What does it mean to be Black? with Tavis Smiley - Ep 3

Uniting America with John Wood Jr.

Tavis Smiley is one of the most prominent journalists in America, and one of the most accomplished African-American journalists and commentators there has ever been. Smiley was the first African-American to host national shows on NPR as well as PBS. For years, he was the host of BET tonight, the winner of many NAACP Image Awards, and more recently he launched KBLA in Los Angeles, the only black owned political talk radio network west of the Mississippi River. This was a sweeping conversation about what it is to be black in America that sees me and Tavis trading perspectives on many things including black conservatism and black liberalism, racial assimilation and black identity, race versus class, the work of William Julius Wilson, Bob Woodson and more. But while we agree and disagree on many points, Tavis and I stand firmly united on the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and the need for leaders, White and Black, in America today to hew to his example, to have an eye deep on the teachings of King while trading quotes back and forth from the likes of Maya Angelou and Albert Murray, looking at his disagreements with sparring partners like Larry Elder, John McWhorter, and more.In an era where what it means to be a black American often finds itself reduced to simple tropes, I'd like to think that Tavis and I succeed in unearthing some of the complexity and diversity within the black experience. There is no one way to be black just as there is no one way to be an American. The conversation is a rich one.Podcast episodes drop every Thursday, 4 PM PT I 7 PM ETSubscribe onApple Podcasts – https://apple.co/3Du7ZONSpotify – https://spoti.fi/3DM9SaOGoogle Podcast – https://bit.ly/3GVUjOiStitcher – https://bit.ly/3SSlHk8Pandora – https://bit.ly/3DnCQMNi-Heart Radio – https://bit.ly/3DOnuCdAmazon & Audible – https://amzn.to/3DOv7snRSS Feed – https://feeds.megaphone.fm/unitingamericawithjohnwoodjrFollow John Wood Jr. onTwitter - https://bit.ly/3X9gwPnYouTube - https://bit.ly/3vzkF3gFacebook - https://bit.ly/3QdWgJTInstagram - https://bit.ly/3vDPG66Website - https://bit.ly/3Gcf3AEFollow Tavis Smiley onTwitter -    https://bit.ly/3kBMLIK (@TavisSmiley)Website -   https://kbla1580.com#UnitingAmericaPodcast #JohnWoodJr #braverangels #america #politics #Leadership #AmericanPolitics #podcast #polarization #depolarization #democrats #liberal #trump #persuasion #TavisSmiley #BlackIdentity #BlackCulture #Race #Class #MLK #BlackCommunities
