From the beginning she mind-jujitsu-ed us on the concept of death and roaches! This lady is amazing and has an origin story worthy of a Marvel Comic. This conversation is both deep thought-provoking and light-hearted. Our deaths are in the future but remarkably this turned out to be a conversation about the present. Please come get your life with us and Alua on the Unconvenient Truth. If you want more of Alua try her death mediation at the included link. Aliza Kelly speaks with Alua Arthur (Gemini Sun, Gemini Rising, Pisces Moon), death doula and founder of Going with Grace. In this episode, the two discuss the mystery of the death, and why so many Americans are afraid to die. They explore ways to confront death and address illness, suffering, and grief through the lens of the pandemic, which sheds light on what it’s like to live in a privileged body. This episode invites us to embrace our own death whole-heartedly and reflect upon the ways in which different communities, especially the Black community, experience death on a daily basis.

We’ve all heard of birthing dula’s; professionals who assist women who reject the dogma of conventional medicine and birth their children at home during a ceremony.

Well Death Dula’s are at the opposite end of the spectrum; they prepare the terminally ill and their families for the inevitable. And their goal is to provide a safe space for patients and their families to feel as comfortable about the process of transition as possible.

Death is unavoidable; it happens to the best of us.

On today’s episode we introduce you to Alua Arthur: attorney and CEO of Going With Grace, an organization that practices and trains people to become Death Dula’s.

“Bringing awareness to Death and Dying.” That’s the goal of Going With Grace. So sit back and listen but you may want to grab a box of tissues with your glass of wine, folks.

Colorful death doula Alua Arthur is helping people die better. She founded Going with Grace to educate and hold space for people facing their own deaths... or the death of someone they love. Today, we're talking about what we can learn about our own end-of-life by watching others experience death, what happens when we don't agree with the way someone has chosen to die, and the myriad of ways we can all bring more grace to the room when someone is dying. Also this week, I'm talking about WHY having permission to grieve is so important and sharing an excerpt from my new book Permission to Grieve.

Let's normalize death: How death inspires life with Death Doula Alua Arthur

After the death of my favorite uncle, I wondered: Why don’t we talk about death? Why do we run away from it? And how can we prepare for it in a more conscious and intentional way?

My guest today Alua Arthur, has some answers, answers I know you will find helpful.

A death doula, attorney and the founder of going with grace, end of life planning organization that exists to support people as they answer the question 'What must I do to be at peace with myself so that I may live presently and die peacefully?'

Together we had a raw conversation about how death brought us back to life. Somehow during this episode, there were tears, laughter, and healing. She opened up about being severely depressed, she shared how she defines being authentic and spoke about her work, the beauty, the challenge, and the surrender.

My hope for you as you listen to this episode is simple:

Become a little less resistant towards death and allow it to inspire you to live.

#31 Going With Grace, according to Death Doula, Alua Arthur

Play

Truth be had, we were slightly reluctant to dive so deeply into the topic of death when deciding to do this interview with Death Doula, Alua Arthur, but because on this show we ask our listeners to journey into those uncomfortable places that we all spend a lot of our time and energy avoiding, this episode ending up being the perfect opportunity for us to practice what we preach! And I’m so glad we did because this talk blew the doors wide open on this somewhat scary topic!

Our guest is a guide to navigating the emotional and practical issues while contemplating or nearing the end of life. Through her organization aptly named: Going With Grace, her goals are to bring grace and compassion to the cycle of life by planning for it and effortlessly tying up loose ends. Offering much needed support to those in their 11th hour of life, she helps her clients find peace with themselves so that they may depart with grace and ease.

So much of what we talk about here revolves around being thankful for the darkness’s in life that allow us to see the light, ...we can’t imagine anything that makes that contrast more apparent then our inevitable impending deaths... We hope you’re able to open yourself to this conversation and reap all of the beauty from it that it offers. Thank you for being a diligent seeker and taking on the hard stuff too! #MAJicMob
