is why! There’s absolutely nothing wrong with you, or your mind or your brain!  It’s simply down to the fact that you may have an opposing thought pattern which is a well-worn path within your brain. You cannot simply jump from the well-worn highway to an unmarked path, it’s not going to happen! So, what can you do about it? Well, there’s two parts to the equation: PART ONE: We must break down the old, outdated negative pathways and that’s done by simply reducing our time spent on them. Remember, the more time spent doing something, the more we strengthen that specific neural pathway associated with it. So, if we reduce the time spent travelling down that highway, we reduce its strength and eventually it will just naturally fall away. PART TWO: Simultaneously, construct a new positive highway which rises upwards and towers high above all others. And, we do that by actively looking for positivity within our lives. Trust me, the positivity is there. We just have to allow ourselves to see it and swipe away all those negative news articles of war, chaos and political scandals which are created to keep us on that negative thought highway. So, from today start seeking out the positive in your life. This doesn’t need to be some grand event or grand happenings within your life, just look towards the simple things in life, as they hold the greatest gifts and the greatest uplift that we will find. That’s simple things like: A kind gesture from somebody A smile from a stranger A hug from a friend A thank you given to you A baby smiling The rain against your skin The wind through your hair Laughter around you Start to see the positives in the everyday, mundane occurrences of your life and you’ll rapidly transform that negative highway into a positive, uplifting superhighway, in no time at all. Now, this may seem like common sense but the unfortunate truth is, so many of us are too busy focusing on the negative events throughout our days; the dramas, the mistakes, the conflicts, what’s wrong with someones personality and we let the positive events or the beautiful aspects of a person, just float on by without any recognition at all. We ignore or miss the positive and solely focus on the negative. Simply put, we take the small things like someone simply taking some time out of their day (which they’ll never get back) to spend that time with us, we take these simple things for granted. Yet, we expend so much energy on focusing on the supposed wrongs and injustices of this world. So, what we’re doing here, is turning all that around! We’re flipping it on it’s head.  We’re actively practicing the “art of positivity” and looking for the positives within our lives, because you now know that the more you practice and repeat something the more automatic it becomes. So, throughout your days actively look for the positives in your life so you can rapidly construct that brand-new, self-empowered, positive super-highway which is the key to transforming your life. STEP 3:  Sit with what’s uplifting. Now, what does that mean? It means, when you notice a positive or uplifting event in your day “sit with it”.  Enjoy the feelings and bathe in those positive emotions for some time. Whether that “feel good feeling” relates to a sense of happiness, courage, gratefulness or even a little twinkle of self-confidence, it does not matter what stirs these uplifting feelings within you. Just stop and allow yourself to feel good in those moments. Give yourself permission to feel good. And, if it’s possible, simply close your eyes and see and feel all those positive feelings that are rising within you expand all around you. Now, according to neuroscience it takes at least 20 seconds to help your neurons bond, and keep firing together, which is what you want. You want those positive feelings to ensure that all those positive neurons are firing and wiring together to carve out your positive superhighway.  And, this is how it’s done! Not, by positive thinking but by positive feeling. So, make a conscious effort to start “sitting with” and fully experiencing any uplifting or positive emotions throughout your day for at least 20 seconds or so, and you will be actively transforming your brain, your life and your future. Which is exactly what you want! STEP 4:  Re-write your past. You see, the truth is, we all get stuck in these self-destructive loops because we’re constantly re-playing the same old story, over and over in our minds. So, to interrupt this automatic pattern we need to change the story. Or, as the ‘old-school’ saying goes: We need to change the record! Now, there’s a couple of ways to re-write your past depending upon whether it involves just an event or it involves others. And, I want to share both approaches with you today. 1. The Event-Based Approach: This is the technique to use if you’re constantly replaying a traumatising event or struggle over and over again in your mind. The key here is to ask yourself: What did this event teach you about yourself, about others and the world around you? How have you grown from this struggle or difficult event? Now, if we’re tempted to just say; “Well, nothing great came from it and now my life is ruined because of it!” We need to remind ourselves this is our old, outdated negative neural highways automatically responding. We must instead, take charge of our own mind and redirect our focus away from these automatic responses and actively look for the gold in the situation, because as the saying goes; To every cloud, there is a silver lining. And, if we want to rapidly rewire our brain and transform our lives, it’s our job to find that silver lining that’s there. 2.  The Person-Centred Approach: This is the technique we use when we feel that someone has wronged us, betrayed us in some way, or been the cause of our demise. Of course, we can simply ask ourselves the very same questions of the event-based approach. We can ask:  What did this person teach me about myself, about others, about life and the world around me?  And, this will help us create our positive superhighway. But, we need to delve deeper to truly transform how we see this person in our minds eye. So, instead of looking at them as the enemy or in a harsh light what if we looked at them as someone, just like ourselves? As someone who has struggles in life? As someone who also has the very same brain processes that we have which create these crazy self-defeating loops and patterns in their lives? What if we saw them as suffering from the very same human conditions, challenges, upheavals or struggles in life that we all experience? What if we looked at that person through our compassionate heart, instead of through our judgmental minds? Would it change how we felt about that person? Is there a way you can look towards your past and re-write it in such a way that you see the other person through the eyes of compassion? Not as an enemy, but as another unique individual who must face many of the same trials, hurts, challenges and struggles we all have to face at times. What if you saw them as someone who still has a great deal to learn about themselves, about life and the world around them, just like we are all still learning on this journey we call life? Would it allow you to see the person and the event in a more positive light?  One that can build and support a strong, positive neural highway within your brain, which can transform your life? Can you see, that letting go of your past and looking at someone from a compassionate heart, doesn’t help them, it HELPS YOU? STEP 5:  Find one thing you’ve never been grateful for before. Yes!  This is a gratitude technique but unlike, the majority of gratitude techniques out there which say, list all the things you’re grateful for on a daily basis. This technique is about finding just one thing, that’s all!  Just one, every single day. But the key is, that one thing must be something you’ve never been grateful for before. It’s about looking out for new things to be grateful for on a daily basis. Then, when you go to bed in the evening, simply close your eyes and recall that one thing you’re grateful for. Feel a sense of gratitude rise within your heart and then, consciously expand the feelings of gratefulness outwards. Allow them to surround you completely and just bathe with these wonderful feelings. As, drop off to sleep feeling safe, uplifted and full of gratitude as you literally rewire your brain while you sleep! You can’t ask for better than that, can you? Five Steps To Rapidly Rewire Your Brain: STEP 1: Become aware that we’re all caught in negative, self-destructive loops or thought patterns. That’s the joys of being human, none we’re not perfect and we’re constantly growing, learning and improving throughout our lives. STEP 2: Actively look for positivity in your life. STEP 3: Sit with what’s uplifting.  Sit with those positive moments for at least 20 seconds.  This allows all those positive neurons to really bond and create that positive superhighway that’s the key to transforming your life. STEP 4: Re-write your past by finding those silver linings or golden nuggets you learnt from the event or the struggles you had with a person. These nuggets help build a strong foundation for your superhighway. STEP 5: Find one thing to be grateful for every day, which you’ve never been grateful for before. Now, I’d like to finish this episode with a quote from the infamous Viktor Frankl, an Austrian psychiatrist who spent three and a half years in Nazi concentration camps.  He said: “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” And, he’s absolutely right!  We are not victims of our thoughts. We can choose how we experience or look back upon any event or struggle in our life. In a way, that uplifts us or a way that strengthens those negative thought patterns within our brain, it’s our choice. So, we must never forget, the keys to rapidly rewiring and transforming our brains and ultimately our lives, have always been and will forever be, within our hands. So, get started today, implementing the Five Steps To Rapidly Rewire Your Brain so you can begin to see and feel the tremendous benefits for yourself. And, on that note, it’s time to say, I appreciate you and thank you for joining me today. I hoped you enjoyed this episode. How To Stay Positive When Life Is Getting You Down? [VIDEO]

The latest article from the Overcome Depression + Thrive Blog. In the midst of depression, it’s natural for us to ask: “How can we be positive when life is beating us down?”  “How can we be positive when life seems so negative?” Well, it’s those questions and more that we’re going to be discussing in todays episode of Overcome Depression + Thrive, so be sure to stick around! Press play now to listen to the Podcast Episode or watch the video below. Read Transcript Below… Hi and welcome back!  I’m your host Marie O’Neil and as always, it’s great to have you here! Now, today’s episode has been inspired by an excellent question which has been sent in by Warren. So, let me read it out to you. Warren wrote: “I totally get that negative thinking can affect your life. But when you have had the same negative outcomes in life, how can you be positive?  You can try and lie to yourself and say oh yes this will work out . But, then it doesn’t and it just builds more negativity. If things would work out a bit more I can see being genuinely positive. I don’t think anybody really wants to be negative but when negative stuff continues to happen, how can you really be positive? You say change your thinking, the reality is, if some good things would happen, then you could change your thinking but when you are constantly beat down, it’s pretty impossible to be positive. When so many things don’t go your way, you get programmed to be negative. I have never been so depressed, sad, angry and frustrated in my life.” Thank you Warren for your message. I think it’s spot on and I firmly believe so many others are feeling this exact same way.  How can we be positive when life is beating us down?  How can we be positive when life keeps giving us a crappy deal? I get it!  Because, I used to think along these very same lines when I was stuck in a state of depression. To me, it felt like every time I’d dust myself off and get back up again, life would instantly pull the rug out from underneath me.  And, this didn’t just happen once, it happened over and over again.  So, I completely understand what you’re saying Warren, as I’m sure many others listening day, do to.  We’re all travelling along the very same road, we’re just at different locations along that road. So I want to dedicate today’s episode to you. Now, you write that… You’ve “…never been so depressed, sad, angry and frustrated in your life”.  Good! It means you’re passionate about life, which is a huge positive.  You want better for yourself, you have a love for life. It’s obvious, or else you wouldn’t be getting so pissed off and frustrated about it. So, you have all the energy you need, to get yourself up and out of this negative space. Which is great news! All we need to do, is simply direct all that energy of yours in the right direction.  Towards the solution, instead of on the problem. So, how do we do that? Well, first, I want you to just… Allow yourself to be pissed off with life at the moment! If that’s how you feel, be true to yourself and feel it. Because, it’s common knowledge that whatever we resist, persists.  So, whatever you’re currently feeling embrace it, don’t push it away.  All of our emotions, whether they are seen by society as positive or negative emotion (it does not matter), they are all part of the natural human experience.  They are an inevitable part of life and there isn’t a human being that walks this earth who hasn’t experienced them.  So, if you feel sad – accept it. Cry, if you want to. Or, if you feel angry, that’s fine too. Don’t be ashamed. Just be sure to vent that anger in a constructive, rather than destructive way. For example, go punch a boxing bag until you feel all that anger inside of you has be released.  Do your best to not repress your feelings, because if you’ve watched my video:  Depressed For No Reason, you’ll be more than aware that whatever we attempt to bury or de-press, gives rise to depression in our lives.  So, that’s the first step. Accept and express whatever you’re feeling in a safe and constructive way. The next step, is to realise that nothing will change in your life, until your thinking does.  You’ve written, “…if some good things would happen, THEN you could change your thinking”.   Which is actually just another way of saying that famous sentence: “I’ll be happy when……” And, this mindset causes us to postpone life. Because, you’re really saying is “I’ll start thinking better, when life is better”. But, here’s the key… You’re life won’t get better until you start thinking better. So, you want to flip this on it’s head because this mindset of “I’ll be happy when…” is what’s helping to keep you stuck in a state of depression. Also, the thing you need to be aware of is that your mind, my mind, everyones’ mind has been ‘wired up’ in such a way, that it’s setup to look for or ‘seek out’ all the information, people, situations, or evidence which confirm the current beliefs we hold about ourselves, about others and the world around us.   In other words, if we have a strong belief that, “nothing good ever happens for me” or “I’m not good enough, as I am”, guess what?  You can be sure, life is going to prove you right. As the saying goes; “Whether you believe you can or you can’t – you’re right!” ~ Henry Ford So, to transform your situation, you’ve got to transform your thinking first. Not the other way around. Now, there’s another great point you’ve written and I want to touch on it here because I think many people would also respond this way, which is:  “You can try and lie to yourself and say ‘oh yes’ this will work out.  But, then it doesn’t and it just builds more negativity.” Now, you’re not the first person to say these words to me, but I have to ask: Why do you believe it’s lying to yourself if you have a positive mental attitude going into a situation?  Why is it a lie to believe that something WILL work out for you?   Yes, it’s true! That we can’t instinctively feel that something isn’t going to work out, but then we try and tell ourselves it will.  That is lying to ourselves.  But, having a positive mental attitude before an event and having genuine hope that it will work out for us, is not lying to ourselves. That’s called having faith in yourself or having a strong sense of self belief.  So, I think you need to delve a bit deeper into this mindset to discover what’s at the root of it.  I mean… Do you often enter into situations you know are not going to work out, but then you try and force them work?  Or, do you genuinely believe that hoping something works out in a positive way for you is lying to yourself? For example, if we enter a relationship knowing full well that this person is NOT right for us, but we bend and supplicate and try and mould ourselves into something the other person wants, yes! That is lying to ourselves and it’s lying and being deceitful to the other person too, which is never going to end pretty. But, if we enter a relationship with the belief this person is aligned with us across all levels, mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually and we enter into the relationship with a positive mental attitude, honesty and genuine trust and it still doesn’t work out, that’s NOT lying to ourselves! That’s life. Some things work, some things don’t.   And, when something doesn’t work out for us, it’s not that we did anything wrong and destroyed it. It’s that we had a lesson to learn and life had to work through that other person to bring it to us.  Just, as life works through you to teach others their life lessons.  The biggest thing in depression is having this black and white mindset. This pass-fail, right-wrong, positive-negative mindset.  Life is neither black nor white. It resides in the shades of grey in between. And, the truth is… None of us ever really knows which relationships, jobs, career choices or opportunities are going to work out for us. We can hope for the best but we honestly don’t know.   None of us have the ability to force life to ‘roll the dice’ in our favour. So, all any of us can do, is our best.  And, part of doing our best is stepping forward into any situation with a positive mental attitude. Simply put… A winning attitude – helps us win in life.  And, a defeatist attitude will ensure that we are defeated at every turn! The key to always remember is that it’s our attitude, which determines our altitude in life.  Not, the other way around. But, I want to explore your message some more because, you’ve also written… “…when you have had the same negative outcomes in life, how can you be positive?” Again, another excellent question! And, the answer lies in Step #3, which is to adjust how you perceive your struggles in life. Now, it’s a truth that everybody has struggles in life, and yes!  Some definitely have more than their fair share of hard times thrown at them, I can’t deny that.  But, it’s what we do with those struggles, not the struggles themselves, which truly defines us.  Now, I’m fully aware that it’s easy for me to say this whilst I sit here in my comfy chair on the other side of depression! But, life has had me on my knees, defeated! With absolutely no will to live another day. So, I know this space. In fact, I felt ashamed for allowing myself to get into such a bad state, I hated myself for that.  But, I want to share with you, what I know to be true today and that is, that life doesn’t give you anything that you don’t already have the capacity to handle. In other words… Life is not against you. It’s not punishing you. And, it’s not out to get you. In fact, quite the opposite. It’s simply giving you all the circumstances you need as an individual to grow, learn and mature.  Now, some of those lessons we’ve got to learn aren’t comfy, in fact, they can be downright painful but just like we need resistance to build muscles on our physical body, we also need resistance, challenges, obstacles, hardships in this life to build mental, emotional and spiritual muscle. And, whether you life it or not… Life is simply doing it’s best to reveal your best.  It’s trying to uncover your true essence and inner strength that you have deep inside. As the saying going: “You never know how strong you are, until being strong is your only choice.” Life knows you have the capacity to deal with anything in your life but it knows that you don’t believe that, in yourself. And, that’s why it needs to give you these struggles. To get you to believe in yourself, believe in your courage, believe in your inner determination and resolve. Because, you DO have all of these qualities available to you if you want them. So, do you want them? Because if you do, you have a choice to make. You either: Continue to look at any rough patch or challenge in your life, as life being against you, or unfair, or punishing you in some way. Or,You see it for what it is. Life is challenging you to grow, to transform and expand into something new. Now, I know when we feel defeated, on our knees and on the brink of giving up it doesn’t feel like life is on our side. But, look at it this way… To shot an arrow far into the distance, we need to pull back on a bow, don’t we?  And, the further we pull back on that bow, the further and more rapidly that arrow is propelled forward to reach it’s target. We know this, right? Well, that’s all that’s happening with you right now. You are an arrow and life needs to pull you back for some time, to be able to propel you forward.  Yes, it’s frustrating! Yes, it makes you angry, sad and depressed! But, please be patient, breathe and allow life to propel you forward when it knows you’re ready.  Because I promise you, if you kick and scream and fight the ‘flow of life’ , life will not release that bow and you will remain stuck, simply because, you’re not ready.  However, you will be ready the moment you accept that life has given you whatever struggles it’s given you, for a reason.  And, there’s just 3 reasons life gives us struggles, obstacles and hardships and they are: To learn a positive lesson about ourselves, others or the world around us which can help us grow and expand. To reveal or develop a specific quality in us.To teach others something about themselves, others or the world around them.  Life works through all of us. That’s why it’s so important for you to be here because you are able to bring qualities and strengths to the game of life that nobody else can bring. That is your X-factor. So, start looking at life challenges differently. Life is not against you, it’s not punishing you, it’s not out to get you. It’s just pulling you back for a short time, so it can build up the energy to propel you forward.  And, I assure you, once you’ve grasped any lessons you’re meant to learn, developed specific qualities within yourself, or taught others what they needed to learn, then, with all that inner strength, resilience and courage you’ve cultivated from these hard times, nothing will be able to stop you! Life will propel you forward at a great rate of knots.  But, you need to work with life, rather than against it for that to happen. Now, to be honest I could delve deeper and deeper into this question from so many angles but due of time constraints, I’m just going to leave it there today. So, if you’re feeling as though life is beating you down and you can’t see any positive in any aspect of your life, do your best to follow these three steps we’ve discussed today, which are: STEP ONE: Accept and embrace whatever you’re feeling right now, in a safe and constructive way.  If you’re pissed off and frustrated with life. Fine.  Be pissed off and frustrated.  Be sad, get angry. Now, don’t be angry at anyone. Release it, in a constructive way and always remember, whatever we resist, persists. STEP TWO: To transform your situation, you’ve got to transform your thinking first. This is a fact of life.  So, there’s no point any of us ‘putting off’ or ‘postponing’ life with a mindset of: “I’ll be happy when ….”  or, “I’ll have a positive mind when positive things happen to me”. It’s never going to happen! And, as he saying goes: Don’t put off to tomorrow what you can do today. That includes your happiness, stop postponing it for better times! Start transforming your thinking today and your life will change. And, you can start right now with step number 3… STEP THREE: Adjust how you view life’s challenges. They are not life’s way of punishing you or a sign that life is against you, nor are they a sign that you’ve gone wrong anywhere in your life. They are merely, the resistance you need to grow, to transform and expand into something greater, than what you are today. Life is tempering you in the ‘fires of life’ to refine you. And, always remember… Life tests its best.  History proves this.  There isn’t a great man or woman in history who has had a smooth ride.    They’ve all had to develop great endurance through all kinds of trials, annoyances, provocations or overwhelming hardships.  You are no different. So, I assure you… If you’ve been given trial after trial in your life, you are meant for something greater.  So, start working with life, so your life can unfold and begin to open up for you in ways, you never thought possible. Now, I’d like to finish today’s episode with a quote from a man, who I believe is one of the truly great men of history, Bruce Lee. He said: “Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one”.Bruce Lee Thank’s for joining me in todays episode. (QUICK LIST)STEP 1:   Stop Thinking About Your Thinking!STEP 2:   Separate Thoughts From Thinking!STEP 3:   Calm Your Breathing To Instantly Calm Your Mind! READ TRANSCRIPT BELOW: Hi, and welcome back! As always it’s great to have you here. I’m your host Marie O’Neil, Author of How To Create A Depression-Free Life and the creator of OvercomeDepressionAndThrive.com: Your passport to a depression-free future! Now, just ask yourself… What’s the first thing you normally do when you want to stop overthinking? Have you ever noticed?   Well, if you’re like the vast majority of us, you try to take control of the thoughts or clamp down on your mind, in an attempt to overpower the constant thoughts and force them to stop. But, have you ever just stopped and asked yourself how you’re attempting to stop all those annoying thoughts?  It’s with more thoughts, right? So, we already have a chaotic mind going on and then, we start thinking: “I must stop my mind from overthinking” – “I must stop my mind from chattering” –  “I shouldn’t be thinking like this!” – “I should be thinking like hat instead!” – “Arrrghh these thoughts are soooo negative, I must stop thinking this way!” “If only, I could just STOP all this worrying, then I wouldn’t have to worry so much!”  It’s crazy, right?! It’s really easy to see how we can find ourselves in such a bind or in complete mental anguish or suffering in the likes of, depression or anxiety when we try to stop our overthinking by using this typical method of generating more thoughts, to overpower other thoughts. So, what’s the solution?   How can we stop all this overthinking?   How can we “switch off” all those incessant thoughts within the mind and just simply relax?   How can we free ourselves from all this mental anguish and chaos that occurs when we start overthinking… and then, overthinking about our overthinking… Well, the answer lies in discovering the 3 proven steps to stop overthinking, which I’m going to be revealing to you today.  These steps allow you to easily and very quickly calm your mind and experience authentic inner calmness and tranquility even if, you don’t think its possible for you! Sound good? Well, let’s get started! So, if you haven’t already guessed… STEP 1: Stop Thinking About Your Thinking!  Stop adding more thoughts into the mix. Seriously, creating more thoughts will NEVER stop overthinking, it’ll only worsen it!   So, the very first step is to simply stop trying to fight or rebel against any thoughts or overthinking that’s happening. And, we do that by following Step #2 which is… STEP 2: Separate Thoughts From Thinking!  Here’s what I mean… So, we have thoughts that ‘pop up’ in our mind throughout the day. These can be random thoughts about anything.  There’s positive thoughts, negative thoughts, hateful thoughts, loving thoughts, thoughts about death, thoughts about life. Thoughts about anything and everything are going to ‘pop up’ within your mind. That’s absolutely guaranteed!  There’s nothing we can do about it because it’s the very nature of our mind. But, I just want you to imagine for a moment… You’re walking along the street and you see a poisonous pill on the pavement.  And, you know it’s a poisonous pill because it’s got a great big label on it which says “poisonous!” Now, even though that pill has the potential to harm you, if you simply walk around it and leave it alone, you’ll be fine, right?   It’s not until you take the action of picking up that pill and ingesting it does that pill now have the ability to cause you great harm or even death.  Makes sense, right? Same goes with thoughts.  They’re just like that poisonous pill. If you simply leave them alone, move around them and focus on other things, you’ll remain unaffected by them. You see, troubles like overthinking, anxiety or constant mental anguish don’t start until we decide to take action and move towards specific thoughts.   As in, we start thinking and interacting with those thoughts.  And, as a result they begin to directly affect our mental, emotional and physical well-being.  Either, in a positive, negative or neutral way depending upon the quality of the thoughts we’re interacting with. So, we have ‘thoughts’ and we have the “action” of ‘thinking’.  They are two very different things. Random thoughts, we cannot control but we CAN control which thoughts we think about or interact with.   So, if you want to stop thinking about certain thoughts, you simply need to “cut the connection.” Stop “thinking” about them. Stop “interacting” with them.  It really is that simple. Now, some may say… “But, I can’t stop my thinking!” “I’ve tried anything and everything and I cannot stop my chaotic mind.” Well, I used to believe that too, once upon a time. But, here’s the deal… If you begin to see your overthinking mind as a wild, untamed bull which is bucking you all over the show! You’re being thrown from pillar to post and you seem to have no say in the matter, no control over what’s happening to you.  It’s totally scary because it seems only the bull has the ultimate power in this situation… But, we all know the wildest bull CAN be tamed with skill, determination and patience and that’s all we need to do with our chaotic mind. We simply need to strap ourselves into the saddle, take hold of those reins and tame it! And, how do you tame the chaotic mind?  Well, the answer lies in step #3, which is… STEP 3: Calm Your Breathing To Instantly Calm Your Mind! Did you know, it’s absolutely impossible to have a chaotic mind and calm, deep breathing at the very same time.  It’s physically impossible.  It’s true! I mean, just start observing yourself. Start becoming aware of your breathing when you’re feeling tense, anxious, depressed or overwhelmed and you’ll soon see, that in these states your breathing pattern is shallow, it’s erratic or both.  This is because the mind and breath always go together. If the mind is disturbed or agitated, our breathing is also agitated.  If the mind is calm, our breathing is calm.  And, vice versa. So, why don’t we use this fact to our advantage?!   Let’s not worry about stopping our thoughts by a direct approach! Let’s not concentrate on calming the mind! Let’s instead, focus on calming our breathing which in turn, will naturally and very rapidly calm our mind. Remember, the breath and the mind go together, they’re intimately linked.  What happens to one, directly affects the other.  So, to completely calm your mind and free yourself from all those incessant thoughts stop, stopping your thoughts and instead do this: Simply make yourself comfortable, close your eyes and take SEVEN long deep breaths.  You want to feel the breath reach deep down into your abdomen, so you can feel the abdomen and all the chest cavity expand. You want to completely fill your lungs…As you breathe in; hold the breath briefly.  Just for a second and then, as you breathe out; release the breath calmly and slowly.  Do your best to completely empty out all the air from your lungs.  Then, breathe in and fill your entire abdomen once again. After completing this cycle of seven long, deep ‘clearing’ breaths, simply allow your body to just take over the natural breathing process.Just allow your breath to start flowing naturally without any interference, as you gently turn all of your attention inwards and become completely aware of the natural rhythm of your breath.  Simply watch (observe) your breathing. Allow the mind to simply follow the breath in and out…Try to feel the sensation of the incoming and outgoing breath flow past the inner lining of your nostrils.  Begin to see and feel your breath as the only thing that exists in this world.  Nothing else matters to you in this moment.  Just follow each breath and its movement in and out.  Keep your focus entirely on the rhythm of your breathing. And, if you want to elevate this technique a little more then, as you breathe in; feel as though you’re breathing in peacefulness and tranquility.  And, as you breathe out; feel as though you’re breathing out all of your tensions, worries and concerns.  Whenever your mind begins to wander (and it will), don’t worry. Simply tell yourself; “It’s okay! This is natural.”And, just gently bring your focus back to your breathing. Be ‘with’ your breathing as long as you like. Place all of your awareness on your breath and simply allow each and every breath to refresh your mind, body and spirit.   And, once you feel calm, rested and rejuvenated, gently open your eyes and continue your day feeling more refreshed and relaxed. Now, the great thing about this technique is not only is it really simple so anyone can do it but, your breath is with you every single moment, of every single day, so you can complete this technique anytime you like to instantly calm your mind.   So, do give it a go so you can see and feel the positive benefits for yourself. Now, I would like to take a moment to emphasise that to begin with, distracting thoughts WILL rise within the mind when you start doing this technique.  And, that’s okay, it’s natural, don’t struggle with them or try and push them away.  Just allow them to pass through your mind, as if they are clouds floating across the sky.  Just, visualise the thoughts simply floating THROUGH the mind. Yes, you are aware of them but you are not becoming entangled in them, you are not interacting with them.   So, just allow them free passage ‘THROUGH’ your mind without any interference or any judgements and over time you will discover something really magical. You will experience the fact, that YOU are NOT your thoughts.   That’s right! Those thoughts that ‘yabber away’ in your mind, may ‘pass through’ you, but they are NOT a part of you! They are NOT a part of who you are, as a person. And, once you grasp this absolute fact of life, then no thought will ever hold power over you, ever again! And, you will finally be the master of your mind, instead of it constantly mastering you! So, there you have it! The 3 Proven Steps To Instantly Stop Overthinking. STEP #1:  Stop Thinking About Your Thinking. Stop adding more unnecessary thoughts into the mix because it will just worsen your mental distress and your mental anguish! STEP #2:  Separate Thoughts From Thinking. Because, they are two very different things.  What thoughts ‘pop up’ in the mind we have absolutely no control over! But, we do have complete control over which thoughts we think about because ‘thinking’ is an action and just like any action, we are in charge of whether we do it or not. STEP #3:  Calm Your Breathing To Instantly Calm Your Mind. Implanting Fake Memories Could Treat Depression

The latest article from the Overcome Depression + Thrive Blog. Would you be willing to erase your past to be free from depression? Well, with the latest developments in science this may soon be a reality! To find out more, be sure to stay tuned to this episode of the Overcome Depression + Thrive Podcast to discover if cutting-edge procedures, such as: implanting false memories or erasing painful ones to treat depression would be right for you. Press the play button below to listen to Implanting Fake Memories Could Treat Depression [Episode 4] Read Transcript Below… Hi and welcome back!  It’s great to have you here! I’m your host Marie O’Neil, Creator of the highly transformative – Complete Self-Help System For Overcoming Depression and Author of How To Create A Depression-Free Life: Proven Strategies to Overcome Depression ASAP. Now, if you had a chance to erase some painful memories from your past, so you could no longer recall them, would you do it? And, if you had a chance to implant a handful of false uplifting memories into your brain, so you could have flashbacks of happy events that never actually occurred within your life, would you grasp the opportunity with both hands? You see, even though this sounds like a section from some science fiction novel, fiction is now merging with reality….and quickly becoming science fact. So, how can scientists implant false memories or erase painful ones? Well, it comes down to a new technology called: Optogenetics. This is an advanced biological technique which allows cells in living tissue to be selectively turned on or off by the use of light. But, what does this latest development in science mean if we’re struggling in depression? Would switching off our past, painful memories help us lead more positive, depression-free lives? Well, the latest research in cutting-edge science have found that techniques, such as;  activating positive memories artificially is sufficient to suppress depression-like behaviours. But, the question is.… Will erasing our past solve the root cause of our depression? I mean, how do we know it’s that specific memory which is driving our depression? And, not another? Or, more importantly, is it the memory at all or simply how we’re looking at it? Also, does erasing a part of our past, erase a part of ourselves? These are just some of the questions that this highly invasive treatment of implanting fake positive memories or deleting negative memories for depression brings up. Of course, these are very personal questions and each of us must decide what’s right for us in our particular situation and life path. But, just for today…. Think about how the person you are today is a collection of your past experiences, the good, the bad and the ugly…. And, ask yourself: Would you be willing to erase any part of your past right this very minute? If you’re answer is ‘no’ – why not?  Is it because you can recognise that if you removed those painful parts of your past, not only would you not be the wonderful person you are today but you also wouldn’t have learned the depths of your own inner strength, your resilience and massive capacity to get through life’s challenges. After all, when you look at it…. Your success rate is 100% There isn’t anything that life has thrown at you, that you haven’t already beaten or survived. Whether you realise it or not, you’re a winner by default. On the other hand, if your answer is ‘yes’ you would like to erase some memories – which specific memory do you want to erase or change? And, with that memory in mind, just for today…. As you move throughout your world, just think about this past experience and ask yourself: If it has taught you anything about yourself, others or the world around you? Are there any strengths or hidden qualities it helped you uncover within yourself? What new paths or opportunities did it open up for you? What new people did you meet because of it? Is there a way for you to look towards your past and re-frame it in such a way that it carries a more positive tone? Just for today…. Do your best to uncover the value of your past, be-friend your past and ask yourself is there a way my painful past could help another? And, on that note, I’d just like to say ‘thanks’ for joining me in today’s episode of Overcome Depression + Thrive Podcast, I’d really love to hear your opinion on this topic. Would you erase a memory? Implant fake positive ones? Both or neither? Would you be willing to allow a loved one to do it? Share your opinion below…. Until next time, remember you are a beautiful person! You are meant to be here! You are no better and you’re no worse than the person to the left or the right of you,  you can’t be, you have an essential worth. And, no matter what you’ve gone through, your value and worth as a human being cannot be subtracted from or added to. You are here for a reason and everything you’ve gone through, has only made you a more colourful, amazing and strong person, one who has so much to offer and contribute to this society and the lives of others, in a way that only you can. The Best Step To Fight Depression

The latest article from the Overcome Depression + Thrive Blog. Do you want to discover the number one thing you can do RIGHT NOW to help lift yourself up and out of depression, even if, you have absolutely no energy to do anything about it?  Well, be sure to stay tuned because that’s exactly what we’re going to be discussing in today’s episode of Overcome Depression + Thrive! Press play now to listen to the Podcast Episode. READ TRANSCRIPT BELOW: Hi, and welcome back! As always it’s great to have you here. I’m your host Marie O’Neil, creator of The Complete Self-help System For Overcoming Depression (to learn more, be sure to register for the FREE Masterclass) and the Author of How To Create A Depression-Free Life. Now, today’s episode has been inspired by an excellent question which has been sent in by Alasdair, so let me read it out to you: Hi Marie,  I recently bought your book – which I’ve found really useful – and have also subscribed to your youtube channel and podcasts. I have a question for you which I think would not only be useful for me, but to your other listeners.Your book and your other work is full of ideas to stop and prevent depression. When you’re feeling depressed, however, it’s really hard to find the energy to do a lot about it and when you do try to tackle depression, it’s hard to keep up if you don’t see results quickly.  So, my question is: If you had to prioritise measures or lessons in your book or podcast – which ones would you put first? Which ones should you do first and which ones are most important?(I had a bad bout of depression in February/March/April after a few years of being depression-free – it came about after I had a really, really bad cold and I think that might have something to do with it. I tried lots of the things in your book and lots of other things too – mindfulness, turmeric, exercise, vitamin supplements, drinking more water, avoiding alcohol, screen free Sabbath, keeping a diary of positive experiences etc and I feel a lot better – but because I did all of them at the same time, I’m not sure which one(s) actually made the difference  Thanks,Alasdair Well, firstly thanks for your question Alasdair, it’s a great question and I know exactly what you’re experiencing, because I’ve done the exact same thing myself! I’ve tried a tonne of stuff all at once, my situation improved and then, I thought; Which one worked? Which one was the key? Which one, really did the trick? It makes sense, right?  I mean, we wanna work smarter, not harder in depression!  After all, in the midst of depression we don’t have any energy to waste in working harder! So, we want to make sure we’re smart and we’re using what little energy we do have, on the right stuff! So, which things should you do first and which are most important when it comes to freeing yourself from depression, especially when you have no energy to actually DO anything? Well, Alasdair without knowing you personally or being aware of your specific life situation, I couldn’t say what’s the most important step for you to take first, but I will say this…. The most vital step for anyone wanting to lift themselves up and out of depression, is this:  Accept the moment and just be depressed.  Now, I know this may seem unnatural, it may even seem that you’re working against yourself because I’m basically asking you to do nothing about it.  It seems really stupid, right?   I mean, how can you beat depression if you don’t fight against it or do anything about it?  But, sometimes in life certain situations call for us to go against our natural instincts to survive.   For example, if we’re thrown into a river and we cannot swim, what’s the best course of action?   Is it to struggle and thrash about in the water, to try and take action and do whatever we can to stay afloat?   No, that fighting against the water, only helps to drag us under, it wastes our energy and we end up drowning ourselves even faster.    Whereas, if we were to simply stop resisting the situation, if we stopped fighting with the water and we simply let go of control, relax, and float, we’ll see that the natural flow of the water will bring us to safety.  Well, depression is no different!  The more you fight against it, resist it or try and push it away, the more you’ll be dragged under.   So, from today… Just accept the moment, if you feel depressed – be depressed and let go of all control and judgement and I promise you, you’ll start to see your energy naturally change. But, if we do what we normally do – as in – first – we get depressed and then we get depressed because of the depression.  Now, we have two depressions to deal with: The first – natural one. And, the second – self-inflicted one. Because, here’s the deal…  When our mind takes over and we begin to feel bad about being depressed, the usual thoughts start circulating like….. “Why do I get depressed?” – “I should not get depressed!” – “It shouldn’t be this way!” – “Why does this always happen to me?” – “What’s wrong with me?” – “Why am I depressed?” – “This isn’t right?!”   In other words, we start fighting, tussling with the depression.  And, that’s the cycle you need to break if you want to not only free yourself from depression today but truly, depression-proof your life.   Always remember, the first authentic depression is fine, it’s natural, but the second depression is unreal and this unreal depression will screw up your mind. So, that’s the first, most vital step we need to take when we find ourselves stuck in depression.  We simply need to accept the moment and just be genuinely depressed, without any judgement, fear, shame or anxiety.   Now, let’s explore your message some more Alasdair because, you’ve also written: “You’ve tried lots of the things in my book – as well as – mindfulness, turmeric, exercise, vitamin supplements, drinking more water, avoiding alcohol, Screen-free Sabbath, keeping a diary of positive experiences etc and you feel a lot better – but since you did all of them at the same time, you’re not sure which ones actually made the difference” Well, without knowing you personally or knowing your specific life situation my guess is all of them helped you.  Because, they’re all highly beneficial for different reasons.  Everything you’ve listed either improves mental, emotional or physical well-being.   So, you have a couple of options here: Since all these things made you feel better, you simply drop the need to discover “which one is best” or “which one made the difference” and just integrate them all into your life.  Because, you’ve already said they help you feel a lot better, so why would you not want to include them into your daily life? On the other hand, if you’re dead set on finding out what works best for you, then that’s where option 2 comes in, which is to simply take each of these things you’ve listed and either add or subtract them from your day and notice how you feel.  For instance, you’ve been doing some mindfulness techniques and you’re feeling better but if you want to discover IF these techniques are actually doing anything, then simply stop doing them for a period of time and see how your mood, energy levels and mindset change. Do you feel better or worse?  This is only way we can know what’s truly working for us on a personal level. We either add it or subtract it from our life and see how we feel.   Now, I don’t know whether you’ve heard of the term Elimination Diet before, but that’s a diagnostic procedure where you simply add or subtract foods from your diet to identify which foods cause adverse reactions within your unique body-mind system.   Well, that’s all you’re really doing here, but instead of foods, you’re simply testing which activities or lifestyle changes bring you the greatest benefits.  The key is to not get caught up in worrying about going wrong anywhere. Just give something a go. If it works for you – keep it, if it doesn’t – drop it and find something else.  Now, I really want to emphasis that from what Alasdair has written I believe he’s taken the best approach, any of us can take towards depression and that is, to quite literally surround depression or tackle it from both sides – the body and the mind.  For example, he’s incorporated some dietary changes with the turmeric, some lifestyle changes with the reduction of alcohol and the screen-free sabbaths and he’s included mindfulness into his life which is proven to calm both the body and the mind.  So, he’s taken a well-rounded approach and as a result, he’s feeling a lot better.  And, that’s because he’s integrated things into his life which help to heal BOTH body and mind.  Here’s why that’s important… Just stop and ask yourself: Where’s the dividing line inside you which says mind on one side – body on the other?  Where do your emotions start and your beliefs end?  Where does your body split away from your mind? You see, what we need to be aware of when it comes to overcoming depression is that the mind and body CANNOT be divided. They’re not two separate things. The mind is an inner part of the body and the body is an outer part of the mind, so anything can start in the body and enter the mind and vice versa. We have a mind-body connection, which means, if you truly want to create a depression-free life for yourself and those you love, you need to start integrating things into your daily life, just as Alasdair has done which help to heal BOTH the body and mind.   Now, to be honest I could delve deeper into this question from so many angles but due of time constraints I’m just going to leave it there today… But, the biggest takeaway I really want everybody whose listening to grasp, is that authentic, genuine depression is fine, it’s natural, there’s nothing wrong in it and there’s nothing wrong with you! It’s the second depression, the ‘being depressed about being in depression’ – which is unreal/unnatural and it’s that, which can really screw up our mind, screw up our life and our overall health and well-being.   So, when you find yourself stuck in depression, don’t get caught up in your mind, just do your best to stay grounded in your body. Just relax, accept the moment and simply be genuinely depressed. Feel whatever you’re feeling without any judgement, fear, shame or anxiety.  Now, if you would like help with implementing anything we’ve spoken about today, or you would like a supportive hand to guide you through the process of personally overcoming your depression, then be sure to visit overcomedepressionandthrive.com and secure your private consultation with me today. Don’t THINK Positive – LOOK For The Positive

The latest article from the Overcome Depression + Thrive Blog. To lift yourself up and out of depression stop trying to THINK positive and instead LOOK for the positive. What does this mean and how can it elevate you up and out of the depths of depression? Well, be sure to stay tuned to this episode of the Overcome Depression + Thrive Podcast to discover how you can finally free yourself from negativity, starting today! Press the play button below to listen to Don’t THINK Positive – LOOK For The Positive [Episode 5] Read Transcript Below… Hi and welcome back!  It’s great to have you here! I’m your host Marie O’Neil, Creator of the highly transformative – Complete Self-Help System For Overcoming Depression and Author of How To Create A Depression-Free Life: Proven Strategies to Overcome Depression ASAP. Now, when we’re in depression we all hear the saying;  “You just need to think more positive.” Isn’t it a killer?!  It’s so annoying! It’s not like we don’t WANT to be positive, it’s just downright impossible! And, it’s not because there’s anything wrong with us or our mind. It’s simply because our body-mind system is intrinsically linked by thoughts and feelings.  Which means, it’s absolutely impossible to THINK positive and FEEL negative at the same time. So, how do we get around this in depression? How can we stop feeling so negative about ourselves, others or life in general? Well, the answer lies in not “thinking” positive but instead LOOKING for the positive in yourself, in others and the world around you. So, just for today… Start actively looking for the positivity throughout your day. Now, positivity isn’t usually flashy, with all bells and whistles and sirens blazing!  It’s subtle. It’s the simple things of life: It’s a kind gesture It’s a smile from a stranger It’s a penny found on the ground as we recite; ‘see a penny, pick it up, all day long I’ll have good luck.’ It’s a moment when we speak up for ourselves or step slightly out of our comfort zone It’s when we complete something successfully It’s a ‘thank you’ given, a baby smiling, a happy pet, a warm embrace from someone we love And, the list goes on….. Just for today…. Consciously open yourself up to searching for and recognising the positivity which does surround you on a daily basis. Now, the unfortunate truth is so many of us spend our time, focussing on the negative events throughout our days; the dramas, the mistakes, the conflicts and we allow any positive moments to simply float on by, without any recognition. So, when you DO notice a positive or uplifting experience throughout your day, just stop and sit with it.  Enjoy the feeling, cherish the positive emotion (whether it’s happiness, courage, or even a little twinkle of self-confidence). Just stop and allow yourself to feel good. Commit to spend as much time focusing on the positive happenings throughout your day, as you normally give to the negative. If it’s possible, close your eyes and feel this positive feeling expand around you. Now, you want to sit with these positive, uplifting feelings for around 20 seconds or so, because according to neuroscience that’s all it takes to start laying down new positive neural patterns within our brain. Of course, if you can sit with these feelings even longer, that’s even better!  Because the longer we can make our positive neuron’s fire together within our brain, they’ll start to fuse and rapidly wire together, creating a new, strong self-empowered neural highway in your brain. Which will naturally boost your positivity, as well as your overall health and well-being. So make a conscious effort to start looking for the positive in your life, no matter how large or small and simply sit with any uplifting or positive emotion for a minimum of 20 seconds, and I promise, you’ll begin to see and feel the immense difference for yourself, in no time at all. So get started today and I look forward to seeing you in the next episode of Overcome Depression + Thrive Podcast. Until then, be sure to register for FREE Masterclass: What Causes Depression?  (The True Root Cause), because I really believe it’s going to help you a lot! Talk to you soon – bye for now. Now, I’m excited to say in today’s episode we’re gonna finally get rid of that self-destructive inner voice, once and for all.  And, the great news is…. The solution is quick, easy and painless.  Sound good? Well, let’s get started! First, we need to recognise the mistake we all make when dealing with our inner critic and that is…. Believing that it’s our voice.  Yes! I know the voice sounds like you, it feels like it’s a part of you and it totally feels like you’re constantly putting yourself down, but here’s the key…. That voice is NOT your own! It’s been planted inside of you from the outside world. Don’t believe me?  That’s okay, just think about the moment you came into this world… You DIDN’T leave your mothers womb thinking you’re crap, hating yourself, putting yourself down or thinking you weren’t good enough!!!   And, the truth is… If you didn’t bring these things with you into this world, they’re NOT a part of you! They’re NOT yours. You’ve simply taken on the voice of someone else from the world around you.  This is vital to be aware of if you’re suffering in depression… Because, once you understand this truth, it get’s a whole lot easier for you to free yourself, because you can finally drop all these self-destructive voices.  Just release them, so they can find their real owner, which isn’t you! You see, what we need to be aware of is this… We all come into this world as a blank canvas and over time, other people plant their insecurities, their doubts and their fears inside of us and we unconsciously take them to be our own.   They’re not, they’re simply the crap given to us from the outside world.   So, from today you have a choice;  You either recognise this truth and free yourself.  Or, you continue to buy into the crap and keep yourself stuck. The choice is yours. So, next time you have great self-doubt, a self-critical thought, or you’re putting yourself down in any way, remember, that voice is not your own, so drop it, ignore it, let it go. And, if that’s not easy for you to do… Then, no worries, simply try this instead… Next time a self-critical thought or an unwanted fear or doubt arises, give that voice the tone, pitch and face of someone you totally dislike or don’t respect. Imagine it’s them saying these things to you. And, then let me know if you’re willing to follow, listen or believe them! So, from today start releasing all those voices which are crippling you because they’re not yours!  Remember… If you didn’t come into the world carrying them, they are NOT a part of you! All those self-doubts, fears and insecurities are NOT your own, they are NOT a part of you. That means, they have absolutely NO power over you! They only gain their strength from that which you give them.  So, stop giving them your attention and instead, focus on the thoughts which carry you forward.  Because, the truth is…. You ARE enough, you are not a burden, and you are definitely worthy of love, respect, success and the fulfilment of your dreams. Don’t believe me?  Well, whose voice is it, that you’re listening to? How To Reset Your Brain After SSRI’s or Antidepressant Medications [VIDEO]

The latest article from the Overcome Depression + Thrive Blog. If you’ve been diagnosed with depression, chances are you’ve been prescribed some antidepressant medications as part of your treatment. But, how do these antidepressants affect your brain? And, more importantly, how can you reset your brain after taking these SSRI’s or other antidepressant drugs?   Well, in this episode of Overcome Depression + Thrive, that’s exactly what we’re going to be discussing!   Three proven ways to reset your brain after taking antidepressant medications.  Press play now to listen to the Podcast Episode or watch the video below. READ TRANSCRIPT BELOW: Hi and welcome back, as always, it’s great to have you here!  I’m your host Marie O’Neil, creator of the highly transformative 42-day Overcome Depression and Thrive Online Program and the Author of How To Create A Depression-Free Life. Now, I’m excited to say today’s episode is centred around yet, another fabulous question!  This time the question was asked by Giancarlo in response to my video: How Do Antidepressants Work? After watching that quick video, which gives a basic overview of how SSRIs, SNRIs and NDRIs are said to work, Giancarlo asked: “Are there any supplements and things we can take to reset our brains back to how they were before taking SSRI’s?”YouTube Channel: Overcome Depression + Thrive! It’s an excellent question and that’s why I want to devote this entire episode to it.  So, thank you Giancarlo for asking this question.  Now, before we get started….  If you don’t have a basic understanding of how antidepressant medications work within your brain and how it’s possible for them to quite literally change how your brain works by altering the internal mechanics of your brain, then I highly recommend you go and check out my video: How Do Antidepressants Work? But, if you don’t want to check that out right now, then if I was to sum up that entire video in just one sentence, it would be this: Antidepressants (especially SSRIs, SNRIs and NDRIs) all create an unnatural chemical imbalance within our brain and directly affect how our brain works and interfere with its natural brain processes. So, after having our brain processes disrupted by antidepressant medications, are there any supplements and things we can take to reset our brains back to how they were before taking them? Well, I’m not sure about things we can take but there are definitely proven things we can do to reset and regenerate our brains and today, I’m going to be sharing 3 proven ways to do just that!   So, let’s get started! #1: Get Creative That’s right!  Scientific studies show that if we regularly participate in a creative activity our brains can quite literally reformat or rewire themselves.   Now, the scientific term for this “rewiring of our brain” is known as: Neuroplasticity. Simply put… Neuroplasticity is our brains ability to reorganise or restructure itself by creating new neural connections or neural networks within our brain to compensate for any injury or damage. In other words, if one neural network or highway within our brain is blocked, damaged or ineffective our brain has the ability (via this process of Neuroplasticity) to create brand-new neural networks to compensate for this.    It can quite literally reroute or change neural pathways to ensure our brain is working to the best of its abilities.  Now, why is this vitally important to be aware of after taking SSRI’s or any other antidepressant medications? Well, if we feel we’re experiencing any short or long-term damage from taking these drugs, or we believe that our brain cells have been “killed off” somehow, we need to be aware that our brain is NOT beyond repair. You see, the latest research in the field of neuroscience is proving that brain cells are NOT finite.  Our brain is NOT fixed or unchangeable.  It’s NOT rigid.  So, this belief that many people have about depression and it creating a limited brain or limited brain functions, is just plain wrong.  It’s a misconception based on outdated belief systems and limited science.  Because, up-to-date, cutting-edge science is proving quite the contrary!  It’s showing that our brain CAN and DOES repair and regenerate itself under the right conditions.  All we need to do, is give our brain those right conditions to “kickstart” this process of repair and renewal into action.  Which then allows us to quite literally rewire and reset our brain and get it back to its optimal state.  So, how do we “kickstart”this process to reformat and repair our brain?  Well, scientific studies show that regular participation in creative tasks (especially those involving visual motor skills) such as; pottery, painting, photography, dancing, learning a musical instrument or even juggling, activates this process of renewal and repair within our brain.   So, via simple creative activities we can quite literally rewire and reset our brain! And, do you want to know the best part? We don’t need to be any good at any of these activities!  We just need to participate, learn, challenge our brains and make some progress.  Because, any progress we make (no matter how large or small) is a magnificent sign that our brain is expanding and creating new neural networks and that’s what we’re after!  New neural networks or pathways which expand and enhance our brain, improve cognitive function and get our brain running on all cylinders!   The more neural pathways we can create between all the areas of our brain, the greater capacity our brain has to function at its highest ability.  So, whether you’re taking antidepressants or not, if you want to rapidly reset your brain, going creative is key! #2:  Shift Into Your Thriving Centre Now, if you’ve watched my Free Masterclass you’re familiar with the term “Thriving Centre”, as you know, it’s the centre in which depression no longer exists.   On the other hand, if you haven’t watched my Free Masterclass yet, then naturally, you’ll have no idea what I’m talking about. And, if that’s the case then I highly recommend you go check out my Free Masterclass: How To Rapidly Overcome Depression By Effectively Treating The Root Cause, as this will help give you the big picture overview of what I’m about to talk about.   But, simply put…. Your Thriving Centre is part of your Autonomic Nervous System, which ultimately controls whether you stay in depression or lift yourself out of it.  Not only that…. It’s also key to reseting your brain after coming off antidepressants. Why?   Well, it’s due to the fact, that when we consciously shift ourselves into our Thriving Centre we activate a natural process within our brains, known as: Neurogenesis. Neurogenesis is the growth of new neural tissue or the process by which new neurons are formed within our brain.  In other words… When we shift into our Thriving Centre, not only do we protect ourselves from depression but we can also regenerate our brains. So, by simply completing these first two simple steps: Regularly participating in a creative activity, and Shifting ourselves into our Thriving Centre We can, not only, free ourselves from depression but we also activate two extremely powerful natural brain processes:  Neuroplasticity and Neurogenesis. Which allows us to repair, regenerate, rewire and reset our brains! And, if you’d like to know the right way to shift into your Thriving Centre and rapidly activate this process of Neurogenesis, then you’ll want to check out my 42-day Overcome Depression + Thrive Online Program.   This is where I take you by the hand and show you exactly how to easily and quickly shift into your Thriving Centre.  So, you can rapidly overcome depression, improve and repair brain function, and control your internal chemistry, rather than it controlling you! And, if you’d like to know more about how you can get started today, then simply visit: OvercomeDepressionAndThrive.com/GetStarted. #3: Nourish Your Brain You see, there’s no question that what we eat affects overall brain health and function.   So, if we’re wanting to heal our brain and our entire body-mind system then eating the right types of whole, clean foods which nourish, nurture and restore our body-mind system to optimal health, is key! Now, I’m fully aware that many health professionals recommend supplements for depression, but I’m not one of them.   Simply because of two reasons.   I don’t personally believe in taking supplements, if you do, that’s cool, it’s your choice.  I just personally see them as a “quick, short-term fix” rather than a long-term, workable solution like, changing our diet and lifestyle.  I don’t believe anyone can or even should give a blanket recommendation for a specific supplement (or any medication for that matter) without first knowing the unique internal chemistry of an individuals body. For example, there’s plenty of research out there which says Magnesium is great for depression. But, here’s the thing… If we blindly take magnesium in supplement form without first having a blood test, we could be doing ourselves more harm, than good.   So, that’s why I prefer to advise having a blood test to understand your unique internal chemistry, along with a healthy diet which includes all the right types of foods which are proven to help fight depression, alleviate anxiety and reduce stress as these will naturally improve overall health and well-being. And, if you want to discover the right kinds of foods and spices to include in your diet which have been proven to alleviate depression, reduce anxiety, boost energy and improve cognitive function, then be sure to check out my brand-new ‘Foods That Fight Depression’ section on my website as this will help you to uncover which foods are right for you. So from today, if you’re ever worried about your brain’s health after taking antidepressants, remember… We CAN rewire, regenerate and improve the health of our brain!   And, repairing any damage is not only possible but it’s also proven to be something anyone can do! Our brain is NOT fixed, rigid or unchangeable.  It’s fluid and adapts to our environment, lifestyle and behaviour. In other words… The keys to our brain health and the health of our entire body-mind system are held firmly within our hands.   And, those keys are: Get creative!Shift into your Thriving Centre!Eat, live and think healthy! Now, I hope you enjoyed this episode and found it helpful, if you did, I’d love to know in the comments section below what your biggest takeaway was.   If you have any questions you’d like answered on this show, then be sure to click here to go directly to the #AskMo area and simply enter your questions there.  Also be sure to subscribe for new episodes, because I’m going to be sharing strategies to overcome depression each and every single week. 3 Steps To Stop Feeling Trapped In Depression or Anxiety [VIDEO]

The latest article from the Overcome Depression + Thrive Blog. One of the most frightening things about depression, is feeling as though it’s going to last forever, that we’re never going to be able to get away from all those intense thoughts, feelings and emotions.  We feel trapped. But, does it really have to be that way? Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to be discussing in today’s episode of Overcome Depression + Thrive, so be sure to stay tuned! Press play now to listen to the Podcast Episode or watch the video below. Now, anyone whose been in depression has experienced the feeling that the state of depression is never going to end.  It feels like that space is just going to go on forever, right?  It’s like we’re trapped in a deep dark hole from which there’s no escape.  But, it doesn’t have to be that way!   And, today I’m going to be giving you a quick and easy technique to move you through these feelings as quickly as possible, so you can start to see some light at the end of the tunnel and feel some relief from your depression, anxiety or your fears!  So, let’s get started… So, anytime you feel trapped or you’re facing a situation you don’t like, or you feel great fear or anxiety rise within you, be sure to follow these 3 simple steps: Step 1: Acknowledge + Accept Acknowledge and accept the discomfort you’re feeling in this space.   Whatever you’re feeling is okay, it’s natural.   Don’t judge your feelings, accept them. Accept the fact that fear, the anxiety or the depression is there, but don’t do anything about it.  Don’t pay any attention to your thoughts, simply shift all of your attention to your body, and see if you can sense any tension within your body.   Are there any areas that feel particularly tense or uncomfortable?  If so, then simply tighten and tense that part up as much as possible, and after a few seconds, suddenly relax it.     What we need to be aware of is that if tension doesn’t exist in the body, fear cannot exist.  You see, fear, anxiousness, depression all create a certain tension within the body.   So, if you can relax, your fear, anxiety and depression is bound to disappear.   A relaxed person cannot be scared.  A relaxed person cannot be frightened.  A relaxed person CANNOT be depressed.  And, even if fear, or some anxiety or depression does come, it will just pass like a wave. It will not get roots, because there’s no tension in the body for it to get rooted into.   Tension is the soil in which fear, anxiety and depression require to root themselves into your life.   So, that’s step one; acknowledge and accept the discomfort you’re feeling in this space and relax your body.  Step 2: Time Travel Yes, that’s right! I want you to “jump forward” in your mind to a time and space, let’s say… In a couple of hours or so, where you see the stress of this moment has passed.  See yourself feeling much, much lighter because all the tension and fear of the situation has passed, you’re smiling because you’re now feeling so relieved, relaxed and refreshed.  You’re also feeling extremely confident because you’ve passed through a challenge that once terrified you.  You’ve freed yourself from that dark space which used to keep you trapped. Feel how great it feels to KNOW that you have the power to change any state you’re in, if you just allow it to pass. So, see it pass in your minds eye, and see yourself on the other side of any challenge, successful, confident and vibrant! Step 3: Life Is Change Recognise that everything in life changes.   It’s a fundamental law of this entire universe. Life is constantly changing.  Life is change. I mean, just look at yourself… You are not the same person today, that you were when you were 20 and you won’t be the same person you are today, when you are 80. You are constantly growing and changing.    In fact, there is only one thing permanent in this world, and that is change.  Besides change, everything else changes. Now, I really want you to take in those words… Everything changes in this world, that includes your depression.    Just think about this… The entire universe cannot change its fundamental laws of constant change, just so you can remain in a constant state of depression forever. It’s just not possible.  Nothing remains static in this universe, absolutely nothing.  Which means, depression is something that will change, if you allow it too.   But, the key is to not fight it, to not push against it. To not become depressed about being depressed.  Because, here’s the deal… The first state of depression is natural, it can be sorted. But, being depressed about being depressed, this secondary state is unnatural.   So, we’ve got to drop it and accept that feelings of sadness, pain, anxiety and depression are all natural parts of life.  They are NOT mental illnesses or disorders, they are natural!  In fact, as humans we can bear very intense levels of emotions or depressed feelings.  Our capacity is huge.  It’s only when we lose hope and become demoralised and we forget that we have this huge capacity to experience and cope with these huge array of emotions, that the trouble starts.   So, from today start integrating these 3 simple steps into your life and I promise you, your fear, anxiety and depression will change, because that is the law of the universe, right?  Now, if you would like help with implementing these steps into your life, or you would like a supportive hand to guide you through the process of personally overcoming your depression, then be sure to visit overcomedepressionandthrive.com and secure your private consultation with me today. The question is: Which direction do you want your life to go? Gratitude: The Fast Track Out Of Depression – Part 1

The latest article from the Overcome Depression + Thrive Blog. Scientists have proven that our levels of happiness in life are directly related to the amount of gratefulness we express. In other words, the more grateful we are – the happier we are. They’re connected. But, what does it mean to be grateful and how can a simple expression of gratitude put us on the ‘fast track’ up and out of depression? Well, be sure to stay tuned to this episode of the Overcome Depression + Thrive Podcast, to discover the answer. Press the play button below to listen to Gratitude: The ‘Fast Track’ Out Of Depression – Part 1 [Episode 6] Read Transcript Below… Hi and welcome back!  It’s great to have you here! I’m your host Marie O’Neil, Creator of the highly transformative – Complete Self-Help System For Overcoming Depression and Author of How To Create A Depression-Free Life: Proven Strategies to Overcome Depression ASAP. So, what is gratefulness? Well, the dictionary definition is:  “Feeling or showing an appreciation for something done or received”. In other words, it could be saying ‘thank you’ to someone for being there for us.  Or, it could simply be being grateful and appreciative of what and who we have in our lives. Now, even though science proves our levels of gratitude are intrinsically linked to our levels of happiness, happiness is NOT THE ONLY by-product when we’re consistently grateful in life. You see, studies from Berkeley and Harvard show that being grateful: Strengthens our immune systems Lowers our blood pressure Encourages us to exercise and take better care of our health It relieves insomnia and helps us sleep longer and better We also feel more refreshed upon waking We have higher levels of positive emotions We experience more joy and pleasure in life We’re more alert, optimistic and happy We’re more helpful, generous and compassionate We’re more forgiving We also feel less lonely and isolated And, as if that list wasn’t impressive enough!  Gratefulness is also proven to strengthen and bond relationships, bringing us closer to others. So, if simply being grateful can do all that, we’d be fools NOT to implement it into our lives! But, how do we do it? How do we express our gratefulness in such a way that it elevates our happiness levels and uplifts us up and out of depression? Well, it’s pretty simple. In fact, it starts with just taking a moment right now, to think of a person who has been a positive influence in your life. Now, this could be a teacher, a parent, a close friend, a partner, a colleague, a boss, a coach, a mentor, anybody.  It just has to be someone who has positively influenced you or your life in someway. It could be even be someone whose simply been there for you at a crucial moment in your life, when you really needed someone. Now, there’s just ONE condition for the person that you select. The person must still be alive. And, when you’ve go that person in your mind, I want you to simply take out a pen and a piece of paper and write down as much as you can about ‘why’ and ‘how’ this person has been so important in your life? And, be sure to include such things as: Describing the ways in which they have helped you. What positive qualities have they brought out in you? Write down how grateful you are to have them as part of your life journey. Include how they inspired you to be who you are today? Say ‘thank you’ for everything they’ve done for you. Continue writing, expressing your gratefulness on that piece or pieces of paper, until you cannot write anymore. And, in tomorrows episode of the Overcome Depression + Thrive Podcast, we’re going to discuss the next step, so you can enhance your happiness levels in an instant! So, be sure to stay tuned tomorrow but until then, just for today…. Think of a person who has been a positive influence in your life and then write down as much as you can about ‘why’ and ‘how’ this person has been so important in your life? And, I’ll talk to you tomorrow.  IMAGE CREDIT: Photo by Gabrielle Faith The post Gratitude: The Fast Track Out Of Depression – Part 1 appeared first on How To Overcome Depression Naturally | What Causes Depression | Dealing With Depression | How To Get Rid Of Depression | Depression Help Online.

Depression + Indecision: 5 Steps To Stop Being Indecisive

The latest article from the Overcome Depression + Thrive Blog. In depression, it’s usually pretty natural for us to start feeling like we can’t trust ourselves anymore. We may start to lose confidence in ourselves, along with our ability to make the right decisions.  Do you know that feeling?  Well, if you’re nodding “YES”, then be sure to stay tuned to this episode of Overcome Depression And Thrive because I’m going to be sharing 5 Steps To Make The Right Decision For You, even in the depths of depression! Press play now to listen to the Podcast Episode or watch the video below. READ TRANSCRIPT BELOW: Hi and welcome back, as always, it’s great to have you here!  I’m your host Marie O’Neil, the Author of How To Create A Depression-Free Life and the creator of the FREE Masterclass:  Discover How To Rapidly Overcome Depression By Treating The Root Cause. Now, who hasn’t feared of making a decision in their lives?  We’ve all been there, right?!  We’ve all avoided making uncomfortable decisions. It’s just human nature. So, it’s nothing to be ashamed of. However, the trouble we have when we’re stuck in the midst of depression is that this very natural fear which can arise during the decision-making process escalates and becomes more overwhelming.  It becomes more difficult to push through.  And, this is simply because we’ve lost trust in ourselves or we’ve lost faith in our own ability to make the right decisions.  It’s natural that we feel this way, but here’s the thing….     If we fear making decisions, this state of indecision will actually keep us stuck in a state of depression, here’s why? Just take a moment right now to recall a time when you didn’t make a choice or you backed away from making a decision?  Maybe it was because you feared the outcome or the backlash, but instead of stepping forward and making a decision, you stepped back? Now, whether we’re aware of it or not, it’s this “act of stepping back” which eats away at us inside.  It eats away at our self-esteem and self-confidence. Now, why is that?  Well, it’s because we know what we did. We know in our hearts that instead of stepping forward and making a confident decision, we backed away out of fear, we wimped out and let ourselves down. And, even if nobody else in the world knows this, we know this. And, this knowing tends to make us feel even more useless, more anxious, more fearful, more guilty or full of shame and all these negative feelings, then, go onto to feed the sense of worthlessness, despair and helplessness we already feel in depression.  So, it’s easy to see that indecision (or not making any decisions) actually compounds our depression. It makes us feel worse about ourselves, and that’s the complete opposite of what we want and need when we’re stuck in depression.    So, what’s the solution?  How can we have the confidence to make decisions in a space where we’ve lost confidence in ourselves? How can we learn to trust ourselves again? How can restore the faith in ourselves to make the right decisions?  Seems impossible, right?   Well, thankfully it’s not!  You see, the answer lies in recognising that fear, self-doubt and indecision all belong to the mind, so if we can bypass the mind, we can bypass these fears so we can finally make confident decisions that are right for us. Sound good? Well, let’s get started…Let’s discover the 5 Steps To Make The Right Decision For You, even when you’re in the depths of depression! So, before begin lets imagine you’re faced with a decision right now between Option A vs. Option B and you want to discover the best choice for you. Here’s all you need to do…. STEP #1: Simply close your eyes, take a few deep breathes and relax.  You want to calm down your state of mind because it’s really easy for us to say “yes” to everything when we’re in a great mood and “no” to everything when we’re in a bad mood.  So, we want to level the playing field and we do that by simply stopping, becoming aware of our breathing and calming ourselves right down. STEP #2: With your eyes still closed, gently place your left hand over your belly button, right hand on top. STEP #3: Simply imagine yourself as being a part of the Option A scenario.  Play it over in your mind and see how you feel stepping towards Option A.  For example:  If it’s deciding whether you stay in a relationship or not, Option A will be to visualise life with the person still in it. See yourself moving towards this person and notice how that makes you feel?  Does moving towards the person uplift your energy? Does it make you feel more vibrant and lighter? Or, does it give you have a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach?  Just notice the feelings within your body and after taking note of how you’re feeling it’s time to move onto Step #4, which is… STEP #4: Now, imagine yourself as a part of the Option B scenario. Play it over in your mind and see how you feel stepping towards Option B.  So, if we stay with the previous example, Option B would be to imagine yourself stepping away from that person, away from the relationship and notice how that makes you feel?  Again, are there any reactions in your gut or stomach region?  Does your energy feel more uplifted, vibrant and lighter when you step away from this relationship?  Or, do you have a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach? STEP #5: Simply move towards the option which makes you feel lighter, happier and more uplifted inside. This is your intuition, your inner knowing letting you know what’s truly right for you. So, they are the 5 Steps To Make The Right Decision For You, even when you’re in the depths of depression! And, if we quickly run through them again now, they are: Relax and calm yourselfPlace left hand over belly button (with your right hand on top)Imagine yourself moving towards Option A and notice how that makes you feel.Imagine yourself moving towards Option B and notice how that makes you feel.Move towards the option which makes you feel lighter, happier and uplifted inside. Now, why does this simple technique work? Well, the key is…. What we need to be aware of is that our minds effectively belong to society. They’re not our own. In the sense, that they can be swayed in any direction. I mean, our beliefs can be altered and changed with enough evidence. All of our minds can be manipulated to believe anything with the right quality and quantity of information. So, today our mind can be a “yes” and tomorrow, it can say “no”. Today, our mind is a believer. Tomorrow, it’s a non-believer. Our minds really are kinda fickle, in a sense.  Whereas, our body and our heart are not. They cannot pretend to feel anything that they don’t actually feel, they cannot be convinced of anything which is not the truth. And, that’s the key to this technique! You see, by integrating this ever-so simple technique into your life, you’ll be able to quickly bypass your indecisive, fickle mind which is where all your self-doubt is generated, and connect directly to your gut instincts, your intuition, your inner – tuition, your inner knowing, so you can truly discover what’s right for you on a much deeper level (rather, than following what society says is right for you). Now, I’d like to point out a couple of things so you can get the most benefit from this ever-so simple technique. The first…. This technique is NOT about imagining a scenario as we want it to play out or as we believe it will play out.  This is NOT about visualising a best versus worst-case scenario, because that’s still remaining in our mind, which is not what we want! We’re wanting to bypass our mind. Remember, this technique is about tuning into and connecting with our gut feelings (our intuition) regarding all the options, placed in front of us.  For example, it’s not about imagining… “If I stay with this person, this will happen, that will happen, and that will also happen.” It’s about simply imagining yourself walking towards or away from a specific option and noticing how that movement (towards or away) makes you feel. And, secondly… Sometimes the option that makes us feel better or uplifts us, is not necessarily the one we want or maybe it doesn’t make logical sense to us, right now. But, let me ask you….. Have you ever experienced a situation, where you were in a situation and you had that gut instinct that ‘this is wrong’ or ‘I shouldn’t do this’ but you went ahead and did it anyway, only to regret it later on? I think we’ve all done that! We’ve all kicked ourselves for not listening to ourselves (our gut instincts). You see what we must always remember, is that our gut instinct (our intuition) is always trying to lead us in the right direction, all we have to do is listen. So, trust your intuition, trust your heart and trust what your feelings tell you about a person, an environment or a situation and you will never go wrong. Now, as you can see the 5 Steps To Make The Right Decision For You, even when you’re in the depths of depression are really simple and easy to implement into your daily life. Trust in yourself, trust in life and stop allowing indecision and fear to hold you back and down in life, because you deserve more!   And, on that note, it’s time to say thanks for joining me in todays episode of Overcome Depression + Thrive, I hope you enjoyed it!  If you did, I’d loved to know in the comments section below what your biggest takeaway was. I’m your host Marie O’Neil, Creator of the highly transformative – Complete Self-Help System For Overcoming Depression and Author of How To Create A Depression-Free Life: Proven Strategies to Overcome Depression ASAP. Now, recent studies have shown that a natural compound found in a common household spice is just as effective for treating major depressive disorder, as taking Fluoxetine or Prozac.[1][2] Studies also revealed that this natural compound has the ability to not only reverse the development of depression, but also influences several mechanisms in the body, in particular:  It’s a powerful natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Now, why are the anti-inflammatory properties so important when attempting to alleviate depression? Well, because scientists have found that people with depression have greater inflammation and oxidative stress in their system, which can affect all major organs of the body, including the brain.[3] In addition, chronic inflammation can lead to a decrease in the levels of serotonin and dopamine in our brain. All symptoms commonly associated with depression. So, what is this natural compound found in a common household spice? The compound is called Curcumin and it’s found in Turmeric. Now, Turmeric is a bright yellow aromatic powder obtained from the root of the Curcuma Longa plant, a member of the ginger family, which grows in India and other Southeast Asian countries. Turmeric is what gives curries their distinctive yellow colouring.  But, if you’re not a fan of curry, no worries! There are still ways to increase your intake of Turmeric on a daily basis to help alleviate or reverse the development of depression. For instance, you can add Turmeric to your rice whilst it’s cooking, add it to soups or smoothies, you can sprinkle it over your eggs… Of course, these are just a few examples!
