Raising Digital Natives with Dr. Devorah Heitner

Let's K12 Better

Technology is a tool for innovation,  a medium for self-expression, and an opportunity for us to push the boundary of what we know. Technology and the internet hold the potential to be leveraged for immense good, as well as, extreme ill intent. Often parents and educators are worried about the ways in which young people will use technology negatively. Instead, we should model positive tech habits for our kids, discuss our expectations for them when they're online, and get a lot more curious and excited about kids' lived experiences with technology. How do we respect our kids’ privacy and digital footprint? How can parents become more aware of the challenges kids face while growing up in the digital era? How do we prepare kids to have the skills, awareness, and empathy they need to thrive in a digital world? In this episode, we sat down with digital parenting guru, Dr. Devorah Heitner, author of Screenwise: Helping Kids Thrive (and Survive) in Their Digital World and the founder of Raising Digital Natives. Our favorite takeaway from this episode... remember that there's a person on the other side of the screen receiving your communications. Finding that balance is difficult enough for adults in this “new normal,” and we have to think about kids as well. As someone who has done a lot of research in this area, Devorah can provide great insights and tips, so you won’t want to miss this episode. Depth and Light

How much screen time should my child have? Should my students have? How do we know what’s safe and what isn’t on the internet?  Dr. Devorah Heitner is an educator and researcher who explores these questions and many more. As founder of Raising Digital Natives, she advises schools, parents, and organizations on how best to mentor children and adolescents as they navigate an increasingly complex computational world. Devorah Heitner- Screen Time Confinement or Liberation- Growing Up with Digital Media, Porn, and Video Games

Dear Family,

Devorah Heitner is not just another mom concerned about raising a digital native. She uses her Ph.D. in Technology to research, teach, write, and lecture about how families everyday lives are affected by digital media, smartphones, and video games. She’s the author of Screenwise: Helping Kids Thrive (and Survive) in Their Digital World. And her work has appeared in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and TIME magazine. Devorah did a great TEDx talk about cultivating a culture of empathy and social/emotional literacy around kids and technology. She recently wrote a fantastic article for the Washington Post about how a smartphone would’ve saved her mother who had learning disabilities. Anytime parents find out her line of work, she gets cornered because every parent is anxious about their kids' multi-tasking, their social skills, them taking and receiving naughty pictures, cyberbullying, and well…the list can go on. But Devorah paints a brighter picture. She’s a media historian here today to let us know our concerns over digital media are a normal cycle of historical anxiety, and although we need to be cautious about the technology, we also need to celebrate the freedom the technology allows us and our families.   Show Note Links: Raising Digital Natives Devorah Heitner's book, "Screenwise" Devorah Heitner's "Washington Post" article- "My Mother Struggled with Learning Disabilities.
