717: Rachel Nielson: Navigating the Evolving Ethics of Adoption

The Shameless Mom Academy

Rachel Nielson is the host of the popular parenting podcast, 3 in 30 Takeaways for Moms. Each 30-minute episode gives 3 actionable takeaways to help women find more meaning in their unique motherhood experiences. Rachel lives in the mountains of Idaho with her husband and her two miracle children who arrived to their family through adoption and IVF. As a former high school English teacher, she loves to read, write, and talk about deep ideas...which has made podcasting a perfect career for her to do from home.Rachel and I first connected as podcasters who shared side-by-side rankings in Apple Podcasts Kids & Family top charts. Some may have suggested we were competitors, but we immediately saw one another's work as complementary. When we had the opportunity to meet in person in 2020, we were able to see that as colleagues, friends, and confidants in this industry we could lean on each other and build a really special relationship that could support us as women, moms, and podcasters. I so treasure my sweet friendship with Rachel.  We have spoken about guesting on each other’s shows for years. To be honest, the challenge has been narrowing down what to talk about because we could talk to each other for days about so many things related to motherhood. But, I asked Rachel if she would be willing to talk about something deeply personal and special today - the adoption of her precious son, Noah.Listen in to hear Rachel share: Her family's journey into open adoption How she honored and did her best to center her son’s birth mother, Katie, throughout the process of adoption The unfathomable grief she held for Katie the day Noah was born The trauma of adoption for adopted children, no matter how healthy relationships they have with bio parents and adoptive parents How she and her husband navigated building and maintaining positive and healthy relationships with Noah’s bio parents, Katie and Drew How Katie’s death by suicide shifted Rachel’s perspective on the ethics of adoption What her family’s relationship with Drew looks like - how he is so significant and special in Noah’s life What she wants prospective adoptive parents to consider before going through the adoption process Links mentioned: Register for my 2023 Plan & Prep Pajama Party: shamelessmom.com/pajamaparty Connect with Rachel: 3in30podcast.com Rachel’s Podcast: 3 in 30 Takeaways for Moms Get Rache’s Course, 5 Days to More Meaning in Your Motherhood: 3in30podcast.com/sma Rachel on Instagram Thank you to our sponsors this month:Full Time VA: Check out this free training on how to be a virtual assistant that makes full-time income with part-time hours: thefulltimeva.com/Shameless.  Owner Amanda Rush Holmes is also including a bonus free guide for SMA listeners -  The VA Kickstarter Workbook!Ritual: Ritual’s Essential for Women 18+ is a multivitamin you can actually trust. 333: Examining the Voice that Fuels You: A Reveal on Shame, an Eating Disorder, a Diagnosis, and Not Fixing Others | with Rachel Nielson of 3 in 30 Podcast

Dawnbreakers by The LifeBeats Project

Friends I am so honored to reshare a favorite story from the LifeBeats Library. Dawnbreaker Rachel Nielson is the host of 3 in 30 podcast, a podcast for moms to give them 3 solid takeaways in 30 minutes.  Rachel shares her battle for having control in her life that lead to a decade long eating disorder emerging from dealing with the health decline and death of her mother at a young age to her battle with infertility.  She goes from one extreme of excessive running and starvation to lying to her husband to sneak away to eating multiple drive-thrus.  After fighting long and hard to bring children into her family, upon the arrival of her child she came to the realization that she was done treating herself like that and no longer wanted any hidden shame.  Rachel provides a fascinating insight into her own mind during that period of battling with her eating disorder as she moves through narrative therapy by personifying and giving a voice to it.  So compelling to hear how poorly we treat ourselves and helps us to identify and rid ourselves of any similar thoughts.Rachel shares how counseling and living true to who she actually was through living out her desires and passions helped turn around her negative thinking and need for control.Rachel then shares the next part of her chapter that she has never shared before, how she fears for a tailspin back into her eating disorder, how it has been placing a strain on her marriage, what she hopes will come from sharing it, and how we can support her.   In the spirit of sharing, I also reveal something about my divorce I have not since spoken of.Listen and be inspired to remove shame in your life by bringing things to the light, realize we don’t have to have the perfect plan to start making changes, and to support others by not trying to fix them but by loving them.Show Notes:Rachel’s podcast 3 in 30Rachel’s Instagram feed Rachel’s article “The Surprising Way I Confronted My Eating Disorder”Rachel’s podcast in which she read the narrative

How much does our community impact the choices we make? How do we find our path when it’s conflicting with our perceived expectations? Rachel Nielson talks about how her upbringing and Mormon religion impacted her path as a mom -- she was expected to be a stay-at-home mom but it didn’t feel right to her. She challenged the expectations of her culture -- and loves her career & life now (which also is earning her good money!). Then clinical psychologist Dr Lisa Damour has advice on how to handle change with your partner - husband or spouse or whomever - and if you’re worried you’re making the wrong choice being a stay-at-home mom or being a working mom - Dr Lisa has some very encouraging research she’ll reveal!  In our Real Mom Moment Digital Creator Nicki Marie hilariously tells us what parenthood means to her - it involves her child’s storytelling which is of questionable truth. **What did you think of the show?
