This week it’s our 50th EPISODE, WOO!  Maggie’s still slogging along on the k1p1 strip of doom as well as encouraging a newbie, while Karen has achieved Ravellenic gold.

The achievement doesn’t end there, though, as Curiosity made a successful landing on Mars!  Which has rightly given a lot of notoriety to a couple JPL staff members, in the geekiest way possible.  (Hint: it involves Tumblr.)  We also have news on virtual helpers you might see in your local airport some time soon and some goodies for Dr. Who fans.  Especially for knitting Dr. Who fans, as we’ve found some seriously awesome needle gauges and WPI tools from one particular shop.  We also have squeals over the new fall Twist Collective!

Finally, we have squealing over some knitty/nerdy goodies that listeners have sent us. THANK YOU GUYS!

We have a contest!  Comment on this episode either here at the blog or at our Ravelry group and tell us about something geeky you’ve discovered in the last year before Sept. 14th for the chance to win a prize!

Rank #2: Episode 104: Counting is Apparently Not Our Strong Suit

Yes, we said it was episode 105, no there isn’t a missing episode 104.  Whoops.

Anyway!  In Adventures in Knitting, Karen and Maggie both went to the Kitchener-Waterloo Knitters’ Fair!  We met awesome listeners!  We bought yarn and fleece!  Our credit cards took a great deal of damage!  So, you know, as usual.  Meanwhile, Maggie has acquired a loom, though she still needs a couple bits and pieces and to learn how to actually use it before she weaves anything.  Of course that gives her more time to work on mostly super secret stuff for the swap, though she did also finish her mother’s shawl on time!  Karen’s working her brains out on her Rhinebeck sweater (message from the future: this status has not changed) as well as designing and working on her swap project and on the Myrtle scarf for her mother from some yarn from last year’s Rhinebeck.

In Geek Squee, Karen and Maggie also went to FanExpo!  There was some cosplay and the MingNa Wen panel and the Hayley Atwell panel (#peggysarmy!) and some super awesome people and lots of awesome stuff, if also some super long, hot days and SO MANY PEOPLE OMG.  Also, Karen’s having a meltdown over the promos for the new season of Agents of SHIELD (message from the future: that also hasn’t changed).  We also discuss the case of the teen from Texas who was arrested for building a clock and the awesomeness that ensued, as well as the cool discovery of a new entry in human evolution by an all-female team of scientists (and caving badasses because holy crap claustrophobia).

In Cravings, Covets and Crushes, one of the booths we saw at the Knitter’s Fair and that Karen had to restrain herself from spending all the money at is Georgian Bay Fibre Co., who has AMAZING STUFF, and Karen’s found a sweater pattern for the music nerd in your life, and which offers opportunity for super nerdy modifications.

WE’RE GOING TO RHINEBECK!  We’ll be at the Ravelry meetups at “the hill” at noon on Saturday and Sunday as well as the podcasters meetup at 1pm on Saturday in the same place, and we’ll be walking around the fair wearing our Knit 1 Geek 2 or Agents of SHEEP t-shirts (Karen will also have her Peggy Carter hat!) so if you see us, say hello!  And if you’re taking the Empire Service train south to Rhinecliff early on the Friday, look for us on the train!  We love meeting listeners and there could be recording on the train/at the fair, so….

Also, we’re on Periscope!  Follow us (@knit1geek2) so you’ll see when we’re doing a live broadcast or catch the broadcast in replay in the next 24 hours afterward.  There will likely be Periscoping from the house in Rhinebeck. :D:D:D

Rank #3: Episode 98: It’s a Hobbitalong Miracle

Podcast cover

In this episode, Karen and Maggie are firmly ensconced in the blanketfort and they are never coming out.

First:  Sheep to Shawl!  Karen and Maggie were part of the Agents of SHEEP that competed at the Royal Winter Fair Sheep to Shawl competition in November.  Despite being mostly first time competitors, an early start, a wheel that BROKE MID-COMPETITION their shawl won *drumroll*……FIFTH PLACE of nine teams!  And just as important or possibly even more so, a certain Agent of SHIELD retweeted their team photo, which your hosts are *still giggling over*. :D:D:D

In Adventures in Knitting, Maggie finished the Grimm Scarf, have made (unpatterned) a slouch and a beanie from her handspun for Christmas gifts, started working on Alice Socks by Patti Waters for a friend from college, but switched to Patti’s Zipper Socks for ease of knitting, and the Swirly Mittens for her mother are…still going.  She’s also SUPER EXCITED about seeing Gabriel Iglesias perform when she goes back to the ancestral homeland. Karen, meanwhile, is almost done the There and Back Again Story Scarf (aka the Scarf of Doom).  SO CLOSE.  Sooooooo close!  Of course she also knocked two days off the time she had to finish it because she couldn’t resist the urge to go to a Hobbit movie marathon.  Whoops.  She’s even planning a project to cast on as soon as she’s done: the Tauriel Socks from the Winter 2014 Knitty.

In Geek Squee, Karen and Maggie try to keep it short but can’t resist freaking out about the mid-season finale of Agents of SHIELD because OMG YOU GUYS.  Also because there was a certain knitter pilgrimage location that was used as a location in one of the episodes.  Also they  both saw Big Hero 6 and LOVED IT.  Seriously, diverse group of superheroes that use science to save the world, a giant cuddly robot; this is right in our wheelhouse.  Karen is also loving the show “The Librarians” and its cheesy, cheesy goodness, Maggie’s enjoying “Constantine” and is making a sadface at the thought it might get the axe, Christopher Lee (Aka Saruman the White from Lord of the Rings, aka the actual most interesting man in the world) has released a heavy metal Christmas album, and apparently there was some Star Wars thing that happened recently?

In Cravings, Covets and Crushes, we’re squeeing over quite a few things in the new Knitty, Karen has a new mug from potter and ceramicist Maaike Charron which is *super adorable*, and we found the source for all the super cool Marvel con-exclusive merch you see at New York Comic Con, ReedPOP Supply Co.

We want to do a Google Hangout with our listeners during the holidays!  Check out the Updates thread on the Ravelry board or our Twitter feed for details!

Have a great holiday, everyone!

SPOILER ALERT!  Spoilers for Agent Carter Season 2 up to episode 5 from 44:55 to 51:25!

In this episode, there’s some kind of sports thing going on, apparently?

In Adventures in Knitting, Maggie is working on a bunch of baby gifts including a Vivid Blanket and a couple seekrit things as well as the Shiny mitts that are a gift for someone as well.  She’s also working on a Jaffrey Hat, and a pair of Zipper socks (FOR HERSELF OMG) as well as a bunch of spinning.  Also, she has big personal news which, YAAAAAY.  Karen, meanwhile is trying to stick to finishing things instead of casting on ALL THE THINGS like she wants to.  She finished the Myrtle Scarf and the cowl for her mother, and started a pair of socks using a scroll lace pattern she found in one of her stitch dictionaries.  She’s also working (intermittently) on the Zick Zack Scarf.  Also she miiight be starting the Crocus shawl by Hiroko Payne because a giant beaded, nupped, laceweight shawl is totally what she needs right now, especially as she’s started sewing and is gaining quite the fabric stash, AND she’s tried a little weaving thanks to a loaner loom.

In Geek Squee, Karen saw Star Wars: The Force Awakens and enjoyed it (and especially enjoys kids of all genders loving Rey as a hero), while Maggie has a date to go see Deadpool.  Also, yay new season of Agent Carter and OMG X-FILES IS BACK!  Neil deGrasse Tyson is saving us all from people who legitimately still think the world is flat via RAP BATTLE (also Karen’s going to see him speak and is SUPER EXCITED).  Hoever on a sad note, everyone raise your wands for the passing of Alan Rickman.

In Cravings, Covets and Crushes, in representation news, Barbie is now adding curvy, petite and tall versions to the their doll lines and Lego has introduced a minifigure in a wheelchair, yay! Also, the new Lego Marvel Avengers game is out and OMG KAMALA KHAN IS IN IT (also Squirrel Girl!  And Clark Gregg as Coulson, of course :D).  If you’re looking for some more unique adult colouring books, check out the #ColorOurCollections link roundups for some super awesome images from various museum and library collections, including Medieval illuminated manuscripts, Victorian natural science images and many more!  Karen’s dying to do the Crazed Scandinavian Cowl by Wendy Johnston because of course she is.

We’re doing a knitalong!  We’re doing the CanConKAL/CAL – a celebration of Canadian designers and yarnies!  As the Canadian dollar is so terrible right now (but really good for those in the US or Europe!) you can use Canadian milled/sourced/dyed yarn and/or a pattern by a Canadian designer (which includes people that were born in Canada and moved elsewhere, as well as those born elsewhere and who now live in Canada–you’re Canadian to us. :D).  We’re planning to start late March and finish projects by Canada Day, July 1st.  Stay tuned for the thread in the Ravelry group for a list of designers and yarn providers!

In Adventures in Knitting, Maggie is working on socks for herself using the Zipper Socks pattern by Patti Waters, the Celtic Myth shawl and she’s got Sweet Georgia yarn that she’ll be using in the Pixie Farts mittens for the CanConKAL/CAL.  Karen, meanwhile, is working on stuff which is not working out, so she’s very little she can discuss, especially as March Break is looming.  But Episode 1 of the Indigodragonfly Geek Club arrived!  And she’s almost done the Rhinebeck sweater! ….From last year.  She’s also decided she’ll be doing the Mystic Star shawl in Tanis Fibre Arts yarn for the CanConKAL/CAL.

In Geek Squee, we got the new Ghostbusters trailer, eeeeee!  And Karen is still not prepared for Captain America: Civil War, but is happy that she has the comfort of knowing Agents of SHIELD has been renewed for Season 4 already.  Karen’s been doing some video game playing and OMG FIREWATCH YOU GUYS LOVE IT SO MUCH.  If nothing else you really should watch the playthroughs by YouTube user Markiplier’s as well as the one by friend of the show, WenchFaery.

In Cravings, Covets and Crushes, Maggie really wants to see Zootopia and Kung Fu Panda 3 (message from the future: Karen saw Zootopia and looooved it).  ThinkGeek is tempting us again with A Game of Thrones-inspired cellphone case, and Karen is dying to read Clara Parkes’ “Knitlandia”, considering the Rhinebeck chapter alone gave her feels.  If that’s not enough fiberyness for you, check out the St. Fagin’s Museum LambCam and check out the archives for this year’s lambing season!  SO MANY BABY LAMBS.  Also HOLY CRAP THE CELTIC RAVENS SHAWL.  Guys.  Guys.  You need to see this designer’s stuff it is AMAZEBALLS.

The CanConKAL/CAL is underway, but don’t despair, you can join in any time (and there’s another group doing one in the summer)! :D).  We’re planning to finish projects by Canada Day, July 1st.  Stay tuned for the thread in the Ravelry group for a list of designers and yarn providers!

Yes, it’s commentary time!  This one was  recorded back around Christmas when Karen’s brother was home for the holidays and they recorded a commentary for the movie that pretty much was their childhoods: Jurassic Park.  Hear tales of what it was like back in the dark, dark days before the internet, marvel at how Jurassic Park is the *worst designed theme park in the world*, and savor Samuel L. Jackson being his Samuel L. Jacksoniest.

So grab your DVD, Blu-Ray or (legally obtained of course) computer file and hold onto your butts!  Welcome…to Jurassic Park.

This week we have projects that are ongoing and that are nearing completion.  Good thing too, as we’re starting our first knitalong!  In geeky stuff, there’s some wtf in the form of changes to the Oscar rules, a SOPA-like bill going through Canadian Parliament, and Voldemort reading fanfic.  In the squee, there’s some non-breakage of a major website, a kick-ass teenager who will possibly rule the world someday, and a Certain British Actor reading some naughty, naughty things.  We’ve also got a couple places where knitters and crafters can give back.

The Watson-along is up and running!  We’re knitting the Elementary Watson Socks and other projects inspired by the cabled sweater John Watson wears in the first series of BBC’s Sherlock.  Can’t participate just yet?  No worries, you’re welcome to start at any time!  Check out our Ravelry group for discussion and updates; if you’re not on Ravelry, email us with your projects and we’ll post them on the blog, if you can’t comment on the blog itself (we’ve been having spammer troubles, so it might be a little problematic).

(And yes, somehow there is a lot of thumping and bumping in this week’s ‘cast.  Our bad!  We’ll be sure to remember to pad the mic stand next week.)

This week, Karen and Maggie are joined again by Newbie Lauren, who’s been having some trials and tribulations with her knitting.  Maggie, meanwhile has been making progress on her Hobbitalong project, while Karen’s is…progressing.  Slowly.  Oh, and we got to name a new Blue Moon Fiber Arts colourway.

Of course there’s a certain item of news that came out the day after we last recorded that has Karen shrieking (literally, at the time) so we have to cover that as well as a recent trailer that causes some squealing and speculation.  There’s also news of an epic movie clash coming in 2015, some epic breakfasts to fortify you for any unexpected journeys you may be going on, and probably the coolest airport artwork ever.

We’re also dying to get our hands on the Hobbit-themed Moleskine notebooks, a new comic starring toddler versions of some of our favourite superheroes, and we feature a couple new books, one of nerdy haiku and one of knitted holiday plushies.

The Hobbit: A Long-Expected Knitalong has begun!  There’s no required pattern or yarn, just the goal of completing a project of your choice before The Hobbit opens in theatres on December 14th.  Feel free to post progress and pictures here on the blog, or chat about your projects in the thread over on the Ravelry group!

On this week’s episode, the adventures in knitting have taken a toll due to end-of-the-summer craziness, but there’s some adventures in yarn buying and some grandiose plans to make up for it.  This episode is also brimming with cute and LOLs (thanks to a couple inventive tumblr accounts and a band with a flashback to our childhoods) and some news about an upcoming movie that has us rather excited.  Finally, in case you needed more projects on the go, there are a few patterns we’ve found/been hearing about that are pretty tempting.

We’re going to be on the road on Sept. 10th, hitting up the Kitchener-Waterloo Knitters’ Fair!  And the something special mentioned in the podcast shipped today, so if you’re coming, be sure to find us and say hello!

As ever, you can email us at knit1geek2@gmail.com or join in the discussion on the Knit 1 Geek 2 Ravelry group.

In this episode:

Celtic Knot Stole

Blue Moon Fiber Arts

While she’s not using the pattern itself, Maggie’s using the Uptown Boot Socks as inspiration for the peace socks.

Karen has finally updated her Ravelry pattern page!  Now you can see pictures of the Potions Master Stole, the Aphrodite Socks, the Viper Pilots and the Nameless Brainless Socks.

As mentioned above, we’ll be at the Kitchener-Waterloo Knitters’ Fair!

Jamieson’s Spindrift

Wollmeise - click on the link at the right side of the bottom banner to see the page in English!

The Loopy Ewe

Adventures with Wall-E (OMG SO CUTE EEEE!)

From Mark Gatiss himself: Sherlock is finished filming! Benedict doesn’t look too happy about it though

Hustlin’ Holmes tumblr because there’s nothing geeks love more than macros using Microsoft Paint.

OK Go’s rendition of The Muppet Show theme

Updates on Brave, including some info on the plot.  OMG IS IT NEXT SUMMER YET?

Gudmundsdottir by Carol Sunday

Yet another pattern by Cookie A that we’re losing our minds over: the PB&J socks

So I kind of caved and bought the pattern for the Beekeeper’s Quilt.  Check out the tips, swaps and knitalong at the Tiny Owl Knits Ravelry group.

In this bigger-than-usual episode, there’s the return of a poor, neglected project on Karen’s part and some slogging through a current project and important travel knitting decisions on Maggie’s.  We squeal over a new trailer (BRAVE, OMG!), an idea for some holiday baking, some good news about geeks in higher education and some legislation that could affect a lot of people on the internet.  There’s some discussion of our favourite things in one of this week’s new online knitting magazines, a handy list of excuses for buying yarn as well as some self-examination to see just how hooked on knitting we are.

This week there’s lots of OMG!! and SQUEE!!  but first there’s a finished sweater for Maggie and some socks that are getting close to the finish line for Karen after some ripping.  And then it’s time for the three squees: OMG JKR is writing a new book!  OMG there’s a clip from “Brave” online! OMG there are promo pics for the next Star Trek movie!  And when your eardrums have healed, there’s also an application that uses Google Maps that’s both fascinating and creepy, an amazing T-Rex costume, Lucy Lawless being a Warrior Princess for the earth,  and news on the possible love child of the phone and the tablet. Finally there’s more squealing over a good mail week for Maggie, and a book suggestion for those looking to use up some of their stash.

And speaking of using stash, the Stashdown is on!  You make your own rules and goals and knit/donate/gift/sell your way to a lighter stash!  …Just in time for a lot of fibre festivals, of course.  Don’t have much stash?  Keep an eye on the Ravelry group for those that are getting rid of theirs!  Email us, comment on the blog or at Ravelry and your name will go into a draw for a special something at the end of April.   (And yes, Watson-along projects count!)

We’re back!  This week the Ravellenic Games are in full swing, though sadly one of us didn’t make it past the qualifier. That just means there’s more  projects to talk about, though!

There’s also a lot of geek squee, especially about the latest Mars Rover landing as well as a real-world version of a certain robot that hits Karen’s squeal button pretty hard.  There’s also a kickstarter campaign for a documentary that might appeal to the space nerds amongst us, as well as some Avengers movie casting news.  Also, apparently a billionaire has been toying with the idea fo cloning dinosaurs.  We all know how this movie ends.

Finally there’s some gorgeous yarn and fibre to share, as well as an upcoming figure of a certain SHIELD agent that’s making Karen squeal.  Not that that’s difficult to do.

SPOILER WARNING: our Avengers spoilers start at 29:56 and go until 1:01.  (There’s a little discussion tangentially related to the Avengers after that point, but nothing spoilery.)

In this Hulk-sized episode, Karen and Maggie squeal about the Avengers.  A lot.

But first there’s some knitting going on, and some finished projects from Karen, one of which you might have to go back quite a few episodes to find discussion for.  Meanwhile, Maggie’s breaking her usual project monagamy for something a little more challenging.  Or will be, once she figures out what it is.

In Geek Squee, there’s a couple notes for the Benedict Cumberbatch and Sherlock fans!  There’s some news on Cumberbatch’s role in the Star Trek movie, as well as a recent Q&A for Sherlock fans in New York to kick off Series 2 finally debuting in the United States.

And then there’s our Avengers report.  This is what happens when we see a highly-anticipated movie together, people!  There’s our non-spoilery impressions first, then we get into spoilerville and trust me, you really don’t want to know spoilers before seeing this movie!

Be sure to stick around after the Avengers stuff, though, as we have a prize to draw for those who participated in the Stashdown contest!  Missed out on the contest but trying to curb your spending/use more of your stash?  The thread is still open and there are quite a few people still trying to be good about their yarn consumption!

Just a reminder for anyone in the Kenticky area, Karen’s going to be at the Kentucky Sheep and Fiber Festival on May 19!  She’ll be travelling with muggles, so she’s not sure how long she’ll be there, but if you’re going, be sure to look for her; the first 10 listeners to find her will get a sticker.

After holidays and car troubles and computer troubles, we are FINALLY BACK!  We have lots of knitting to catch up on as well as some chatter about how our holidays went and a couple of the things Santa brought us.  There’s a lot of big geek news to catch up on, what with a trailer for a certain Peter Jackson movie having come out a couple weeks ago, and of course there’s a lot of Sherlock-y news (including some spoilery discussion about the new movie–see below for the time codes if you don’t want to be spoiled!).  And finally, there are a couple things to start the new year off with, and provide some inspiration for the months to come.  Oh, and we’re not sure if you can hear it, but Karen was running a fever without realizing it when we recorded.  So blame any weirdness on that.  Really.  Because we’re not like this every week. *innocent look*

This week, we have alcohol.  No, for real this time.  It’s been a long week, and Karen’s got little progress on her projects and a mojito, while Maggie has achieved quite a bit more and started a new project.  Oh, and she’s got a London Fog or two under her belt.

However, there’s lots of geek news including some geeky art of the knitted and digital variety and an article about science coming to the rescue of cashmere-producing goats.  On the movie front there’s a trailer for a movie that we only have to wait two months for this time and some behind the scenes featurettes for one of the two Snow White adaptations we’re looking forward to, as well as another modern classic getting the 3D treatment.  Oh, and geek god Nathan Fillion has some interesting casting news (squee!).

As for Cravings, Covets and Crushes, there are two books, including one filled with patterns for nerdy types, and a picture book to warm any knitter’s heart.   There are also a couple patterns that to feature, including one that just blew our freaking minds, and a KAL and a referral to a coupon code if you want to get your Lord of the Rings on.

Stuff happened!  Holidays!  Presents!  Trips!  Illness!  Also, the volume is kind of messed up in spots, thanks to recording over Hangouts.

  • Critical Role‘s second campaign has started!  More to catch up on than when we recorded, but there’s now an audio-only podcast, soooo…
  • Black Panther (at the time of recording) is coming out!  And they have girls in the merch pictures, and people have been donating to buy out movie theatres so kids can see it. :D  And again, buy cool stuff from Box Lunch Gifts and help feed people as well.
  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi came out and Karen really enjoyed it!  It was…a bit long, but still good!

SIGNAL BOOST!  So it’s been a terrible couple months for a lot of people.  Hurricanes in the Caribbean, earthquakes in Mexico, wildfires in California, the Las Vegas shooting…2017 is the worst.  So there’s a lot of people who could use your help.  If you’d like to support those in need right now, check out the following pages for some links to places where you can help.  And to all our listeners in the affected areas, if you have knitting patterns on Ravelry, put them in the Pimp Yourself thread on the Ravelry group, and if there’s another way we might be able to help, just let Maggie or I know.  We love you guys.

In Adventures in Knitting for this episode, Maggie’s finished her Kai Mei socks and sent them off to their recipient and is so close to finishing AdminMonkey’s sweater…except she might need more yarn.  Whoops.  She has also conquered the brioche!  Which means she’s figured it out, not that she’s actually working on a brioche thing right now because now that she knows how to do it after casting it on 6 times, she wants to see other projects.  She’s also been doing some weaving, and is actually on to a for realsies project!  She’s also gained another hobby (because of course that’s what she needs), painting gaming miniatures!

Karen, meanwhile, has ditched all the projects she was working on because she’d hit the doldrums with them.  So what helps with knitting ruts?  Casting on some Monkey socks, of course!  That doesn’t mean she isn’t working on something overly ambitious, as, um, she kind of decided to sew a costume for FanExpo liiike…ten days beforehand?  She also went on the TTC Knitalong since the last recording, which was awesome!  And exhausting, but also awesome!  Also, Karen will be at Rhinebeck this year!  Find her and give her hugs!

In Geek Squee, Maggie’s started watching a Geek & Sundry series about painting miniatures: Painters’ Guild!  Of course it doesn’t hurt that Matt Mercer was the first guest.  We’ve also found twitter user mazzmatazz who is crocheting amigurumi of the ENTIRE D&D Monster Manual, as well as the perfect instructions for D&D nerds to leave for those looking after their cats when they’re away, namely, in the form of a campaign.  In case you needed a rabbit hole to dive down, the British Library has digitized the entirety of Leonardo DaVinci’s sketchbook.  SO. AWESOME.  Also awesome?  OMG THE THIRTEENTH DOCTOR IS A WOMAN. WE ARE SO EXCITED.  Less exciting is James Cameron thinking we need his opinions about Wonder Woman.  Let’s just look at this adorable photoshoot of kids dressed as the Justice League, okay?  And there was also a solar eclipse.  Man, that feels like a long time ago.

In Cravings, Covets and Crushes, Karen has another newbie game review, this time of CRPG “Pillars of Eternity” which is SUPER ADDICTIVE.  And may feature some voices familiar to Critical Role fans. ;)  She’s also started doing some streaming of video games, which you can find on our YouTube channel!  You can find our Guide to Rhinebeck  periscope video from last year on our channel as well.  We’re also dying to get the Critical Role comic and art book.  BTW, the Japanese poster for Wonder Woman?  NEED A POSTER OF THAT, HELLO.  Also, it’s getting colder, so we have the Resist hat, to go with your resistance mittens from a few months ago.  There’s also a new store in Toronto called the Curiosa Society which is Harry. Potter.  Themed.  We need to make a road trip!  And finally, a new member of our knitting group has a podcast on YouTube called Spinning Woolly Yarns, so go check it out!

Anyone interested in a swap later this year/early next year?  Let us know!

SPOILER ALERT!  Spoilers for Wonder Woman from 33:50 to 52:30!

So much celebrating.  So tired.

In Adventures in Knitting, Maggie is still working on the Brownstone sweater for AdminMonkey and will be working on it for the foreseeable future.  So as not to lose her mind, she’s also working on Kai-Mei socks and she’s FINALLY WEAVING!  Karen, meanwhile, is still working on the Locke Street cardigan and will be also for the foreseeable future, though she did feel compelled to cast on socks in Cozy Knitter’s “Come TOgether” colourway for a Blue Jays game.  She’s also been swatching a couple things but is resisting looking for patterns because she really needs to work on the sweater.

Also, um, Karen finally has a full-time job?  Which means she has a very predictable schedule, and can sign up for things like the TTC Knitalong!

In Geek Squee, EEEEEE WONDER WOMAN EEEEEEE.  We were not disappointed.  In other things, we saw a cool art print of the Star Wars characters as if it was set in the Middle Ages, as well as an official Star Wars animated webseries, Star Wars: Forces of Destiny, which is ALL LADIES ALL THE TIME.  There’s also some much-needed updates coming to the Pirates of the Caribbean rides at various Disney Parks that sound very cool.

In Cravings, Covets and Crushes, there’s a new Blue Moon Fiber Arts colourway that we really want (#ShePersisted!), and Karen has been lusting after (but unable to acquire) a self-striping yarn from Must Stash Yarns, “Beauty and Her Beast”.  Two guesses what the colour inspiration is.  Just guess.  Also, guys, we suuuuuper want to make the Wonder Woman Wrap.  WANT.

SPOILER ALERT!  Spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 from 40:05 to 49:47!

In Adventures in Knitting, we went to the Knitter’s Frolic!  And…Maggie actually bought more yarn than Karen did.  This…this is weird.   Maggie got some Brooklyn Tweed shelter for Jared Flood’s Brownstone pattern, which she’s making for Admin Monkey (who’s doing much better, yay!) and of course some Blue Brick for some brioche knitting, the practice of which is…not going well.  Karen got the Frolic-exclusive colourway from Indigodragonfly and the Frolic project bag.  That’s it.  They also went to the Frolic Podcaster meetup!  Thanks for organizing it, Ramona!  (Also the word Karen mentions that doesn’t translate into English might be her mis-remembering the first entry from this article? Or it could have been a different article with a slight mistranslation, as she’s seen a couple in writing this)

They also went to the Harry Potter-themed bar in Toronto, The Lockhart.  Sooooo many tasty drinks, though your hosts declined to join others in their group in sampling the ghost pepper-infused tequila.

Karen also went to Ottawa and of course visited one of the local yarn stores, Wabi Sabi, and bought some weaving yarn.  She also did quite a lot of knitting…though not on the big project she brought intending to get a lot done on it.  Whoops.  Said big project is the Locke Street sweater, which she’s doing in some yarn she overdyed last summer.  She did finish the Tauriel socks, though!  The Continental-practice sock is goign much more slowly, though.

In Geek Squee, we have seen Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and enjoyed it!  We’re also super psyched for Wonder Woman (message from the future: we were so not prepared) and, not surprisingly, rolling our eyes at the douchebros.  Maggie has also been watching American Gods, though Karen has not, and there was an article about Star Wars in Vanity Fair, the pictures from which were giving us the feels.  Also, OMG there’s a group of people that are turning the songs from the musical “Hamilton” into a musical about the story of Critical Role.  So excited.

In Cravings, Covets and Crushes, OMG NERDY PURSES AND BAGS INCLUDING A PEGGY CARTER ONE.  WANT.  Loungefly, TAKE OUR MONEY.  Also Karen is SUPER EXCITED for story mode of one of her favourite video games, “The Long Dark”.  We also have a new (ish, to us) indie dyer, Scrumptiouspurl and a really cool potter on Etsy, Remembrances Pottery!  There’s also a knitting magazine called “Rib” that’s dedicated to knits for men, and there’s some really nice patterns inside so far.  Karen’s also been listening to a podcast called Viking and the North, which are a pair of knitting geeks from Toronto who will hopefully post more soon (though like we can talk, I mean really).

SPOILER ALERT!  Spoilers for the new live-action Beauty and the Beast from 48:25 to 55:11!

Reminder: We’ll be at the Toronto Knitters’ Frolic on Sat. April 29th and there’s going to be a podcast meetup!  Hallway straight back from the entrance doors, 1pm. Come meet a whole bunch of podcasters!  We’ll have buttons!  And if you’re looking to have lunch around 11-11:30ish, we’ll be in the same area.  Also don’t forget about the Frolic Social on Sunday!  Details at the Toronto Knitters’ Frolic website!  Also, Karen will be in Ottawa the weekend after the Frolic, so if anyone there wants to get together some evening for a knit night, let her know!

It’s been a month, y’all.

In Adventures in Knitting, Maggie has been working on socks from a sock blank and did her first Afterthought Heel, and has started another pair.  She also needs to do some darning of some older socks, sadly.  She’s also planning some selfish family knitting, including a Brownstone sweater for AdminMonkey in Brooklyn Tweed Shelter, for herself Sunday Drive in Tanis Fibre Arts yarns, and the Elfling is going to wait until the fall as he tends to grow.  Also, new weaving tools have arrived, yay!

Karen, meanwhile, has finished both LilliPilli and Mystic Star, but hasn’t blocked either.  She also made the Autumn in Garrison hat and has unearthed a very very old sock project, the Tauriel socks from Knitty, which she’s doing in Knitsch.  She also may have started a pair of socks in KnitPicks Felici, and is still dithering over what sweater to make next.  And she…may…have…bought…yarn.

Oh, and, um, apparently we were reviewed on the Smart Bitches, Trashy Books blog.  OMG. :D’

In Geek Squee, we saw the live action Beauty and the Beast and we are suddenly tweens again.  We also saw the latest Wonder Woman trailer, and we’re praying that it’s as good as the trailer promises.  There’s an amazing Jurassic Parkour video that totally made Karen’s day, and she’s also been happy that one of the video games she loved from last year, Firewatch, won a couple BAFTA video game awards!  Also, OMG SQUIRREL GIRL IS GONNA BE ON TV in the Marvel New Warriors show that’s going to be on ABC’s Freeform next year!  Finally, Carrie Fisher’s family has approved the use of her likeness in Episode IX.

In Cravings, Covets and Crushes, we found bath bombs inspired by Critical Role characters and which contain a random die, and our friend Marsha of One Geek to Craft All is making Critical Role-inspired stitch markers.  Also, the amazing dyer behind the Blue Brick has created a book of patterns that are designed to go with ombre yarns!  And last but not least, Karen has really been enjoying a series of romance novels with nerdy heroines, and she wants the third book in the series right now omg.

As it’s National Sibling Day, here’s a commentary from Karen and her brother, Steve!  This time they watched an instalment from another series that was big in their teenage years: the 1995 James Bond movie Goldeneye.  Marvel at the ancient computers!  Roll your eyes at the Bond franchise’s lurching attempts to not be as sexist as past movies!  Puzzle at the facial expressions that count as acting!

While the episode was recorded for listeners to watch along, for those that can’t/don’t want to, you can still listen as a regular podcast, albeit with a few empty spaces we would usually have cut out.  Otherwise, grab your VHS tapes and join us as we watch the adventures of the other Time Lord in popular media.

SPOILER ALERT!  Spoilers for Rogue One from 1:00:10 to 1:03:56!  Spoilers for Season 4 of Sherlock from 1:11:20 to 1:19:14!

Political talk from 00:02:55 to 00:23:48, in case you really don’t want to hear it for whatever reason.  You’ve been forewarned.  Also since we recorded, things have not entirely improved so the call to action is still valid for many reasons!

*sigh*

ETA: This is kind of a test as we’ve had to find a workaround for hosting this file for the moment. Our hosting is still there, it just won’t accept files for unknown reasons.  Send Admin Monkey some hugs!

Adventures in Knitting!  Maggie has finished Lilli Pilli and it has been sent to its recipient!  Maggie made a Pussyhat out of her own handspun!  Her Celtic Myths shawl has had…problems, which Karen is encouraging her to ignore in favour of finishing it.  She’s also been working on a Jasmine Scarf, again out of her handspun, which has been going much better, as well as some Chevronnes gloves for the Admin Monkey.  In addition to all that she’s also planning a Rumplestiltskin wrap for a wedding gift, which is out of DK< so it’s…slightly less crazy than it seems?  Maybe?  And she’s getting more parts for her loom, so weaving is ever closer!

Meanwhile Karen has been doing bugger all because she’s been sick for the last month.  Maybe a little work on the Lilli Pilli stripes, though she’s also running out of yarn for one of the stripe colours, but gives no fucks.  Since feeling a little better she’s been working on the Mystic Star shawl, where she found the last skein looks like it has a different dye lot, but again, gives no fucks.  Diagonella socks have mostly been in hibernation because big surprise, projects for public transit don’t get as much done when you’re not going to work as much.  This lack of progress on anything hasn’t stopped her from lusting over some yarn from Topsy Farms, however, which is begging to be made into a sweater.

Also, we have started a new stashdown thread for 2017!  Karen has goals, many of which are the same goals from last year because she…kinda didn’t complete last year’s goals.  Whoops.

Geek Squee!  A San Jose city councillor was sworn in holding a Captain America shield! <3 <3  We’ve also been watching a bunch of stuff, like Rogue One, Hidden Figures, Sherlock, and the Magicians!

Cravings, Covets and Crushes!  Karen is super tempted to do the Heroes of Yarnia Knitting RPG scarf, which is completely mental but SO COOL (there’s also an MKAL blanket starting soon!).  Karen is also thankful that she doesn’t really crochet, because the Schjeepes Hygge shawl CAL looks amazing but also definitely one of those “go big or go home” projects.  We also love the Peace de Resistance mittens, and some of the proceeds are going to charity, so check them out!

Also, we have CONTEST WINNERS!  :D

SPOILER ALERT!  Spoilers for Doctor Strange from 1:15:00 to 1:21:00 and for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them from 1:23:40 to 1:34:45!

So, politics happened, and is…kind of still happening as of this being posted?  But we’ll avoid talking about that, and just say: be Peggy Carter and Steve Rogers.

In Adventures in Knitting, Maggie finished the Kai-Mei socks by Cookie A, as well as a Fly Away blanket by Tin Can Knits, for a coworker that’s going on maternity leave.  She’s also loving her Tito hat from the Blue Brick, which is good as it provides the feeling accomplishment that her Celtic Myths shawl doesn’t as it languishes in the WIP pile.  She’s also been working on Lilli Pilli since Rhinebeck! She’s ALSO been working on the Milanese Lace Topper, because she hasn’t done enough already.  Karen, meanwhile, finished her Cockatoo Brae sweater in time for Rhinebeck, yaaaay! Her Lilli Pilli has not fared quite as well, however, as she cast on for it on the train, knit the 50 rows of stripes, then had to rip back to the first row.  She also cast on for a pair of Diagonella socks because she totally forgot that she already had a pair of socks in progress, the barely-touched Unicurves socks.  She also finished her first real weaving project, a scarf made out of sock yarn oddments which she hasn’t been able to wash yet as she’s been too busy wearing it.  She…may also have acquired more yarn.

Also, we went to Rhinebeck and had a great time, and met a ton of great people (and played some epically nerdy D&D)!  Karen also appeared in a video called “Tell Me About Your Rhinebeck Sweater 2016″ by youtube user kristyglassknits.  Is it October yet?

We also competed at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair Sheep to Shawl Competition, with a shawl inspired by 221B Baker Street. You’ll have to listen to hear how we did.

In Geek Squee, Maggie is now thoroughly addicted to Critical Role, for which Karen feels no shame.  In movie news, there’s finally a trailer for the live-action Beauty and the Beast and Karen is losing her mind, and Doctor Strange and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them both finally came out in theatres!

In Cravings, Covets and Crushes, the Blue Brick added another colourway, Maple, which we waaaaant.  Also, the IndigoDragonfly Geek Club is open for signups again, Think Geek has a lamp that will tug at the heartstrings of Harry Potter fans, and we have a new purveyor of nerdy yarns, Critical Knits!

We’re doing a couple contests!  Tell us what new thing you learned in 2016 for a chance to win your choice of one of two skeins of the Indigodragonfly Sherlock-inspired yarns and a TARDIS project bag (as well as a couple other goodies), and/or tell us what you want to try in 2017 to win the skein of self-striping Ravenclaw yarn that Stitch Please gave us to give away (as well as a few more goodies as well).  One post in each entry thread please, and post by January 20th!  If you’re not on Ravelry, post your entry here or tweet/email us and we’ll pop it in the thread for you.

We’re back with a delayed episode and very brief show notes for the moment, because Karen’s trying to get this up before she runs out the door to Rhinebeck.

In Adventures in Knitting, Maggie has been knitting a bunch of things, including the Jasmine Scarf and the Professor Higgins Socks, and went to the Kitchener-Waterloo Knitters Fair, while Karen is still working on Cockatoo Brae, which…has a slight problem.

In Geek Squee, there’s some cool planetary news (as well as some less-than-cool mansplaining going on), as well as a super geeky webseries that Karen’s fallen for, and yay, new TV season is starting!

In Cravings, Covets and Crushes we’ve found another place with some seriously cool geek merch, which we promise we’ll link within a couple days.

We’re going to be at Rhinebeck!  Come see us at the Ravelry meetups from 12-1 on Saturday and Sunday and at the podcaster meetup at 1pm on Saturday!  Karen will be wearing the Peggy Carter hat, so she’ll be easy to spot, and if you see us some other time that weekend, COME SAY HI!

Also, Karen’s currently hosting the @PeopleOfCraft twitter account, so check that out, follow it and volunteer to host for a week yourself!

After a very long, very tiring summer full of college assignments, work, traveling and computer failures, we are FINALLY BACK!

In Adventures in Knitting, it’s been damn hot, but we’re still knitting!  Maggie had a big adventure and went to Savannah, Georgia, then was off to Disney World and Universal Studios (including the Wonderful World of Harry Potter and Karen is SO JEALOUS).  She didn’t have a lot of time to knit on her trip, big surprise, but she has still been working on gifts for family, including some socks in Loki-inspired self-striping yarn (we’ll double-check the dyer & name), Pixie Fart mittens from the CanConKAL, the Professor Higgins socks, and the Dragonwing Cowl.  She’s also still working on the Celtic Myths shawl, and has started a Jasmine Scarf.  At least when she hasn’t been crocheting something at the last minute for GISHWHES.  Best of all, though, AdminMonkey is FINALLY A PERMANENT RESIDENT OF CANADA, WOO.

Karen, meanwhile, has mainly been working on Cockatoo Brae (which she has…completely changed the plan for the colourwork section for, whoops, especially as she later figured out that she really did only need five colours for the yoke, OH WELL), and occasionally working on the Mystic Star shawl which is still super not done, as well as occasionally breaking the monotony with her Unicurves socks.  However, she has been doing a little sewing, and she finally got a rigid heddle loom.  Now she’s just waiting for summer craziness to be over so she can actually use it.

In Geek Squee, women are doing AMAZING stuff at the Olympics!  Sadly the media coverage is the opposite of awesome. >:(  What is completely awesome is that the ALS Ice Bucket Chalenge has funded research that has identified a gene that is linked to occurrence in ALS, which makes treatment that much closer a reality.  And in shallower news, Tom Hiddleston is on Instagram and has been posting pictures of himself dressed up as Loki, soooooooo yeah, we’ve been slightly distracted.  We found an article about someone in Texas that has been leaving crocheted pokemon at Pokestops, and the patterns are on Ravelry, so you can make your own!  Also, there was a book that came out recently that, big surprise, we were very interested in: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.  No spoilers in this discussion, but it was…interesting.

In Cravings, Covets and Crushes, the Knitter’s Fair is coming up, and we will be there!  Keep an eye out for our Agents of SHEEP shirts and Karen’s Peggy Carter hat, especially as she will have buttons to give out.  And of course we’re going to RHINEBECK!  Counting down the days, guys, counting down the days.  Karen has a new edition of Karen’s Newbie Gamer Reviews, as she’s been pretending it’s not a million degrees outside by playing The Long Dark, a survival game set in the Canadian wilderness during winter.  Ahhh, crunching snow, howling winds… *happy sigh*.  Karen also recently found out about a local farm that has their yarn and fibre for same online, Linc Farm!  They also have farmyard tours, so your intrepid hosts might have to do that sometime soon.

SPOILER ALERT!  Spoilers for the 2016 Ghostbusters movie from 25:21 to 1:17:48!

It’s been a crazy summer and Maggie’s on vacation so there’s a couple episodes to come.  However, in the meantime, Karen saw the new Ghostbusters movie and, well, she had to talk about it, big surprise.  So she’s joined forces with Page Branson of the Level 7 Access Podcast for discussion and giggling.  Lots of giggling.  WE REALLY LIKED THIS MOVIE, OKAY.

We had technical difficulties and we lost a good part of Adventures in Knitting.  However it’s a good thing the episode was delayed and I needed to record an intro, as there’s something actually important to talk about first, namely helping the people that have been displaced and have had homes and businesses destroyed in the wildfires around Fort McMurray, Alberta.  If you want to help, check out the charities listed at www.charityintelligence.ca, as well as the Edmonton Emergency Relief Services Society.   The fire is still burning, and communities in the area are still in danger, so help is definitely still needed.

As for what remains of Adventures in Knitting, Karen ripped out her Mystic Star shawl and started over in a larger needle size, as well as did a lot of math to figure out whether she’s likely to run out of yarn.  She’s also working on the Unicurves socks by Jeannie Cartmel and is very close to getting a rigid heddle loom!  She also had some adventures in dyeing, though she’ll probably wait for warmer weather so she can try solar dyeing.

In Geek Squee, we got set photos from Doctor Strange (which has led to a hilarious photoshop meme) and Benedict happened to stop in a local comic shop in NYC in costume.  In other Cumberbatchy news, Sherlock Season 4 is filming, this time with a female director, and there are some set photos that have leaked as well.  As for movies, we got the trailer for Star Wars: Rogue One , with another lead female character (yaaaaaaaaaaaaas) and we saw a super adorable family cosplay at C2E2: Finn, Rey and Baby-8!  WE also found a news story about a 9-year-old reporter that we want to be when we grow up.

In Cravings, Covets and Crushes, we’re both crushing on colourwork-yoke fingering weight sweaters: Maggie on Akebia by Kate Gilbert, Karen on Cockatoo Brae by Kate Davies.  We’re both nuts, in case you hadn’t figured that out from every other episode.  Also, Blue Moon Fiber Arts has two new yarn bases including a sparkly one because we REALLY NEEDED more reasons to buy yarn. Not.

The CanConKAL/CAL is underway, but don’t despair, you can join in any time (and there’s another group doing one in the summer)! :D).  We’re planning to finish projects by Canada Day, July 1st.  Stay tuned for the thread in the Ravelry group for a list of designers and yarn providers!

*eyes date this was recorded*  *eyes date it was posted*  WELP.

:D).  We’re planning to finish projects by Canada Day, July 1st.  Stay tuned for the thread in the Ravelry group for a list of designers and yarn providers!

We have a much more recent episode and the audio on this one is…not great.  If you’ve never listened to the podcast before…maybe don’t listen to this one first?  Unfortunately we had to choose between recording in the cafe where we have knit night or not recording for two weeks over the holidays, so we went with recording in the cafe, which means there’s quite a bit of background noise.  I’ve tried to get rid of the worst of it, and hopefully you can still make us out.  We’ll record a proper episode soon!

In Adventures in Knitting, Maggie can’t really talk about her swap projects yet because the package still hasn’t arrived, so she’s talking about the Bob Socks and the Intermezzo cowl instead!  Karen, meanwhile, can finally talk about her swap projects, as well as her progress on the Myrtle Scarf and the Honey Cowl, and what she’s hoping to work on over the holidays (spoiler alert: she didn’t get a chance to do any of it).

In Geek Squee, STAR WARS!  Which  Karen did not have a chance to see at the time of recording, so while we could discuss reporting about the movie, you’ll have to wait for a review.  Also, Netflix has released patterns and instructions for socks that can tell when you fall asleep and pause your TV (!!!), we’re not discussing Agents of SHIELD because everything is painful and everything hurts, OMG Captain America: Civil War and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them trailers(!!!!!!!), and there’s been some really cool casting for the Harry Potter sequel play, “The Cursed Child”.

Finally instead of Cravings, Covets and Crushes, we have our resolutions or intentions for the following year, which include spinning, weaving, and not buying as much yarn from the US, because oh God, the Canadian dollar right now you guys.

Hope everyone had a great holiday and has a wonderful 2016!

SPOILER ALERT!  Spoilers for Agents of SHIELD season 3 up to about episode 6 or 7 starting at 1:13:40  and ending at 1:21:55.

Sooooooooooooo, yeah.  Been a while.  But here’s a new (old?) episode!  And there’s a much more recent one coming in a day or two!  (It’s been crazy guys, seriously.)

Anyway, in this episode, Karen and Maggie are joined by the Illustrious Michelle to talk about their trip to Rhinebeck, where lots of yarn, geekery and food were had by all.  And good thing they have Rhinebeck to talk about, as Karen and Maggie were both working on swap stuff which they couldn’t really discuss at the time, which makes for a preeeety short discussion about what they’re knitting. Maggie did get some work done on designing the Bob Socks, though!  When Karen’s done the swap thing she has the Mulberry Scarf and the Honey Cowl to do for her mother and she has dreams of someday starting Lilli Pilli.  Of course what she really needs is a new hobby, so of course she acquired a sewing machine (and a nascent fabric stash).  Michelle is working on the Granite Ridge and Pont Neuf sweaters.

In Geek Squee, Karen saw The Martian and LOVED IT SO MUCH OMG BEST MOVIE EVER (Michelle saw it too and loved it!) and saw and enjoyed the new James Bond movie, Spectre.  And for even more squeeing, the trailers for Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them and Captain America: Civil War have come out!  They also discuss Agents of SHIELD up to that point in the season (Message from the future:  AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA *SOBS*),

In Cravings Covets and Crushes, you can’t sign up for the Indigodragonfly Geek Club anymore, but it’s in there because Karen did sign up and so there will be chatter about it later, and so you can keep an eye out on what this one is like, if they decide to run it again.  There’s also lots of geeky gift ideas that came out in the run up to the holidays, including ornaments (which might be on sale now!), geeky adult colouring books (including a few for Harry Potter and a Doctor Who and Sherlock one!), and some amazing geeky cookie cutters.

Episode 104: Counting is Apparently Not Our Strong Suit

Podcast cover
Read more

In this episode: can it be Rhinebeck already?  No seriously, we want it to be Rhinebeck already, especially as both Karen and Maggie are going for the entire weekend this year, yay!  We’ll also be at the Kitchener-Waterloo Knitters’ Fair on Sept.  so look for the K1G2 logo t-shirts and Karen’s Peggy Carter hat, and join us at 11:30 in the food area for a little meetup!

In Adventures in Knitting, Maggie is still working on the epic shawl for her mother, but the end is in sight!  Sadly, she’s going to need more yarn for that end.  Meanwhile she’s finished the Sacre du Printemps socks and is still working on Vivid blanket squares as well as doing some more spinning (and learning about fulling!).  Oh and someone’s been giving her a nudge to finish the Bob socks.  Not to mention sooper seekrit projects for the K1G2 swap, as well as, uh, acquiring a loom?  Karen meanwhile is at a bit of an impasse with her Urdr shawl, so she’s finished her candleflame-pattern socks, started working again on a pair of twisted-stitch cable socks that have been hibernating for a while, and has done a lot of thinking (but not knitting) on her Rhinebeck sweater.  Oh and she’s also planned exactly what she’s going to be knitting on the train to Rhinebeck: the Arbre shawl by Andrea Rangel.  (Side note, yes booze is available from the cafe car on Amtrak.  WOO!)

In Geek Squee, we got some news about the new seasons of Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter (with a little digression about why 40s film star Hedy Lamarr is awesome and deserves geek girl sainthood), but more importantly, the EPIC DUBSMASH WAR between the two shows is making our lives at the moment, and will be raising money for charity!  Also we got a new Deadpool trailer, and Tom Hiddleston is off the fantasy boyfriend market for Maggie, so she has a sad.  Also, Karen saw Ant-Man, and mostly enjoyed it, and finally saw a favourite movie on the big screen and LOVED it.  And of course Stephen Colbert couldn’t resist making Lord of the Rings references on Jon Stewart during Stewart’s final episode of the Daily Show.

In Cravings, Covets and Crushes, Maggie’s brother is cohosting a podcast called Packet Loss with some nerdy crossover that is super NSFW (but seriously, like we can talk), Karen’s started calling down the computer game hole thanks to the Game Grumps YouTube channel (especially their “Steam Train” series) and the Little Inferno game.  Also, Kim McBrien-Evans of Indigodragonfly has released a new sweater pattern called “Meander” which is gorgeous!

In this episode, Maggie has passed her black belt testing!  Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

In Adventures in Knitting, Maggie’s been pretty busy with said testing, but that didn’t stop her from starting a shawl designed especially for her, which will be a gift for someone, as well as working on a pair of Sacre du Printemps socks and more squares for the Vivid blanket.  Karen is working on the same two things she was working on last time: her Urdr shawl and her candleflame stitch pattern socks, but she’s got plans for a Lilli Pilli shawl when she gets a little closer to getting the shawl or the socks done.  And of course there’s always the Rhinebeck sweater to consider…

In Geek Squee, Karen has her reviews of Jurassic World (meh),  Inside Out (SO GOOD) and the book “The Martian” (OMG SO GOOOOD).  Also, the cover model for the First Fall Knitty issue was Neil freaking Gaiman (modelling a pattern from the upcoming Geek Knits book), Pluto is still a dwarf planet no matter how sorry you feel for it and a girl challenges her local library’s robotics program for boys and succeeds!

In Cravings, Covets and Crushes, we have the perfect drinking glasses for stargazing nights, we saw a SUPER CUTE Chibi Baby Groot toy, a gorgeous shawl called “Happy Street” which is perfect for stashbusting some of those sock yarns you know you have, and there are more female scientist Lego sets to vote on!

WE’RE DOING A SWAP!  See the Ravelry board for details!  Signups close Aug. 1st!
