If you've been vegan or sometime you know this all too well, and if you're new to lifestyle, get ready. We've mentioned a few myths before but I wanted to focus on a few that we don't always talk about (that means we're skipping the protein one). I'd love to hear your feedback! Veganism isn't About Perfection
How many times have you been called out by the "vegan police" for something outside of your control, rather it be unknowingly eating something with dairy or taking a medication after surgery? A recent post on Facebook stirred up some conversation about a young lady who needed dental work. She was avoiding necessary health care out of the fear of having animal products injected into her body. Though I can understand her concerns it's important to be sure you put the oxygen mask on yourself first. It's hard to be a voice for the voiceless when a tooth infection kills you. ----- No one has Perfection We all contribute in some way such as a bug hitting our windshield, unknowingly stepping on an ant, or a field mouse that dies while a farm harvests carrots. None of us are immune to some level of harm. However, making the decisions we can that align with the ethics of a plant based life style is all we can really ask for and expect. It's important to be kind to yourself and others when transitioning and making through choices such as getting health care. ----- Check out the store: https://goo.gl/Ytti1Y Support the show: https://goo.gl/O5w2R0 Grab a book with Audible: https://goo.gl/SzEZJO Start shopping at Thrive Market: https://goo.gl/D1YEyH

Your Stress is Their Stress
Show Notes: https://goo.gl/nNvLky Facebook: https://goo.gl/eWhvZp Twitter: https://goo.gl/8CnpWh ----- Contact us to be a guest or a guest host. Stress can do a surprising amount of damage to you physical and mental health. We tend to forget the amount of damage it can do to our friends and family. It's not possible to avoid stress completely but being able to recognize the signs and deal with stressors correctly can be a massive benefit to ourselves and those around us Symptoms headaches insomnia anxiety over eating / not eating social withdrawal chest pain fatigue feeling like you’re losing control How Stress Effects Us Physical increased risk of heart attack / high blood pressure Stress increases blood flow to muscles, constricts blood vessels, and increases heart rate. Constant stress to the heart in this manner can lead to heart attacks and stroke. Even in relatively healthy people. weakened immune system Stress hormones jump starts the immune system, good if you’re hurt but constant stimulation weakens your system leaving you open to illness missed periods / heavy or irregular cycle Can also magnify symptoms of menopause drug / alcohol abuse obesity mental increased chances of depression anger / irritation How Our Stress Affects Others Someone once told me, we take things out on those we love because we trust them. Unfortunately, that places your chronic stress on them putting them into the same cycle you’ve found yourself. It’s important to be self aware and listen to those around you. If they lash out back at you, it’s likely they are feeding off your stress. They may also ask why you’re acting or talking a certain way, this is a great trigger that you may need to dial it back and evaluate. There’s nothing wrong with saying you need a moment to think or calm down. We all have a mechanism in our brains that copycats those in our social circles. These are called “mirror neurons” and are used to help social circles empathize, bond, and learn. We see these in action when we yawn after another person or we mirror our work collages posture. This also goes for emotions. Steps to reduce Stress Start writing in a journal A journal can help you recognize stressors as well as help you naturally work out solutions Try to locate your triggers If you can, figure out what your common stressors are that you can control. If it’s you commute, maybe discuss flex time with your boss to avoid traffic or maybe telecommute a once or twice a week. If it your kids when you get home, work with a family member or spouse to watch your kids for a moment to decompress. You may not be able to address every stressor but you’ll be surprised what targeting only a few can do for your physical and mental health. The 4 A’s Avoid stress if you can by saying “no”, keep away from those who stress you out that you don’t have to interact with, take control over your environment such as the the TV or shopping in a less crowded store, reduce your todo list to the necessities. Alter your situation Express yourself to those that add to your stress by limiting conversation or letting them know they are adding to your stress. Most people will sympathize and be willing to help, compromise where possible, be mindful of your workload. Adapt Try to put a silver lining on problems such as bad traffic is a chance to listen to a new audiobook or podcast, look at the big picture / the long term odds are the problem won’t have as long of an effect as you think Accept things you can’t change Don’t try to control the uncontrollable sometimes it’s easier to prepare than fight the inevitable, learn to forgive those that caused stress or make mistakes holding on to something that’s causing stress to you but no the other person is just poisoning yourself. Talk to loved ones, vent. Find a person at work, at home, friend, or family that’s happy to just listen to you talk. They may be able to help with solutions. If you just want to vent without getting feedback, let them know. MOVE THAT BODY hit a heavy bag / excersize dance like an idiot go for a walk hike Do something out of the ordinary take a painting class lay in the grass and find pictures in clouds read drink some coffee or tea and do nothing Manage your time better by not over committing to things, making a list of priorities, white board your items at work or display them so other know you have a lot going on, break things into steps Meditation Take a break / breather ----- Check out the store: https://goo.gl/Ytti1Y Support the show: https://goo.gl/O5w2R0 Grab a book with Audible: https://goo.gl/SzEZJO Start shopping at Thrive Market: https://goo.gl/D1YEyH

Would A Jedi be Vegan?
This episode was sponsored by Audible. They have over 180,000 books to choose from that can be read on a wide range of devices. If you go to audibletrial.com/CuriouslyVegRadio you can sign up for a 30 day free trial. We got a little, well, a lot geek for episode four. The idea of doing episode four brought up thoughts of Star Wars which lead us to other fandoms such as Doctor Who, Star Trek, Game of Thrones, and more. We wanted to go through some of our favorite areas of pop culture geekdom and examine the philosophies and diets of different races and characters. We managed to jump around some (and got a bit deep in fandom) but we managed hit some interesting points along the way. Warning, things get weird... STAR WARS The topic that started this discussion is, "would a Jedi be vegan?" We fill that they would however, there are some holes we worked on filling. Our first set of evidence was the Jedi creed: Jedi are the guardians of peace in the galaxy. Jedi use their powers to defend and to protect. Jedi respect all life, in any form. Jedi serve others rather than ruling over them, for the good of the galaxy. Jedi seek to improve themselves through knowledge and training. We felt that the last three were great points about protecting all life. However, the area Dave got stuck on was since Jedi's view death as a part of life, does that mean they would consume something that died naturally and without suffering? Hope pondered if Ahsoka Tano would switch to a meat substitute even though her species was carnivores. Hope also questioned if the Jedi reaches a certain level, do they need to eat. However, David said that since the Sith are the "Jedi" of the dark side and Vader needs vitapaste for food then the Jedi must eat. However, we think the Sith would be meat eaters given they get their power from taking it from others. You can see some of this in the Sith creed. Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me. Dave proposed the question that if the Jedi were vegan and came across someone who wasn't would they intervene and "guide them"? Hope thought the Jedi would remain hands off and provided the logic behind it. Hope realized... now... after recording... that she called the Solo kids, Jaina Solo and Jacen Solo, the names of the Wonder Twins, Zan and Jayna. She has been scolded and frozen in carbonite for her betrayal. STAR TREK Hope mentioned that Liam Hemsworth went vegan, which turned our talk to Star Trek. There is an episode where Spock has to eat meat to survive and is disgusted with himself. To which David remarked that the concept of meat consumption and our biological makeup leads to an animal based diet to being "illogical". Also, we speculated that beings traveling the universe would have moved passed animals in their diet. However, what about a replicated turkey breast? We have this now with people working on "lab grown" meat that didn't require "mistreatment". Dave and Hope addressed this and talked about if we would consume a "lab grown" burger would we? (you'll need to listen to find out). SCIENCE Dave brought up the clips of Bill Nye and Richard Dawkins(1 | 2) and how they viewed a plant-based diet. This tends to frustrate us since they support it but don't make nor push the change. In addition to Bill and Richard Dave proposed that even the act of catch and release fishing is harmful as fish can still feel pain even though people still want to debate it: fish can feel pain: according to “pain in fish” wiki It has been concluded that bony fish possess nociceptors that are similar in function to those in mammals. The central nervous system (CNS) of fish contains a spinal cord, medulla oblongata, and the brain, divided into telencephalon, diencephalon, mesencephalon and cerebellum. In regards on how a plant-based diet affect the mind Hope pointed out a prison experiment that tested diet and how it affects repeat offenders. Our research found, "At the time Mooreland took over the facility, California had a recidivism rate of 95%. During the seven years Mooreland had the inmates at Victor Valley on a vegetarian diet the recidivism rate at the prison went down to under 2%." (source) FUTURAMA We talked about the poppler episode of Futurama where the crew found a tasty food on a planet and started selling it. Once they realized the "food" was alive and sentient they changed their tune and tried to save them. DOCTOR WHO Being big Doctor Who (2005) fans Hope and Dave gushed over their favorite doctors and discussed their possible dietary choices. In the episode "The Two Doctors" the doctor changed to a plant-based diet for his companion but that wasn't mentioned again. We talked about how the Doctor is able to talk to horses, babies, the space whale, and remembers "Jim the Fish" with River. Because of this we suspect he may be vegetarian/vegan. However, Hope points out that the Doctor did eat fish fingers and custard but Dave contests that he was mid regeneration and was out of sorts. GAME OF THRONES There was a brief mention that Peter Dinklage follows a plant-based diet and is an avid spokesman for animal rights. Any food he eats on Game of Thrones is made from tofu or seitan. COMICS Hope mentioned that Beast Boy went vegetarian/vegan because he was able to turn into those animals and knew that they were able to feel pain and other emotions. According to the Teen Titans Wiki: "Having transformed into most of the meat-producing animals, Beast Boy has lost his taste for meat and is now a vegetarian, which often gets him arguing with the others (especially Cyborg) because he constantly attempts to have the others adopt his culinary taste as well." Mark Waid, in "Birthright", made Superman vegetarian when he gain the power to see the pain of animals. However, this was quickly reversed by DC. Hope, thought that Wonder Woman would be plant-based since she sees all life a sacred. Dave, in attempt to get slammed with hate mail, pointed out that he thinks comics tend to cling to the meat eating idea since it's seen as manly and comics tend to market heavily to the male demographic. GENERAL A few off topic items came up where We discussed how we aren't part of the food chain but rather removed from it. In addition, humans have caused animal extinction faster than they would have naturally. We took some time while talking about Neil Gaiman about his comments on honey and our views on the subject. FOLLOW UP What do you guys think? Would the Jedi or the Doctor be vegan? Know any plant-based superheros we didn't mention? Let us know on Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr.

Handling Unexpected Moments
Show Notes: https://goo.gl/kSp0xc Facebook: https://goo.gl/uoQRtL Twitter: https://goo.gl/8CnpWh ----- I spent the new year's at my parents house this year. As I grazed on some buffalo cauliflower, red pepper hummus, and the guacamole I brought I glanced that the television from time to time. My parents always have the "rockin' new year's eve" on so the night was full mostly of pop singers. Near midnight I caught a glimpse of Mariah Carey performing. I noticed she was lip syncing but that's not what caught me off guard. It was obvious she was having technical issue. Even more obvious, she wasn't taking the malfunctions very well. She was visually shaken, frustrated, and action out toward the staff. The next day the internet was abuzz about this performance I saw another video, this one of Adele. In this video, all the audio caught out on her mid song. For a split second she was taken off guard, as we all would be, but she quickly snapped back into her song (with some audience participation) and let the professionals running the show do their jobs. The sound quickly came back before the song was complete. Aside from the lack of audio, you would never know things were awry. I found it interesting how to professionals in their field not only reacting to an unexpected moment but how the openly treated the staff there to assist with problem and ensure a smooth performance. This lead me to ask how I handle these moments. UNEXPECTED MOMENTS Liz Quick my friend and coworker at Mercy For Animals joined me as a guest host. We have very different jobs and responsibilities but both are ripe with unexpected moments. She was gracious enough to sit with me and chat about how she handles life distractions and what we can learn from Mariah's and Adele's attitudes. Remember guys: Feelings are just temporary visitors. Howard Jacobson and Josh LaJaunie: Obesity Autopsy
While you're at it, support the show, grab a book with Audible, or start shopping at Thrive Market. Recently the BBC televised the autopsy of an obese woman called Obesity - The Post Mortem. Hope became aware of the obesity autopsy after reading an article claiming it to be fat shaming. Of course we had to take an opportunity to locate and view the autopsy to see how the show presented the data and how the issue of obesity was addressed. We were pleased to see that rather than shaming the person they provided evidence regarding excessive weight gain and internal organs. It was appalling to see how her weight affected nearly all of her organs including her liver and lungs. Dr. Howard Jacobson, who we've had on the show before, and Josh LaJaunie, formerly obese man turned ultra marathon runner, were gracious enough to chat with us about the obesity autopsy. They also discussed taking the steps and overcoming obstacles to get over our own physical hold ups and start hitting the pavement again. Everyone Can Be an Activist
Show Notes: https://goo.gl/kSp0xc Facebook: https://goo.gl/uoQRtL Twitter: https://goo.gl/8CnpWh ----- After a long week in Los Angeles ten a week to recover and regroup we're back in action! I drug the recording gear with me all the way across the country (by plan, don't be crazy) and managed to get Liz back on the mic with me in person to discuss what activism is and how we can do it. BEING AN ACTIVIST Anything you do to promote the movement to being plant based for the planet, your health, or the animals is an act of activism. For some it's sharing recipes and for others it's leafleting a college campus or being an investigator for an animal rights organization. The important that is to find what's fits you, your temperament, and makes the impact on others you want to me. Liz and I dig into how each of us (and you) do a lot by doing a little. Your hosts at Curiously Veg Radio got a chance to talk with Dr. Garth Davis about his ground-breaking new book, Proteinaholic: How Our Obsession With Meat Is Killing Us And What We Can Do About It. We spoke about the role nutrition plays in a healthy lifestyle, evaluating research, and his own experience with changing his perspective on health and weight loss. Why in the heck do we focus so much on protein? Won’t I get a protein deficiency if I don’t eat meat? What about gains tho? Shouldn’t we buy foods that contains lots of protein? It’s carbs that make us fat, right? Butter is healthy because Time Magazine said so, and aren’t they experts? We have all asked these questions when deciding how to eat to be healthy and build muscle. It’s confusing and there seems to be a new study or article out everyday that tells us what is the best way to eat, so how in the world can someone tell what is correct and what is profit-driven sensationalism? You can start with Dr. Davis, because he will open your eyes to what’s really going on and gives key advice on what is a healthy lifestyle. In his book, Dr. Davis takes you on his personal journey of the physician becoming the patient - physician heal thyself if you will. He compiles all he learned, research, and findings in a guide that illustrates why we are sick and becoming fatter every year. It is an easy to understand synopsis of what is really going on with our health and how we can take control back. The bonus material offered on Proteinaholic.com is a valuable resource for starting a healthy lifestyle. Both your hosts wishes that the guides and recipes had been around when they started their plant-based journey! Dr. Davis said it best with “For doctors to fail to inform patients of the gentlest, safest, most beneficial action they can take to protect their own health is nothing more than criminal negligence.” So, hunker down and get ready for an awesome interview! Dr. Garth Davis is a fully recovered proteinaholic, Ironman, currently the medical director of the Davis Clinic at the Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas, and starred on the hit TLC show Big Medicine.Tid Bits:Hope wanted to clarify ketosis because she felt that she didn’t explain it well enough. Ketones are substances that are made when the body breaks down fat for energy when there isn’t adequate carbohydrates available to equip the body with glucose for energy or if your body can't use glucose (or blood sugar) properly. The body becomes acidic (acidosis) which promotes inflammation. Yes, you will lose weight initially, but it is not sustainable and can cause serious health issues. Integrative practitioners are physicians that have receive additional education in nutrition, fitness, and natural medicine. Show Notes: https://goo.gl/kSp0xc Facebook: https://goo.gl/uoQRtL Twitter: https://goo.gl/8CnpWh ----- The time of year approaches where we sit down and write out what our hopes for the new year will be.
