Life and Football

In this episode of the Life and Football Podcast our Special Guest was Phillip Kirkland. Phillip Kirkland is a former Wide Receiver for Bethune Cookman University, he’s jersey number while there was number 82. Phillip also a short free agent stint with the New York Jets. Phillip was born and raised in Quincy, Florida. He attend James A. Shanks High School before it closed as a High School onto the new zoned East Gadsden County High School (Currently Gadsden County High School). While at East Gadsden and Bethune Cookman he was a star football and track athlete. This was a great interview! With Phillip it is evident that sports have had a big impact on the culture of HBCU life and enjoyment of learning influence far beyond the playing field. Phillip stated that most people see that athletes are so focused on their sport and performing well athletically that they only worry about maintaining their eligibility. And in some cases many of these students choose easy majors and take easy. Phillip said that he did not want to be the normal stereotypes that exist about the academic success and failure of student-athletes. The idea of the “dumb jock” is often unchallenged, by the general public and academic community. Just know that Phillip Kirkland always loved learning and School work above playing any sports. Phillip gives a detailed look into his life journey. He’s currently working as an IT engineer with Home Depot, he manages staff members, and he’s a recruiter for the company as well. Phillip loves giving back as he is on a board at BCU, mentor’s students at BCU who has interest in engineering and he has plans on starting programs and motivating kids from his hometown of Quincy, Florida.
