#61 Cate Luzio (Luminary) on Building Resilience Through Purpose

Plucking Up with Liz Bohannon

Who sold us the lie that building a life of purpose and passion is a linear path? Because y’all, building stuff is not for the faint of heart! In this episode, we speak with Cate Luzio, a business leader who spent the last 20 years in banking before launching her own company … right before a global pandemic. Cate is the founder and CEO of Luminary, a community that supports women in building professional networks and business allies. Cate walks through what it meant to leave a successful and lucrative career to self-fund her start-up, only to face a COVID shutdown 14-months after opening. On the show, she also talks about how purpose bred her own resilience and the community she’s held onto in her toughest moments. Learn more about Luminary at weareluminary.com. -- Love the podcast? Advancing Your Career with Cate Luzio of Luminary

Fierce Lab

Encore release from 2020.  Cate Luzio spent over 15 years in corporate banking and during that time she observed a lot of women's careers stalling - not from a lack of desire to advance but from a lack of knowledge and resources to help them advance.  As Cate learned to navigate networking, new skill development and speaking up for opportunities, others - both men and women - took notice and sought out her guidance.  Before long Cate realized she had a desire to do more; to share what she knew with more women across many industries, not just banking.  Enter her launch of Luminary, a collaboration hub for women-identified who are passionate about professional development and expanding their networks.  Just over a year in and Luminary has recruited the support of major businesses including Unilever, WW (formally Weight Watchers), JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs, to name a few. In late February of 2020 I sat down with Cate in her New York location to chat all things women and career advancement.  Some questions we tackled for this episode include: What are the building blocks for advancement? How can women help one another succeed? Why is it imperative women get comfortable raising their hand for new opportunities, even if they don't have the experience? And my personal favorite, why must women start talking openly about money? In mid March of 2020, with the outbreak of COVID-19, Cate was forced to pivot Luminary to a fully virtual/digital hub.  She and her team took the challenge head on and have excelled.  If you're a woman looking for resources to help you grow your career, this podcast points you in the right direction. Walk it Off: Resilience and Risk-Taking with Cate Luzio of Luminary

Superwomen with Rebecca Minkoff

If years in investment banking taught Cate Luzio anything, it’s that big risks equal big rewards. Cate entered the world of finance without any formal training in the subject, and rose to lead thousands of employees in multibillion dollar ventures worldwide. Despite a fantastically successful career, Cate couldn’t picture herself in finance for the rest of her life. Her desire to make a meaningful impact led Cate instead to form Luminary, a membership-based career and personal growth platform and collaboration hub created to address the systemic challenges impacting women across all industries and sectors. At Luminary, those who are women, women-identifying and allies are invited to create a seat, pull up a chair and support one another in changing careers, starting something new, or advancing on their current trajectory. With a special emphasis on supporting caregivers, women 50+ and people of color, Luminary aims to put more women in the workforce in positions that cultivate happiness, fulfillment and success. Thanks for listening!  Don't forget to order Rebecca's new book, Fearless: The New Rules for Unlocking Creativity, Courage, and Success. Follow Superwomen on Instagram.
