Cancer Straight Talk from MSK
Every year, tens of thousands of people across the country hop on stationary bikes to raise money for rare cancer research through Cycle for Survival, MSK’s largest fundraising event of the year. With the help of founding partner Equinox, Cycle for Survival has raised nearly $300 million since 2007. But how does pedaling raise money? And who is that money helping? In this episode, Dr. Diane Reidy-Lagunes sits down with the cofounder of Cycle for Survival Dave Linn, as well as rare cancer survivor and one of the movement’s biggest cheerleaders (and actual winner of TV’s Survivor: Africa), Ethan Zohn, to hear about their personal cancer stories and the power of Cycle for Survival. Right Place, Right Now
Today’s guest is a former professional soccer player, the winner of season 3 Survivor Africa, and an entrepreneur. Ethan Zohn played goalkeeper for the Highlanders F.C. as part of the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League. Being a professional athlete in Africa came with many new experiences that would prove important in his post-soccer life. Upon retiring, He was looking for his next adventure, so he applied for the hit reality TV show, Survivor. Ethan was selected to participate in season 3: Survivor Africa. While recording the show in Kenya, Ethan won a challenge that earned him a day away from the competition. During his sightseeing, Ethan stumbled across a hospital that had dozens of kids hanging out in the parking lot. True to form, Ethan started an impromptu soccer game. While playing with the kids, Ethan was confused. Why would here be so many children hanging out in the parking lot of a hospital? The answer would lead Ethan to his next purpose. Every child in the parking lot was there, because they were HIV or AIDS positive. This would turn out to be the pinnacle moment for Ethan. He realized he needed to do something. Understanding the impact of soccer on local communities, Ethan leveraged his influence, took his $1million winnings, and founded the non-profit Grassroots Soccer. Today Grassroots Soccer promotes HIV and AIDS prevention education to Africa's youth, through soccer. Ethan is an amazing human doing amazing things in the world. Enjoy the episode. In this episode Ethan discusses Stop trying to find your purpose through what gives you joy and focus on what moves you emotionally. Even if it's negative emotion. How to leverage your platform to do something important. Immerse yourself into the cause before you start your non-profit. Make sure this is what you want to do with your time. In this episode, I sat down with Ethan Zohn, who is is known by many for winning survivor Africa, but is also someone who, among a wide variety of endeavors, played professional soccer, is a global humanitarian, cancer survivor and advocate, television host, and co-founder of Grassroot Soccer. Join us for an incredibly varied conversation that is full of important lessons and takeaways for us as we navigate our daily lives. Key Takeaways1) Learn from FailureWe are all going to have successes and failures in life and some of these failures you can’t control, but you can control how you react to them. “Don’t worry about failing, worry about all of the things you could miss if you don’t even try.”2) Set "micro-goals"There is power in creating goals that you know are attainable because the feeling of accomplishing something is motivational and positive to our mental health. 3) The truth is powerfulBuild a network of people who you trust and that who you can talk to truthfully and openly. A lot of the times, the thoughts and feelings that someone going through a challenge are having are the same ones that the people supporting them are having, but if you don’t talk about it, you may never know.
