Jameson Lopp: Bitcoin Covenants, OP_VAULT, Upgrade vs. Ossification & Casa Changes

Bitcoin Rapid-Fire

Jameson Lopp is a technologist who has been involved in the bitcoin space for over 10 years. He has worked at bitcoin companies, created and contributed to several educational resources, and co-founded Casa, a service which helps customers self-custody their bitcoin.Jameson recently hit me up, asking if I'd be interested in a discussion about 'bitcoin covenants'. While I tend to focus more on the 'personal', 'cultural', or 'philosophical' aspects and implications of bitcoin, I am still quite interested in what's happening in the technical department, and even more so about how different people think about the appropriate approach or process to making upgrades to bitcoin. It seemed to be like Jameson would be a great person to have this discussion with, and I was interested in hearing more about his background generally, so we set it up.Enjoy!---More from Lopp:TWITTER: https://twitter.com/loppWEBSITE: https://www.lopp.netMore from me:TWITTER: http://bit.ly/2P7PUjAYOUTUBE: https://bit.ly/3aBbZxgMEDIUM: http://bit.ly/2Zk0DexSUBSTACK: Money MessiahVIDA: https://vida.page/johnkvallisTo buy Bitcoin in the US with zero-fees, purchase hosted mining rigs, and access their Lightning Services platform for developers, visit River.comOnce you buy bitcoin, taking custody of it is extremely important, if you want to maximize the benefit of this unique asset. Bitcoin Security + the Future of AI with Jameson Lopp

What Bitcoin Did with Peter McCormack

“Every species that becomes sentient and develops technology that is sufficient to start creating signals that propagate through the universe, eventually also hits this inflexion point, which we may be close to, wherein the power of the technology becomes uncontrollable, and they destroy themselves for one of a million different reasons.”— Jameson LoppJameson Lopp is the co-founder & CTO of Casa. In this interview, we discuss why Casa has extended custody support to Ethereum, important security lessons from the Luke Dashir hack, Bitcoin security & inheritance planning, and how AI came of age in 2022 with the release of ChatGPT. - - - - Last year provided the most brutal examples of why “not your keys, not your coin” should be the first thing anyone new to the ecosystem learns. Dave Portney’s infamous tweet questioning where his Bitcoin was after FTX blew up, showed how generally unaware people are of the risks associated with exchanges, and the importance of custody in relation to ownership. However, there are also those who quite reasonably need greater protection than that offered by a hardware wallet. There are many examples of people losing access to their Bitcoin held off-exchange. Further, the hacking of Luke Dashir’s security setup shows the risks of bespoke security solutions. This is where Casa comes in - providing multisig custody solutions for Bitcoin holders.Casa has now extended its service provision to Ethereum. For Bitcoin maximalists this may be viewed as a red line having been crossed. For those who hold Bitcoin and Ethereum, this may provide a practical one-stop shop solution that convinces them to take their holdings (including Bitcoin) off exchanges. There are merits to both sides of the pragmatism versus maximalism argument, which is sure to continue to be debated throughout 2023.And yet, history may relegate the significance of the collapses in crypto in 2022 behind last year's massive advances in AI technology. ChatGPT, in particular, has the potential to revolutionise the employment market: online customer services, copywriting, journalism, consulting, academia, computer programming… the disruption to white-collar workers could be unprecedented.Despite being less than 2 months old, ChatGPT has led to a pervading wave of excitement and hysteria. It is a wake-up call of how technology can rapidly interrupt the assumed order within society. The issue is that it will be followed not only by advances in its own capabilities, but other technologies will follow in biotechnology, VR, nanotechnology etc. etc. etc. Are we on the edge of the greatest revolution to impact humans? - - - - This episode’s sponsors:Gemini - Buy Bitcoin instantlyLedn - Financial services for Bitcoin hodlersBitcasino - The Future of Gaming is hereFidelity - Careers in cryptoLedger - State of the art Bitcoin hardware walletWasabi Wallet - Privacy by default-----WBD609 - Show Notes-----If you enjoy The What Bitcoin Did Podcast you can help support the show by doing the following:Become a Patron and get access to shows early or help contributeMake a tip:Bitcoin: 3FiC6w7eb3dkcaNHMAnj39ANTAkv8Ufi2SQR Codes: BitcoinIf you do send a tip then please email me so that I can say thank youSubscribe on iTunes | Spotify | Stitcher | SoundCloud | YouTube | Deezer | TuneIn | RSS FeedLeave a review on iTunesShare the show and episodes with your friends and familySubscribe to the newsletter on my websiteFollow me on Twitter Personal | Twitter Podcast | Instagram | Medium | YouTubeIf you are interested in sponsoring the show, you can read more about that here or please feel free to drop me an email to discuss options.

31 You need to secure your bitcoin w/ Jameson Lopp

Bitcoin Bottom Line

Jameson Lopp, one of the foremost experts in bitcoin security, joins Steven McClurg and C.J. Wilson on this week’s Bitcoin Bottom Line episode from an undisclosed location. Lopp is the co-founder and CTO of bitcoin security provider Casa. They kick off the episode discussing Lopp’s anonymity, how he has been avoiding public appearances, and the importance of privacy for the role he plays in his field. The group talks about Casa, and how their security is so high that even if a wrench attack did happen, there’s no way that could lead to any loss of funds or compromise for their clients. On the Casa website, they offer a “well security protocol”, consisting of up to 40 pages of in-depth explanations covering how they architected their product using multi-sig protocols, multiple manufacturers, hardware devices for keys, and figuring out how to distribute them geographically. “We don’t want this to be a security through obscurity. An attacker should be able to completely understand our architecture and still not be able to do anything about it,” Lopp explains. McClurg brings up diversification and how it is one of the basic security strategies. He explains how Valkyrie receives questions about why we are using external services and hardware wallets, and his answer is always “diversification”. Lopp explains that in his opinion, “The only reason someone would use a custodian is if they are in a regulatory position where they are legally required to use a qualified custodian.” He goes on to explain how diversification can be a threat, and closes out offering his best pieces of security advice.
