220 : Founder Friday! w/ Sarah Barnett Gill of Mama Mocha's in Auburn , AL

This Founder Friday is a wild, unique, and refreshingly honest experience. Today we are going to be talking with the one and only  Sarah Barnett Gill, the owner of Mama Mocha's in Auburn, AL. Sarah has been in coffee since 2003 and for the last 7+ years has been operating one of the most unique, authentic, and welcoming coffee shops around. Mama Mocha's is a beacon of diversity, love, and simple honest enjoyment of people and coffee. In the pursuit of this Sarah has worked hard to grow her business from a small roastery in a $200/mo room of a bookstore to an established community icon of great coffee and charming hospitality that wins peoples hearts and taste buds.

This conversation covers a wide range of topics from the expected to the quit un-expected. Sarah is not afraid to take bold stands and is equal parts serious business woman, and fun loving protector of the marginalized. Plus, like me, she loves a good dark roasted coffee.

So, buckle up, this is going to be a refreshing and wild ride.

You will lean about:

  • Starting small and building slowly
  • Facing initial challenges
  • Rejecting the 3rd wave
  • Taking bold stances
  • Diversity and Inclusivity
  • Fighting cultural ignorance
  • The balance between love and ass kicking
  • Establishing a Unique Culture
  • Dark roast revival
  • Dealing with COVID and caring for your people

The executive who oversees AMC, BBC America, SundanceTV and IFC discussed the tangible and intangible benefits that come from fielding a sleeper hit like BBC America's "Killing Eve." The AMC Networks entertainment president also discusses the company’s use of "forensic" audience tracking data to better understand how to make the most of its programming across its linear and digital platforms. Barnett says her goal after being promoted in November to the group-level role is to keep AMC Networks "punching above its weight" as a purveyor of high-end content.

Have you ever had the itch to travel? Well today’s guest takes that itch to new extremes! Having traveled to 24 countries, saying that Sarah Barnett likes to travel is an understatement. All this travel creates incredible, unique and downright entertaining experiences. Sarah shares an unbelievable story about singing in China that is a must listen.
What’s exciting through is she uses her global travels to connect with artisans in emerging markets. She goes farther than just connecting. She actually brings their products back to the US to share with customers here through her company International Blessings. Now we can enjoy stunningly crafted jewelry, ornaments, bags, shoes and more.
Sarah and I actually met at Christy Wright’s Business Boutique in November of 2015. This phenomenal event brought together women across the United States to help empower each other in business. I’ve actually had the pleasure of interviewing several attendees, including Christy Wright. I so cherish the opportunity to have met Sarah and get to hear first hand her passion and dedication to International Blessings.
Note – we decided not to share the video from China to ensure the safety of those involved.

Mantra
