199. Susan Fowler with Carolyn Adolph: Fighting Sexual Harassment in Silicon Valley

Town Hall Seattle Civics Series

In 2017, twenty-five-year-old Susan Fowler came forward to discuss the sexual harassment and retaliation she’d experienced as an entry-level engineer at Uber. Her story went viral, leading to the ousting of Uber’s CEO and contributing to a wave of vigilance against sexual harassment that has been cited as a critical factor in the movements against figures such as Harvey Weinsten. Fowler made her way to Town Hall with excerpts from her memoir Whistleblower: My Journey To Silicon Valley And Fight For Justice At Uber, chronicling her stand against the pervasive culture of sexism, harassment, racism, and abuse at Uber. In conversation with KUOW’s Carolyn Adolph, Fowler revealed how, when was told that she was the problem, she banded together with other women to try to make change. When that didn’t work, she went public. She could never have anticipated what would follow: that she would be investigated, followed, and harassed; that her words would change much more than Uber; or that they would set her on a course toward finally achieving her dreams. Join Fowler and Adolph as they explored Fowler’s unbelievable true story of her experiences facing down one of the most valuable startups in Silicon Valley history—and the fallout that arose from her stand against inequality. Susan Fowler is an editor at the New York Times who edits the “Op-Eds from the Future” series. Previously she worked at Stripe as the founding editor in chief of Increment, and was one of the “Silence Breakers” named Person of the Year by TIME. Carolyn Adolph is a reporter for KUOW who covers Seattle’s growth by looking at the city’s major companies. She’s also a co-host of KUOW’s Prime(d) podcast. Presented by Town Hall Seattle. Recorded live in The Great Hall on February 25, 2020.

Uber Whistleblower Susan Fowler

Commonwealth Club of California Podcast

Revelations about misconduct at the biggest startups and tech companies seem to saturate today’s news cycle—but it wasn’t always this way. In 2017, when penning her now famous 2,900-word blog post about the pervasive culture of sexual harassment at Uber, soon-to-be whistleblower Susan Fowler was stepping into uncharted territory. Her decision to share a blog post about her “very, very strange year at Uber” with the public would open the floodgates for women to share similar experiences of systematic sexual harassment in Silicon Valley and beyond. Fowler’s open letter not only led to the CEO’s ouster but it also caused a complete disruption of the status quo of workplaces, culminating in mass movements for women’s empowerment launched worldwide. In her new memoir, Whistleblower: My Journey to Silicon Valley and Fight for Justice at Uber, Fowler details how this courageous act was entirely consistent with her life so far—a life characterized by extraordinary determination, a refusal to accept things as they are, and the desire to do what is good and right. Since taking her leave from Uber, Fowler, along with other “silence breakers,” was named Time’s 2017 Person of the Year and in 2018 was brought on as an opinion editor at The New York Times. Come with your questions and join Susan Fowler as she visits INFORUM to share her riveting story about breaking the silence and speaking truth to power. Learn more about your ad choices.
