Cameron Yarbrough: A Torch Against the Night | Death, Spirituality, and Leadership Coaching

The Quest Pod with Justin Kan

While many of us were drinking our youth away, Cameron confronted one of the most difficult battles in life: death. He devoted himself to a decade of spiritual pursuit from the age of 20, working at a hospice and preparing for his own death ritual. He then became a coach, sharing the lessons he learned with business executives in Silicon Valley. He later founded Torch, a leadership development platform teaching empathy, which has raised close to $40 million to date. I first met Cameron at his clinic. I watched him grow into a startup founder, as I transitioned from building Atrium to beginning my inner journey. In this episode, we sit down to talk about our learnings from both ends of the spectrum: what it’s like to lose a dear friend, being a leader who can empathize with the pains of others, and coming to terms with our own death. 🍎 iTunes: https://apple.co/3lU3fZs🎵 Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3srzJwq✍️ Newsletter: https://thequestpod.substack.com🎧 Transcripts (soon): https://justin.quest🌎 Everything Quest: https://listen.justin.quest

Scaling Leadership Development with Cameron Yarbrough

The Conversation Factory

On today’s episode, I talk with Cameron Yarbrough, the Co-founder of Torch, a leadership development platform integrating coaching, behavioral science, and agile feedback. Cameron is also a licensed therapist and prior to starting the company, applied his knowledge and learnings to executive leadership coaching, working with high profile founders like Reddit Co-Founders Alexis O'Hanian and Steve Huffman, Founder of Twitch, Justin Kan, Partner at Y Combinator Gary Tan, and a bunch of other well known startup founders.  full transcript is at: theconversationfactory.com/podcast/scaling-leadership-development Cameron offers some deep insight on how to step up as a leader and as a coach of leaders. We also dive into the challenges of designing a product for multiple customers and needs - his platform, Torch.io is designed for Learning and Development leaders to set up programs, and also for coaches and coachees to have a streamlined experience...all while working to deliver insight on the ROI of coaching - both top line and bottom line impacts on the business - spoiler alert - it’s a hard thing to do, but worth it. Why? We close the interview with a Carl Jung Quote:   “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” Cameron offers: “To me, this is a perfect reflection on what it means to really look at your blind spots. If you do not look at your blind spots, if you do not do the painful hard work of bringing in, bringing attention to your blind spots, those blind spots are going to run your life and you're going to call it fate.” That is what having a coach can do for a leader, and what a facilitator can do for a team, to be sure. Cameron also shares his insights from his experiences in Zen philosophy and Psychology and puts much of modern facilitation practice in a larger context and history from T-Groups at MIT in the 1960s to Stanford’s Graduate School of Business’ Interpersonal Dynamics course today. Leadership traits in conflict? Get a coach says Cameron Yarbrough

People at Work

There are two key traits that are integral to being a successful leader. They are: 1. Emotional intelligence 2. The ability to make difficult, unpopular decisions In reality, there’s an inherent conflict with those two traits. If you’re high in emotional intelligence and finely attuned to what others are feeling, it can be a struggle to have those difficult conversations.  On the other hand, if you care very little about upsetting people it can be easy to make unpopular decisions but perhaps you’ll struggle with empathizing why this was difficult for others.  It’s pretty rare to naturally excel at both of these traits, which is why coaching is so important. For this reason, Cameron Yarbrough and his company, Torch, are on a mission to make coaching available to a wider audience. If you’re interested in the intersection between behavioral science, technology, and leadership coaching, then this is the episode for you. About our guest: Cameron is CEO and co-founder of Torch and a serial entrepreneur with 20 years of operational experience along with an extensive background in mindfulness, psychotherapy, and executive coaching. He’s passionate about helping people unlock their human performance through leadership coaching.  Connect with Cameron on LinkedIn at linkedin.com/in/cameron-yarbrough-60579948/ or Twitter @yarbroughcam.

Cameron Yarbrough - co founder Torch, serial entrepreneur

Human Impact

Cameron Yarbrough is the Co-founder and CEO of Torch Leadership Labs. He brings 20 years of operational experience to his role as CEO, along with an extensive background in mindfulness and psychotherapy.  After a 2005 exit with a “click and mortar” retail company, Cameron spent time learning the principles of mindfulness meditation. Insight from those retreats were foundational to his development, and lead him to study the roots of Freudian and Humanistic psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies.  Later, he founded the Well Clinic, a premier mental health company in San Francisco with more than 40 psychologists and therapists. The company is still thriving today with Cameron as chairman of the board. In parallel, Cameron built a successful executive coaching practice that leveraged his business and psychological background.  Cameron worked with CEO’s from some of Silicon Valley’s most successful companies during this period. Cameron was a part time employee at the Stanford Graduate School of Business serving as an interpersonal dynamics facilitator, running communication labs for business students. Cameron is a Y Combinator graduate and has to date raised over $13m for Torch. Torch Leadership Labs was the natural next step in Cameron’s leadership journey, as it builds a software, analytics and coaching stack that helps senior leaders be most effective.  Torch's mission is to change the culture of leadership in the world.

Cameron Yarbrough of Torch

The Effective Founder

Today, I’m talking with , the Co-Founder and CEO of , a leadership development company built on principles of psychology and management best practices. Leaders aren’t born, they’re bred.  Sure, some people may naturally be more inclined to exhibit leadership skills, but nobody becomes a great leader without real work. A certain amount of that needs to come from hands-on experience, but anybody learning exclusively through their own experience is make the journey harder than it needs to be. This is where coaching can be invaluable--it’s never an easy journey, but with the right coach you’ll be able to make faster progress and go further than you could on your own. Unfortunately, finding the right coach is anything but easy. Cameron and his team at Torch hope to change that by not only using technology to find you a coach, but also to bring accountability to the process and make sure you’re heading in the right direction. In our chat, we dive into what it takes to get the most out of coaching and we go behind the scenes to talk about the challenges of rapidly scaling the company to more than $12 million in funding and dozens of employees over the last 2 years.
