Tony Matelli is an artist who was born in Chicago and lives and works in New York City. Tony received his BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art &amp; Design in 1993 and his MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1995. He is represented by the Marlborough Gallery.He’s had solo shows at Marlborough, The State Hermitage Museum in Russia, The Aldrich Museum in Connecticut, The Davis Museum in Massachusetts, the Bergen Kunstmuseum in Denmark, Palais de Tokyo in Paris and many, many more. He’s shown in group shows too numerous to list. He’s received an NYFA Grant and is in the collections of over twenty museums around the world. He has become wellknown for his hyper-realistic sculptures often depicting characters and thingsjust barely getting by; things nearly dead, hopelessly lost or otherwisetotally unwanted. These sculptures serve as metaphors for our own socialmalaise and our general struggle for survival. They mimic inner states ofdesolation, panic, ambivalence and despair; frequent conditions associated withtrying to locate ones self within our social world.  Tony Matelli has exhibited extensively in the USand in Europe. His work was most recently seenin “5 Billion Years,? at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, and Into Me/Out of Me, at P.S. 1 MOMA New York, travelling toKW Berlin Institute of Contemporary Art. Upcoming projects include Evolution:Tony Matelli/Alexis Rockman, ContemporaryArts Center,Cincinnati, Still Life, at the Dunedin PublicArt Gallery,Dunedin, New Zealand, and Die Macht der Dinge - The Power of Things, Georg Kolbe Museum, Berlin.
