Be You Parenting with Mary Dravis-Parrish When we are born, we are our own form of perfection. We are not prone to judge others, do bad things or need to prove our existence. Along the way, we receive an after-market add-on, an inner critic that can get out of control and become our inner terrorist. How many times have you heard your inner critic tell you all the things that you don’t do right? How often do you feel that you are constantly under attack? Being a parent is just one more role that your inner critic can barrage you with disabling thoughts and ideas. Don’t think for a second that you kids do not become affected in one way or another by your reaction to your inner critic. Our guest for this show, Aideen Finnola, knows the plight of living under the rule of the inner critic/terrorist and will share with us steps to effectively identify and remove the inner terrorist within. Aideen T. Finnola is an empowerment coach, author, speaker, and radio show host, In Pursuit of Truth on Inspired Choices Network. She is an unapologetic and empowered survivor of and thriver after physical, emotional, psychological, and religious abuse. As she was raised in a religious cult for the first two decades of her life and was then unsuspectingly married to a closeted gay man for her life’s next two decades, she has a lot of experience with varying degrees and expressions of untruth. These experiences have fueled her pursuit of truth to the point of a full-on passion (some might say obsession). Aideen has learned that above all, untruth is both unworkable and painful. Coming from the perspective that life, time and space, and the human experience are all perfect and good, she knows that truth can only exist within ideas and experiences that are both workable and enjoyable. Aideen coaches her clients to find their own truth by investigating outside the conventional parameters of “should and shouldn’t,” “good and bad,” and “right and wrong.” She guides them instead to evaluate their experiences by questioning “Is this working for me?” and “Am I enjoying this?” Aideen empowers people all over the world through her coaching, her memoir, My Exquisite Purple Life, her speaking, and her radio show. 372: Making a Bold Escape – Cults and Mixed Orientation Marriage – Aideen Finnola

In today’s episode, Aideen discusses how growing up in an extreme Christian cult primed her for marrying a closeted gay man. The intersection of that religious prohibition against homosexuality and her own lack of education and experience with men (as dictated by the purity standards of the community), understandably resulted in her own mixed orientation marriage, which fell apart after years of abuse, gaslighting and denial. In Aideen’s own words: “My religious background set me up for the straight spouse experience. I joke that I was so clueless about gay men that I wouldn’t have known a gay man if he stood at the altar with me. There were loads of gay men and women in the cult, and 100% of them were closeted, because it was a sin, and it was supposed to be wrong. And then you add to that all of the heterosexual people are so sexually repressed and have such severe restrictions on their own sexual development and sexual expression, and you take those two things together and you are guaranteed to have mixed orientation marriages.”
