Garrett Marrero joins us on this episode of Hawaii's Best. Garrett is the co-founder of Maui Brewing Company in Maui, Hawaii. We get to hear how Maui Brewing Company started back in 2005 when Garrett was only twenty-six years old. Garrett shares how his passion for micro-brewing started. Growing up in a European family and coming along his Grandpa’s side helped Garrett develop a palette for a great beer at a young age. We get to hear why Maui Brewery is leading by example with how their facility is built and operating, producing 100 percent of their energy on-site. Garrett shares with Bryan how this 82,000 square foot facility provides 1.2 mega wats of solar power to their primary location being fully grid-independent. After working with the State of Hawaii and receiving his small craft producers license, Maui Brewery not only produces beer but produces local soda, whiskey, gin, and now hard spritzers. If someone comes to Maui for the first time Garrett shares what to do and what not to do. From skipping touristy stuff to just grabbing a six-pack of their Blonde lager, poki, and relaxing by the blue waters of Hawaii in Maui. In this episode, we hear how Garret loves to unwind in a very cool high flying way. Listen in and hear about how his start on Maui started rocky and how it has developed since then. 020: Inspiring Growth Story of Maui Brewing Company | Garrett Marrero
Garrett Marrero and Melanie Oxley poured determination and long hours into building Maui Brewing Company and were named 2017's Small Business Association's Small Business Persons of the Year. Guest Biography Garrett Marrero is Co-founder & CEO of Maui Brewing Co. Garrett makes sure to drink the local beer everywhere he travels. For him, great beer reveals elements of the personality of a place and, hopefully, reflects a vibrant part of the local economy. It’s also the reason why, on his first visit to Maui in 2003, Marrero refused to accept the fact that Maui’s “local” beer was actually made on the U.S. mainland and shipped to the island. An investment consultant with bachelor’s degrees in economics and international relations, and an associate’s degree in finance, he recognized an opportunity to create a niche product in an untapped market. A beach kid from San Diego, he also saw in Maui a chance to live near some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Garrett and his wife Melanie opened Maui Brewing Co. in January 2005 with a seven-barrel brewpub and 30 employees in the West Maui community of Kahana. Over a decade later, Maui Brewing is Hawai‘i’s largest craft brewer and one of its fastest-growing companies, employing more than 400 people, producing 53,000 barrels a year, and retailing its beers in 23 states and 10 countries.
