Seattle Seahawk to Lifechanging Educator | Coach Robert Morrison

Being the first at something and somewhere is never easy. However, it can absolutely prepare you for a life of independence like nothing else. Personally, I always thought being the oldest prepared me in ways to face the world. There was no one else to blame and you had to pave the way…every…single…time. But being an only child AND the first at almost EVERYTHING, well that’s just extraordinary!

Coach Robert Morrison is exactly the independent and strong man you would expect him to be. His life has been anything but simple and ordinary. His story is filled with playing in the NFL to coaching high school students to earning 2 different Master degrees in Education. In his professional career as a teacher and administrator he walked on EACH campus as the FIRST black educator. At EACH of the 7 campuses! He truly changed the education culture in the state of Texas. His reputation is like that of a movie. This incredible man has positively influenced the lives of over 50,000 students and their families. You won’t want to stop listening to his stories…and you are going to need a Kleenex. I cry for the first time while recording. He is a life changer.

Two words to describe this fascinating story: SURPRISE ME!

Robert Morrison, “Translating Shared Economies of Knowledge in the Renaissance”

Play
Read more
Traditionally, accounts of the scientific advances of the Renaissance have focused on the contributions of famous individuals like Copernicus whose theories about heavenly bodies radically altered how we understood the arrangement of the universe and our place in it. Increasingly, though, historians have noted striking parallels between the work of figures like Copernicus and their contemporaries in the Islamic world though they’ve not been able to fully explain how these similarities arose. NHC Fellow Robert Morrison, professor of religion at Bowdoin College, has been working to trace the connections between these thinkers.

In this podcast, Morrison talks about his work to uncover the ways that scientific knowledge moved across continents and between cultures during this fertile time in Mediterranean intellectual life as Jewish, Muslim, and Christian merchants crossed paths, encountering and translating each other’s ideas about astrology, medicine, law, and astronomy forming coupling the exchange of goods with an economy of knowledge.

Holly Springs High School has a new Principal this year, Mr. Robert Morrison. I sat down in his office (I may or may not have had flashbacks to being sent to the Principal's office) recently and chatted with him to ask him some specific questions and just get to know his philosophy a little better.

I really liked him AND his philosophy on his students, and I think you will, too.

This conference uses the particular case study of astrology as a means to study the broader implications of boundary-work. It examines the intersections among science, the occult, and the religious cultures that lived in the medieval Islamic world—including Islam, Judaism, Christianity, and Zoroastrianism. The conference hopes to complicate the categories of magic, science, and religion by looking at how boundaries between these fields were articulated by medieval scholars. Boundary-work, by its very nature, is interdisciplinary; the conference will bring together scholars of religious studies, history, sociology, art, and science studies to collectively examine the chosen case study of astrology. By looking at practices of, categorizations of, and debates surrounding astrology in the medieval Islamic world, the conference hopes to shed light on the broader questions of when, where, why, and how definitions and boundaries are established between science, magic, and religion.
